for a whole summer

and I didn't hear from her.
All I got was postcards.

Well...

I know how young
people are today.

Welcome to Very Scary People.

I'm Donnie Wahlberg.

He called himself,
"The Slave Master."

A seemingly unassuming
family man who had a secret
obsession for rough sex

including, bondage
and sadomasochism.

But there was an even
darker side to John Robinson.

At least six women who
became involved with
Robinson in some way,

vanished without a trace.

By the late '90s after
years of trolling for prey
through newspaper ads,

Robinson discovered
a new way to find victims.

The internet.

This is part two
of "The Slave Master".

In 1964, Robinson
met his wife Nancy,

and, they had four kids.

Ironically, he had
a reputation in the community
of being the family man.

He appeared to be
a caring loving father,

he was involved
in his kids activities,

he was involved in his church.

Average dumpy looking guy.

But, he's smart,
smooth talker, very dangerous.

He would have many
affairs with different women.

An area of interest
that he took on was
the BDSM lifestyle.

BDSM is bondage,
discipline, and

sadomasochistic
sexual relations.

He went by the
name Slave Master
on the computer,

soliciting sadomasochistic
sex over the internet.

The first part
of his career, he was,

kind of the archetypal
small time chiseler.

He faked his credentials,

got jobs he wasn't
qualified for,

and milked the companies for
various amounts of money.

And more often than not,
got away with it.

But by the eighties,
he was evolving into
something else.

John Edward
Robinson Sr. apparently knew
no bounds to his sadism.

There were five women,
one teenager and
one baby missing.

Paula Godfrey...

Lisa Stasi...

Baby Tiffany...

Catherine Clampitt...

A woman by the name of
Beverly Bonner...

and Sheila and Debbie Faith.

Part of Robinson's
MO was that he had

women sign stationary
that he could use later
to send to their relatives.

After about of decade
of instances where women met

John Robinson and
then disappeared,
it's still happening.

John Robinson was
becoming emboldened

by the fact that he was
getting away with it,
made him feel that he was...

He was never gonna get caught.

In the fall of 1999,
Robinson meets
a young woman from Michigan,

by the name
of Suzette Trouten,
who's 27 years old,

Suzette lived in Michigan,
with her mother Carol.

And she's interested
in the BDSM lifestyle,

Robinson met Suzette
through an online chatroom.

He was looking
for a submissive,

and Suzette was
looking for a master.

He enticed her to
come to Kansas City.

He said
I've got an old father,

he's not in good health,

I need you to come
out here and nurse him
and take care of him.

She was supposed
to be hired, at around
$65,000 a year.

He was going
to pay her schooling,

he was going to put her up
with a place to stay,

and her only job
was to take care
of his aging father.

So, she packs up her life,

and her two little Pekingese
dogs that she never went
anywhere without,

and moves to the
Kansas City area
to be with John Robinson.

She arrived on
Valentine's Day, 2000.

And was put up
in the Guesthouse,
in Lenexa, Kansas.

For several weeks,
he has sex with her a lot,
does the whole BDSM thing.

In at least one
of the sessions that Robinson
had with Suzette Trouten

in the hotel room, he began
filming and photographing.

And on March first,
she totally disappeared.

Suzette was a young
woman who had daily
conversations with her mom.

When her mom,
didn't start hearing
from Suzette,

she knew something was wrong.

Carolyn Trouten
was very concerned,

and she reached
out to the police here,

in the city of Overland Park.

Carolyn Trouten
actually knew
who John Robinson was,

because Suzette had
told her about him.

The Overland Park Police
Department had
these old cases,

the Godfrey case,
the Stasi case.

Some of the old timers,
I guess, recognized,

"Hey, we've had
missing person

reports in the past involving
this guy and now
we have another one."

There was this connection,
that they began putting
the pieces together,

that this guy
is a serial killer.

I mean, there's no
sequences, like that,
that often so,

literally within about
24 hours, we had
a task force together,

comprised of our office and
several police departments,

that started working
non-stop on that case.

We could not arrest him,
we had no information

no evidence of anything
at that point.

We don't have a case.

They trail him around town,

they see what his
routines are, they see
what his activities are.

We follow him, hoping
he would lead us to
some other evidence.

To try to piece together

exactly what happened
in each and everyone
of these events.

What he did, how he did it,

where kinds of things
that would allow us to

put together a
comprehensive picture
of what took place.

John Robinson lived
in a mobile home community,

that is a very
close knit community.

The residences basically sits
side by side, everybody
knows everybody.

We couldn't even drive through
that complex without
being suspicious.

So, we would sit
outside the complex,

and wait for John Robinson
to leave. There was a

kind of a hill
south of the complex,

and an officer would
setup there on a lounge chair

on some people's
property, watching so
that they can tell

when John Robinson
was leaving.

The officer gets so familiar
with the people that
he actually mowed their

backyard a couple of times,

just so it didn't
look so suspicious.

The task force was
doing as much as they
could to survey,

and build a case
against Robinson.

They would masquerade
as trash men and pick up
his trash.

They would find messages and
letters and things that had
been shredded in his trash

and they painstakingly put
all of those back together.

John Robinson was
driving all over
the metro area.

He bought this property
which was a sixteen and
a half acre track,

down in Linn county,

which is a remote rural
area about an hour of south
of Kansas City.

It's a getaway, so to speak,
and was supposedly
gonna fix it up and,

use it as a second home.

They would have
them do surveillance atop
telephone poles,

you know, binoculars
and they would watch him.

They were pretty much leaving
no stone unturned.

They weren't ready
to arrest him yet,

they had to have
an air tight case

before they could arrest him.
They knew he was slippery.

I think everybody was
on the same page. It's one
of those projects where

every person involved
knew how important
it was and they knew,

we're saving lives by

getting this guy
off of the streets.

One of the challenges was,
if he's killing, what's he
done with their bodies?

One of the more
interesting twists

in Robinson's story,
is lady called
Barbara Sandre.

I met John Robinson in 1963
in Toronto.

I was 15 and he was 19.

He was slim,
he had blonde hair,
a nice looking guy.

I think we liked each other.
I think the feelings
were mutual.

We kept in touch
on a regular basis.

They stayed pen pals
and occasionally,
he would come and visit her.

As far as I was concerned,
he was nice.

They fell out of touch
for many years and
reconnected in 1993.

At that time I was
running a translation
company in England.

John Robinson actually
told Barbara Sandre

that he was not married
and that he simply had four
children from an... adoption.

Apparently, his brother
had died in car accident and
they were the brother's kids.

And this was not true,
he was adept at
lying to everyone,

to his wife, to his victims,
to everybody.

He was a pathological liar.

We kept in
touch by telephone,

and, we wrote each other
every week.

She moved down
to Kansas City
in the late 1990's.

The reason I went was
because there was this
unfinished thing.

He said he worked
for the government.

He had a security job,

and he said, that would
be the reason why he
was away all the time.

So, because of his
important position,

I was supposed
to keep a low profile.

Initially, the apartment
that I first rented,

when I got there was
an executive let,

where you get everything.

And then they had
some duplexes that
were considerably cheaper

but you have to
bring everything,
and I mentioned it to him

and he said, "That's not
a problem, I have lots
of furniture I can give you."

And he arrived
with everything I needed.

Furniture, bedding, pillows...

Even a Crock-pot
full of rotten food.

A mattress in the bed
did have a stain on it,

but he said that was a result
of a daughter's bad period.

At the time, it wasn't
something, were you
would be thinking,

I wonder if
he killed somebody?

You know, you were happy
that you didn't have
to go buy a bed.

He brought me paintings
and he said he had
painted them and,

they had his JR
in every corner.

He asked me for money
on a few occasions and
I gave him

maybe $20,000 over
a period of time.

Because, that property
in Linn county there,

was just a field when
he first bought it,

and he said we were
gonna live there one day.

He didn't come as often
as I maybe would have
liked to have seen him.

But we talked everyday.

Sometimes more than once,

if I was misbehaving.

Going out and not
coming home till late or

having somebody over,
those were all no-no's
as far as he was concerned.

But there was no
aspect of BDSM
in our relationship.

I would have run a mile.

He never would have seen
me again from that
day forward.

Nancy said, she was his wife

and that, you know,
I shouldn't believe everything
that I was being told.

That I was one of many
women that he was
running around with,

or had run around
with over the years.

By this time, Nancy Robinson
would be married
to John Robinson,

I think, almost 40 years.

And I asked him,
what's with this Nancy person?

And he said, "Oh, Nancy, Nancy
is my, is the au pair that I
hired to take care of the kids

when they were little.

And, she's been
stalking me for years.

I thought it was
a little bit strange,

but I took it for face value.

When he said something,
you believed him.

He wasn't a wishy-washy man,

you know, there was no more
discussion about it.

I don't think the gist
of the letter from Nancy
was for me to stop seeing him.

But, she just wanted
me to understand
what kind of person he was.

You didn't dare question him.

Once on the phone he
got quite mad at me and,

I remember saying to him,

"Instead of us discussing this
on the telephone

why don't you come over here
and let's talk about it
face to face."

And he said, "I'm too mad
at you right now,

if I came there my kids would
have to visit me in jail."

When we took over the case,

one of our detectives flew up

to Michigan and talked
to Suzette's mother,

and he set him up with
a recording device for
her telephone.

One ironclad rule for
John Robinson was,

essentially to isolate,

the women from their families.

The fact that
Suzette Trouten's mother
and Suzette

talked everyday
was a key factor
in this case.

At some point, she gave
her mother his number.

They actually recorded a
conversation on the phone,

between her and John Robinson.

He said, " Well, I don't
know, she was here and she...

met some guy
and she left and...
that's all I know about it."

The guy is, quick on his feet,

in regards to coming up
with answers and lies.

I couldn't figure out how
he could keep
all his lies straight.

He had perfected this over,
almost four decades.

He was very good at it,
and that's what that
phone call reveals.

It was like he was,

kind of toying with her.

He tried to
convince Carolyn that

she had simply left
on her own and not to worry
she would be coming back.

When all of us really thought
that was not going
to be the case.

He could talk his
way out of anything.

In about, May he told me that
he was thinking of retiring.

And, maybe it was a good idea
for us to go to Canada.

His children are grown.

And he encouraged
me to go home and see
if I could find a place.

The furniture
was still sitting there,
I left everything behind.

Some people felt
that this was because

Robinson thought maybe
the police are getting close.

I don't know
if that's the case,

I mean, Robinson told
lot of women, he was going
different places with them,

and it never happened.

From March of 2000,
until June of 2000, we had,
basically had 90 days

of pretty furious
investigation into him.

The hardest decision for us,
was when he would bring
women into town.

There were a lot of
women that he didn't kill,
that he didn't kidnap.

They just had him
come in for sex.

He's a big fan of using the
various extended stay hotels.

He would bring somebody
out of town, put them up
there for a week,

he could see them everyday
and they'd have sex,
do their BDSM thing.

Fortunately, we
did have access to his phone.

We did a court ordered
wiretap.

And from some of
the conversations, we knew

when these women were coming.

The task force would
take the room next door.

And they would listen in.

We had a lot of contingency
plans for what to do if

we thought if he was
actually hurting somebody.

The police were authorized
to just break in and stop it.

But with BDSM,

that's kind of a
tall order because,

part of that's
yelling and screaming,

part of that's
voluntary infliction of pain.

We tried to really sensitive
to that stuff in terms of

not over react or screw up
the investigation while still
not letting anybody get hurt.

One of the women
that Robinson

was having a dalliance with
during this investigation was
a woman named Dicky Neufeld,

who was into
the BDSM lifestyle.

She came down here,
and Robinson put her up
in a hotel room,

where they had some sessions.

The relationship went sour,

and she had a collection
of about $700 worth of
what you would call sex toys,

and he basically
kept her property.

And she called the police
and reported that,

that, you know he
had stolen from her.

She didn't know
we were investigating.

"I'm gonna report this guy,
stole my sex toys."

This was really significant,

because this gave us
the first real problem
or cause that we had

to get a warrant to arrest
Robinson for something.

We basically
had run into a

situation where we
felt we had to move
on John Robinson.

We knew from phone records
that Barbara Sandre was
heading back to Canada,

and that John Robinson
was supposed to go with her,

and the decision was made that
we had to move in,

and stop this investigation
before it got out of control.

This was a gamble
for the prosecutor to arrest
Robinson, because,

at this point they only had
Vickie Neufeld's
missing sex toy charge,

and another charge, but the DA
acted on his instincts
and he was right.

On, June second, 2000,

we arrested Robinson
at his trailer in Olathe.

But we originally
wanted to go while
Nancy was home

and confront him
in front of his wife,

but we were late, I was there
when they walked him out.

And he said that, "You're
making quite a production
out of this."

And had a smirk on his face,
like, "You have
nothing on me."

The search of his home,
turned up amazing evidence
against him.

He had paperwork on Stasi,

he had paperwork on Godfrey.

We saw Clampitt's
name in there.

We didn't really go through
'em at the scene,

but we knew we had
a treasure trove of paper
evidence on him from there.

One of the big things
that was found

during the execution of
the search warrant
at Robinson's house

was a receipt from
the Rodeway Inn,

from back in 1985,
when Lisa Stasi disappeared.

Why he kept that, who knows.
But that was big
piece of evidence.

We discovered that Robinson
had two storage units, one was
located in Olathe, Kansas,

one was located
in Raymore, Missouri.

They searched his
Kansas storage locker,

and they found some of his
victims' birth certificates
and driving licenses

and personal papers.

This quiet pastor land,

three miles north
of La Cygne, Kansas,

is now the focus
of an investigation.

I would say probably
the first hour and
a half in the search

on the Linn county property
turned out basically nothing.

It was very extensive,

there was a pond
on the property
that they drained.

We have a very large
crime scene here,

by means of 16 and half
acres of ground.

Suspecting there
was the possibility
of human remains,

a cadaver dog was brought
in to help search the area
in a more non-intrusive way.

The dogs hit on two barrels
next to a storage shed.

The barrels were
right out in the open along
with a bunch of other junk.

It was a 85 gallon barrel
and I... I actually
laid it down.

And rolled it over
some grass
and stuff and

when we lifted it back up,
we saw a little red streak,

of red liquid going down
the side of the barrel.

We took a wrench
and undid the barrel,

and lifted the lid,
and that was our first body.

That first drum turned
out to be Suzette Trouten.

Shortly, after that
the second barrel
was brought out,

and that was
victim number two.

It was like, okay,
how far is this gonna go?

Welcome back
to Very Scary People.

While searching
John Robinson's
rural Kansas property,

detectives found two barrels.

The first contained the body
of his former BDSM partner,
Suzette Trouten.

In the second barrel,

a previously unknown
female victim.

As with everything
in this case, when
it started to unravel,

the truth was hard to believe.

When we opened the second
barrel and found that
there was a body in there,

we saw that it was decomposed
quite a bit, it had been there
for quite some time.

Those turned
out to be the remains
of Izabela Lewicka.

She was not on anybody's
radar at the time.

She was a 19 year-old from
Indiana, had actually been a
student of Purdue University.

An aspiring artist.

She had come to the
Kansas City area after
meeting Robinson online.

He tells her that he will
put her up there,
he will take care of her.

And, they will have
a sexual relationship.

Robinson had
a contract drawn up,

and Lewicka
signed the contract.

She was a slave to Robinson,
who was her master.

She basically is owned body
and soul by John Robinson.

He takes her
around Kansas City,

he introduces her as his
daughter because she is quite
a bit younger than she is.

Robinson was with Izabela
a while longer than he was
with any of the other girls.

I found the marriage
license application,

with her name on it.

And, obviously they didn't
actually really get married.

But, I think, he probably
deceived her into thinking
that they were.

And she would introduce
herself as being his wife.

After being here in the
Kansas City area for

way over a year,

she disappeared.

My mother said
that there was call for me

and he said he was from
Lenexa Police Department,

and he said,
"Do you know, John Robinson?"
and I said, "Yes."

He said, "Okay,

we have reason to think
that he's been involved
in some illegal dealings."

I went in my parents' bedroom
and turned the TV on.

A Kansas man, accused
of luring women over
the internet for sex,

is the prime suspect in
a series of brutal killings

that may date back
more than a decade.

It was hard
to believe that he would
have done anything like that.

I was never really suspicious.
I guess I'm not a
suspicious person.

We called Barbara Sandre
and asked her if we could
search her apartment,

where we knew that
there was a lot
of property there.

And, she stated that
John Robinson had given all
that stuff to her.

It appears that the furniture
and possessions that
I had at the house

belonged to Izabela Lewicka.

All the furniture had
once belonged to Izabela,

and he'd given to Barbara
after he killed her.

She was an artist.

And so her paintings
were decorating the walls

of Barbara Sandre,
unbeknownst to Barbara Sandre.

John Robinson had
written JR on 'em and passed
them off as his artwork

to impress Barbara Sandre.

The police
were wondering,

how these letters from
his victims have been sent
from all over the world

especially Europe.

The police were able
to figure out that

John Robinson had enlisted
Barbara Sandre, who
lived in Europe at the time,

to send letters
and get post marks

for his daughter, who he
said was collecting
international post marks.

He sent packets
of letters to her

and she mailed them
from these foreign locations,

to the family
of Beverly Bonner,

to Sheila and Debbie
Faith's relatives.

They were closed envelopes.

And I had to put the
stamps on it.

And they had
no return address.

I didn't think
anything weird of it.

Good afternoon everybody.

My name is Chris Koster,

I'm the Cass county

prosecuting attorney.

On Monday morning.
Raymore police and members
of Johnson county, Kansas

law enforcement agencies,
entered a storage locker
in Raymore, Missouri.

The final search
warrant was for a storage
facility in Missouri.

The locker was
associated with John
Robinson aged 56.

They didn't expect
to find anything there,

other than, maybe
background information.

And, lo and behold
they almost immediately
discovered bodies.

They found
three barrels,

and in those three barrels,
they found three other bodies,

which turned out to be

Beverly Bonner, Sheila Faith
and her daughter Debbie Faith.

They were very far
in the back,

indicating, they'd been
there a long time.

He had kitty litter
all along the floor

to absorb any liquid which
may have come out of them.

And they were each,
individually wrapped.

We now realize, this
guy is a serial killer.

The coroners and the
forensic experts believe that

the cause of death for
the five victims found
in the barrels,

was blunt forced
trauma to the head.

Although, they couldn't
say absolutely,

it appeared that
a hammer was used from

the circular trauma that
each suffered.

They were never able
to locate the murder weapon.

So nobody's
ever gonna know.

Except John Robinson.

Robinson as
the killer, is a curious
person to define.

I think Robinson killed all
these women for many reasons.

They were all different.

Because of his interest
in BDSM, it's obvious
that he likes to hurt people.

He was collecting
alimony from Beverly Bonner.

Izabela Lewicka,
she had a checking account.

After he killed her,
he emptied the
checking account.

But somewhere along
the line, I think his
sexual perversion increased,

and he realized while killing
these women, that's the
ultimate satisfaction.

I mean, what greater
satisfaction to a
sexually deviant person?

After Robinson's
arrest, he was charged in
Johnson's county, Kansas,

with capital murder,
which is punishable by death.

We tried him for the murders
of Lisa Stasi, Suzette Trouten
and Izabela Lewicka.

In trial the
prosecuting attorney talked
a lot about his early life.

The different business
that he was involved in.

And the other side of him.

The prosecution presented
a 39 minute video tape
of the sexual encounter

between John Robinson
and Suzette Trouten
in a hotel room.

John Robinson was talking
in a very cold,
flat demeanor,

issuing commands to his
submissive Suzette.

The prosecuting attorney
thought it was very important

that the jury see this video
to understand the control that
Robinson had over his victims.

The sound
of his voice on that tape,
I'll never forget,

because it was truly
terrifying to hear him speak

those commands
to Suzette Trouten.

To see this cheerful,

nice gentleman, and
realizing at the same time,

his personality contains
someone who beats women
to death with a hammer.

Surprisingly, Robinson had
taped all this over

a Willy Wonka and
the Chocolate Factory tape.

So, nothing could've
underscored more
the double life

of the doting father,

and the sexual predator
in that moment.

He was found guilty,

and he was sentenced to death.

He was such a monster that

I didn't have a problem
giving him the death penalty.

It didn't bring back
any of these women,

and if anything,
the death sentence adds

more notoriety to the person.

It adds more appeals,

it has allowed John to relive
the fantasies and the
murders over and over again.

It was time for these victims

to get some peace.

After the Kansas conviction,
he was due to go on trial
for the three murders,

in Missouri of Beverly Bonner,
and Debbie and Sheila Faith.

And ultimately they ended up
working out a plea deal,

where he plead guilty to the
murders of the two women and
the girl found in the barrels,

as well as the victims
from the 1980's.

But, he never revealed
what happened to them.

I think that is one little

kernel of control and power
that he wasn't
willing to give up.

There were three
bodies of adults that are

not accounted for,
Paula Godfrey, Lisa Stasi
and Catherine Clampitt.

And the baby that,
Lisa Stasi had, Tiffany.

Do you have
any reason to believe
the baby is alive?

We have no idea
about that baby.

Two bodies were
found on the Kansas side,

and three bodies were found
on the Missouri side.

That leaves three bodies
that are not accounted for.

Paula Godfrey, Lisa Stasi
and Catherine Clampitt.

And the baby
that Lisa Stasi had, Tiffany.

Just when you think
this case can't get
any more...

...weird.

Police received a tip

that Robinsons
older brother, Don,

had adopted a baby,
about the same time

that Lisa Stasi and
her baby Tiffany
had gone missing.

In the fall of 1984,

John's brother had told him

that he was having
trouble adopting.

And I think, he told John
how much money it costs

to actually adopt the child.

And John thinking, "Well,
that's a lot of money,
that money can be mine."

In January, he gets the baby,

and contacts his
brother and says,

"You know, you've gotta
travel here, because I've got
a baby for you."

He asked his older brother
to pay him $5,500
for this baby,

and he presented what
looked like legitimate
adoption papers.

Which was all
dummied up by John Robinson,

so we got thinking
about that and,
secured her birth records.

Including the footprints
that were taken at her birth.

Ultimately, they ended up
discovering that this

girl who'd been raised
by Robinson's brother

was Tiffany.

How much crazier
can this thing be?

We found that there
were some pictures,

thy were
Polaroids taken back

when John Robinson
actually had Tiffany
on his lap with all the kids,

and Nancy surrounding him.

Just one, big happy family,
with its little baby

that was going
to go and become
his brother's child.

They had no idea
there was anything wrong.

John Robinson told
everybody else that the mom

was destitute and
had killed herself
in a hotel room.

The day that Lisa Stasi
disappeared is the same day

that baby was brought
home to Robinson's house,

be turned over
to John Robinson's brother.

So, one would assume
that she met her demise
about that time.

Perhaps that same day.

Tiffany went to
Chicago, she would be
renamed, Heather,

and she would live
her life with that family,
uh, thereafter.

She kept out
of the public eye,
till a few years ago.

To think,
he is willing to kill

a mother to get a baby,
is chilling.

What could be more
cold-blooded than that?

I was stupefied that
this actually happened.

That he actually stole a baby
and killed its mother,

which he actually
charged his brother for,

that took the cake.

We, as a family,

have followed the events
of last week in horror
and dismay

along with each of you.

Nancy Robinson, and her
four children made a joint
family statement,

denying any knowledge of what
John Robinson had done.

As each day has passed,
these surreal events

have built into a narrative,
that is almost beyond
comprehension.

While we do not discount
the information that has and
continues to come to light,

we do not know the person,
whom we have read about
and heard about on TV.

There is always a
speculation about how much
did the wife know.

My guess is that this is one
of those marriages where
she knew about

some of his prior
criminal conduct relating to

scams and things like that.

I don't think most people
involved in this
investigation,

if anybody really thought
that she knew
about homicides.

We have never seen
any behavior that would have
led us to believe that

anything that we are
now hearing could be possible.

They were married
for over 40 years.

And, uh, she only
finally filed for divorce,

like several years
after all of this stuff broke.

His kids, loved him,
even during the course
of the investigation,

had a difficult time
believing that we
had the right person.

He still had this
veneer of this family man.

Even his own
closest family members,

they said they didn't know
he was doing all of this.

What kind of person
is John Robinson?

John Robinson,
I mean, he's... he's evil.

This guy is just evil.

He was a sadistic,
and a sociopathic monster.

He's a kind of person wouldn't
think of thing
about killing you.

To kill people,
kill disabled people,

kill innocent women,
kill vulnerable women,

collect their disability,
social security and

are there more victims

know about?

There may be more

have never been found,

which is creepier than hell.

I wouldn't worry.

I'm sure they're fine.

John Robinson
is considered the internet's
first serial killer.

But, sadly of course
he wasn't the last.

The plea deal in Missouri
gave Robinson life in prison.

And although he remains
on death row in Kansas,

his execution seems unlikely.

It would mark the first one
in state since 1965.

Either way,
Robinson will die in prison.
