had struggles in

program is in dire need

of new uniforms and
better equipment.

of the track team.

know that growing up,

I had it pretty rough.

what sports can do

for a child's self-esteem
and development.

I know what it feels
like to be overlooked,

it takes to be successful.

Our young athletes need
support in order to feel

that sense of belonging.

That sense that what
they do matters to us,

and that we're willing
to put our dollars

toward them directly.

talking about winning,

I'm talking about
connecting a healthy body

to a healthy mind.

I'm talking about
personal challenges

leading to personal success.

I'm Ella Hawthorne.
I'm new to this school.

I just transferred
from the DC system.

after school music program here

at East Heights, and let me tell
you, the situation is dire.

And trust me, dire isn't even
a strong enough word for it.

current music room.

Not only is it dreary and
completely uninspiring but

it also reeks of mold.

Mr. Adler, here, spoke
about the need for our kids

to feel supported,
that what they do matters.

It's clear that the music
program at this school

has not been a priority.

Yet, musical education and
the arts are paramount

for the development
of the teenage brain.

Did you know that learning
and playing music

can actual increase IQ.

[Ella] It also improves memory,

it makes learning
new languages easier,

not to mention all the
social and emotional benefits

such as raising
self-esteem and confidence.

Kids who play music in a band
setting learn skills like

discipline, patience,
teamwork, collaboration.

It is scientifically proven

that playing music has
countless positive effects.

And I believe that the
kids at this school

deserve those advantages.

into better colleges,

but also to enjoy more well
rounded and fulfilling lives.
