we're doing Mount Rushmore

the Badlands were completely underwater

then when the oceans went away

these volcanoes started blowing up

and spewing ash everywhere

everything left behind by the ocean and volcanoes

piled up for millions of years

and voila badlands

they find like saber tooth tiger remains here

they find Triceratops Tyrannosaurus Rex

I mean

there's tons of Dinosaur fossils that they pull up

from this whole area

while I was researching our trip to Mount Rushmore

I saw that we'd be passing through Gold Country

and I found this guy on the internet

who actually pans for gold

and gold happens to be something

that I knew would appeal to my father

now this guy I spoke to

his name is is Rattlesnake Randy

oh sounds like a good chap

nice job and

he's been prospecting in these hills for a long time

and when I spoke obviously

I haven't caught any well no

I was talking to him I was like

what's the likelihood of finding gold

he said there'd be gold in them there hills

so this whole area was settled

pretty much because of gold

people have been prospecting here since

like the late 1800s this is

this is my Costa del Oro I think it is

and apparently

General Custer originally discovered gold in the area

and because of that

people started flocking to the area to strike it rich

they have on the ground mines there

don't they yeah

big time and

I read about this one mine

that produced over 2 tons of gold

wow

panning for gold is not getting in the river

um I'm not getting in the river

when I spoke to him

he said we'll be digging in the river

by the sound of it

you can dig on the Riverbank and stuff and

and sift through a pan

I was really excited to go panning for gold

my expectations were

I thought we'd be knee deep in river water

and we ain't gonna get dizzy

when I first got here yeah

the wall went there was one

well five women to about 300 guys

so the next stop on our road to Rushmore was

something I knew he would think was the bomb

a decommissioned Minuteman nuclear missile site

General National Historic Site

we're coming by the facility

and I just want to make sure we have the uh

the right directions if you see the house

it's the only house you're gonna see ah

okay with the big antenna

this whole place is a barbecue pretty much

so in the 1950s

America had nukes like all over the western states

and Russia had a buttload of their own

pointed right back at us over here in the US

so if they launch

we launch mutually assured destruction

Cold War period

you've got this huge build up of tension

between the Soviet Union and the US

so both sides are trying to beat each other out

in the build up of their weapons

we decided that we needed something that could respond

quickly be placed out in the frontier

withstand a wide range of temperatures

and that became the Minuteman

how long would it take a missile from here

to reach Russia about 28 minutes

wow and is that going out into the Strat

like out into space and back in or just going

well that's one of the reasons

why the missiles were placed here

in the first place

we are the closest we could get to the Soviet Union

cause these missiles are going up over the North Pole

oh right over the North Pole

yeah yes

Alaska

they could be taken out pretty easily by Soviet subs

at the time

so putting them in the central part of the country

kind of had built in defense

now this antenna is

a very significant part of the Minot Man program

if this site

were blown completely off the face of the earth

there was a plane in the air for 30 years

called the Looking Glass plane

and that plane could send an ultra

high frequency signal directly to that antenna

launch all 10 missiles associated with this site

wow did locals know that this facility was here

and that there were silos around

they did the folks who lived here

literally lived with 1.2 megaton

nuclear missiles in their backyards

another giant mountain sculpture

the Crazy Horse Monument it's still under construction

Sculptor Korczak Jakuszewski

came into the Black Hills to work on Mount Rushmore

he was one man who

decided to build this entire Monument by himself

and it was dedicated to Crazy Horse

who was the Lakota chief

that kicked Custer's ass at Little Bighorn

after Corzack died

his wife and kids have been keeping his work going

to the welcome center we must go

I'm gonna offer a pay instantly

remember no peeing on the monuments

what we're looking at here is the 1/30 model actually

and so if you can imagine this 30 times bigger

10 to 15 years for the hand that's out stretched here

Deadwood

Deadwood was founded in 1874

during the Black Hills Gold Rush

and as you can probably tell from the name Deadwood

look there's lots of wood and it's dead

it was named after a bunch of dead trees

found in a gulch

it was a rough town known for gambling and gold

the famous gun slinger Wild Bill Hickok

met his maker here with a bullet in the back

oh look cemetery

when I was a young boy I had a fixation about death

you still do I still play in cemeteries all the time

you used to tell me when I was a kid

the skeleton's gonna come out and grab you

and I used to be terrified
