with my more traditional methods and

getting some great results.

We sent an illustration of the tartan to
retail manufacturers who were

operational in the late 70s and early
80s. And?

The catalog company gave us a swatch
from a dress they made, which we tested

against the blue dye, and it's
definitely the same one.

Oh, catalog company. They must have made
thousands.

Actually, no. Surprisingly, only 500
dresses were made using that particular

dye. When was it produced?

August 1981.

Which means you can chop this timeline
off.

They've back -copied all their
catalogues, and we've been able to get

the dress.

etc., before applying thin

clay layers and strips to act as the
skin.

And how do you know how to build up the
features of the face?

Well, the...

The shape of the face, the nose, lips,
can be done pretty accurately, but the

rest, ears, hairline, etc., has been
pretty much guesswork up until now.

Which is presumably where genetics will
eventually come in.

Exactly. See, once they've identified
which genes correspond to which physical

characteristics, then we'll be able to
be much more accurate.

But until then, I'm always careful to
say to police that my heads are similar

too.

But it's useful to stimulate recognition
if a detective only has a bag of

decomposed remains.

How much does this cost?

About a thousand pounds.

Which, when you have a sweet F .A. to go
on, isn't bad.

How long does it take?

Only a few days.

And to my mind, worth every penny.
