the prime of their lives, they're

the college experience, and it all
changes.

That sense of security that they had.
We're all a bit shocked. I'm totally

freaking out right now. Was shattered.

The whole house is a crime scene.

Last night, Federal Bureau of
Investigation, the arrested 28 -year

Christopher Kohlberger.

This is one of the most talked -about
true crime cases in modern American

history. He may have been a little odd
or a little off, but, like, other than

that, you'd never expect someone to do
something like this.

You hadn't attacked them in their sleep,
in the middle of the night, like a

pedophile. Evil walked into that house.

stole their lives, Kaylee would have
kicked your fucking ass.

This call out of Moscow, Idaho, on what
should have been just regular, calm fall

morning, would mark the beginning of an
incredibly dark chapter that would

captivate the entire nation.

November 13th, 2022, roommates DM and
BF, they wake up after spending the

in BF's room on the first floor of the
house on King Road.

Are you with the patient? Okay, I need
someone to keep the phone. Stop passing

it around.

What is going on currently? Is someone
passed out right now?

I don't really know, but pretty much at
4 a .m.

Okay, I need to know what's going on
right now if someone is passed out. Can

find that out?

Come on, let me go check.

She's not waking up.

Get out, get out, get out.

Sorry, they just gave me the phone.

Is she breathing? No.

They had been texting their other
roommates. They had texted Maddie,

Ethan, Kaylee, trying to get a hold of
them. And when they couldn't, they were

really, really freaked out.

Tell me exactly what's going on.

One of our, one of the roommates has
passed out and she was drunk last night

she's not waking up.

Oh, and they saw some man in their house
last night.

They reached out to a friend of theirs
who lived across the street and DM said,

Something really strange happened in the
house last night.

Can you and Hunter, her boyfriend, come
over and check the house?

Hunter walked upstairs, and he told
everybody to get out of the house.

The police walked into really what can
only be described as a nightmare

scenario. They walked into a crime scene
with four grisly, murdered bodies, a

scene that none of them were expecting,
and more importantly, none of them were

prepared for.

The idea that we had a quadruple
homicide, my brain just didn't

initially. I don't think anybody can
prepare for that.

For the first time ever, we are seeing
images from inside the house, and it is

exposing details of this story that we
never knew before.

There didn't appear to be any forced
entry. When they entered the house, they

went up to the second floor, and that's
where they found Zanna Kernodle lying

there in her underwear and a sweatshirt.
In a nearby bed was Zanna's boyfriend,

Ethan Chapin.

Zanna Kernodle had over 50 stab wounds
on her body.

When the officers went to the third
floor, they went into the second bedroom

where they found Madison Mogan laying
next to Kaylee Gonsalves.

Kaylee's face was almost unrecognizable
because of all the stab wounds.

There is this disturbing new video that
captures the moment in the early morning

hours. Around 3 .51 a .m., someone is
seen walking down the street. A white

sedan loops past the home repeatedly.
And finally, you have these haunting

sounds that break the silence.

As word of this tragedy is spreading
everywhere and everybody's talking about

it, naturally, there are questions that
begin swirling.

We know you have questions, and so do
we.

The Moscow Police Department, they're
not answering a lot of questions from

press. They don't have a press
conference about this case until

You know, that's three days after the
murders.

So a lot of people are asking questions
and wondering, are we safe? What's going

on?

We have learned that Ethan and Zanna
were at a party on campus and Madison

Kaylee were at a downtown bar.

They arrived home sometime after 1 .45.

We know that these homicides occurred in
the early morning hours of Sunday,

November 13th.

The four were stabbed with a knife, but
no weapon has been located at this time.

They weren't alerting the public to what
they'd learned yet because they didn't

want to compromise the investigation.

Based on details of the scene, we
believe this was an isolated, targeted

on our victims.

We do not have a suspect at this time,
and that individual is still out there.

We cannot say that there is no threat to
the community.

Please stay vigilant and be aware of
your surroundings at all times.

Try to imagine where this took place in
a tiny town in Idaho.

This is something that is so horrific,
not only is the community immediately

tensed up, up in arms, wants answers,
wants a result, but this is such a

specifically horrific incident that now
you have the eyes of the nation also

looking into this small town. What are
they going to do? How are you going to

solve this? And how are you going to
protect the community that is so scared

the moment?

The police are doing everything they can
to find out who this is, why this

happened, and most importantly, is this
person going to strike again?

For a lot of people following this case,
social media became the fastest, most

direct way to get information.

According to victim's family, University
of Idaho killer was sloppy, left

mess of evidence.

Guys, have you heard of this quadruple
murder out of University of Idaho? These

four young people were stabbed to death
in the middle of the night while they

were sleeping.

It's Moscow, Idaho. It's such a safe
area.

Not a lot of people care about security.
A lot of the times I, especially before

this incident, I would leave my door
unlocked.

I think our community was really
shocked. I mean, this area is known for

extremely safe because something like
this is honestly unheard of.

People were scared because they didn't
know if the person they ran into on the

street was the killer.

The university basically said to
students, if you need to go home, you

finish the semester online.

It's very unfortunate, of course, what
happened. I mean, we're all a bit

shocked. We all felt a little bit
uneasy.

Before, people were very rowdy, sort of
outgoing.

Then they just started to keep to
themselves a little bit more.

The autopsies were done quickly in this
case because of the sense of urgency.

The police knew that the more
information they had and the quicker

information, the better they could
implement it. All the wounds on the body

confirmed what the evidence already
showed, that these murders were done

quickly, within 16 minutes of each
other. That means the intruder acted

ruthless efficiency and did so with a
fixed blade knife, which is really more

a hunting knife. And that told police
that this was a target attack, not a

random act of violence.

The Moscow Police Department, they've
got a whodunit on their hands and they

know it. In any homicide investigation,
you have to move really quickly.

And so the chief of police brings in the
Idaho State Police for assistance. He

brings in the FBI and they set up a tip
line and hundreds, if not thousands and

thousands of tips start to pour in.

You have these names that are etched
into the small town community.

Kaylee, Madison, Zanna, and Ethan.

There was this broken community that was
pausing to remember.

They were coming together to heal
together.

Anyone who knew Kaylee would tell you
the same thing.

To know her was to love her.

And I promised.

I promised to live just like you did.

Kaylee Gonsalves was 21.

She was set to graduate.

She was getting ready to move to Texas
for a job after graduation.

Kaylee had a really big personality.

People loved her.

And she was actually graduating early.

And sadly, she had pretty much moved out
of the King Road house.

She and Maddie were best friends from
the time they were younger kids.

Maddie was 21 and just absolutely
stunning and beautiful.

The outpouring online was enormous.

You had friends, strangers posting
tributes to all these kids. People who

never even met them were making videos
honoring their lives.

There are four very, very important
names in this case.

And that reaction just really showed how
deeply this tragedy resonated

everywhere.

Going through the rest of my life
without you is going to be a tough one.

But I'm not only living for myself now,
but for the rest of the life that Maddie

wasn't able to live.

She had such an infectious smile and a
charismatic personality.

And if you knew anything about Xana as
well, they were very similar in how they

acted together.

I love you so much, E, and Xan.

Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle were in a
relationship.

He was in a fraternity, and in fact,
they both enjoyed Greek life on campus.

Ethan was the oldest of his siblings. He
was a triplet. He was somebody who was

always cracking jokes to his friends.

Xana was described as more of a free
spirit.

Xana was such an amazing, ambitious
young girl.

She was someone.

She was someone my family thought of
their own.

She was my other half.

My heart aches knowing I can't see her
again in this lifetime.

We'll find justice for you, Ethan,
Maddie, and Kaylee. We love you all so

They just tried to trace back their
movements throughout the day.

On November 12th, you had the photograph
on the porch of all of them together.

It was game day. It was the big
homecoming game. And the University of

the Vandals, were playing UC Davis.

Ethan and Zanna were at the Sigma Chi
house for the party. They knew that

and Maddie had been at the Corner Club
before they came home.

Hello. Hi. Welcome back.

Everybody had been drinking. All of the
roommates were home in the house on King

Road by 2 a .m.

Everybody's a suspect until they're not.
But they don't have somebody who

they're looking at who's, you know,
suspect number one. So they're trying to

rule people out.

Is it someone that maybe someone in the
house had dated in the past?

Is it someone that they'd gotten into a
fight with at a party, perhaps?

Is it someone that there had been some
sort of brewing personal beef growing

between them? Or is it something
completely random?

Detectives are looking at this from all
different angles, and they're obviously

looking and speaking to the people that
knew these four friends best.

But it was the account of one surviving
roommate that was different. It was that

account that provided... Just incredibly
chilling details.

All I heard was, I heard her go
upstairs. I'm like, okay, I'm going to

sleep now because she's going upstairs.

And you heard who go upstairs?

Kaylee and the dog Murphy.

And upstairs to the very top?

Yeah, that's where her room is.

Okay.

And then ultimately her walking up, I
heard her scream and she ran upstairs

she saw someone.

That's what I'm pretty sure she's got.

Someone's here and she screamed and just
ran downstairs.

And I called her name, but I jumped up
and locked my door because I was so

scared.

And I heard from in the bathroom, and I
heard her crying, and I heard some guys

say that you're going to be okay, I'm
going to help you.

And I kept calling her name, but she
wasn't answering.

And then I opened the door for a second,
and I saw this guy, and he was not

insanely tall, but he was wearing all
black and, like, this mask, which was

covering his forehead and his mouth.

And then I locked the door, and I
called.

The cops kept it really close to the
vest that DM had seen a man walking

the house around 4 a .m. And then she
opened her door and saw what she thought

was a firefighter a man in all black
with bushy eyebrows and a mask

keep in mind this was four in the
morning and she was asleep she didn't

when she started hearing these noises if
she was dreaming or if she was awake

now looking back think about the terror
that she must feel knowing that she was

that close to the intruder that killed
her three roommates and a friend i can't

imagine having to live with that for the
rest of your life

The whole house is a crime scene, but
Zanna's room and Maddie's room are

two primary places where these homicides
were committed. As soon as they get

into Maddie's room...

They see a K -Bar knife sheath.

Corporal Payne, when he did his first
initial walkthrough of the residence,

the sheath and recognized it immediately
as something that we needed to take a

look at and start processing.

They don't have possession of the knife.
I've actually got the same type of

knife, and I'll show you the knife
itself.

It's K -Bar.

It is a combat knife that's been used by
our troops since World War II, famously

by the United States Marine Corps.

You can imagine someone over these
victims, and then dramatically they drop

sheath down. They're still holding the
knife, and then they go into attack.

And it's such a frenzied event. They
bolt out of the room.

They leave the sheath behind.

It was discovered in the bed next to
Maddie, and no one could remember Maddie

Kaylee or anyone else in the house
having this type of hunting knife.

There is this brand new theory that is
emerging from law enforcement, and it's

that the killer may have actually
followed Zanna downstairs when she

the attack on Madison, and that, that
may have been the moment when the knife

sheath was left behind.

When the Idaho State Police came in,
they processed the scene, that sheath.

was immediately turned over, literally
driven straight down to the Idaho State

Police Forensics Lab in Meridian and
handed directly to the specialists down

there to begin work on it immediately.

But there's a complication with the
evidence that's found at this particular

house. Who lives here?

We're not actually... You don't know who
lives here? No, I don't. We're just

here for a noise complaint.

Oh, okay.

The police in Moscow, they're familiar
with 1122 King Road.

It's a party house.

And there had been noise complaints, and
so police had been to the house.

You have a wide, diverse pool of people
that can be coming and going through

there. And, of course, they're
depositing everything that they bring

outside with them.

You know, you begin to think about hair,
fiber, footprints, anything like that

that can be deposited in that
environment and may have been deposited

weeks prior to this actual slaughter.

Hi, this is the Moscow Police
Department.

Who am I speaking with?

Maddie, we received a noise complaint.

You have a house full of random people.

You need to let them know that the noise
needs to come down, okay?

Okay, very clear. Thank you.

There was a lot of speculation online
that possibly these homicides were tied

these noise complaints.

Did the person who called in the noise
complaint do it to look at how fast the

police would respond?

But there were really never any credible
leads or theories.

Hello, miss.

What's your name? Zanna.

Zanna, do you live here?

Yeah. This is the second noise complaint
we've had here tonight within two

hours. I sincerely apologize, Bob. Okay.

I'm just going to bed.

As the days and weeks passed, it really
felt like, at least publicly, that they

didn't really have much, that the police
were just kind of waiting for something

to happen.

And then finally, a new breakthrough.

We have literally an army of analysts
who have been sorting through videos

have been submitted.

There's been a lot of questions about
the white car that we've been interested

in. We're looking for that car because
we believe that that car was in the area

during the time of the murders, and we
also believe that the occupant or

occupants may have seen something.

Forensics teams were at the house all
day today, and they were seen taking

pictures.

of what look like tire marks outside of
the house so far we have a a list of

approximately 22 000 registered white
hyundai elantris that fit into our

criteria that we're sorting through
that's an awful lot of information there

isn't a crystal clear image of the car
on all of the different pieces of

surveillance video but they're able to
determine that this is a white Hyundai

Elantra. And so that generated a whole
new round of tips. People calling in

information from around the country
about white Hyundai Elantras.

So attention now turns back to the
nightsheet and they test the button snap

DNA. They're hoping that's going to
provide them the answers that they're

looking for.

They got a full DNA profile from the
snap.

And because of that, they were able to
run it through the system to see if it

matched with anyone had been convicted
of any sort of crime, any felony, or had

been through any other national
database.

And it came up empty.

Detectives are following all these clues
across state lines, and that is when

they narrow down.

They go to Othram Labs and they say,
hey, can you build out a family tree?

you do your genetic genealogy work to
figure out who this person could be?

Othram Labs could only take it so far,
so they then turned it over to the FBI.

The turning point came on December 19th
when the FBI came back to the Moscow

Police Department and they said, hey,
that DNA you gave us from the knife

sheath, we found a name. You need to
look at this guy. His name is Brian

Koberger.

They get with the trash company and pull
Brian Koberger's parents' trash.

They fly the trash.

back to Idaho, and they pull out a Q
-tip. They test that DNA against

the DNA from the knife sheath, and they
find out that it's nearly 100 % certain

that the person whose DNA is on the
knife sheath is the son of Michael

Brian's father.

To get that name was just fantastic.

We were digging our teeth into
everything, but we really dug into that

immediately, and that's when all of the
puzzle pieces started coming together.

Now, the public didn't know this was
going on, but at that time, this whole

story was entering a new phase. There
was going to be this tense countdown to

arrest. The problem is, there was no
apparent connection between Brian

and these students, so the natural
question is, could he really be their

I'm totally freaking out right now. It's
not always the creepy guy with glasses

and oily hair and creeping around the
corner. It's sometimes just that average

Joe, much like Brian Koberger.

Brian Koberger.

Brian Koberger. Brian Koberger. Brian
Christopher Koberger.

Brian Koberger was a PhD student in
criminology. He had moved to Pullman,

Washington in late June of 2022.

Pullman, Washington is less than 10
miles away from Moscow, Idaho.

It's about a 15 -minute drive away, and
he was pursuing his dream.

He wanted to study the criminal mind.
This was somebody who overcame a lot in

his past. When he was a teenager,

He was addicted to heroin.

He was obese at one point.

He was a tortured kind of soul. He was
bullied in school.

And his father actually did so much to
try to help him. He was able to get

clean. He then started going to
community college and studying

criminal justice.

He later on got a master's degree in
criminology.

He was somebody who was also a loner. He
didn't have a lot of friends.

And he had a hard time connecting and
relating to women.

I can't believe that WSU did not fire
him.

before December with all of the
complaints about this guy.

Koeberger would sometimes go into an
office where several female grad

worked and physically block the door.

A PhD student told police that he
enjoyed conflict and was disparaging

women and that he liked to talk about
sexual burglary, which was his field of

study. Referring to the murders,
Koberger had stated whoever had

homicides must have been pretty good.

You know, for many people following this
case, the shot wasn't just who he was.

It was his age. He was close in age to
the victims. He was a student and his

life looked eerily familiar.

At that time, I would have never said,
oh, yeah, that guy would would do

something like this.

He may have been a little odd or a
little off.

But like other than that.

You'd never expect someone to be
allegedly part of a quadruple homicide

These chameleons, as I like to call
them, you don't know who's capable of

until it happens.

When the police were first looking at
Brian Koberger and really investigating

the connection between him and the
murders and owning a Hyundai Elantra,

have to rule out all non -malicious
reasons first. Is this someone who

could have been involved in the crime?

Or is it just a coincidence that he
happens to own this car and was at a

nearby that night?

Moscow police get a search warrant and
they get Brian Koberger's cell phone

records. And they find that for most of
the evening, that Saturday night before

the homicides, that he's hanging out at
his apartment in Pullman.

And then before 3 a .m., he's on the
move.

At 2 .54, his phone goes dark.

It's not until 4 .48 a .m.

That that phone reconnects to a network,
and it's south of Moscow.

Investigators say that that two -hour
time period where Brian Koberger's phone

is not reporting to the cell network and
his phone is basically dark, they say

it's critical because it coincides with
the time that the murders occurred.

The police knew that he was out that
night, and they knew he was in the

vicinity. So they started looking at
what towers he had pinged leading up to

this night. And that's when they
discovered that at least 12 times he had

in the vicinity of that house.

All of these weeks of quiet
investigation have now led to one name.

December 2022, they are finally ready to
move in.

Writing news this morning, News Nation
can confirm.

An arrest has reportedly been made in
the quadruple stabbing death of four

college students in Moscow, Idaho.

Last night, in conjunction with the
Pennsylvania State Police, Federal

Investigation, detectives arrested 28
-year -old Brian Christopher Koberger

in Albrightville, Pennsylvania.

50 officers surrounded Brian Koberger's
parents' house. When they got there,

they found him already going through
track, sorting it out, trying to remove

whatever he contributed there.

After they arrested him without
incident, they took him to a local

learned that after Brian Koberger's
arrest, he was interviewed by law

enforcement, and they spent a lot of
time going through his background, and

appeared forthright. But as soon as they
brought up this incident, he shut the

interview down.

At several different moments in the
conversation, the suspect would stop and

something about, well, let's really talk
about why we're here.

It was the third time that he brought
that up. He was more stern and wanted to

know why they were there, and of course
they explained, and that's when he

invoked his right to counsel and ended
the interview.

So Brian Kohlberger is then extradited
back to Idaho to face charges.

A criminal complaint was filed yesterday
here in Latah County.

Charging the defendant, Mr. Kohlberger,
with four counts of first -degree murder

in addition to felony burglary.

I'm totally freaking out right now. Man
arrested in Monroe County, PA in

connection to the Idaho murders.

An arrest has been made in the murders
of those four University of Idaho

students. His mugshot and name has
officially been released. This is Brian

Kohlberger. I went to college with Brian
Kohlberger.

I've been looking at his picture all
day.

I've been saying the name all day in my
head, and I was like, I know this guy. I

couldn't put a point on it.

And he lost so much weight. When I knew
him, he was a pudgy guy. He was really

friendly. He was a pretty smart guy, and
he was interested in criminal justice,

and I remember having classes with him.
For this guy to do that is beyond me.

And now we have all this fresh new
insight that's revealing the moments

lead up to this arrest.

Once they realized that Koberger had
gone to Pennsylvania, they started

following him so they could really get a
sense of who he was and what was the

purpose of his actions.

So for the next four days, they trailed
him. And during that time period, they

watched him meticulously clean his
Hyundai Elantra.

He was seen wearing gloves, doing things
like going out to the grocery store

with gloves on. He was seen walking
around the neighborhood at very, very

morning hours, the pitch black.

Some different behaviors for sure.

During a formal search of Koberger's
vehicle and his parents' home,

investigators collect several knives, a
handgun with empty magazines, more

gloves, black face coverings, laptops.

It's just this laundry list of
potentially significant items.

The hope is that they're going to be
able to find evidence that connects

Koberger to the murders.

But one of the things that they don't
find is the murder weapon itself, the

hunting knife.

They also don't find any blood.

They don't find any forensic evidence at
this point that links Brian Koberger to

the murders.

It wasn't until the probable cause
affidavit came out that we found out

profile taken from the snap of the
sheath matched Brian Koberger.

We learned about the investigation and
the cell site information they gathered,

as well as video surveillance.

And it showed that not only was the
white Elantra in the vicinity of the

the night of the murders, but it was in
the vicinity of the house prior to the

night of the murders as well.

And that white Elantra, or something
very similar, returned to the area after

the murders.

Previously confidential information
about Brian Koberger's cell phone tells

so much more, so much more than just his
movements on the night of the murders.

It's really long, so I'm going to give
you the important details.

Brian's cell phone pinged around the
house 12 times prior to the murders, as

well as five hours after the murders
around 9 .30 a .m.

The case is so incredibly sad. Like,
look how young they are. Brian has not

spoken about motive or anything. He's
actually maintaining his innocence.

They had found on his devices that he
was routinely wiping them and utilizing

systems to do that. And so the amount of
information on him was not a lot. I do

know that they did locate a few news
stories on the case, but all in all,

of his devices were relatively clean,
for lack of a better term.

He had huge gaps in usage from October
12th through November 16th on his

computer. The computer would show that
browser was in use, but then there's no

history, that the system was in use, but
then there's no activity.

So we know that he was cleaning up his
track.

But where he really made mistakes, he
forgot to clear his downloads on his

phone, which was very helpful to us.

I saw American Psycho and how much the
guy loved himself and would take selfies

in the mirror and how clean he would
want to be.

He seemed to do those same types of
things.

Lots of, like, flexing muscles, selfies,
half -closed. There's numerous

instances of that on his phone.

There's tons of history of him looking
into, like, the Idaho murders on Reddit.

This wasn't just someone who was like,
hey, I'm interested in the case.

He was going and downloading the Moscow
press releases to his wife, saving

everything that they populated.

There was a lot of mixed emotions with
that one, you know, because to me, he

a nice guy.

I didn't feel, like, scared. I don't
know. I just was in disbelief.

Couldn't really sleep. You just kind of
replay your whole relationship and,

like, combing through all our
conversations and see if I can, like,

if I could have seen anything. There was
nothing really that...

To pick at it, like, there's nothing
alarming.

Police department search warrant! Come
to the door!

In a search of Brian Koberger's Pullman,
Washington apartment, investigators

find all this new evidence.

Clippings from his bed that contained
stains, a vacuum dust container, and all

of these receipts from recent purchases.

On his computer, I expected, we're going
to go in there, we're going to find the

motive. We're going to be able to tell
these families why.

We're going to understand how this crime
occurred.

And there was so much information that
just wasn't there that was shocking. It

was almost a desperate chase to find
data that was erased.

There was also a really interesting sort
of pattern of things where he read

something on the news that said police
are looking for Hyundai Elantra, white

color. Within minutes, he searches for a
car detailing place and then starts to

shop for used cars.

It's almost too good to be true. Unless
this guy was miraculously set up, which

is like a one in a billion chance, no
one cares enough about Brian Koberger to

set him up. None of this evidence is
pointing to anybody else.

And then you have the body cam videos.

involving Brian Koberger that all come

after his arrest.

Brian Koberger's father, Michael, flew
out to Pullman, Washington in December

help him drive back to Pennsylvania for
the Christmas break. And they're pulled

over in Indiana on the way home.

You right up on the back end of that
van, hold you over for tailgating.

Now the officer lets them go with a
warning, but it's just minutes later,

co -burter men are stopped again.

We don't have any SUVs.

There was a county guy with a black SUV.

Okay, all right.

A lot of people were saying early on
that he was being surveilled from the

he left WSU, and that's just not true.
We did not have him pinpointed as our

primary suspect.

Now, here's the thing.

While investigators are pointing the
finger at Brian Koberger, the Internet

abuzz with debate.

Was he, in fact, the killer? Was he, in
fact, guilty?

Or did they have the wrong guy?

If you think Koberger's not guilty...

You have to believe the person who was
the real unaliver somehow went to

Kohlberger's house that night, shook
hands with Kohlberger, and then touched

weapon and the sheath, take it to the
crime scene.

In May of 2023, Brian Kohlberger goes
before a judge to hear his charges.

For the families of Kaylee and Madison
and Zanna and Ethan, this search for

justice was really just the beginning
because prosecutors announced they were

seeking the death penalty.

For counts two, three, four, and five,
murder in a first degree,

maximum penalties, life in prison, or
the death penalty.

Is Mr. Coburn prepared to plead to be
charged?

No, sir.

I'm going to answer not guilty, please,
on each charge.

When you go to trial, there can be many
possibilities.

You can be fully acquitted. You can be
found guilty.

And in Idaho, if you're found guilty of
murder, they would have brought back the

firing squad for you. And so he was
facing the very real possibility of not

facing life in prison, but death.

So much credit to Prosecutor Bill
Thompson and his office.

They absolutely amazed me. From day one,
they were on the ground. They were

in the scene with investigators,
learning everything from day one so that

could build the best case possible.

Right after Brian Koberger is arrested,
his lawyer, Ann Taylor, she asks for a

gag order in the case. And the
prosecution, they agree to it.

So that basically shuts down any
information coming out about this case.

Brian Koberger also waived his right to
a speedy trial.

Yes.

Brian Koberger's defense, they say, even
with this gag order that we think is

working, we just don't think Brian
Koberger can get a fair trial in Latah

County.

We're here on a motion to change venue
from Latah County to Ada County, filed

by the defense.

The standard here is whether there's a
reasonable likelihood that pretrial

publicity has affected the impartiality
of prospective jurors.

They get the case moved to Ada County,
and a new judge actually takes over the

case as well.

The problem is that there's a gag order.
It's blocking the release of any new

information. Law enforcement is staying
silent. So what do people do? They flock

to social media and they're getting
their updates on TikTok and Reddit.

This case was absolutely everywhere when
it happened. It still is. I think it

got so big because it was so brutal, so
morbid and just pure evil.

The gag order includes anyone in
relation to this case, so police,

investigators, attorneys from either
side, witnesses from either side.

While the state is strengthening their
case against Brian Koberger, his defense

is kind of scrambling. They're fighting
back against IgG, investigative genetic

genealogy, that was used to identify
him.

Your Honor, we're here because the state
has alleged that a single piece of

evidence ties Mr. Koberger to this case.

that there's a knife sheet that has DNA
that they allege matches Brian Koberger.

The defense argued that the FBI's access
to the IgG violated Koberger's Fourth

Amendment rights. And in doing so, they
skirted the law in order to get a viable

DNA profile.

There was no warrant for several phases
of the search that led to the IgG work,

investigative genetic genealogy.

And we think every single one of those
stages, a warrant was required.

Ultimately, the judge determined that
the FBI did not violate Koberger's

Amendment rights. And this allowed the
prosecution to use this critical DNA

evidence as they move forward.

Brian Koberger claimed that he was
innocent.

And his attorneys filed a notice of
alibi. And they claimed that he was out

driving that night. They said it was
something that he often did.

And he was out at a park looking at the
stars.

And when they said that, a lot of people
laughed.

Because basically he's admitting that
he's out and about driving.

Brian Koberger finally gave his alibi.
He finally said what he was doing on the

night of the quadruple murders and how
he was not there and he is not the one

responsible. And take a guess what he
was doing.

Driving in the night by himself looking
at the moon and the stars.

No.

You cannot use a phone that is powered
off to take photos of the stars.

And you might say, that's so dumb. Yeah,
I know. But that's what he said he was

doing. There were zero pictures in this
night of S .T .A .R .S. Like, not

before, not after. Like, it wasn't
photographing.

This is very frustrating. The trial is
continuing to stall month after month

after month, and the families are doing
whatever they can to keep this story

alive in the public eye.

What my daughter's gone through, Maddie
Mae went through, the least I can do

is...

You know, make myself sit down and
communicate and keep people focused on

case. I don't take it lightly.

Her job is to get everyone to forget.

Her job is to stretch this out so long
that the witnesses don't even remember

what happened.

So I'm not going to take it. I'm going
to come forward and I'm going to keep it

fresh.

Part of the prosecution's job leading up
to trial is preparing witnesses and

family members for what's to come.

And the impact on both the community and
the family members here was so severe

that they need to be prepared that
they're going to have to now relive it

detail. We learned that they went for
Maddie first, and then Kaylee.

Kaylee woke up.

Kaylee showed signs of fighting.

But this monster struck her multiple
times.

And she was struck in the face. Her nose
was broken.

The blows that he delivered to her would
have killed her.

It's not fair for parents to have to
wait two to three years to understand

happened to their kid.

Talk about cruel and unusual punishment.

We have a trial date set.

This is the moment, right, where we're
going to get answers. We're going to

figure out everything that happened. But
right before the gavel falls, there is

a move that stuns everyone.

There's going to be no trial in the
Brian Coburger case. This is breaking

Just came in an hour ago. I am not going
to lie.

I did not expect this.

Have you had enough time to decide
whether or not to plead guilty?

Yes. Are you pleading guilty freely and
voluntarily?

Yes. Has anyone threatened you or anyone
close to you to get you to plead

guilty? No.

Are you pleading guilty because you are
guilty?

Yes. It was kind of shocking, but also
not completely shocking when

you look at what was at stake.

I mean, he was looking at the
possibility of being convicted and

death by maybe firing squad.

And so his lawyers had fought tooth and
nail throughout this case to try to get

the death penalty removed.

Did you, on November 13, 2022, enter the
residence at 1122 King Road

in Moscow, Idaho, with the intent to
commit the felony crime of murder?

Yes.

The shock of that guilty plea was a
turning point. And online, I mean, the

reaction was instant.

Genuinely, nothing has made my jaw drop
quite like this. I literally gasped when

I read this because I didn't believe it.

The whole time where he kind of alluded
to the fact that there was someone else

involved, no, it was just him. It is
abundantly clear immediately that this

for the families of Kaylee, Madison,
Zanna, and Ethan is not well received.

for the family of Kaylee Gonsalves, they
expressed their frustration through

social media posts and media
appearances.

We were asked if we had a...

ever been offered a plea deal or gave
one. We're not in it. We're in it for

death penalty. The choice is he could be
fired at or he could take a shot.

Those are the two options that we would
agree to.

If it would have got to negotiations, we
would have negotiated a lot better. You

know, he didn't force him to say that he
did it solo by himself, didn't force

him to prove that he was wearing the
suit or show us where the knife is to

chief.

There were two families who were
vehemently opposed to the plea deal.

Gonsalves' family said that the state of
Idaho let them down.

They wanted answers. They wanted a
trial.

Santa Cronodle's father, Jeff Cronodle,
was vehemently opposed to this plea

agreement. But look, for others, this
was a welcome relief to move forward.

We love you, Maddie, and we miss you.

We support the plea agreement 100%.

While we know there are some who do not
support it, we ask that they respect our

belief that this is the best outcome
possible for the victims, their

and the state of Idaho.

We have closure.

We embark on a path of hope and healing.

One of the ongoing tragedies of this
case is that we're just never going to

learn what his true motivations were.
Why did he pick this house? Why did he

pick this people? Why did he pick this
night?

It's imperative at sentencing that
families have the opportunity to give

called a victim impact statement.

It's their one opportunity that they get
to look the perpetrator in the eyes and

really tell them how they've destroyed
their lives.

For beautiful, genuine, compassionate
people

were taken from this world for no
reason.

He didn't just take their life.

He took the light that carried it into
every room.

On November 13th, 2022, a piece of my
heart was ripped away.

There's no way to...

losing my sister and my best friend.

She truly did live every day to the
fullest.

Yet her story was cut short by an act of
evil.

bound by this courtroom.

It's not just a random crime. It's a

It's an act that someone chose to do to
complete strangers.

And that type of act is really hard for
the human mind to grasp.

Which could be the case. I don't see
this as this grandiose thing where he

trying to get away with it. I think he
had this compulsion, this need, this

necessity to do it. And he's probably
always wanted to do it and finally said,

it. I'm going to do it.

You know, a lot of people thought that
this story was over after the formal

sentence saying, not the case.

We have learned so much more information
about who Brian Koberger was before

these killings. And I will tell you.

The details are incredibly chilling.

Police end up speaking to many of
Koberger's PhD classmates at Washington

University, and they said he made them
uncomfortable.

He would often say misogynistic and
homophobic things. He was very

to women.

You had another who said that he felt
verbally kidnapped when he was stuck

having to speak to Brian Koberger in the
reports.

They revealed that there were 13, 13
formal complaints made against Brian

Koberger in the months before these
killings.

During the quiet morning hours of
November 13, 2022, a faceless coward

breached the tranquility of six
beautiful young people and senselessly

slaughtered four of them.

Even if I could force him to speak,
which legally I cannot, how could anyone

ever be assured that what he speaks is
the truth?

I hereby sentence Mr. Kohlberger as
follows.

On count one, burglary.

Ten years fixed.

First degree murder. I sentence the
defendant to a fixed term of life

imprisonment without the possibility of
parole.

The sentences on count one, two, three,
four, and five shall run consecutively

to one another.

I think what most people are asking is
the why.

You know, it's something we're just
never going to know for sure.

Crimes like this, where he seemed to
want to try to prove something to

this is the type of ego that sort of
forces people one day to talk about it.

He's going to want the attention. He's
going to want to talk about it. For now,

we have to wait.

The evidence suggested that there was a
reason that this particular

house was chosen.

What that reason is, we don't know.

I have to be perfectly candid.

I don't believe that there's anything
that would come out of his mouth that

would be the truth.

After the sentencing, we got almost a
treasure trove of new information that

hadn't had before, and it really shed a
new light at the brutality of these

crimes. It included information in
regards to a potential stalker that was

around the house prior to the murders.

Also, there was an incident where the
door was off the frame and needed to be

fixed. In addition, witnesses saw
Kaylee's dog barking into the woods with

explanation.

Brian Kohlberger groomed Kaylee's dog
Murphy, training him to his scent and

face so that he wouldn't cause an alarm
when Kohlberger entered their premises

to unalive them? What? The way this is
premeditated is crazy work.

He just had extreme obsessive behaviors,
like with his mother and father,

with the abnormal porn searches, serial
killers.

I believe by looking at his computer
that he was paranoid in the end. I don't

think he was just resting easy thinking
he got away with these murders. I think

he knew that people were coming for him.

That home on King Road is now just an
empty lot. It was torn down more than a

year after the murders.

All that's left is just a memory of the
horrors that happened that November 9th.

That person who did that horrible,
horrible thing is now never going to see

free light of day ever again. That's
what's important. I think I'm hoping

that'll help start bring some closure.

We can begin to move on and the healing
can begin.

My heart still goes out to the families.

This will never end for them.

I pray for their peace and healing.

All crimes are senseless, but this one
is one of the more heinous and senseless

that I have ever seen.

You had four beautiful young people who
went to bed and they were murdered

in a place where they should have felt
safe.

Evil walked into that house on King Road
and stole their lives and their

promise.

And ended it all for no reason.
