But the risks these men take are great.

Bodies have been battered, necks broken, careers ended in an instant.

Yes, this is entertainment, but the hazards are real.

No matter who you are, whatever you do, please don't try this at home.

Remember how we would always go make hideouts and you'd always go find them and tear them down?

You'd say don't nail the trees. We'd nail big nails in the pine trees and ruin them.

Deep in the middle of all these little bamboo trees, there's a building and that's where we had one of our first hideouts.

We were the adventurers at the time when we were young. It was me, Jeff, and our two cousins. We had a little superhero group.

And man, we fixed it up into a little clubhouse just right in there.

And that just kind of shows how much things grow and kind of change, especially like while we've been traveling and stuff.

You know, I mean, this is pretty much all we've known all our life and it's great.

It's cool to come back here and have a place that's, you know, full of all the serenity and beauty and quiet.

I need to get home once a week to keep my sanity.

I mean, that's just how I am because emotionally I am so emotionally tied with my home here and all the life other than human around it.

Oh, there's Leda. There's Leda. Leda.

Hi.

Knowing Matt and Jeff as individuals, as well as I've got to know them, it's really neat to see the dynamic between the two of them and their contrasting styles.

Matt's definitely the more serious of the two.

He's in search of perfection.

He's definitely more focused.

Responsible.

Everything he does is for a purpose, for a goal, to achieve a certain outcome that he wants.

One of those that talked about being on the independent scene, you know, he thought, you know, we need some cool outfits to stand out.

While we're trying to make our mark, you know, that requires money.

So then he's, you know, got the idea that he'll pick up sewing.

So this is my mom's old sewing machine.

It's not one of those new up to date ones.

I mean, it's an old sewing machine.

Hopefully I'm not too rusty.

You know, the old technique was we'd go right in here and you slowly get it started.

As far as wrestling gear goes, I've made it in one way, shape, or form.

I've made trench coats, long ring jackets.

I've made a bunch of, like, special ring jackets, like if somebody would give me a design, it might take me, you know, three or four days to make something.

But I would make it.

I would slowly plot it out and plan it.

Wrestling is the whole reason that, you know, I kind of, you know, turned to this, you know, just because it helped us.

And then it, you know, just making a lot of different outfits, having cool, different looks, I mean, you know, I thought would help move us along.

And it did to a degree.

And even when Jeff started, you know, we liked the types we wore, how they were real crazy and had a bunch of designs.

You know, most people thought they were rotten.

You know, they were cool to us.

If you didn't know Jeff, I would imagine you'd probably look at him and go, wow, he's an oddball.

Because I paint my fingernails.

They're not alike at all.

I don't see any qualities in them that would even resemble them being from the same loins.

Jeff is probably one of the most unique people that I've ever met in my life.

He's just, he's one of the most carefree guys.

Well, I'm a huge fan of plants, artificial plants, because plants are just too much trouble, especially no more than I'm here.

I've always loved, like, artificial plants, like really good-looking ones.

And I went crazy with them in my living room.

And all I did was, on the roof was kind of just like a spring turning to fall scene, but that got a little wacky.

I love animals to death, and I want them, you know, just around me.

And it's a lot, it's more peaceful when they're not alive and they don't move.

You don't have to take care of them.

This is my new friend, Zeus.

Jeff is not here with us on Earth.

He never has been.

He never will be.

He wears what he wants to wear.

He dances to his own music.

He does his own thing.

And he's definitely his own person.

And that's a cool thing.

You know, he does exactly what he wants.

He has his poetry, emotional poetry.

He combines it.

That's what he calls it, his poetry.

Then he has, I can't remember the name of the sculpture.

I came up with the Illuminami.

And it's just like a mommy, but it's, you know, you just throw aluminum in there.

So after I made this one, I was like, oh, it's time to make life-size.

And then I just took a bunch of cardboard and lots of duct tape and formed this one.

The perfect description of me is weird.

Yeah, these statues are great.

I don't even know if they're fiberglass or...

But they're hollow, so...

For five minutes, I'd just like to kind of slide in at Jeff Hardy's head

and see what's going on in there.

If I was afraid, get out.

But if it's as calm and serene as I think it is,

maybe stay for a couple of days, have a little vacation.

Careful, Jeff.

Oh, my God.

Hey, how are you doing?

Being on the road is fun.

We try to make it into an adventure.

And sometimes whenever we sit back and pop a tape in a camcorder

and start being a little mischievous or whatever, it's a lot of fun.

Oh, yeah, and in case anybody didn't know, today is September 23, 1998,

which is Matt Hardy's birthday.

I'm totally concentrating on not falling, people.

Are you trying not to fall?

Totally concentrating on not falling.

Are you about to fall?

Check again.

I can never fall in here.

Oh, jeez, Matt.

Where we are right here today is in what we like to refer to as the hall.

In Cleveland, Skun Arena, this is the place where myself and Jeff

sat down the day before the pay-per-view in No Mercy in 1999

and had our first ever ladder match against Edge and Christian.

And it's very sacred territory to myself and Jeff.

Sometimes we like to come back here and just sit and breathe and take it in.

There's a lot of nostalgia that flows through this hall.

This is where the game plan was set right here.

We really had some big footsteps to fill,

considering we were coming later after Shawn Michaels and Raze Ramon.

But, you know, I think we lived up to it.

18,752 fans have jammed the Gund Arena here in Cleveland.

The ladder match was our idea.

The ladder match wasn't something that the WWF brought to Matt and Jeff Hardy

and Edge and Christian.

Edge and Christian and Matt and Jeff Hardy brought the double tag team ladder match to the WWF.

This is the first tag team ladder match in WWF history.

We had some really original stuff in mind.

We had some wacky stuff in mind.

You know, we were just wondering, can we pull this off?

Can it go right?

And the day of the show, you know, we just kept running everything through our heads

and going, wow, you know, we hope we can pull off all this stuff

because we had a lot in our bag of tricks.

What I remember hearing most was the two S's, safe and spectacular.

Shane McMahon.

Yeah, Shane McMahon, safe and spectacular.

And I kept thinking about that, god, it's kind of hard to have a ladder match

and want it to be so good and still be safe.

You know, you have to kind of take risks and whatnot.

We have to be reckless to a degree, you know, but it's just a little bit of luck

and, you know, a little bit of skill and a little bit of everything rolled into one

and hopefully we can make it through that one piece.

We've done ladder matches before, but this was our big chance to do it in front of the world,

you know, and to show them what we could do.

And so much could have went wrong, but so much went so right and oh, man, it was great.

We started fighting, wham, wham, wham.

They threw Jeff and I to the ropes at the same time.

He hit like a millisecond right before I did.

And I leaned back to hit the rope and the rope wasn't there.

And actually my head went underneath and I did the old head whipper gimmick.

Wow, what a way to start off this match.

Oh, yeah.

Bad luck right from the beginning.

First good spot.

Right.

Jeff Hardy, Edge and Christian, two sets of brothers here,

where you know these four are going to take a lot of chances

and you'll see a lot of high-risk offense.

Oh, I can't believe this.

Oh, crap.

And go to the ladder.

That ominous black ladder fell right in the face of Jeff Hardy.

One of these ladders are brought into play with the clothesline from the apron.

A lot of impact and a lot of risk in both these young teams.

Look out here.

Christian with some hang time and landed on his feet.

Jeff Hardy and I had gotten into a tug of war with the ladders.

People started going, oh, whoa, whoa.

And then when I ran him back into the corner,

that got the first big pop of the match.

And then when I ran and I drop-kicked him,

they went, whoa.

And then it just kept building from there.

And that was the thing, that first pop, is what stood out most in my mind.

Oh.

You can't do this.

Oh.

Matt Hardy trying to climb up.

Oh, no.

Now, a powerbomb from the ladder.

And now Edge has got to get to the top.

But wait a minute.

Look at the left part of your screen.

Jeff Hardy drop-kick.

A missile drop-kick off the top that took Edge off the ladder.

Sit top-bomb with Edge on the ladder.

Here comes Jeff Hardy.

Oh, the front of the ladder.

And a leg to the face by Jeff Hardy.

The Hardys are really coming at him.

Watch the ladder coming down.

Well, Hardy's using that ladder as a weapon, and that's legal.

And Jeff with the ladder.

Oh, man.

Almost using the ladder like in a clothesline.

And right in Christian's face.

Jeff Hardy.

He dropped the ladder.

For God's sakes.

A drop of the leg.

A huge law drop.

Over the top.

Over the ladder.

Have you ever?

I have never.

Absolutely not.

I have never seen any offense like this.

That's it.

Look at this.

Moonsault.

And now, oh, there's Edge.

Another ladder.

He's got another ladder.

Oh.

And now using the ladder for a headshot on Matt Hardy.

And Jeff.

Oh, man.

The top of the ladder.

Oh.

On the face.

And now Edge has got the ladder directly under the symbolic bag of money.

Look at that.

Oh, no.

Uh-oh.

What happened to that?

Cross body.

Matt Kemp down.

Oh.

And that was pretty self-explanatory.

Oh.

That's the explanation point for the push shot.

Oh, no.

Wait a minute.

At one point, I rolled back into Edge, and he splashed me down, and Jeff Hardy was in

between the ladder.

When I was up, I looked down, and I remember seeing a piece of the ladder bent, the hinge

that connects the ladder, and when I came down, boom, it knocked the wind out of me,

because I hit the ladder.

And I rolled off, and I remember looking at Jeff, and I said, we need the spare.

The ladder's broken.

And he said, no, I'll fix it.

And then, sure enough, Jeff bent the thing back.

I don't know how he did it, but he did it.

We actually smashed Jeff Hardy with it 10 times.

That's when it really got bent.

By the time we got to the seventh or eighth, I mean, we really had to crank it down on

him.

And that's when he had to jimmy it back into place.

Edge and Jeff Hardy now, about halfway, oh, my God.

Downward spiral from the ladder.

How in God's name can a human being even move after that?

Oh, no.

It's unbelievable.

They've all absorbed so much punishment, JR.

I'm amazed.

Oh, no.

Look out, look out.

No way.

On the ladder.

Oh, God, a net breaker.

Unbelievable net breaker.

There's no amount of money in the world for putting your bodies through this.

It's really weird.

One of the things I remember most vividly, Edge took the ladder and went to, like, hit

me in the head with it.

And it doesn't look that bad on tape.

And that was one of those things.

I remember it hitting my ear, and it went numb, and I thought my ear had been cut off.

As a matter of fact, if you can watch the tape, you see me grabbing my ear, and I'm

checking just to make sure it's there.

And it busted, and it was bleeding a little bit.

But that really knocked me for a loop.

That was probably the worst thing.

I remember that more than anything else just because it hurt so bad.

What are they going to do here?

I haven't seen it all, but I don't think so.

Edge trying to get underneath Christian there.

No, wait a minute.

I remember everything, but my favorite was the seesaw spot.

And right before I was fixing to jump, I was so thrilled to hear the fans' reaction to

that.

And when I landed on the end of the ladder, man, that hurt me the most in the match, believe

it or not.

My tailbone was, like, really bruised or something.

But, yeah, that was my favorite.

Hopefully you have seen it all here tonight in this Tag Team Ladder match.

Oh, man.

This just started.

Look out!

Look out!

Oh!

Edge!

Oh, four-minute back down.

Hung up on the ropes.

Crashed into the canvas.

I don't think any of them are going to be getting up either, JR.

They're still setting those ladders up again.

We're setting the ladders up to climb again.

And you can see me, it's all I can do to climb up at this point, and I'm yelling.

Every time I grab the line, I go, ah!

Ah!

I looked down, what the hell is he doing?

Our ladder was set up totally away from the belt.

You know, we were so used to setting up ladders, we didn't care.

We were just setting it up again, you know, so.

I looked up, went to the bag, and all of a sudden hit me with a whacker across the chest.

Edge shoved me off the ladder.

I went back, sprung off the ropes, and fell into their ladder.

So as ours fell, he stepped off onto the ladder where I had been previously.

In perfect time.

He nailed Edge.

Edge off that ladder.

Climbed up, grabbed the money, and then.

And it wouldn't come out at first, so what better way to get the bag out

than just let all your weight go and fall off the ladder.

He jerked it and sacrificed his body.

Totally get the win knocked out of you.

He can't get, he got it!

Oh!

God!

Marty!

They've won the match!

That really turned the corner for us.

From where we started in WWF, October of 98,

it's unreal how far we came a year later when that match took place.

You know, and that really gave us a lot of steam.

I mean, we proved to a lot of people that, you know, we were real.

Matt and Jeff Hardy, we're serious and, you know, we're around here to stay.

I've seen during a match and immediately following a match standing ovations,

but I don't think I can ever recall 24 hours later

these guys getting a standing ovation.

I thought it was a great testament to their ability, to their desire,

and certainly the fans should pat themselves on the back

for recognizing the effort that these men put forth for them to entertain them,

and boy, they did a hell of a job of it.

You know, I started watching wrestling,

and Matt, same time, right around WrestleMania IV.

There was a tournament for the vacant WWF title.

I remember Jeff and I both said, you know, who do you think is going to win that?

You know, we were guessing there were different people in the tournament,

and my pick was Macho Man Randy Savage.

After I started watching full-time, and I just saw it,

I just thought it was the coolest thing ever, and it was always a dream as of then.

We're not getting that ring with you tonight, how old is you?

I'm going to come after you 110%.

Our first mainstream characters, like the ones that we would put the most time into,

I was Wolverine.

My main character was High Voltage.

Now what are you going to do, Wolverine, when 10,000 watts blow?

Can you survive? I don't think so!

This was the first ever overcoat I made.

This was my old High Voltage ring jacket.

I had a character named White Cheetah.

I was Gladiator.

The Grim Reaper.

Will of the Wisp.

Rip Curl.

Macho Man.

Mysterio.

Galaxian.

Evil Knavel.

Me and Jimmy Jack Tompkins.

Me and Jimmy Jack Tompkins are named.

Tonight, I'm going to bust that big boy and destroy him, whatever his name is.

When you look at Matt and Jeff, they want to do this since they were kids,

and so they'd wrestle around the backyard, which we can't condone,

but you're always going to have kids wrestling around playing Power Rangers,

and they did that, and they kept doing it, and kept doing it, and kept doing it.

We just did Independence, and we would drive four or five, six hours on the weekends,

make 20 bucks.

We never made any money from wrestling.

Everything we did was for experience and exposure.

I didn't go to either one of my proms because I wrestled on those nights,

because we would jump on any opportunity we had,

and there were so many times we drove to Philadelphia, to New York,

all up and down the East Coast for nothing.

You know, we would come home hurt and beat up,

and our dad would say, did you make any money this weekend?

We did.

Oh.

I mean, but we were on a good show.

There were 400 people there, and we met a few good names.

And he'd say, well, you need to quit that wrestling bull****.

You know, get a real job where you're going to have a little insurance,

and you're going to have some stability and some benefits.

I was concerned about them, you know.

What do you think about the wrestling business as a whole now?

I watch it all the time.

I tape all the shows so the boys will have them when they get home.

There you have it, the old contracts.

This is how it went.

Whenever this thing flew in, we opened it up and we said, okay,

start looking through it.

Okay, yeah, where's it at?

From the back.

Oh, where do we sign?

Right here?

Back in the mail and out.

Hey, no use in reading.

This is what you work your whole life for.

This is your dream.

Sign it.

Okay.

You know, I remember how excited that Matt and Jeff were just to be

able to get a contract from the World Wrestling Federation.

That was a really big thing to them.

I saw a lot of desire.

I saw two young guys that really loved the business and that would do

anything to be in it, and they had heart.

That was probably the one thing, if you ask me one thing that I saw,

they had heart.

The Hardys came in, they worked wherever they could, whenever they could.

And that's one thing that I always respected about these two young kids

is that they would go anywhere and do anything just to be able to get

inside that ring and compete and keep getting better.

360 in mid-air.

And every time they would come back from the ring, they were like sponges.

What did we do good?

What did we do wrong?

How can we be better?

And can we please come back next time?

The challenge for them at the time was you had the big companies,

and then you had a lot of smaller independent companies working all

over the country.

And the challenge for them was to get into one of the bigger companies

where they could find regular work.

Because they had worked for us in and out for several years,

and they had come to TV's and been appearing on TV's and doing a lot of

different things and doing house shows, kind of like as part-timers almost.

And when the day came, they finally say, gentlemen, we want you to be

part of the family.

Here is an official World Wrestling Federation contract.

They were literally looking for a pin and wanting to sign it right then

and there.

Jeff and I sat back there and he said, well, what are we thinking about

with you guys?

What we want to do is offer you guys a three-year contract.

It's a developmental deal and we'll pay you X amount of dollars per week

and X amount of dollars for TV, blah, blah, blah, the same old thing.

And I remember inside, you know, I was trying to like be professional and

like, you know, it's no big deal, but inside I was just exploding.

It was like the 4th of July.

It's on my stomach.

You know, fireworks were going off.

And I just wanted to get up and scream.

Whoo!

Yeah!

Oh, God!

Yes!

You know, I just wanted to go, you know, crazy, you know, but I just

tried to remain professional.

I was going, yeah, you know, we'd be interested in that.

I mean, it was almost like a teary feeling, man, because we had

went so long starving and we had came so close to giving up at times

because it got so hard at times.

That's just a culmination of everything, you know, that we've worked for.

And, you know, it's just a dream come true.

And so, so, so, so few people, you know, that worked their whole life to try

and get a job in the WWF, you know, get that opportunity where they're

offered a contract.

And, you know, that was our moment.

And I remember getting out of there and walking to the ring and the rest

of the crew that was listening.

So, what'd they talk to you about?

I said, well, they offered us a contract.

And they were going, oh, man, well, congratulations, you know.

It was exciting.

It was really exciting.

It was definitely one of the best days of my life.

You know, they took it upon themselves to get as far as they could on their

own.

Then they got their shot and they were able to chase their dreams down.

And God bless them for it.

There's a lot of different stories here in the World Wrestling Federation,

how guys made it here.

And there's a lot of very cool stories.

When you look at Matt and Jeff, they trained themselves and got to the

point where they were good enough to get here and start cutting their teeth

and learning here.

You could definitely write a movie and make a movie on what they've done

with their lives.

Dare to Dream would be a good title for it.

It would be good.

If you believe in yourself, if you really think you can do something.

And I think Matt said once, to achieve you have to believe.

And I think that that's the case.

And I think that they really both felt that.

And look at where they are today.

You know, the first time we came in and wrestled after we were under

contract, we got an upset win on Kanta, you know, which was real cool.

And then like the next night we got a DQ win on too much.

And then we like lost like 50 matches straight.

But hey, that was good.

We were getting a steady paycheck and we were getting an opportunity.

They put us in an angle with Michael Hayes and we got in there.

We kind of had a makeover.

But people had seen us long enough where they identified with us and they

knew how hard we were, you know, really working to move up to the next level

and we were busting our ass to get there.

And people accepted and they bought into it.

And like six or seven weeks later we were the WF Tag Team Champions.

Could that be all?

The leg is hooked.

Yes.

We've got new Tag Champions.

Which was real cool.

And that was another one of those points where I said, well, after we

start wrestling, I said all I want to do is become the WF Tag Team Champions

one time.

I want to be happy.

Of course, as time goes on, you know, that's way behind me now.

There's a lot more goals ahead of us in the future.

We went from there.

We carried on through.

We finally got rid of Michael Hayes.

We joined Gangrel, became the new Brood.

After the old Brood, Edge and Christian split away from them.

Edge, Christian, Matt and Jeff Hardy were really young guys.

We'd never really done anything major.

And we met in the Terry Invitational Tournament, which was the best of

five series.

And we went to the final match at No Mercy in Cleveland, Ohio at the

Gun Arena and a ladder match.

And that's where we went from being WF wrestlers to WF superstars.

Mick Foley said something like, you guys have cemented your spot.

He told us that.

Nothing but inspiring.

Sometimes it doesn't matter how good somebody is or for how long they've

sacrificed.

They need that one match that kind of defines them.

And the Hardy boys, I mean, within the dressing room, everybody knew what

they could do.

But until they had that ladder match, I don't think the fans knew exactly

what they could do.

That's the kind of thing that put a real solid, indelible stamp on their

reputations.

And they just proceeded to exceed that reputation every time it's on the

line.

This is Jeff as a baby.

And this is a little high school picture of Jeff.

This is the room that I grew up in.

And as you can see, there's just memories everywhere.

I was one of the kids who said, well, I want to be a pro baseball player.

That was one of the first things I wanted to do.

I was so into baseball, I think that was my first idea of a dream.

Our dad was actually our baseball coach from the time Jeff and I were six

years old.

We played baseball all the way up through high school.

This is obviously a family portrait of myself, Jeff, my mom and my dad.

For a while she was having really bad headaches.

She ended up going and she was diagnosed with cancer and she had a brain

tumor.

She was really athletic because I remember stories of just bowling and

softball and trophies she had.

I remember being in the hospital.

We were there the moment she died and we just all broke into tears.

Our dad told us, he said, our mom's gone.

He said, we've got to pick up them, we've got to go on and we've got to

make it.

She was a fine woman.

It went hard there for a while, but we grew out of it.

I told the boys we just had to go on because that's what she wants to do.

Having two kids and raising them yourself, I mean, whoa, and still

working at the same time.

I mean, gee whiz, he is, I mean, my overall hero.

The discipline that they were raised with, too, I believe helped them

a lot.

Everyone always jokes that they're always scared to go over to their

house.

They say, oh, I don't want your dad to yell at us or whatever, but I

think that it really helped them stay disciplined, stay focused to get

where they are now.

I feel very comfortable with it.

I just feel that it's a very private situation.

After a big match like that, sometimes Jeff needs a little bit of fixing.

We just went out and we accomplished what so many people, as we did as young kids, dream

of doing.

Wrestling and WrestleMania.

Went out and it was great.

Center stage was awesome for me.

I'm sure if you ask any of the six members, they have the ultimate respect for each other.

Because everybody out there, it's a group effort.

We went out there and we did a lot of dangerous stuff and we did a lot of stuff that's never

been done before.

You know, we all came back unscathed more or less.

We'll give luck a little bit of credibility with everything going so smoothly out there.

I am.

I'm a huge believer in luck.

I just like to say that.

Oh.

I don't know why.

I'm sure if you ask any of the six guys too, Jeff may very well be the craziest individual

in the wrestling business.

Because he just wants to do anything.

He doesn't think about the consequences.

Well, it's like you climb up the ladder and then you don't see everybody until you get

over like that ring height.

Then you kind of see everybody and naturally all that adrenaline's flowing through your

body.

So you get all pumped up.

And I was worried that the ladder was going to, once I tried to jump off it, it was going

to come out from underneath me or something.

So I kind of just tried to fall off it.

What a feeling.

It's amazing that that's only 12 foot and it looks 50 and it feels like it's 50.

And it's scary up there.

And I didn't think I broke the table at first.

I thought I just smashed my heels in my rear end into the floor.

But I looked back and said, oh, I did break it.

Jeff definitely has that feeling, you know, don't worry about tomorrow, I'm just going

to do this right now.

And once I land, I'll worry about how I feel after that.

Which is really admirable, but I can't say that, you know, just anyone would go with

that.

Jeff will still do things that catch me off guard.

But before I could even get, I can't believe he did that out of my mouth.

I can believe that he just did that, but it doesn't make it any less amazing.

If I'm out there, it's not like I can do anything about it, but I feel that much closer

in case something were to happen.

I think the three of us have such a great chemistry together.

I can feel the most energy coming out of that.

Being able to interact with the two of them, just walking down the ramp.

And I think the crowd responds to us as the total package, the three of us together the

best as well.

It's a good feeling.

I think what the Hardy Boys do works just because, you know, they're them.

Take them or leave them.

And, you know, fortunate for them, the crowd's just taken to them.

And I believe that they're much more attainable type people and in still a, you know, unattainable

way.

You know, we look like the people that they're watching the show with on Monday nights in

their living room.

You could kind of describe it as the start of like a concert or something, because you

know, you can hear all the girls start to scream when you hear their music start and

they come out and do a little crazy thing at the top of the stage.

And it's a lot of excitement, high energy.

The crowd gets with them as soon as they hear their music.

And I mean, they know what to expect.

They know that it's going to be an exciting, exciting match.

The one thing about the Hardy's entrance is it's kind of frenetic.

And it's energy and it's excitement.

When they come out, you know, you have to get up and it excites you.

And everything that they do, they bring the fans in and they make you feel what they're

feeling.

People can really identify with them.

They get really excited because they know when the Hardys are in the ring, they're going

to see something special.

They're going to see some high risk moves.

They're going to see some really fast paced action.

And most of all, they're going to be entertained.

And that's what the people pay their money for and the Hardy's entertain the people.

It gets the heart pounding, the blood pumping, the doom, doom, doom, doom, doom.

I always do an impersonation of their music and we usually get together at an outback

after the show and at some points we'll do their music.

But just the way the drums kick in and it's very cool.

I used to like their old music before they had that music.

And if you can play that in there, it's pretty cool.

It is when they were with Michael Hayes.

That was really cool music too.

And then they switched to this other one.

I didn't like it as much at first.

And then little by little it really started to grow on me to the point now where I'm bouncing

along with it and drumming along with it when they come out.

To the point where I've caught myself in the ring as they're coming down the aisle doing

it.

I go, okay, camera might be on.

And here come the home counters.

Oh boy.

The Hardy boys.

Oh, they're fired up, JR.

Oh, what a shot.

I'm going to make a bold prediction here, I'm going to pick the Hardys and a Devon Dudley

on Jeff Hardy.

I love it.

I mean, you name it, Art.

Just anything you ask him to do, he can just pick it up.

His aptitude to do stuff is incredible.

And when it comes to doing something athletically, I mean, just anything,

he's, hey, Jeff, do this, and he can do it just like he's been doing it,

you know, for two years already.

I mean, he's just really, really talented as far as picking up stuff real quick

and having a great aptitude to do stuff.

Having a motocross track in my front yard is something that I've wanted for a long time.

Really as far back as I can remember, Jeff's always, you know,

loved to do kind of crazy and daring things and motorcycles

have definitely been one of them.

I remember my brother always had a poster in his room,

and it was a picture, it was like a poster of a dirt bike,

and I would always look at it and say, man, I need to do that.

It took me so long to talk to my dad and letting me, you know, have one,

and actually, you know, him shutting off the bugs for it.

We used to film every race, you know, 40 lights taking off,

and you know, me being right next to last.

It was probably my brother filming most of them.

Is that him? I don't know, is that him?

No, I can't see nothing, the dust.

Let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Jeff just has that no fear mentality.

Fear, fear, fear itself.

What's Jeff Hardy going to do here? What is Jeff Hardy thinking?

Jeff Hardy has no regard for his body.

This is going to be obviously very unorthodox, very unpredictable,

and unfortunately very, very dangerous.

I'm scared of a lot of stuff, but if there weren't any fear in it,

you know, it would be that big of a payoff.

That fear is, I guess, the payoff in it after it's over.

Jeff is completely and utterly insane.

I've been in some bad wrecks. I hurt my neck real bad one time.

I broke my shoulder and my collarbone at the same time.

I've got to be careful now because I can't be hurting myself like, you know,

I used to, being that I'm a WWF superstar now.

Oh, and he goes down.

It's a dangerous jump, and as soon as you land,

there's another jump down the bottom of that hill.

I just kind of went into it long, and it just threw my dirt bike kind of

nosedive style into the ground, and I was able to just jump over the

handlebars and do the old ninja roll out of it.

You're always going to have that risk factor of a wreck and like a serious injury,

maybe death, you know, I mean, it's always there until it's the same thing

that, you know, happened in the ring at any moment.

All right, I'm sorry. It's my fault. It's all me.

The motocross track was kind of getting boring, you know.

I've seen it a lot, so I've seen a volcano in my head and just envisioned that,

and I went ahead and built a little bitty volcano.

Jeff's just really unique, and he's just got all these crazy and wacky

and original ideas flowing all through his head,

and when he gets something going, he'll do it.

And, you know, one day he said, well, how about if I, you know,

build a big mound of dirt up and put a barrel in it and put some gas

or gunpowder or whatever and build a volcano.

And lo and behold, he had a volcano the next day.

This is the first time I've ever jumped the volcano.

When I was trying to make the lava, my dad tried to help,

but the fire kind of was faster than my dad,

and it almost got to him, and my dad almost got caught

right in the middle of it and became flame man himself.

I don't think I felt the heat just because it was kind of a hot night,

and there was just so much going through my mind,

I didn't have time to think about the heat of the flames.

Jumping over the volcano was totally original,

and it was totally different than a regular double.

It's an awesome feeling to jump above fire.

It's just that team extreme attitude, I guess.

We have that reputation to uphold,

and this does nothing but add to that,

and it's just that living on the edge atmosphere that I carry.

And now I can say I have a volcano in my front yard,

and I've jumped the volcano in my front yard.

Oh, yeah. Powered up.

Philadelphia's a very tough crowd, but this match was great.

I agree with you. I mean, I think it was great.

Christian got a foot full of heel.

The heel of Jeff's foot hit him right in the mouth.

People by now know that, you know, Jeff's utterly insane.

And now I'm kind of stuck,

and I try to hang on a little bit,

so I just lift and slip tap.

The original name of the move was the JLT from Michael Hayes.

because you can put it on an opponent just like that.

where I'm trying to escape the cage.

I make a little bit of a comeback on both of them,

and they hook me, and they actually suplex me off the top of the cage.

Eee. And that was one of those where you hit, and you go,

ugh, I hope I'm okay.

But I was. I'm not as tough as Jeff is.

I don't know. I can't say that.

He can honestly say that. I think he's pretty tough.

He's right off the top of the cage.

And now Matt Hardy leads first into the steam.

And here they go going for the concerto,

but nobody home.

And it's got a really good reaction, I remember.

I mean, you would hear just thousands of people

just chanting Hardy right now.

Oh, and here comes Jeff with the ladder.

He just threw the ladder right off of Christian.

That was awesome.

That was great.

Now Edge and I are on the top rope.

and that's going to be his means to get to the cage.

with his cockiness putting the key down his pants.

And what's really funny about it,

that's great on both accounts,

because Edge can't get Jeff.

And now he can't hit him through the cage

because Jeff's on the ladder.

I mean, you can just look at the crowd right there

and tell that they were waiting for this.

Dude, I've got crazy goosebumps right now.

I remember this was actually real emotional.

It was like everything we were doing was like the hugs were real.

Everything was so super emotional.

And see, that was the culmination of our

months and months of chasing the attacking piles

and finally winning them.

Ooh, double concerto.

Edge said, you know,

I hope I don't get afraid

to fall back or get stuck or whatever.

Jeff made a joke earlier.

He said, oh, when we hit you with a double concerto

don't worry, you're going to fall back

because when you're unconscious you can't control it.

I'll clap for that one.

I'll clap for those two guys.

I would say that the most vivid memory I have

of watching them compete has been

during the cage match.

When they gave the concerto to Edge

off the top of the cage and they came crawling over the cage

jumped down and just hugged each other.

It was like such a genuine feeling.

You know they were so excited to get those belts

by just seeing them embrace like that

and just getting the tag titles.

It was a good feeling for me as well.

We wrestled Edge and Christian at Unforgiven

2000 in the cage match and won the tag team titles.

After we were beat up

really severely we wrestled them in the ladder match

on the first ever episode of Raw

on TNN.

The stipulation was if they could not

beat us in the ladder match they got no more shots in the titles.

So we beat them in the ladder match

so they dressed up as the conquistadors

trying to earn another tag team title shot against us.

Oh JR these guys are great

they love conquistadors.

You mean Edge and Christian they are a great team.

That was fun.

That was fun and when Christian

and I were the conquistadors we'd try and

do little Mexican moves

and walk differently. So then Matt and Jeff

came out that night and they tried to walk

the way we were walking and it just

looked hilarious because we always call Matt's legs

Jimmy Legs and if you watch him trying to walk down

like conquistadors all full leg

and everything it was great and Jeff

was the Jimmy Legs.

We tried our best to do

similar to them. I think

we did a great job of not letting them know

that we were the Hardy Boys because when we took off our masks

people were really surprised.

This was actually

cool how they were going to show a little package here

but the show was running a little heavy

just for all those people who like history

and like a little inside trivia

they just showed the tables ladders and

chairs being constructed. Let's watch

the match.

Wow

look at the crowd

I remember this was awesome.

Everybody in the back they said

whenever you guys come out take your time going down

because there was almost 70,000

people there. This was in Houston

Astrodome.

Being such a huge

building too you don't really

to where Matt said he heard it

I was going to say I felt it. If they're not

fired up on the entrance man it kind of

kills me right away. They got to get behind

me to really have me fired up.

This place was so huge just like the Sky

Dome in Toronto. You don't hear it

or feel it as much. At least I don't

feel it as much because it's so big and there's so much

air

above them and in between you know the

bleachers. Great ovation from Matt

and Jeff Hardy. How high

will the bar be raised tonight?

The Edge and Christian the Dudley boys and we've done so

much for each other through our careers too. It was

great that we were performing with those two other teams on

this level on this platform.

It was so hard considering we've done so much in the past

to go out and try and maintain

the same level of

entertainment that we have in the past and I think we were

able to do it. The belts are up for grabs

right now and the Hardy boys with the

early, early advantage right now.

This was the first one really where all the crowd came up

because Jeff and I have both ladders and you can see

as we start to climb all the bodies

start to rise and grow.

There's nothing like that. That's just

stuff that we live for.

The Hardys with the

tendum offense off the ladders.

You want to hit that?

Yeah because all that broke that table was my hand.

You'll see him scoop me for a powerbomb and watch

all my hand

because he didn't

throw me far enough. It was supposed to be

back to the belly, back to the chest.

It kind of knocked me a little silly. It didn't knock me totally

unconscious but

it knocked me a little silly.

This is a good one we got to see. Nobody even knows this.

This was the worst injury I sustained in

the TLC2 match right here.

Bubba Ray Dudley took this ladder

and we almost need volume. When he hits me in the head

right here, right here. Wham!

That led to twelve staples.

I'm getting some volume on that one.

I'm fed up. I've had enough.

Why?

That's such a little

thing. Nobody noticed that.

Coming up here is my favorite sequence in

the Magic. Oh man! They're going

for the Dudleyville device!

This is living for the moment.

That's living for the moment, isn't it?

They got it right here.

If you don't have it right here, inside,

they love what they do.

Besides the fame, besides all the money,

if that wasn't here, they would still

put 100% into what they do.

There's a lot of people who don't think

that the Hardys are going to last with their

hard-flying style. I totally disagree.

They're so young, and they have

so much wrestling ability,

and they've got whole wrestling futures ahead of them.

I don't think there's ever been a tag team, it's just been a

set tag team that's had the single success

that Jeff and I have.

Sometime down the line, it's inevitable, you know what I mean, they're both

tremendous talents. They may be surprised

to see them go their separate ways

sometime down the line, and that might be a little hard to swallow

for a lot of Hardy Boys fans,

but you know, you've got to change and

roll with the times.

To get a chance to live a dream is one thing.

To succeed at doing that is another.

Nine times out of ten,

if someone does that,

it changes them. But Matt and Jeff

are still the same kids that when they came

here to the WWF, they were just so happy

to be in the locker room with

the WWF Superstars, and

they still have that same feeling,

they still have that same drive to

entertain the people above

and beyond the call of duty. To see everything

that they put into the business

to be where they are today,

it makes you feel good that you could ever be a part of that,

because they lost their

mother at a young age, and their father

was all they had, and

their father just discouraged

them from getting into

the wrestling business. To see

the glow of their father,

he watches them today, and to know how

proud he is of his sons,

that they succeeded at something that they

truly wanted to do. They love

this business, and their love,

and their determination made them

successes. I want to be respected,

first and foremost. I would like to be

respected by people saying that

Matt Hardy was good

and fair, and when Matt Hardy went out, he wasn't

just thinking about Matt Hardy, and I would

love to one day be in a leadership

type position, like the Triple H's

of the locker room, and The Undertaker, and the Stone Cold

Steve Olsen's, and I want to be able to pass back

all the information, and

everything that's been given to me, give it

back, and I also just want people to remember

that I was a good person.

I have totally fulfilled

a dream.

That means so much to me, after so many

conversations of

what are we going to do now? Are we going to

stick this out? Man, are we ever going to make it?

God, my shoulder hurts.

Man, is this worth it?

After all of that,

to be able to

say that I'm a World Wrestling Federation superstar,

it's so awesome,

and I'm thankful for what has happened

with the Hardy Boys, and

I totally think we will

continue to

exist and inspire.
