War II to rule the back streets of 1940s Japan.

And the Sicilian Mafia, deadly crime family who dominated 1920s New York.

Their methods combine brutality...

With overwhelming force, both Mafia and Yakuza will bring the weapons and

tactics that blasted them to underworld supremacy.

For this matchup between the Mafia and Yakuza, we've got some particularly

dangerous weapons.

So I think this is going to be our closest matchup yet.

What?

Scientist and karate black belt Jeff Damoline has designed specific tests to

reveal the killing force of these powerful weapons.

Barrel smoking.

ER trauma doctor, Armand Dorian, will give his medical opinions about these

vicious attacks.

This guy's disoriented, and you know what? This guy's dead.

Max Geiger will use battle simulation software created by Slytherin Studios to

track each bash, blow, and bullet that's tested.

Using this data, the computer program will simulate a fight to the death and

decide who is deadliest. So this is going to be the first time that we're

actually looking at what I would consider truly modern firearms.

To prevent a lucky bullet from snatching victory.

For the first time, our deadliest warrior showdown will be gang on gang.

Five mafia street soldiers against five Yakuza gangsters.

So the stakes are much, much higher than what we've seen previously.

The mafia's weapons will be wielded by Italian -American historian and mafia

weapons expert, Joe Ferrante.

To be in the mafia, you must be 100 % Italian.

Your bloodlines need to be laid straight back to the old country, to Italy, to

Sicily, for you to even be a made man.

Thomas Bonanno knows the mafia inside out.

In an organization where family means everything, Tommy's cousin was Joe

Bonanno, head of one of the original five families and the inspiration for

title role in the movie The Godfather.

For any mafia person in the world, they know they have a family behind them that

will always be there to protect them and to help them.

Like other immigrant groups, Sicilians sought opportunity in America and were

resolved to take it.

The people came over as immigrants. They had to protect themselves.

You had to band together.

Irish people had their own mafia. The Germans had their own mafia.

We beat them all. Nobody could beat us. By having that allegiance to each other,

nobody could take us out.

The 1920s prohibition of alcohol allowed the Sicilian mafia to solidify their

hold on New York City's crime underworld.

It made the mafia in America very strong because what they did is they gave us a

way to go make a lot of money.

And money makes the world go round.

You can't compare the Yakuza to the mafia.

If you go up to anyone in America and say, have you heard of the mafia?

They're going to say yes.

Are they deadly? Yes.

Are they warriors?

Yes. What about the Yakuza? Who?

But the experts representing the Yakuza are ready to reveal their secrets.

Majulat's black belt and combat instructor, Zero Kazama.

Zero will demonstrate the weapons that make the Yakuza one of the most feared

gangs in the world.

The mafia consists of a bunch of thugs that use weapons that anybody, skilled

unskilled, use.

Yakuza, on the other hand, use precision weapons.

David's father worked for the Yakuza, and his family has ties to the

organization dating back to the samurai era.

We're so much stronger. We think about this. We live this. We breathe this. Our

kids grow up with this. And because of that, we don't give up.

The Yakuza rose to power after Japan's fall in World War II.

With Tokyo in ruins and Japan's old government dissolved, the Yakuza armed

themselves for battle.

There's these huge stockpiles of weapons from right after the war. And when you

have the weapons, you have power.

Heavy trained in martial arts, the disciplined Yakuza grace their lineage

Japan's legendary samurai warriors.

When you're trained to fight from a very young age, you just see one adjustment

of the body and you know exactly where the attack is going to come from,

especially from an untrained opponent.

Japanese Yakuza and New York Sicilian Mafia each ruled their respective turfs.

But when they face off, which one will bury the other?

Both of these opponents are getting firearms, which are instantly lethal

depending on where they hit.

Because of that, it's really anyone's game.

So I think the plan today is to go in, run some tests, and win.

Let's go get them. The mafia team kicks off the battle with a weapon made for

maximum slaughter.

Let's go wet the party up.

The Tommy Gun.

The mafia's most legendary instrument of death.

Thompson's 1921 submachine gun fired up to 1 ,000 rounds per minute.

It's a very powerful weapon. I mean, you could spray down a whole wedding, spray

down a whole funeral.

It's going to give you a serious case of lead poisoning.

So because of the lethality of these weapons in this particular episode,

got to go off -site in order to get the safety we need to test these weapons

appropriately. At a nearby firing range, the team will find out if the Tommy gun

deserves its legendary reputation.

Great firing power.

Deadly kill.

And if you miss, you're going to shoot them again to make sure they're dead.

Reliable? Does it jam a lot? No, it doesn't jam at all. Is it an accurate

weapon? It's been 50 feet and killing and moving.

Three, two, one, fire.

The Tommy gun easily cuts down this single target with a hail of bullets.

What if there's more than one enemy?

We've got different distances. We've got a standing guy. We've got sitting guys.

I think it's going to be this man's last supper, guys. He doesn't need this.

To see how much damage his gun can do, Tommy is given a single drum holding 50

bullets. On my mark, 3, 2, 1, go!

This guy's soaked all the way through, too. This is the closest thing that I've

seen to a literal bloodbath.

I didn't think he was going to be that accurate with this. Every burst of that

Tommy gun is putting somebody on it. I think I'm going to have to write

something in where it's multiple chances for a lethal strike per turn. I mean,

it's going to have to be burst fire is what we're going to have to compensate

for.

The mafia think they've scored a major hit with their Tommy gun.

But the Yakuza have a killer machine gun of their own.

And they're out to give the Mafia a nasty surprise.

The Mafia's arsenal is simple and effective.

The Tommy Gun, Molotov Cocktail, Baseball Bat, Sword Art Shotgun, and the

Ice Pick.

But the Yakuza's arsenal is meant for shock and awe.

The British Sten, Ceramic Grenades, Nunchucks, the Walther, P -38 Pistol,

and the Sai.

When you compare these two groups, the Yakuza has a lot more education with

regards to killing. They're the scholar of killing.

And I think that's going to end up making the difference.

Mafia proved that Tommy Gunn's killing power was more than crime novel hype.

Yet the Yakuza are ready to reveal their own killing move.

The British Den.

Simple.

yet chillingly accurate submachine gun.

This is the British Den Mark II.

It's a specialized piece. This weapon was used primarily to keep control of

streets for high firepower, but very effective.

Sten unloads its 30 -bullet clip in less than two seconds.

But will it prove more accurate than the mafia's Tommy gun?

As you can see, we've got multiple targets simulating a rival Yakuza gang

over the marketplace.

If we're just going to come here, we'll probably just flank them and just go

pop, pop, pop, just three first and get out of there.

The Yakuza team has been given a single clip, holding 30 rounds to take out four

targets. Okay, on my mark.

Man, what do we got here? One.

Ten rounds, and this guy molts them in the chest, the rest of them in the face.

So what do you guys think? Any of these boys making it home?

No. None whatsoever.

Basically, it's quick and efficient. The intimidation factor of an automatic

weapon with the accuracy of pinpoint laser.

Nobody survived.

But which team has the more powerful long -range weapon?

High -speed footage also shows the stand's amazing accuracy.

I've always thought of a machine gun as, as you say, a spraying weapon, but I'm

seeing someone who's placing four or five rounds at a very high rate of speed

a target that size, which is right where it needs to be, right? Right. Just a

great example of the discipline you're talking about. You're actually taking

time to pace out your shots, but it's still enough to drop all of these guys

less than two seconds.

Because of the martial arts training, you learn to focus.

and to be able to get right on. It's a matter of self -control, focus,

breathing. This is a serious business.

I'd have to say, sir, this is excellent shooting. In a second and a half, you

wiped them out and had ammo to spare. I think this proves that precision

dominates power.

So which submachine gun gives their gang an edge?

The Sten makes a bang, but the Tommy gun makes a boom.

It's greater caliber, so it hits with more stopping power, but it also fires

faster and is capable of holding the drum clip, which can hold 100 rounds.

I'm going to have to give the edge to the Thompson submachine gun.

The Mafia gets the edge in long -range weapons for the Thompson submachine gun.

The disciplined Yakuza feel this game will ultimately be played in their

Yakuza's Ceramic Grenade.

The ceramic grenade is the equivalent of a flashbang grenade, except that it has

a more lethal bang.

The mafia would not know what hit them.

And before they can recuperate or even think straight, they'd be dead.

almost like they're unscathed. It's very, very interesting.

And you know what? This guy's dead.

Impressive. But the mafia also know how to deliver bang for the buck.

The Molotov Cocktail.

A deadly message in a bottle.

This scare tactic was often used for revenge and to make sure no witnesses

survived to tell the tale.

Gentlemen, Molotov cocktail.

Very simple and effective product.

A little love letter, basically.

Could someone survive a Molotov firestorm with a full fire crew waiting?

Jeff places temperature sensors in the test vehicle to measure the intensity.

The vehicle bursts into flames,

The face just reached 300 degrees C. The chest is at 200 C.

How's the roof? The roof is spiked.

Holy crap.

I think they got the message.

I guess what's really good to know is how quickly the heat built up in that

It's almost like the glass breaks, right? And it takes a moment for the gas

get out. I think the Molotov cocktail gives you a fraction of a second to

actually realize what's going on, get out of the car, and start shooting.

Whereas the ceramic grenade...

You've completely incapacitated at least one person here, whereas the other two

or three would have a very hard time getting out and drawing the pistol.

I'm giving the edge to the ceramic grenade.

The Yakuza gets the edge in explosives for the ceramic grenade.

So far, the Mafia and the Yakuza have very well matched.

But these gangs are just taking off the gloves.

It's a deadly fight to be that deadliest warrior.

Yakuza versus Mafia. The ultimate fight to the death between two of history's

most feared crime syndicates.

Japanese Yakuza combine deadly weapons of destruction with martial arts

How many people actually go into a fight wanting to die?

expecting to die. It's engraved in their blood and in their genes.

There's no way you can fight that.

Young men hoping to join the Yakuza were drilled to ignore the pain of battle.

Yakuza were trained not to give up anything to their enemies.

Not pain, not emotion, nothing.

Any mistakes require personal sacrifice.

If a member fails, they show their dishonor by severing one of their

off. They take a tanto or a short blade and sever a small top digit of their

pinky, and progressively more if they keep failing.

This isn't just some kind of job that you're doing. We're talking about people

that live, breathe, die this.

But the mafia also required total commitment.

The difference between the mafia and every other gang is...

They had a code of silence and they had a code of honor and respect.

They give you the code. They bring you in. You take that blood oath and you

swear to God you're not going to rat. You're not going to lie. You're not

to think of yourself above the mafia. You have to put yourself after them.

Mafia believe that family strength and group fighting tactics will help them

outmuscle any challenger.

That's why the mob generally would go in numbers, not just one guy. But when it

comes down to being a warrior, you have to do whatever you got to do to protect

what you got.

This is a great, great set of knuckles right here. That's right. They would

to be us, but they're just going to try to... Everybody wants to be us. We're

the originators. They want to be the innovators. That's exactly right.

The Sicilian Mafia's peasant background was seen in their use of everyday

objects in combat.

These newly arrived immigrants found inspiration from America's favorite

pastime, a baseball bat.

Three feet of pure slugging power.

This is my favorite weapon of all.

There's nothing better than taking a bat and just hitting the guy like this and

coming back around.

If it doesn't hurt him seriously, he'll get the picture of whatever you're

thinking about.

For the Mafia, the baseball bat was quick.

effective, and legal.

This was used for more of a misdemeanor crime.

You know, if you're stealing money, you're getting your legs broken.

And how much trauma can a baseball bat really cause?

Break the knees, break the spine, break the skull.

On this test, we're going to break the back. Let's do it. The target is the

closest thing to human flesh and bone, a 125 -pound pig.

And what I want to know is if you can smash this guy's spine in.

A sensor placed on Joe's wrist and bat will allow Jeff to measure the speed and

force of the strike.

That's pretty impressive.

Mafia have hit a home run, but the Yakuza are not even worried.

These are just to distract you while I break you with my foot.

The Yakuza bring both their body.

And a legendary martial arts weapon to the fight.

Nunchuck.

A killer combo of wood and chain.

Nunchucks in combat were primarily used as a defensive farmer's weapon. But you

could do a numerous amount of attacks, like across the head, body, above the

chin. And any one of those would probably knock somebody out pretty

concealed. It's very flexible, and you can use it for a lot of different

on the inside. It does worry me, though, that you have to take two to three,

even four swipes at it before you're sure of what your handiwork has done.

As the final battle nears, each side raises the statement.

The nunchucks are flashy. They present themselves a lot more than what trauma

they inflict.

However, the bat, it definitely does a lot of trauma. I mean, the bat breaks

bones. I gotta go with the bat.

The mafia takes the edge in close combat weapons.

But the yakuza are ready to fire back.

Who will win the ultimate street fight?

Yakuza versus mafia.

Yakuza. Versus the Mafia, two of the meanest, most conniving groups of thugs

history are about to fight it out.

The 1920s Mafia openly killed in broad daylight to protect their interests.

The problem here is that people started to get greedy.

Because if one guy fights the other guy, you got a big war. You got a huge war.

In contrast...

The Yakuza maintained a lower profile while they fought for control of a legal

racket.

Hard -hitting, easily concealed guns were critical to success on the streets.

When given the choice between precision and firepower, the mafia went for

maximum impact.

If somebody comes at me with a handgun, I'm going to take this all -off shotgun,

blow his head off, and have a nice day.

It's real simple.

The double -barreled, sword -out shotgun.

Packed a one -two punch.

Sword -out shotguns, they don't jam. And the firepower they put out is

phenomenal. All you do here is double -click, and you're gone.

It's over with.

You don't have to aim, you just shoot points. That's right, that's right.

Demolishes anything and everything in front of you.

Two triggers? Two triggers, one for each barrel.

Okay, cool. And how would you saw these barrels off? Right down the middle with

a hacksaw. Hacksaw? Hacksaw. I'm not convinced you're going to maintain the

internal ballistics.

Oh, trust me. This thing, two shots, is going to leave the body unidentifiable.

The mid -range combat, the Yakuza favored a precision weapon that could

greater distance.

The Walker P -38 pistol was lean, mean, and deadly accurate.

Walther P38's perfect, like, let's say, for a assassination attempt. It's

accurate, it's small and concealable, and that's all that really matters.

But which weapon delivers the bigger impact?

What's the Yakuza doing with the German weapon?

What, you didn't study world history?

They fought together during World War II.

It wasn't really standard issue to the Japanese, but after the war it was

accessible to the Yakuza via the black market.

Nice shooting, Peck.

Oh, I love the tightness of the group. The only thing is I see a little bit low

and left. That's because he got that gun at an antique shop.

How will the guy be feeling after this?

What's this stuff made out of? Brain and blood and skull.

What a sick mess.

The 9mm bullet flew into the eye socket.

The exit wound destroyed the skull.

Where'd you get him?

Right in the eyeball.

Nice job.

The Walther P38 pistol clearly delivers an accurate kill.

Now it's the short -off shotgun's turn.

to prove it can deliver the hit as well.

Three, two, one.

The killing power of the 12 -gauge shotgun is devastating.

What have we here?

He has no more anything where his heart should be. And you can see the peppering

here as well.

Those are all signs of close quarters. As we back this guy up, you would see

this chest wound just get larger and larger and larger.

See, this is exactly what this would do to the Yakuza.

Just annihilate him.

You can get shot five times with this gun and make it.

You get shot once with this, you're done.

In comparing the P -38 to a shotgun, the amount of trauma caused by multiple

pellets going into your chest versus one bullet, Multiple pellets win.

Shotgun, far greater killer than a P -38.

The mafia gets the edge in mid -range weapons with a 12 -gauge shotgun.

The mafia have the Yakuza on the run.

But the descendants of the samurai have deadly tricks up their sleeve.

I got the ability to disarm whatever's coming at me and bite them. Coming up, a

centuries -old killer takes on a lethal kitchen tool.

So far, the Yakuza and Mafia have pulled out their best firepower to see

who is the deadliest warrior.

These kings of the underworld were also famous for their special weapons.

We got a little shaving knife. Okay. This shaving knife can cut you from one

side.

All the way to the other. You can feel your necktie? That's right.

Knives are very good.

Swords are still very good.

But when you're talking about the actual Yakuza against Mafia, close combat, no

question, Yakuza will take them out.

Our warriors' special weapons threaten to make mincemeat of any enemy that

crosses their path.

All this is is a silent five inches of death.

The common household ice pick.

The mafia is a deadly killer.

The ice pick was used very simply.

In many cases, it's been reported that people would just go to town with this

thing and just put in 150 holes in somebody just to make a point.

Well, you know, the first thing I noticed here is the length of this. I

you put this into the brain.

and pretty much anywhere you put this in, it's reaching basic functions to

sustain life.

This would go hand -in -hand with the kiss of death. You'd go in for a hug.

Charlie, how are you today?

Boom, right into the brainstem.

At silent death, the body's going to flop, and then the body's going to die.

With a high -speed camera and a gel -encased human skull, our team is about

test the deadly killing power of this simple kitchen tool.

Enter the Sai, a farmer's gardening tool that was modified to deliver death.

These are the Japanese Sai.

They're a much more efficient weapon in combat than the Ice Pick. It's a multi

-dimensional weapon, unlike most of the Mafia's arsenal.

You can use it...

To block bladed weapons, hook it down, and attack with a blunt end, or spin

around and use the sharper end as a more lethal option.

I mean, the movements are beautiful. It's fluid action. It looks pretty, but

let's really see what it can do.

Wow, that's a good setup.

Jeff readies the test by attaching a sensor to the foam torso.

This device will measure the force delivered by the deadly sigh.

Three, two, one, go!

It's a real deal.

I wasn't joking about the point on that thing. Those things are sharp.

That's practical, though, I don't think.

You don't think that's too practical?

It seemed like a very clumsy weapon.

Yeah? Yeah. It seemed like you were struggling there a little bit pulling

in and out, too.

I'd have to disagree with you on that one. I think it's a very fluid weapon. I

think it works well with his motions, and you can use body inertia to your

advantage. How many of these do you think would be fatal?

It's a...

puncturing weapon. There's 11 puncture wounds here.

This will hit the rib and go right through.

So if you hit anywhere in the chest, you're almost guaranteed a puncture

of the lung. However, that does not mean a death strike.

In the ultimate battle, can a warrior risk using a weapon that might not

This is a battle till death.

And if you can't hit the right spot with the first strike, you may be killed.

But I got two.

And remember, these things are used to disarm people.

So I got the ability to disarm whatever's coming at me and bite them

over.

What we saw done with the ice pick earlier was absolutely savage.

It's a brutal little tool. The scythe, on the other hand, it may have been

adapted from a pitchfork -like tool, but it's all weapon now.

There's no doubt that the scythe is a better weapon.

The yacht is against the edge in special weapons for the scythe.

Out of 1 ,000 battles, the Mafia proved to be victorious 58 .6 % of the time.

That's 586 kills compared to the Yakuza's 41 .4 % of the time, 414

kills. The efficiency, simplicity, and brutality of the Mafia weaponry really

swung it in their favor over the advanced techniques of the Yakuza. The

may have won because of their firepower, but the honor, dedication, willpower,

and discipline in real life would have carried the Yakuza on top.

I feel like the mafia paid somebody off to win because I really thought that

Yakuza was going to win.
