Narrator: All right, time to start building.

So go ahead and open up your AdventureWorks report,

head to the report view.

This is where we'll spend most

of our time in this section of the course.

You may still have some visuals

like this slicer and matrix from the DAK section.

Feel free to delete those.

We want to start with a nice blank canvas here.

Now I want to take just a minute or two to walk through

the interface and get you nice and comfortable.

And then what we'll do is create the report pages

based on our sketch and start to add

some of the basic shapes

and images that will form the foundation for our dashboard.

Now starting with the ribbon here,

the two views that we're gonna really be focusing on

are the insert and the view options.

So for insert, this is where we can access

all the different visuals to add to your canvas.

I like to kind of drill down to see more details

about each of these visuals.

You'll notice you've got access to AI visuals here as well,

which we're gonna cover in the next section of the course.

And this is also where you can access

all of those basic elements

like text boxes, buttons, shapes and images.

Now, one thing to note,

if you don't see visuals included here in the insert

or the home tab right here,

you may be using an older version of Power BI,

in which case you'll access those

from a visualizations pane.

That pane no longer exists as of around April, 2023

so you can still accomplish the exact same thing.

The process just looks a little bit different

depending which version of Power BI you're using.

So that's the insert menu, in view,

this is where you'll find pre-built themes and styles.

You can change the page view.

We're gonna be practicing building custom mobile layouts

for app users later in the section.

You can activate things like grid lines,

snap to grid, lock objects for editing.

For now, we're gonna leave all three

of those unchecked and out worth talking

about these show panes options here in a bit of depth.

One thing you'll notice

is that you can turn on these panes on and off.

That's gonna either show or hide those drawers

here on the right side of the page.

One thing that I've noticed that is really helpful

is that if you activate all of the ones that you want,

in this case we're gonna be using filters,

data format, bookmarks and selection.

It's actually gonna create this little compressed version

or sidebar here, so that you can simply click

and click again to show

and hide those tabs without having to navigate back

to the view ribbon every single time.

So a little bit of a time saver there.

Down here on the left you'll see tabs.

Each tab represents a report page

and on the right you've got your view options,

zoom in, zoom out, fit to page.

So let's go ahead and create the structure

for a dashboard based on our sketch.

And remember that first view,

that first report page is our executive dashboard.

So you can go ahead, double click to give it a new name,

click plus to add a new report page.

This one will be our map.

Next one will be product detail.

And then the fourth for now will be customer detail.

So those are the four views

that we decided we're gonna build here.

Let's jump back to Exact Dashboard and practice

actually inserting some objects into our canvas.

All right, so we'll head to the insert menu

and we're gonna start by adding an image.

Go ahead and navigate

to wherever you've downloaded the course resources,

here I've got all of the graphics

and icons that I'm gonna be using for this dashboard.

And right now we want the AdventureWorks logo, PNG file.

So I'm gonna double click, that's gonna drop it right here

in my canvas, and I can resize, drag it around

and move it to wherever I want on my canvas.

I'm gonna zoom out just a bit to make sure I can see

each of the edges here.

And that looks fine for now.

We can always fine tune later.

Next thing I wanna do is add some rounded rectangles,

which will essentially create the background shapes

for those big KPI numbers,

those cards that we're gonna add here

at the top of the report page.

So to do that I'm gonna head

to insert, shapes, rounded rectangle.

That's gonna drop it right here

on the canvas with the default styling.

You'll note these red lines kind of help with alignment,

which is a nice feature.

And I'm gonna go ahead

and right click to open up the format pane here.

And this is where I can drill into all sorts

of options related to that selected object or chart.

This is a contextual menu.

It will look different depending on what you've selected.

And you may have also noticed

two new contextual menus up here in the ribbon

once you have an object selected,

you've got format and data drill.

Don't worry about data and drill for now.

We're gonna cover that in a later lesson.

But the format options are actually really, really helpful.

These should look familiar if you've used other tools

in the office suite like PowerPoint or Excel.

But they let you do things like change the Z index,

like moving objects forward or backwards on the canvas

or aligning or distributing multiple objects,

which is actually very, very helpful here.

And we'll use it quite a bit.

So let's go back to our shape

and let's give it a nice format.

You can follow along

with the exact formatting adjustments that I'm making

or you can apply your own style, totally up to you.

What I'm gonna do here is drill into my shape style options

and I'm gonna change the rounded rectangle a little bit

to 15%, just a little bit less of a rounded corner there.

I'm gonna change the fill color to this medium dark gray.

We're gonna use this quite a bit throughout the report.

And then we actually don't need a border,

so I can turn that one off.

And just to make sure I'm sizing this exactly how I want,

I can change my size and position options here.

So let's do a height of 100 pixels

and a width of 225.

I think that should be a good size for what we need to do.

I'm gonna drag this kind of roughly in place here.

And now what I'm gonna do is Control C to copy.

I'm gonna paste it three more times.

Control V, grab that last version,

and that last one's gonna be somewhere over here

on the report page.

And check this out.

Now what I can do is kind of rough these in a little bit

and then select a blank spot on the canvas.

Grab all four of those rounded rectangles,

head to format, align, distribute horizontally, align,

align top.

So that's looking pretty good.

Still a little bit tight I think.

So I'm gonna use the arrows

to kind of fine tune this just a little bit,

select them again, format, align, distribute horizontally.

That looks pretty good.

Now last thing I wanna do

in this lesson is add another shape,

this time just a regular rectangle.

And I wanna create the background

for that navigation on the left side here.

So I'm gonna resize it so it goes top to bottom.

Can activate that format pain again like so,

let's change the size

to a 45 width, which actually looks good.

And all we need to do here is in the shape style options.

Let's just change the fill color

to that same dark gray and turn off the border.

So I think that's gonna give us a nice background

for the page navigation buttons that will create later on.

And because this navigation bar will exist

on every page of our report, I'm gonna go ahead and copy it

and paste it into our map page, our product detail page

and our customer detail page as well.

So I think that should do it for now.
