and returned home.

They've lost a leg,
an arm or two,

they're burned and blinded.

aren't as much of a problem.

on the battlefields.

But the half-alive,

that's why they built
a hospital in Clay City.

I've always thought
there should be a law

requiring every citizen to visit
a place like this

at least once a year,

so they know what happens
to their heroes

after the battle is over.

to put me on the defensive,

because I came out of the war
better off than these men,

You know, yours was
the first herd of cattle

that Craig Kern had seen
on the trail

since before the war began.

Yeah, doctor was telling me
you're a good drover.

Well, I was.

Mr. Favor says
he might be able to use you.

what I've been doing here

the last five years?

GARDNER:
Craig was wounded in the retreat
from Atlanta.

Badly wounded.

He needed major surgery.
If he didn't get it, he'd die.

It was the kind of surgery
from which very few,

if any, ever recovered.

The pain was too great,
the shock.

The man had to be strapped down
so the surgeon could operate.

But I had something new
I could use.

A wonder medicine.

It eased the patient's pain
and kept him asleep

so that the operation
could go on.

So I used it on Craig.
I operated.

Now, he recovered 100 percent
from the wound.

But he's never recovered
from the medicine.

What kind of medicine
was it?

An alkaloid. A juice derived
from a poppy seed.

A few different names for it,

all of them based on the fact

that the god of sleep
in ancient Greek was Morpheus,

so they called it morphia,
or morphinium.

Well, the name doesn't matter.

The effect it has on certain
patients does.

They can't get along
without this medicine.

They need it
for the rest of their lives.

They can't live without it.

for five years.

thought he might have a chance

to break out of the trap
he was in,

before the war came along,
made a soldier out of him,

a hero,

and a cripple.

Might have a chance to stop
taking that medicine,

live like anybody else.

I don't know, maybe he never
really had a chance.
