The Lord gave me a charge and that's my voice

to sing and preach and I do both.

Take the strain from speaking away from him

and nobody but you can do it.

I feel like I had something down inside of me

that felt to people.

I've been singing these songs over 60 years.

This is my daughter.

I've been traveling with my daughter at the piano.

Yes indeed.

You've been telling the message song.

That's right.

You've touched thousands and they done seen Jesus

if they never would've seen him.

Somebody touched you one day and Lord have mercy

and you haven't been the same since.

That's right.

Have mercy.

No one in the world

know me better than my daughter, Bertha.

Bertha and I were known as a mother and daughter team.

And you know, she wrote a story about us

and one day she decided to read it to me.

My mother, Sister Willie Mae Ford Smith

and daughter have traveled extensively

from coast to coast, north, east, and west.

You name it, we been there.

What were we doing?

Mission work and singing to great crowds

and small congregation.

We take no limitation when it came to serving people

who really want to hear us.

We did not choose a certain crowd.

We couldn't afford to.

We worked about 1000 revivals.

We made our average 2000 programs.

And some of our great churches we worked,

when I say work and labor hard.

It's not like this present time.

We didn't have to be highly educated.

We didn't have the degrees of music,

but God was ever present.

And we had been to so many cities

where gospel singers was very unknown,

but before we left they become very involved

and interested in the songs.

How you can remember?

And singing groups and soloists.

You remember?

We had went everywhere teaching the soloists.

We got great soloists who we know

we had a hand in raising them,

but really the true facts.

No singer great or small has made it

without the aid of my mama, Sister Willie Mae Ford Smith.

It's the old time full gospel

and inspirational voice for the gateway city.

When I first started out singing gospel,

the churches didn't want it.

They don't want that coon shine stuff in here.

We don't want that ragtime singing in here,

but that didn't stop me.

I kept going because that's what God wanted.

The gospel in song.

And now everybody's doing it.

If you can't talk to God.

If you can't say something to your neighbor about God.

If you don't know God, need to start over again.

Well thank God for Professor Dorsey.

He's the only one that would dare

to make gospel music what it has become today.

He took the church music spiritual hymns

and pepped them up, put a rhythm to them

and called it gospel.

He was the first one to write and publish gospel song.

Before Mister Dorsey, they didn't call me gospel singing.

I was just a spiritual singing revival worker.

He said if you listen to me, you can go far.

And he didn't want no second best.

He's rough as pig iron.

He wanted you to be good or nothing.

And you know we didn't have the freedom

to sing gospel in our churches,

but Dorsey got us together and told us who we were.

He was the first one to organize

the gospel singers convention.

The convention came out of the people struggling

trying to get together.

And Dorsey said you get in here.

We'll help you.

And it made some of the best missionaries

that you ever wanna find.

They call me the father of gospel music.

I started at Pilgrim Baptist Church right here in Chicago.

I formed the first gospel choir and I been working with them

for my God I don't know how long.

Since I was a young fella.

We thank you Lord for last night's sleep.

I've always had struggles,

but I didn't take them to heart and let them destroy me.

I been thrown out of some of the best churches.

If they were good to ministry of men they would've helped me

and not thrown me out, but I got out on my own

and went on through the world with it

and many, many people has been helped and saved by gospel.

Bless each of us with that spiritual blessing

that we so greatly need.

The choir's a great thing to me.

I directed choir all over this world,

but yet when I get back here I feel better than anything.

And I'm not going to hold ya,

but you've got a lot of work to do.

In this man's world, the musician, the singer,

and those who can make that music count,

gonna be heaven to use by God himself.

I don't know anyone that has written songs

as heart searching as Thomas A. Dorsey.

They come out of experience in him.

That's what he said.

There's no song that could equal Precious Lord.

He wrote Precious Lord when he was discouraged

and his spirit was broken.

Anyway I was in a revival and my wife was

to become a mother.

I went away with the feeling

that she'd make a lovely, lovely mother when I came back.

I knew my people were well when I left home

and they sent for me to come to the door.

I said boy I brought them in the telegram.

I took it and read it.

I almost fell out.

It said hurry home.

Your wife just died.

I don't know how you would accept that.

I couldn't accept it at all.

A friend of mine put me in a car and took me right home.

I got home and jumped out and ran in

to see if it were really true.

And one of the girls just started crying.

Said Nettie just died.

Nettie just died.

Nettie just died and fell on the floor.

The baby was left alive but the next two days the baby died.

Now what should I do then and there?

And then they tried to tell me

that things would soon be soothing to me,

but none of it's never been soothing to me

from that day to this day but two fellas come by.

I forget their names.

They were friends of mine.

They were telling me about it

and I said I don't know what to do

and I don't know how to do and I just tried

to make my little talk to the Lord,

but it was wasted I think and I called the Lord.

Said one thing.

And one of the others said no that's not his name.

Say precious Lord.

I said that does sound good.

And got several amens on precious Lord,

and ladies and gentlemen believe or not,

I started singing right then and there.

Just lead me home wherever that is.

You can't beat it and I've done it from here to Europe,

all over Europe and some of the western countries

and they all accept it.

And I'm gonna keep on doing it, ladies and gentlemen

until the lady that I work within makes another appearance

and she's been dead for a long, long time.

So that means what?

That I intend to live on the Lord's shoulder

for many, many, many moons.

But some of the preachers they tell me

called by the thunder.

He said he doesn't really know yet.

When you're divinely called, man, you'll go.

'cause you know grandma knows.

You gonna study with God, he'll go study with you.

You know mother you gonna more,

quite a few people who didn't know about going study,

but then when they found out about it,

it made them even stronger.

If the Lord called you to preach,

Jonah was told to go to Nineveh, a wicked city.

Jonah, you go down there and preach the people down there

and tell 'em what I said.

See when you read your Bible,

you know what you're talking about.

This book tell you.

Search the scripture for in them you sink.

You have eternal life.

Keith thing on being in the belly of the whale, is he?

Well he'll think he's in the belly of the hell

if you don't wanna do what the Lord say do.

I didn't say that he had to go.

That he's got to do it or what,

but if he is and he don't do what thus say the Lord,

I'm a living witness I'll stand and look at you

and say why didn't you obey God?

Mama, not cutting you off about the whale,

but it's sweeter then but all of us

ain't gonna be sweet like you.

The devil in order to get you to cease

what you are doing for God will use 1000 tricks.

Oh yes he will.

But you have to be just as persistent as he

if you're going to survive.

But you got to tell the devil you can tear my stocking.

You can close the door the bathroom

and I'll take a wash up instead of a shower,

but I'm going on anyhow.

Mother Smith had to sing

when the children didn't have no food.

She had to sacrifice her own personal life

living for the master and you see that's a great work.

Oh yes it is.

My brothers and sisters when you like Mother Smith

can give up and surrender to the Lord

at the expense of the devil and I know the devil was busy.

Oh he closed doors in her face.

Wouldn't let her sing that bluesy stuff in the sanctuary.

Preachers turned their backs on you,

but that's what they do to you when you're a child of God.

You don't have too many friends

'cause your friends don't wanna hear that stuff.

You know how I been pushed around

and some of 'em said I was this and I was that,

but I kept going.

I have no condemnation 'cause everybody's

trying to do it now.

One of those Smith sisters.

I was one of the great blues men

that traveled the country over with Maureen

and many of the great singers and got great money for it

and I reckon when you in the band

in blues business I wrote over 300.

People would stand for hours to get to see Maureen.

I was her pianist and wrote all her music out for her.

I started to work in blues because they was something

that the people loved.

Most of the people who took that were not Christian people.

And I was doing alright for myself.

But the voice of God whispered.

Says you need to change a little.

Professor Dorsey had something

that he didn't know himself just what to do with it.

He just kept trying to find someone

that would help him to put off what was in his heart.

That was Miss Sallie Martin who sang his songs

and acted like a business manager for him.

Taught me.

Sent me many places.

He had the money and I had the singing.

And she was a great singer.

And then the folk would come in buy sheet of music

and he just he had a little white bag in the drawer

and he just dropped the dimes in there.

So I could see he wasn't keeping up with nothing.

I said you got something here,

but you just don't know what to do with it.

I addressed you to do it.

And I took over.

And he lives today on it.

Thank you.

I made it for him in 10 years.

So it was mine to travel around

and wherever I go I'd carry the music, sing the songs.

Sell the music after the service was over

and that's the way Mister Dorsey's business was built.

I don't know what she gonna sing here.

We would analyze your voices and see what you could do.

Who gave you the authority to analyze voices?

The Lord.

is where you should go where there's information,

so make a right turn.

Now here we coming to True Life.

That's True Life right there on that corner right there.

You see?

Where I first started my workout.

Why did you stop going to True Life?

Well I stopped going to True Life

'cause they didn't want women preaching.

You know I kind of agree with that.

You do?

I agree with that wholeheartedly.

Oh my God.

You been brainwashed and I like to help you.

Well the Bible brainwashed me.

Well you go and get the Bible.

You see if God could make a jackass talk,

how come he can't make a woman preach?

Maybe he can but I really have bad feelings on that.

I don't agree with that because of what,

that's not what I get out of the Bible

as far as women you know in the pulpit.

I just don't like it.

I'm not too fond of it.

And as a woman it's nice enough to cook you food,

make your beds, clean your house,

care for your children and you,

how come she can't take the word and carry it?

I'm not a chauvinist or anything like that.

I just think women ought to stay in their proper place.

Well what is a proper place?

Behind the man.

Oh dear.

God did not take me out of the man's back.

I tell you what.

Why don't you tell me about all these churches you sang at

all these years ago and everything.

I tell your pastor--

'Cause I wanna respect my grandmother.

I don't wanna make you mad.

I didn't know you had that type of feeling.

Well I mean.

I didn't.

I really didn't know.

It's no big thing.

Don't get upset.

I'm not upset.

It is a problem some time your family get on ya.

You know just a lot of jealousy in the family.

It's not a poison jealousy but jealousy's just jealousy.

They don't want you to go.

They kind of hang onto me.

Oh yeah.

You know moms I've got to leave for Houston.

I gotta go to New York.

And they want me on television in California

and they don't want me to return home

for at least a couple of weeks.

I've never been away from home for two weeks

and it's causing a lot of problems in my home.

I don't know what to do.

You know Zella it's hard being a gospel singer.

Having a career.

I have been down to Union Station getting on the train

and look at my little kids.

They'd be brought down there because they know.

Mama don't leave us.

Well I'll see you later.

I went to Springfield, Missouri in a revival.

I called home.

I talked to my husband.

He said you ought to be ashamed of yourself.

These little children are here

and you're running around the town.

What good are you doing?

I told him on the phone.

I said look I'm gon' leave you in the hands of the Lord

'cause I can't do nothing about what I'm doing now.

God has given me this work.

He said if you're not on that train Saturday morning,

I bid you just stay there 'cause I'll be after ya,

and that night I had to terrible time

in the revival meeting.

The man in there I said is going back to Jesus.

Honey he said he's gonna pat my hips

and what made me start wearing robes.

He like I like the way you built up.

I'm gon' pat your hips.

And I just kept singing to that man going back to Jesus.

I can hear my savior calling.

Repentant tears are falling.

And he looked at me like he was crazy.

He turned his head sides.

And after tears just fall down his cheeks.

I got off the train Saturday morning.

My husband was looking up in one coach for me

and the Lord made him know let her lone.

He fell in the elevator shaft.

He did?

Looking for me not paying attention to this elevator

that takes out the baggage down in the basement.

He was injured so bad he couldn't get up after he sat down

and that man stayed that way 'bout eight years.

Well he said he was through.

He wasn't gon' bother me anymore.

When you realize you're not doing it just for Zella

and get the children and support of the children,

and a husband, a family, and all that out of your mind,

and see souls out there that are drifting,

and you throwing out a lifeline.

And Zella just as true as I'm talking to you today,

God has a way for you to go and you can do

what God wants you to do but you do it

with the hand of him leading you.

♪ Sometimes I feel like I'm the least of all ♪

When the spirit anoints that voice

that's what the world don't understand about gospel singing.

It's a different singing when you're anointed to sing

and that's what this department is striving for.

Anointed singers.

I asked Doctor Dorsey was there any place

in the singers convention for the gospel soloists.

He said no we don't have a place for them.

There's too much work.

I know what you're going up against.

I said would you give me an opportunity?

He said get out there and find them.

So I did.

You got a good voice but you're throwing it away.

Kind of cup it in your mouth you know.

You can't be a pretty mouth and sing.

I'm serious about it.

Now what I'm saying to him is gonna get all of us.

You're holding tones right in here,

but you got to do something with it to make them go right.

Gospel singing must be thoroughly understood.

I heard him right on the floor there saying,

I hear choirs and chords and singing,

and nobody knows what they're saying

and that's sickening to call it gospel.

Now if you wanna go on that high class okay.

You go on up there but if you're going to sing the gospel,

you must let it be a spell you cast

on the people with your intonation.

The Barrett Sisters

was a special treat in the convention.

They was just youngsters.

They would come to me and ask me questions.

Mother Smith, why did you do that?

♪ I know the storm is passing over ♪

They've come a long way

since they been in the convention.

People would hear them singing in different programs

and different churches and they had quite a reputation

before they start recording but after they recorded,

that made it more so.

When I first heard Delois,

I felt like she was so sincere to be such a youngster.

She wasn't singing for show.

She was singing out of her belief.

and I thank the Lord that they have the essence

When we was putting together our format,

knowledgeable people in the radio business told us

that country and gospel's gonna be a 1980s explosion.

You got all the contemporary artists doing gospel music

and of course it's crossing over and it's selling.

Well I know as far as we can sound,

I would like to just do the traditional

and be able to come down the middle too

with some contemporary and you know bridge it together

where you can reach you know both sides.

If we gon' stay alive 'cause you got this young crowd

out here now you know and a lot of the older folk

that we were singing to 20 years ago,

them gone home and sat down now,

but you got to appeal to the younger crowd out here.

So I think you gotta have both of 'em.

I think you gotta come down the middle.

You gotta be able to do them both.

We have a song out now that seems

to appeal to the young people.

I noticing last night that they really like it.

So it must be something in the song,

in the beat of the song or something.

It's the beat.

The first you need to catch his ear.

Once you catch his ear, hey.

He'll stay right with it.

You got him then.

Now all of a sudden he's listening to religious music.

He didn't know that.

You can see an artist like Mama

whose been around for 60 years.

If you notice that even she and some of her music

has changed a little bit over the years

as she's come forward.

She never reached commercial success

like Rosetta Tharpe or Mahalia Jackson.

She never reached the commercial.

I still think like the right people--

She never got the commercial success.

Never heard her.

Yeah but you got to understand that my father was there

and my grandfather was a tremendous influence over,

so anything that even remotely was connected

to the world like commercialism, it was tearing down.

Her job was to preach the gospel.

She was an evangelist.

Music was the way she could do it.

Contemporary, inspiration or whatever,

that message got to be there in the days

like we're living in now.

The time like this is.

That message.

The people got to understand just what you are saying.

of the Beersheba Baptist Church on the southside of Chicago.

The Lord is in this holy temple.

and one Sunday I don't think it'll be too bad.

that our ministry can be together as a husband and wife team

more than you know you and your sister team.

You know Frank, this has been my life dream to go abroad.

and see what it's actually like,

then maybe I can really come into

what you really want me to do in your ministry.

Gospel music has become a business.

Now years ago you know it was different.

Gospel singers was evangelizing.

When I came up in gospel, we didn't do concerts.

We did revivals.

We did the singing and we would have a minister to come in

and give a sermonette and we stayed in one church one week

and we would catch tremendous crowds every night.

Years ago that was the big thing.

People being saved.

Well now we're living unfortunately,

we're living in a hit record society.

I think it's unfortunate for gospel music

'cause a lot of times we get caught up on the hit record

and miss the substance.

Now that's why I like them Baptist churches.

Sometimes you know it's a little different.

We were at a Baptist church Sunday in Saginaw, Michigan,

and you know get back on some of that old stuff

and at the cross and throw out the lifeline

and all that they know what you talking 'bout,

but when you get up there on the stage

where you're competing with a ticket price of $6, $8, $10,

then that's a performance.

Got to have a little showmanship in it.

Regretfully unfortunately when you pay $8 for a ticket,

you come to be entertained.

That's basically now.

'Cause you worship in church right?

Yeah.

Yeah you worship in church so that's not a worship service.

Well Mother had this program.

You know she was the first black

to have a gospel program at Kiel Auditorium,

and it was called Bringing the Nations Back to God.

In fact it was the first gospel music

that was ever held in the auditorium.

She felt that she could move out of the church

and come into a civic setting.

She said that her thing was to take it out in the world,

preach the gospel to everybody.

That was a form of evangelizing for her.

But it was a swinging thing

because nobody else had ever done it.

And by this time she had national recognition.

So therefore when she got ready to plan the program,

she could pull stars or people who were renowned

in the field from every place

and they would respond to her.

Like Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

You remember?

And Mahalia Jackson.

Thomas A. Dorsey.

Thomas A. Dorsey yeah.

I remember all the running around they had to do.

Yeah the old man he was running around,

putting out ply cards and he was

a so called business manager.

That was one heck of a job,

but you know dad had big ideas anyway.

But he was always supportive

of anything she did.

But I think he recognized her talent, too.

He recognized what she had to offer way more than she did

because what she did she just took it for granted

that that's the way it should be.

Dad used to even pantomime the songs that she would sing.

You remember how he used to pat.

This one would go.

Yeah, he was the biggest cheering section she had.

That's the way his feet would like

when he would be sitting there.

And he's always sit on the front.

Always sit on the front.

And he would critique and then he would be just as happy.

He had that happy expression look around

to see who was enjoying it.

But I know this place really holds a lot of memories now.

I just remember when Mother used

to get off the train this big entourage

of folk coming off the train.

It was really something to see.

Always the last one off.

What really used to fascinate me

was the way the Pullman Porters responded to mom

and daddy didn't do a lot of tipping

'cause you know there was none for poor in those days.

They just knew him but they would just bow

and scrape to her and she'd come strutting down

this place like a peacock.

They really thought she was somebody close.

We did, too.

Took a lot of it for granted,

but you know looking back hot stuff,

and you know sometimes now people talk.

Willie Mae for who?

And it's hard for us to imagine that nobody knows.

You know, the kids now, you know.

They have no idea who she is.

Oh yeah I believe and they scratch their head,

but she was Madam Willie Mae Ford Smith.

We think about where she was and that she's older now

and how much it meant to her then and Dad's gone

and all of those emotions were so significant you know

and was such a big part of our lives.

We didn't think about it at the time.

That's true but you know you think about

how happy he was every time she come in.

Every time yeah.

And it never did.

It never did affect us I think because just talking about it

and just being in this environment.

When we first started driving in here, I got sad.

I really felt sad to see that they caved too.

Think 'bout what it used to be and what it is now.

Yeah you really don't.

How much it meant to her.

Yeah if you blot out your mind,

you don't think about it as it is,

but once you come down here and put it altogether

into one package, Jesus.

I won't be through with my work

until God takes my voice.

I may have cracks in my voice

as wide as the banks of the Mississippi River,

but ole Mississippi keeps on flowing,

and I believe that that's the way it is with Doctor Dorsey.

He's been very ill with two broken hips,

but he made us all look around

and he said that old coot can do a long time

and every time you'd see him, he's jumping on that walker,

and I'm thanking the Lord for that.

And my daily prayer is for Mister Dorsey

to meet us in the next convention.

I hope he come.

I want him to come.

He lights it up like a shining star.

Do you remember when you came through Saint Louis

and we had a middle state quartet convention going on?

You and Mister Frye?

You went back to Chicago and you explained this gospel field

to Miss Bucks and Theodore Frye.

I remember well and Missus Lucille Jones was in with it.

Do you remember?

Well Lucille Jones come after that

because it wasn't nobody but Theodore Frye,

Magnolia Bucks and Mister Dorsey.

When Mister Dorsey they talked

and said I think we could have a convention.

So when he come back to the office,

he said what you think about it?

I said I think it's alright.

And then he decided we were gonna have it in Chicago in '33.

I know it was the root of it was

it sprouted from Saint Louis

for the middle state quartet convention

and I was president of it.

Mister Dorsey and Mister Frye got the idea

and went back to Chicago and organized a convention

which was the proper thing to do.

So you see I know that happened.

That happened.

The man didn't ask for the idea.

He asked 'bout when did it start.

He didn't ask for the who got the idea.

Well you know it started, don't ya?

19 and 33 in Chicago.

Pilgrim Baptist Church.

Jesse Austin was the minister.

The convention was definitely organized in Saint Louis

at Washington Tabernacle Baptist Church.

At back when you had the first meeting

that was in Chicago.

Right.

But we would gave out.

We had a few scattering remarks in Chicago.

You had officers elected.

President, secretary.

And I wonder in Saint Louis, I told him I didn't want

to be no more secretary.

And I don't get my blood pressure up about it

and it's no use arguing the point.

Let's look at it like this.

Right.

They finally got it.
