The crime committed against Mrs.

stirs up vengeful emotions in most of
us. It makes us want to get up.

But we can't work that way.

We have laws.

We have police.

When we feel justified in enforcing the
law for ourselves,

well, chaos is right around the corner.

Last night, saying goodnight to my son,
I thought about how I would react if

someone hurt him in a brutal, degrading,
painful way.

And how I'd feel if that person was
somehow let go.

Given the sudden opportunity to right
that wrong, would I be able to control

myself?

much as Carol loves hers to lose
