there are legends of strange
unidentified creatures

stretching back
hundreds of years.

This program is a
legend brought to life.

It's told through dramatization,
eyewitness accounts and expert

interviews.

Some images are
violent in nature.

There's a monster
that'll come out the marsh

and grab you up in a heartbeat.

WOMAN: Something is killing
animals around here.

Just because you don't
believe don't mean you're safe.

WOMAN: Did you heart that?

[inaudible]

WOMAN: Some people go into the
swamp, they don't come out.

NARRATOR: A dangerous
predator is terrorizing

this remote southern
Louisiana town.

Whatever did that is big.

NARRATOR: Some
locals are beginning

to blame a legendary swamp
beast they call the Rougarou.

Mystery surrounds the
recent finding of the body

of local man Amos Jagneaux.

YANCY GUERIN: He was trying to
survive by eating animals, raw.

NARRATOR: And now the
Sheriff's Department

is being inundated
with strange calls.

What the hell is this?

NARRATOR: Animal mutilations--

These animals
were [inaudible]..

NARRATOR: --missing people, and
the discovery of a massive bone

pile containing animal
and human remains.

What the hell?

NARRATOR: As law enforcement
investigates this unnerving

finding--

Hey, everything all right?

NARRATOR: --the local animal
control team, Cagin Beasts,

scours the swamplands for two
boys who have gone missing.

Over there, over there.

Go.

Jacob!

Jonah!

Look, you've got to stop.

You hear me?

I just hope we find
them before dark.

We figure those boys
were heading out to where

Amos' body was found dead.

There it is.

That was right over here.

You know, that's bad
enough, but it gets worse.

They're going to be going
right to the center of where

a lot of troubling things
have been going down.

The hiker that gone missing was
found over in this area, here.

We got Gaudet's
Farm, the cemetery,

and the sugar mill all circle
around this stretch of swamp.

We're heading right
here, in the dead center.

Once we charted this all
down, it looks pretty clear,

whatever's terrorizing
this place,

odds are, it calls
this area home.

So we've got to find
these boys first,

before whatever it is we're
hunting out here gets to 'em.

You get into the swamp,
you don't know what you're

going to run across.

There's plenty of things that
you can run into in that swamp.

[growling]

But the Rougarou is
your worst enemy.

I know it from growing up as the
Lupgarou, the French werewolf.

My grandpa come across
the Pearl River Bridge,

a big hairy monster run
out in front of him.

About eight feet,
400 to 500 pounds.

Stopped and looked at him and
then took off running again.

He said it scared
him pretty good.

When people go missing, we
say the Rougarou got them.

So this camera is really good.

It can pick up heat signatures
700 yards off the ground.

It's pretty good
about penetrating

through this vegetation too.

So as long as the
foliage isn't too thick,

we should be able to find them.

It's just blobs.

I mean, how are we going
to tell what's what?

Well, you see anything
that's orange and red,

that's going to be a mammal.

So-- so something that
size out of the water,

it's almost certain to be human.

Alligators or snakes,
anything cold-blooded,

that will register
as blue and purple.

I did discover that polar
bears, they don't show up

on thermal scan either.

Their insulation is so
good that all you see

is their cute little
noses and ears.

Let's just focus
on finding these boys

or whatever animal has been
causing all that trouble.

The phone's been ringing
nonstop at the station

in the last 48 hours.

It seems like every
call we're getting

is harder to believe
than the previous one.

Now, I've heard from five
separate people, five,

that they seen Amos Jagneaux
lurking around town.

This is the guy we
found face down,

dead in the swamp a
couple of days ago.

Whew.

Yeah.

First we heard was
that someone stormed

into the coroner's
and-- and took the body.

But now folks are swearing
that Amos just got up

during his autopsy and
just walked out the morgue.

Everyone is just spinning
tales and jumping at shadows.

It's just making our jobs harder
to tell what's really going on.

And that ain't exactly
unusual for down here.

[dog barking]

Just when you think you
can let your guard down,

boom, somebody disappears,
bad things start happening.

The Sheriff, he knows.

There's nothing that he can do.

He can control the natural,
people stealing from stores

or breaking in houses, but he
can't control the supernatural.

I mean, this is
something way bigger

than anything anybody with a
badge and a bullet can stop.

You don't know who could have
been taken by the Rougarou

or an evil spirit.

By day, they may look normal.

At night, you don't know
what they could do to you.

It makes you thankful
every day to wake up

and see the sunrise, actually.

[police radio chatter]

PATRICE LAMBERT: I got a call
about a disturbance in town.

Apparently, someone is selling
something that's supposed

to keep the Rougarou away.

[police siren in short bursts]

[police radio chatter]

[door opens]

[inaudible].

Might as well
be selling napalm.

Napalm?

I put a bottle of that
[bleep] by my stove,

and it practically
burned down my kitchen.

You know, it blew up.

Rougarou repellent.

Rougarou repellent.

You spray this on your
doorstep, all the evil spirits

repel right away.

[bleep] smells
like paint thinner.

FRANKLIN: You ain't supposed
to leave it near an open flame.

Oh, I see.
It's my fault.

Hold on.
Both of y'all, come here.

This is what burned
down your kitchen, huh?

MAN WITH COMPLAINT: Yep.

Imagine that.

Gasoline burns.

You can't be selling this
to folks unsuspecting.

Give that man back his money.

You know, my family's been
around here a long time.

People could learn
from what I know.

But you know back
at the cemetery,

this guy's grave didn't
have a head one on it.

Somebody done snatched
that head right off of it.

Anyone can tell you, that
dead man, when he was alive,

this was some really bad Hoodoo.

They say he knew how to
conjure up a Rougarou.

Hell, one person even
said he was Rougarou.

Whatever son of a bitch took
that hand got that Rougarou

curse right along with it.

You'll start seeing the
truth soon enough, though.

Ever since word got out
about that decapitated corpse,

folks around town been
insisting that head was stolen

because the dead
guy was a Rougarou.

Now, these people say if you
have a part of a dead person

believed to be possessed
while they were alive,

then you can use that body part
for some serious dark magic.

Now, I think that's all
a bunch of nonsense,

but the locals don't.

So the more these old wives
tales start gaining traction,

the more time and
energy my department

has to spend trying
to calm them down.

Now that, that's real to me.

Last thing we need is two
kids to go missing out here.

Those stories would never stop.

Oh, we'll find
them, all right.

canopy is pretty dense.

I hope we can make sense
of what we're seeing here

on the monitor.

All those small red and
orange signatures are probably

just squirrels and nutria,
you know, anything like that.

There's something bigger there.

There's definitely
something bigger there.

Yeah, it could be human.

so it might be them.

As far as we can tell,
they're staying put.

Their readings
look pretty warm.

I'd say they're probably alive.

a pack of wolves.

It looks like they
just took down a deer.

I almost walked into a damn pack
of wolves munching on a stag.

So we're going to see if
we can touch down near you

and catch a boat
your way, all right?

LUC BAPTISTE (ON RADIO): Yeah.

I hope you guys will be more
help down here on the ground.

Even if you see
those boys, you're

not going to be able to
help them from up there.

TAMMANY D'ENTREMENT
(ON RADIO): Copy that.

There's no airport
anywhere near here,

so legally, any private
land could be your helipad,

as long as there's enough room.

We called in a
favor to the fellow

that we helped get some
bats out of his attic.

So we're borrowing
a boat from him.

It shouldn't take us long.

We should be there in about
an hour and a half or so.

[insects buzzing]

Heads up.

These trees,
they're rotted out.

We call them widow makers.

If the boat bumps
into it hard enough,

the top will come crashing down.

It will put and end
to you real quick.

Swamps might come across as
a very calm and still place,

but they can be a very
dynamic environment.

One example would be the Corne
sinkhole that threatened part

of Louisiana recently.

A sinkhole that formed
as a result of excavation

under the earth of a salt mine
that eventually collapsed.

This collapsed salt dome caused
a sinkhole 25 acres in size

that led to a hole
200 feet deep,

opening so quickly that 300
people had to be evacuated.

That's the kind
of extreme change

that I don't think most
people can really imagine.

You're talking about the ground
falling out from under you

to a depth hundreds of feet.

Whole mature trees
vanishing into this hole

that just suddenly occurs.

That's an example of how
quickly things can change, even

in an environment that
otherwise seems pretty stable.

A whole mess of things
out here that will kill you.

Most folks' minds go
straight to gators.

To tell you the truth, they
ain't at the top of the list.

You got venomous snakes,
poisonous spiders.

They sneak up on you.

The further out you
go, the worse it gets.

better if we'd just pick up

if we just find

the trail of the animal
that's causing all the carnage

around here.

You know what really
concerns me most

is those kids crossing
its path first.

They wouldn't stand a chance.

If you're lost in the swamp,
the best thing you can do

is sit tight.

You stay with your boat.

They're going to find that boat.

If you keep venturing and
getting into a panic mode,

you're in trouble.

They're going to find
your boat and not you.

There's people,
they go off fishing,

and they just disappear.

Because there are
some places in that

swamp that the Devil
wouldn't even go to.

You get lost out there, nature
will start creeping in on you.

Your mind starts
playing with you.

And the darker it gets, the
more it makes a grown man cry.

[growls]

Right there in the trees.

Maybe we just keep
moving along, man.

Jules, I don't see any signs
that the boys been up here.

I think we should

East Bank, just past

where Amos' body was found.

Jules found a string with
a bunch of those figures,

somewhat like the one
we found near Amos.

He thinks it has
something to do with that.

I'm not so sure.

So just in case
you were curious,

the stories around town now
have Amos rising from the dead

and tearing his way out of here.

Now, I can take full
statement, unless you want

to file it yourself.

I had about six of his
family members come by here.

I was locking the place up,
and they come barreling on

into the parking lot.

But they made their
intent very clear.

They wanted to take Amos' body.

Did they threaten you?

No.

Parish law allows them to bury
someone on their property.

They just have
certain hurdles we

have to overcome, certain
paperwork we have to fill out.

So where does that leave us?

I've got an account
where that body's at.

You can't just go
bury human remains

and not have it documented.

I need you to go out
to the Jagneauxs'.

If they're not willing to
fill out the paperwork,

I'll have it filled
out for them.

A lot easier said than done.

before it turns into its natural
state and not human anymore.

make the sign of the cross

and hope you don't have to
deal with the Jagneauxs.

I don't think they plan
on burying the body.

To tell you the truth,
it wouldn't surprise me

if they dumped that straight
in a feeding trough.

eat old Amos themselves.

area through advertising

their presence by
a variety of means.

One type of evidence,
scratches or claw marks.

They'll rake a tree to
indicate their presence.

Through vocalizations, not
only communication of--

of their presence, but
also an advertisement

that they are in the area.

The use of breaking vegetation,
breaks the tops of trees,

may be a mechanism for
indicating territorial claims.

And some of them are
remarkably impressive,

where the-- you know,
a sizable tree trunk

has been twisted and
bent to the point

that the fibers
within that hardwood

have just literally exploded.

we used to walk the woods.

And we saw something red
coming through the grass,

peeling the grass on both sides.

We were hunting
rabbits, and we shot.

[gunshots]

They never did stop.

[laughs] We went
back the next day,

all the grass was all smashed.

But there was no footprint.

Well, that tells you

Some say it was a Rougarou.

really believe in the legend.

Now, some folks say the lights,
that's the pirate's lanterns.

And if you follow that,
they're trying to show you

where the buried treasure is.

But then you got other folks
that say those lights are

like the angry spirits.

They'll lead you down
a path to disaster.

business following

them lights out there.

It seems like a good way to
end your life right there, man.

following these totems, like,

hanging in the trees,
along the shoreline.

They're to avoid danger.

worry about those boys

till we find your friends.

They're in a real bad place.

This part of the swamp, we have
legends of what lives here.

Demons, evil spirits,
whatever you believe,

truth is it's a place you
don't want to go unless you're

prepared not to come back.

The best hunting
grounds are deep in.

So are the dark places.

But they've been there for
a while and as a warning.

to do with the Rougarou.

TRAPPER: Yeah.

The Rougarou is
one of the spirits

- that we're told live here.
- Spirit?

I thought it was supposed to be
like a werewolf or something.

No, that's the Cajun myth,
a curse that passes from one

person to another.

Our Rougarou is a
spirit, part of nature.

My uncle, he once
described it as a thing

that drives an animal to kill.

You see a snake
coiled and resting,

and suddenly it
strikes out, it just

gets vicious out
of nowhere, that's

the Rougarou taking control.

Christians talk about angels
and demons, invisible beings

influencing the
things around them.

The Rougarou, it's a demon.

A demon that
possesses and kills.

A predator spirit.

One of the legends
of the Rougarou

is that it is a shape shifter.

That it's able to take on
the form of another creature,

like a wolf, or actually take
possession of another being

and influence that person's
thoughts and actions

and spirit.

And as such, you
know, we've really

crossed into the paranormal.

So it becomes much
more subjective,

based on personal experience,
personal interpretation.

That makes it very
difficult to evaluate

in an objective fashion.
