- [Huck] You don't know about
me without you having read

some books made by Mr. Mark
Twain, but that ain't no matter.

Them books was about
some of the best adventuring

me and Tom Sawyer ever had.

My best friend.

Now Mr. Mark Twain wrote the truth mainly.

There were some things he stretched,

but mainly he told the truth.

I reckon the biggest lie he told,

and I ain't ever seen anybody
but lie one time or another,

was what they call the lie of old mittens.

'Cause see, while Mr. Mark
Twain sure did write down

an awful lot of them adventures,
he never wrote them all.

Suppose me and Tom were just more full

of adventuring than his
poor wrist could handle.

(mid-tempo music)

Now its honest he wrote about
the murder in the graveyard

Tom and me saw, and Muff
Potter getting blamed for it,

and me and Tom being took for dead,

and then coming back to tell the truth

that it was Injun Joe who done it.

And he wrote about Tom and Becky Thatcher

getting lost in that cave,

the very same one me and
Tom'd find all that treasure,

and Injun Joe'd find his fate.

And it's true Mr. Mark
Twain later helped me

write about my own adventuring,

escaping my drunk pap
and heading the wrong way

down the river to free Jim from slavery.

Them adventures was
plenty, with feuding families,

missing heirs and a pair
of con men would-be-royals;

the Duke of Bilgewater
and the King of France.

Tom even showed up in
Arkansas and got shot in the leg!

And there was others
too that made the page.

About me and Tom turning genuine detectives

and catching a killer, or
that time me, Tom and Jim

were all taken hostagated
in a balloon bound for Africa.

(mid-tempo music)
And maybe,

maybe them adventures is enough,

maybe them history books are full up.

Certainly would've done me.

I never went looking for
no trouble. But Tom Sawyer.

Tom Sawyer was a magnet for them adventures

and I reckon maybe I was
a magnet for Tom Sawyer.

Best friends stick together,

and sticking together got
me into plenty of tight spots.

Plenty of tight spots Mr. Mark
Twain never even knew about.

(mosquitoes buzzing)

(both slapping insects)

Surprised our sign didn't
scare off that huckster, Tom.

You sure his camp's
gonna be this far inland?

- That rascal's a smart
one, that's for sure.

(tense music) He reckoned most folks

woulda come to your conclusions, Hucky.

And how bad the
skeeters get hereabouts

in the summer, well, most'd reckon

a sane man couldn't stand it.

But he can't outsmart a
coupla detectives, with pedigree,

like us.

(mid-tempo music)

- [Huck] Now I never been accused of having

a pedigree my whole life Tom.

(mid-tempo music continues)

- How's that vinegar working for you, Huck?

- The only thing for skeeters Tom.

That and possum guts, but
don't got none of them handy.

- You know, this nickle bottle of repellent

seems to be more an attractant.

Could you spare a few splashes

to help me keep those parasites at bay?

- They's bloodsuckers Tom,
but, that's how they're made.

Don't gotta call 'em that mean a name.

- Well Hucky, that's what they are.

- You're cold, Tom Sawyer.

Pap Finn used to call me that. Parasite.

I reckon I've been called
worse but I don't know when.

- Huck Finn, you blatherskite,
that's what they are!

A parasite is a critter that
lives off something else,

like how skeeters have to
suck our blood to survive!

(soft music)

- I wish I didn't know that Tom.

Didn't know Pap thought
of me as a blood sucker.

- Not to speak ill of the dead, Huck,

but I wouldn't put no stock into anything

your Pap Finn ever said.

Besides, he meant it
in a metaphorical sense.

Like you live off folk,

'cause you use to skip out of school

and didn't have no occupation.

But it ain't nothing, Huck.

- Even so...

- Hucky. You ain't no parasite.

Not the blood sucking kind,
nor the metaphorical kind.

(mid-tempo music continues)

Now this huckster we're
hunting up, Mr. James Holden,

now he's a parasite and ain't a place

for that kind in this world.

Selling the whole blamed
town of St. Petersburg

on buying brand new security systems

for their homes and shops.

Stirring up all kinds of trouble,

and getting the whole town
worried over some robberies

that happened 20 miles down the river.

And getting them to turn on
their friends, and neighbors,

and not trust anyone, even the postmaster,

and a good, righteous guy like Jim.

And then, all of a sudden,

during Sunday go to meeting time,

ransacking the whole blame
town and making for the river.

- That's how I figured it too, Tom.

With no steamboats
due till tomorrow morning,

guess he has to be out
here. (suspenseful music)

Lest he paddled for the Illinois shore.

- Nah, that rascals still here.

(birds tweeting)

- [Huck] A dead fall!

- Yep.

Looks like he rigged up some of his

security traps out here too.

Had we tripped the pull line

the wire would've
dropped that counterweight

(clicks fingers)

and we'd be captives fast.

I read, Hucky, that wire drops

at 32.2 foot per second squared.

- Them big words just to
say you ain't outrunning it.

- [Tom] Sure.

It's all account of potential
and kinetic energy, Hucky.

- [Huck] I think it's all account a

everything that goes
up has gotta come down.

- Exactly, Huck, that's just
another way of saying it.

See, that big cage back there
had the potential for energy,

because gravity was pulling
on it, trying to bring it down,

but couldn't, account
of the counter weight.

But you trip the counter weight,

well gravity gets a hold and-

(slaps at a mosquito) Exactly Huck!

See once gravity gets a hold

all that energy that the
cage had the potential to have,

well, it grows into it real quick!

You got to remember that speed and mass

affect the amount of
kinetic energy an object has,

so a heavy cage way up there

just dropping would be a whopper!

- I don't need all the details Tom.

I reckon I get the big picture.

- Huck Finn,

this detective business
is all about the details.

- Tom!

A noise maker. (tense music)

This rascal is keeping
the thrills fresh, ain't he?

- Yep.

More potential energy
that'd make trouble for us

if'n it finds its legs, Huck.

If this sapling that's all bent back,

got free of this wire
and went back to normal

like it wants to-

- It'd make quite a ruckus huh, Tom?

- Sound travels at about
760 miles per hour, Hucky.

Best to avoid having to outrun that number.

(mid-tempo music continues)

- Reckon that Holden
still has Aunt Polly's Bible

he stole from outta her locked cabinet?

- I reckon he's still got
all his pilfering, Huck.

Won't fence it till he's a
few days from St. Petersburg,

the way I figure it.

- I reckon I never seen
no one so out of sorts

over a book, though, Tom.

She didn't even read that one,

otherwise she'd had it with
her when the crook struck.

- That's what they call
sentimentality, Huck Finn.

- Oh, I know that one, Tom.

I had an awful lotta
sentimentality over Joe Harper's

dead tooth I won off him playing marbles.

It may not be as good as that golden knob

he had once, Tom, but it was
the best thing I ever owned.

- That was a prize, Huck!

- And I wouldn't take
too kindly to some pilferer

makin' off with it, either.

Takin' all those folks
possessions, that they care about,

like how I cared about that rotten tooth.

It ain't right, Tom.

- I told you Hucky, a parasite.

Ain't a place in this
world for that kinda man.

(tense music)

Look past those trees.

- It's his camp, Tom.
- Shh!

I bet that trip wire'a
his last line of defense.

The warning trap to beat all warning traps.

- How's that one work, Tom?

Some kind of potential for kinetic energy?

- Well, it's hard to see
from where we are, Huck,

but, that's likely sure.

- I think it's best if we ought to avoid it

for sneaking in there.

- Wait a minute. Hucky, do I got an idea.

- How's that, Tom?

- Listen, we can use his traps against him.

Take the biggest amount of potential energy

and make it kinetic.

You go and head to the edge
of the woods and hide there.

But be sure to stay clear of the trails.

I got plans for them.

When you see me take off running,

that no good Holden should be right behind.

If he is, then you go in
and get back all his loot

so we can take it back
to them that it belongs to.

- Sure about this, Tom?

- Trust me, Hucky.

(dramatic music)

(cans clatter)

(Holden growls and jumps up)

- I see you coming, ya crook!

(dramatic music continues)

(gunshots firing)

- Tom!

(birds singing) (tense music)

- You think you're so clever?

- Where's Tom?

- They don't care for
you. You dirty street rat!

- I ain't a street rat.

- You pretending. I knew your pap.

Huckleberry Finn, you're
one of us, not one of them.

You see how quick they
are, to turn on one another.

To distrust, and suspect
their neighbors they'd known

their whole life of covetous and pilferin'.

You think they can think
of you any kind of way

besides a filthy,
mean-spirited son of Pap Finn,

the most useless man
this town has ever known?

You owe them nothing. (tense music)

You get me outta here, and
we can take off down river,

among our kind, living our way.

'Cause boy, we ain't nothing
but good old social parasites.

It's how we're made. It's who we are.

There ain't no place in
this world for our kind.

(Huck drops the sack)
(tense music continues)

- Sorry, I saw that my plan worked.

That this rascal forgot all about his trap

and walked right into it.

He just kept on blowing that pistol of his

and trying to get free.

I just kept running.

- I don't blame you none, Tom Sawyer.

- Did you get the swag?

- Aunt Polly's Bible and all.

- Then let's make tracks back
to town and get the Sheriff.

I'm sure he'll be mighty
interested in our days doings.

- Let me go! I promise I'll turn myself in.

I'll be a better man, the rest of my days.

(mosquitoes buzz) I swear!

- I say we should help me Tom.
At least with those skeeters.

- Now Huck, let it never
be said that Tom Sawyer

don't take no pity on his fellow man.

- But, Tom, I thought you
called that an attractant?

(Holden yells in pain)
(mosquitoes buzz wildly)

(gentle music)

(birds singing)

- [Huck] You shoulda
talked to me first, Tom.

- Hucky, how many years you known me?

- Too many Tom.

- And do I ever seek your consultation

on matters of business?

- You never tell me nothing

when there's something on the line,

especially when it's my something.

That mummified cat ya got there's

the only thing I got left from Cairo.

It's my pride and joy.

- Huck, it's the only way I
can get back that timepiece,

I told you!

But it's a gimme. There's no threat.

Ain't you learned by now?

I don't take a bet that ain't a gimme.

- You're more right than
wrong, sure enough Tom,

but you ain't always
right. (down-tempo music)

And every blame soul
in St. Petersburg knows

that 30-pounds of feathers is
heavier than a 10-pound stone.

- (laughs) Who said it weren't Hucky?

That ain't what I'm aiming to disprove.

- You bet your little brother...
- Half brother.

- All right, you bet Sid my mummy cat

that this bag of feathers
will land the same time

as his 10-pound stone when we drop 'em both

off Graver's Rise.

- That's what we spit on.

- Tom.

30 pounds is gonna fall a heck a lot faster

than a 10-pound stone.

Why, I reckon three times as fast.

- Think so, Huck?

- Seems right to me.

- And how's that, Huck?

- Well, you know, gravy,
and ian hurt ya, and all that,

all that book learning stuff.

Well, heavier something
is the quicker it falls,

stands to reason.

- Exactly, Huck! Stands to reason.

That's the trick.

- Tom, you done outfoxed so many sitches

around so many different ways,

this time you outfoxed yourself.

- Nah, Hucky.

It stands to reason but it
ain't the way it actually works.

See, when they fall,

objects regardless of they
mass or how much they weigh

fall at the same rate meaning, Hucky,

not the same speed but
the same acceleration.

That's 'cause the amount of force gravity

puts on a given object
is dependent on its mass.

So a heavy object with a lot of mass,

like that big bag of feathers

is pulled harder by gravity
than that 10-pound stone.

- If you say so, Tom.

- I says it.

Now, I told that little rapscallion

to keep mum about this whole affair.

- Did ya? I reckoned
you'd want a crowd, Tom.

- If'n we're quick we can
get these proceedings along

'fore Becky ever knows I
gave away that timepiece

she give me last time we courted.

- I think it was the last
time before the last time.

(people chattering)

- Maybe you're right, Hucky.

- But if you can't keep track
of your own romantic eskimos,

I suppose there's no chance no way.

(down-tempo music)

- Thomas Sawyer!

- Reckon she knows, Tom?

- Tom!

Are you the reason for this foolishness?

- Huck helped.

- [Irma] As usual.

- I told you this was another

Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn mess.

- Tom Sawyer, you are the
most narcissistic, humiliating,

self-obsessed courter that
I have ever seen in my life.

You know, Bo Laxley came
a courting just last week.

- [Irma] Bo Laxley.

- [Gwendoline] Now that's a
boy who keeps his nose clean.

- He came calling right after you,

but I was already spoken for,

and now I'm stuck with a
lifetime of these shenanigans!

- Oh, I'm sorry you
ain't a courtin' Bo, Becky.

- Nobody likes Bo Laxley!

to learn you on the
embarrassment I feel in my heart

when you're up to these troubles.

- Oh and Tom's real sorry

the theatrics, the spectacle.

I've been eyeing that
prize a while now, Tom.

I didn't even need it

It's just a pawn.

If'n I'm honest, thought I
might come in handy but,

I have to say I'm surprised
just how handy it came.

- 'Cause that's what
you're really after, ain't ya?

- When it's them that deserves it.

- Wait, hold on! I call time out.

(indistinct chatter from crowd)

- It looks like I'm fixing
to drop a bag of feathers.

- No, you're supposed to
dump them not drop them.

- Now Joe, we didn't
agree to no restrictions

on how I dropped my feathers.

- Afraid he's got you there, Sid.

- Except that ain't the truth.

This here, a signed contract
with one Huckleberry Finn,

owner of the collateral,

promises Tom Sawyer would
be dumping this bag of feathers

separate from the bag
from which they brought.

- [Girl] Did Huck really sign it?

(gentle music)

- Huck Finn, is the genuine signatory.

- I didn't know about your scheme, Tom.

I told you.

You should, you should
have told me about it.

(indistinct chatter)

What's the problem Becky?

30 pounds of feathers
is 30 pounds of feathers.

Won't it be the same, bag or no?

- So Tom though he'd outsmart Sid,

that Sid wouldn't know if
things fall at the same rate.

- Which they do.

- Right. But only if there
aren't other factors involved.

- Other factors?

- Like air.

- Air?

- It's what you breathe, Huckleberry.

- I know that! How's it affect it?

- Huckleberry, them
falling at the same rate's

only true if gravity is the only factor

on an object falling,

but they've gotten more
acting on 'em than gravity.

Air resists them falling too.

So the bag of feathers
and the 10-pound stone,

for all intents and purposes,
they's about the same density,

so they'll fall at the same time.

- But Huck, if you separate those feathers.

- That feather's barely
denser than a sheet of paper.

- Even with them falling at the same time,

some of them are gonna separate

and they'll be so beat by
the resistance of the air

that they'll just float and mosey on down

and land a good few
seconds after the stone.

- Tom!

Tom, take the trade.

Get your piece.

- Joe, let's start again.

(tense music)

- [Irma] I don't see what
you like about that Tom Sawer.

- Bested by his little brother, Sid.

(indistinct speech from the crowd)

- Show's over. And what a show!

- Tell him, Huck.

Tell him I don't mind about the piece.

- I reckon we've been
sharing a room too long.

Can't believe that little brat outfoxed me,

and those are right easy enough to come by.

Sometimes gets you humbled.

me about this new scheme

your cooking up to get
back what's ours from Sid?

- Now I am glad you say
that, Huckleberry Finn,

'cause I do get a new plan a-brewing, sure,

and it is a good one, but of course,

this time we can't take
nothing for granted.

We gotta be smart and not cocky.

- You knowed mine went further, Tom.

- Huck, you mullet-head.

'Sides, I gotta get two or
three more skips outta my toss.

On account of the physics, like I said.

You're supposed to
control the physics, Huck,

that's the game.

I don't know hardly nothing
about this business of

physics and stones skipping,
least of which how to grade it.

But seems to me though Tom,

that Huck's got the more logical point.

that's got it in spades, huh?

Look any chucklehead can
throw their arm outta socket

and get good distance,
but the form of the skips,

the dance of the stone on the water.

That's the real game.

- Well, I reckon you do make a good point-

nothing about this business.

- Well, what d'you look
for when you skip, Joe?

- The distance, like a real Missourian,

or something highfaluting like form?

- Well, I can't say I go for nothing, Huck.

I ain't never skipped no stone!

- Well Joe!

Stone skipping's right
up there with mumbly peg

and swimming for best summers pasttime

in all St. Petersburg.

I can't believe you missed out.

Well I can't stand it.

- What you at there, Tom?

- About time you got an
education in stone skipping, Joe.

Step one is find the right stone.

- Won't just any stone do?

- No way, Joe.

Get the wrong stone you might as well be

chucking Becky Thatcher in the water.

Get about the same distance.

- Well actually, Huck,

so long as you go by what the physics want

most rocks will skip some,

even a humongous rock if
you throw it hard enough.

But, for the absolute
most impressive results

the human arm can get,

certain kinds are the best.

See, here.

A nice stone with a flat
edge and a round base.

Now, in order to make her skip,

there are two major factors
to consider when dealing with

an optimized stone like this one.

Number one's the angle
and rotation of how I throw it.

Number two, the angle
at which it hits the water.

Theys others factors
too, like its size and mass,

and the condition of the water surface.

But, with a stone like this one

you can kind of take
those things for granted

on a nice day today.

Now let's talk it through as we go.

Number one, the angle at
which the stone is thrown.

See, how you throw it
directly impacts two things

that are important in
getting a stone to skip.

It creates the momentum, or
the mass in motion of the stone,

and it also affects the
second major factor,

the angle at which the
stone hits the water.

Now, you see how I got
my arm cocked and loaded?

- Yeah, looks like you're
gonna pull something, Tom.

- Yeah, that so's I can fling it side arm.

The other important part
is how I hold the stone.

Now you see how I got it wedged

between my thumb and index finger,

how I got my index
finger wrapped around it?

That's so's when I let it go,

let it roll off the tips of my fingers,

it puts the stone in a natural spin.

Now let's throw it

and I'll show you how
it skips in actuality,

thanks to mastering the physics.

(water splashes)

- [Porkchop Maw] Watch
it with them stones, boys!

- See, thanks to the principle

of the conservation of momentum,

the stone doesn't lose
momentum from the throw

when it collides with the water.

Now all that momentum's gotta go somewhere.

So if you look real close Joe,

you could have seen that when the stone

hit the water in the first skip,

it actually entered the water for a hair.

But thanks to all that
momentum I gave it with my throw,

it created a gully or a cavity in the water

that the stone then slings itself out of.

Then it's pitch angle out of the cavity

creates a lifting force
which causes the stone

to skip along and repeat
the process all over.

Now as the stone
continues this over and over,

it slowly loses its momentum
and it eventually sinks.

But if you take all them factors

I told you about in consideration,

you get a mighty whole lot of skips

before it sinks for good.

Makes sense?

The give her a try, huh, Joe?

And make sure you try for form.

- No Joe, ain't no way to master physics.

You can't outsmart a good
honest throw for distance.

- They're getting closer together

and this is the third load already.

Your pa can't do nothing about this, Becky?

- Judge Thatcher's made it pretty clear

he's got more important
pots on the stove, Irma.

- But these traps are against the law.

- He says the populists are coming

and bringing change with them.

He says one of these days soon

judges will be elected like the president

and not appointed by the
governor like they are now.

He says not everybody can
see it coming but he can.

- Is your pa running for president, Becky?

- No, he's just afraid
of offending the people

who could have the
power to take away his job.

and critters that have been there.

specific things about them,

or what time of day they passed.

He can even tell emotions in those scents.

Like whether any of them
was anxious or afraid.

Oftentimes the noise that the animals make

when they've found food.

They even use it for courting.

Other animals use it like
ways, like monkeys, frogs, bats,

even insects like
crickets and grasshoppers.

See there's this naturally
occurring thing called magnetism

and it's something you can't
see but you know it's there.

And it comes about because some materials

have unique properties that create

what a feller calls magnetic fields.

Magnets, they're made up by folks

to use magnetism to their advantage.

And these made magnets have
their very own magnetic fields

which folks can make
by giving them different,

what they call poles, north and south.

These poles, repel poles that are alike

and attract ones that ain't.

like metal, iron, steel, brass, copper.
