four horsemen will come together at Slamberie.

The competition was fierce.

In the end, Barry Wyndham emerged victorious to become the new NWA world champion.

Long time friend Rick flair delivered the belt to crown the champion. However, his reception was a bit chilly

Since that time Wyndham has refused to comment about Rick flair later

You see Barry Wyndham, I was sitting at home the night you won the NWA title and I felt

good for you because that's something that a man achieves once in a lifetime, sometimes

never.

And I felt good for you when Rick Flair rolled in that ring to congratulate you, I felt good

for him because I know what he was feeling.

You see, you were one of the horsemen.

One of the elite that was something that will live and end for me.

champ and Baron Von Rasky won that tournament and was deemed the first ever world television

champion.

Two men, Johnny, I know you know a tremendous amount about.

We talked about the competitive juices still flowing.

We've seen some great matches.

We're anticipating another great one here, Johnny.

Well, this is really a jealousy match because they wanted to.

to get together for many years

and they wouldn't let him go.

But now they are here

and there is some professional jealousy

and there's been a little bad talk

between them lately

and this is going to be a fun match

for us.

You know that the interesting part is

of course I was a last AWA world

champion.

As we take a look at the legendary Johnny Valentine here,

ringside with us, and Dory Funk Jr., Dory Funk Jr.

lost his NWA title in 1973 to Harley Race but he defeated the man who is his

second Gene Koniske in 1969 in Tampa, Florida for that belt. As we said for

four and a half years it was a tremendous title reign for Dory Funk, Jr.

of course a member of the legendary Funk family. Nick Bonkwick on the other side

won his AWA World Heavyweight title his first one in 1975 and he defeated the

They're two of the greatest of the greats Tony right in front of your eyes

Johnny I was wondering in their prime if Nick Buckley go went up against Dory Funk Jr. in their prime both of them were champions

They were very similar in styles. Who would you have given the nod to at that time? I would have to favor funk a little bit

I've wrestled

Dory from right and Dory. This is Dory from Junior, right? I've wrestled them both and I

really respect the funks and I respect Dory from for his ability and he's got staying power

He doesn't go down when he gets hurt. He's in there fighting the last minute and I'd have to

lean towards him. Well, you talked about the stain power, Dory Funk, good go behind that time,

but Nick Buckwick turns the hammerlock right around. One of the things about Dory Funk Jr. when

he was the World Heavyweight Champion was the fact that when Dory Funk came to your part of the

country and you were, let's say, one of the top athletes and you had to go up against the World

Champion, you were in for a long fight, 60-minute time of those world title matches. A lot of

Oh that's right, I've wrestled him 90 minutes and I was unable to do the job in 90 minutes but he was a well trained wrestler, he's always in great shape and to me condition is number one.

If you can just keep going, going, going, eventually you're going to have the advantage.

And this is where he was famous for getting into cornering those uppercuts.

It's a big atmosphere, but if you can't get any of it in your lungs, it's not going to do you any good.

Look at the way Dory's got this neck of ice clamped on here.

I mean, just a master of wrestling holds and leverages.

And we're talking about legends.

You saw the legendary Bern Ganni up on the apron of the ring.

And Vern Ganya won his first AWA heavyweight title back in 1958, and his last AWA championship

reign ended in 1985.

Now think about that, one of the true legends in our sport.

And I'd say there's only one way that you become that Tony, and that is you are one

of the best of the best.

And lucky that those injuries don't creep up on you because you never know when that

ambulance is waiting for you.

You hear Ganya, there you see Gene Koniske say go for the ropes junior.

There's a rugged individual right there. Check out that mug. What a competitor.

I'd say I'd say I'd have some nicknames for Bach, Winkle, Tricky, Nicky, Slick, Nick.

I mean, he was a real, real slick competitor. Every time you thought you had him hooked,

he was out of it. He's just a terrific wrestler.

The man, Vern Ganya, defeated in 1958 for the AWA title was Eduardo Capace.

Another man that was a WA heavyweight champion was a man on the other side as well and that was Jean Kaneski

So a lot of a lot of history between all four men here. Yeah

A look at Ravishing Rick Rood, a U.S. champion as Paul Orndon, the World Television Champion at Sasaki taking out the frustrations of the entry he sustained over in Japan about a month ago.

So far the tag team work has been excellent. They know they're re-positioning quick tag between Sasaki and Dustin Rhodes.

I've been very close to for many years. A man who has up-guided my career.

A gentleman and a guy who was a legendary announcer on TBS for many years in the center of the ring.

And it's only fitting that Gordon Soli would intro the legends.

Let's go to Gordon Soli.

Ladies and gentlemen, let me add my personal welcome to all of you

attending this most auspicious occasion this evening.

may I proceed please as you know of course we are going to be tonight inducting four members to the

world championship wrestling hall of fame

I have been chosen for this honor and I am honored believe me to be the inductee but before

we begin the induction ceremony let me just say

There are many great living legends that will not be with us tonight.

Unfortunately, they have passed on.

Buddy Rogers,

Andre the Giant,

Pat O'Connor,

Gene Anderson,

Dick the Bruiser,

Wilbur Snyder,

and one more that we'll tell you about a little bit later on.

Let's observe a moment of silence for these departed great athletes.

for the very first inductee into the WCW.

Hall of Fame and we cross all organizations the Hall of Fame will be here in the CNN complex

But the very first man to be inducted. Let me introduce the incomparable Lou

Watch your monitors watch your wide screens around

Luthers dominated the wrestling world yet a championship reign of 29 years he

first won the NWA title in 1937 he held the title at one point in his career for

eight straight years he finally lost it to Whipper Billy Watson he regained the

same the title the same year to hold it for a fifth time

And in 1963, Fez became the first man in history to win the title for the sixth time by defeating

Buddy Rogers in Toronto.

I might just say once again, this man's championship career spanned 29 years and just two years

ago he was wrestling in Japan.

It's a real honor and a pleasure to induct Lou Fez to the Hall of Fame.

Our second inductee, many times the AWA Heavyweight Champion, Fern Ganya.

Fern Ganya, who today is very active with the U.S. Amateur Athletic Association.

He's already in the collegiate Hall of Fame.

He's in the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame of Minnesota native.

He attended the University of Minnesota. That career was interrupted by service in the Marine Corps.

He played the football for the University of Minnesota.

He won the Big 10 championship in wrestling four times, NCAA champion in 1948 and 49.

Also a member of the US Olympics in 1948.

He turned professional in 1950, was a 1950 junior heavyweight champion.

U.S. Heavyweight Championship in 53 to 56, and then in 1959 he won the AWA World Championship.

He and I dispute how many times he held it. He says nine, I say my record show 14.

Congratulations, Fern Garnier.

Our third inductee this evening,

And you've never seen his face. He is Mr. Wrestling number two.

Mr. Wrestling number two's career

spanned at 34 years of active competition beginning in 1956.

He has held the North American title, the Georgia Heavyweight Championship, and many other regional titles.

But interestingly, in 1976, he was invited to Columbus, Georgia, to Flames, Georgia actually to visit with the presidential candidate Jimmy Carter, his wife, and Jimmy Carter's mother, Miss Lillian.

Four weeks later, when Jimmy Carter was elected as President of the United States, Miss Lillian got ahold of Mr. Wrestling to and invited him to the inauguration.

He accepted, but then when the Secret Service came along and said that he could not go there with his mask,

he politely declined the invitation.

That's how much that mask is meant to him over the years at the professional wrestling.

I might also point out this man.

was the only wrestler to ever win the champion of champions award voted by the

fans throughout the United States. Wrestling 2, congratulations.

Lastly, as I mentioned at the very onset, there is one who is no longer with us

that certainly is going into the Hall of Fame tonight.

He will be represented here by his son

Man we're talking about is Eddie Graham Mike Graham

Eddie of course that held the North American heavyweight championship for many times

When he finally settled in Tampa, Florida he developed the philosophy of giving back to the community

He was a firm believer in amateur wrestling.

He instituted amateur wrestling in the school of the sportatorium in Tampa, along with Coach

John Heath and Cowboy Luttrel.

He also even privately subsidized a wrestling coach for Robinson High School and finally

the entire high school system put in wrestling as a major sport.

who is also the gentleman who is active in all civic affairs, big brothers, big sisters,

Red Cross, American Cancer Society, and then he and Sheriff Ed Blackburn along with Cowboy

Luttrel spearheaded the drive to develop the Florida Sheriff youth ranches, one of the most

successful youth ranches in the entire United States, modeled after Cal Farley's youth

and regret that he's not here with us tonight and we present his son Mike Graham with his plaque.

How about it? Four great legends, the first four ever to go into the WCW Hall of Fame.

And now let's turn it over to Missy Hyatt.

To say this match is rugged, brutal, vicious would be a mere understatement here.

Sum it up, man. What did you think of that match?

What an exciting evening.

When you put the most coveted prize and sport on the line, the world's heavyweight title,

it brings everybody up to a new level of performance.

Big Van Vader did everything it took and more to hold on to that title.

He didn't care what anybody thought about it, obviously.

So there's going to be a whole lot more to be settled between these two big men,

because I can see they're going to be destined.

to be battling a long time over the world's title.

And we've been talking about now for weeks the intensity.

And Davey Boy Smith's eyes, and we certainly

saw that intensity here tonight.

And he proved that he is one man that can take it to that 450

pound world heavyweight ship.

Man, what a match.

You know, Bader's calling himself the bow of the woods

and rightly so.

You're 400 plus pounds when you're wearing the strap

around your waist that says you're the best in the world,

then you can take names all you want.

He can walk the walk, talk the talk, and do whatever he wants inside the ring.

But as long as men like Sting and Davey Boy Smith, they're gonna stand up and meet.

Give him the challenge that he was, then that is gonna keep everybody searching for the top of the sport.
