funneled millions to his self -help

People gave him money, like piles and
piles, to do what he wanted with.

But as former insiders now reveal, he
uses it to fuel his most dangerous

appetites. For Keith Raniere, this was
about sex, money, and power.

A multi -million dollar financial
machine.

The members were brainwashed, kept on
starvation diets.

That funds unspeakable crimes.

And branded them with his initials.

It's party time in Puerto Vallarta.

High season.

Spring break.

We're just off the beach in a luxury
villa.

The party's over.

Mexican police burst through the door.

They hold a woman at gunpoint in the
bedroom.

But it's a man that they're looking for.

And he's hiding in the closet.

Keith Allen Ranieri is a world -renowned
guru, a sort of life coach with an

edge. I'm very devilish, and I think I'm
probably the worst coach in the world

because I'm just a demon.

He's the leader of an organization with
a strange name.

and an even stranger spelling, Nexium,
offering self -improvement courses based

on a philosophy called rational inquiry,
patent pending, that Ranieri sells on

YouTube. I'm curious, why do you call
rational inquiry a technology?

You could call it a methodology, too.
But a technology, if you look

at the definition of the word, I think
technology fits.

I was there from the beginning of the
program in 1998.

Businesswoman Angela Ucci swears by the
training.

Rational inquiry was a systematic
approach to looking at

your issues in a rational way that would
have you shine light on

where you developed them yourself and
why they might not be rational.

Don't quite understand it? Keith Raniere
is here to help. He bills himself as

the smartest man in the world with an IQ
of 240.

Not one, but three degrees from the
prestigious Rensselaer Polytechnic

in upstate New York. A child judo
prodigy and a concert -level pianist who

demonstrates his talent.

But despite his innumerable skills, he
claims to live like a monk, a

No need for material wealth when one
holds the keys to higher consciousness,

which Ranieri shares in videos like this
to spread his teachings.

All the things that happen in life on
this earth are really an

exercise in oneself with oneself.

I loved the program.

It had emotional components, it had
philosophical components, and then it

practical components of goal setting.

The programs attract some wealthy, well
-connected participants, according to

former NXIVM publicist Frank Parlato.

So they had quite a flow of money.

Emiliano Salinas, the son of the former
president of Mexico.

Alejandro Betancourt, who was the son of
a financier.

NXIVM training centers spring up across
North America with big names

from business and government reportedly
taking

courses.

But to get the full effect, you have to
come here to NXIVM headquarters outside

Albany, New York, where new recruits go
through a 16 -day marathon boot camp of

sorts known as an intensive.

Students started at 7 in the morning and
stayed until 9, 10 at night, 16 days in

a row.

Only after their indoctrination are they
allowed to meet the man himself, the

revered leader Keith Raniere.

He was the most ethical. He was the
highest minded. He looked up at the

and saw through them.

Nectium Strange sessions follow what are
known as the rules and rituals.

We would clap at the beginning or the
end of a class.

We would also do the bow to each other,
and it was designed after Keith's

martial arts background.

Also borrowing from the martial arts,
every member wears a colored sash,

signifying their rank.

So you had a white sash as a student,
and then you went to yellow as a coach,

and then orange as a trainer.

I do know that some people were
vehemently against them.

We discussed that people are going to
say that we're a cult if we have these

things.

Unlike a judo belt that's based on
skills, NXIVM sashes are based on money.

Even the entry -level white sash doesn't
come cheap.

The introductory course alone runs as
much as $10 ,000, and no one ever

graduates.

You take a $5 ,000 course, and as soon
as you were done with that, you'd be

now you're really ready to take the next
one.

It's easy to rack up a six -figure tab
in a year, but trainers can make some of

that money back by recruiting new
students.

Trainers made, let's call it a
commission.

On the program.

But out of that commission, trainers
have to cover expenses like the hotel

meeting room.

At NXIVM, it appears that the path to
higher consciousness takes the shape of

pyramid.

Is it a pyramid scheme?

It's possible that yes, it is. It was,
it had a, I'm going to say it was

definitely pyramidical in nature.

It was structured as a multi -level
marketing program that was probably

pyramid in the sense that nobody but
Ranieri and a couple at the top made any

kind of a living wage.

To Ranieri's most devoted adherents,
none of that matters.

They follow him to the quiet suburban
subdivision where he lives in this

unassuming townhome.

He owns no car, not even a driver's
license.

But it's not so bad.

When he lived here, there were 20 or 30
women who had similar townhomes.

Did he want something to eat? Five or
six women would vie for the privilege.

Should he want his feet massaged, he
could call upon 20 women, and each would

hope for that opportunity to touch his
precious feet.

In NXIVM, it takes a village.

Next on American Greed, Keith Raniere's
twisted path from prodigy

to pitchman and ultimately purveyor of a
toxic philosophy that will shock the

world. The women have to learn how to
humiliate themselves.

In this quiet subdivision outside
Albany, New York, NXIVM has taken root,

to higher consciousness in the shape of
a pyramid.

Founder Keith Raniere lives here with
his most ardent followers, most of whom

happen to be women.

He had dozens of women who wanted to
have nothing more than just a half an

of his time. He had women fighting to do
his laundry.

There are early morning walks and
evening volleyball games.

And there's gossip.

Robert Gavin is a reporter with the
Albany Times Union.

There was a lot of questions about this
guy. Who is this guy?

And there was a lot more questions than
there were answers. But the answers that

we did know were not overly flattering.

After graduating from Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute in 1982,

Ranieri learns the basics of multi
-level marketing as an Amway

By 1990, he has an idea for a business
of his own.

Hello, I'm Eddie Albert. With a pitch
from aging 60s TV star Eddie Albert,

Ranieri launches Consumers Buy Life, a
buying club where members pay a monthly

fee to get discounts on all kinds of
products.

His idea is not fancy.

It's a simple one, practical.

Full of common sense.

The real money comes when members
recruit new members and collect

Classic multi -level marketing.

Tony Natale is an early employee,
captivated by Ranieri from their first

meeting.

When I said to him, so I don't
understand, you know, you have a 240 IQ.

You could be curing cancer. God gifted
you with this brilliant talent.

And he said, this is going to be...

how I'm going to try to change the
world. And don't you want to come along?

And, you know, that was the hook.

So much so that Natali leaves her
husband, moves to Albany, and becomes

Ranieri's girlfriend.

At its peak, Consumer's Byline boasts
250 ,000 members.

Keith Ranieri claims to be a
multimillionaire in his 30s.

But there are complaints about high
-pressure sales tactics.

Some members say they're not getting
paid.

Twenty -three states launch
investigations.

In 1996, Ranieri settled with the state
of New York without admitting wrongdoing

for $40 ,000 and a promise to get out of
the multi -level marketing business in

the state for good.

He was not supposed to be involved in
that sort of thing again.

Consumers Byline teaches Ranieri a tough
lesson.

Just not the one the Attorney General
had in mind, according to former NXIVM

consultant Joe O 'Hara.

When he got caught on consumer byline,
his name was on everything.

And so his takeaway from that was, well,
the next time I do something, I'm not

going to have my name on anything.

Within months, a new multi -level health
products business launches with Tony

Natale at the helm.

and Keith Bernieri serving as a
consultant.

But in their personal life, as she will
later claim in a court filing, he

becomes abusive.

He is also spending more time with a
client, a local nurse named Nancy

cooking up another multi -level venture
whose product is the meaning of life.

Finally, Natale breaks off their
relationship.

leaving Ranieri to focus on the business
with Salzman.

It's called NXIVM.

I do this, and it's with a twisted sense
of pleasure.

On paper, Salzman is the CEO.

He takes the title prefect.

Ranieri proclaims himself a vanguard.

In these videos, sharing the philosophy
with members, he dreams up the

curriculum. Also, everyone who claims
victimhood is an abuser, and every

is a type of victim.

And she sells it as NXIVM's top
recruiter.

Vanguard's teachings delve into the
differences between the sexes.

So men see women as not able to deal
with responsibility.

That is true, and the reason why is
because men keep them away from it,

was necessary in the jungle.

In 2002, NXIVM lands its most important
women yet.

Sisters Claire and Sarah Brockman,
heiresses to the multi -billion dollar

Seagram's Liquor Fortune.

The sisters don't respond to inquiries
from American greed.

Angela Ucci is one of their earliest
trainers.

Sarah was in love with love.

Sarah's a sweetie.

When Claire came into the company, she
was a showjumper with horses, and she

pretty well acclaimed.

Keith convinced her that showjumping
wasn't for the highest good, and she

decided to come on more full -time with
the company.

The sisters are spending more time with
NXIVM, and they're spending more money,

family money, the kind of money that
attracts attention.

And I went, is that real?

When American Greed returns, the women
of NXIVM.

I felt like I met the people that I was
going to be working with to change the

world. They join for a purpose.

But Keith Raniere has a purpose of his
own.

When Keith approached people sexually,
he knew full well their background

and their psychology.

In just five years, Keith Raniere's self
-help group, NXIVM, has gained a

worldwide following, including Claire
and Sarah Brofman, the youngest

of billionaire businessman and
philanthropist Edgar Brofman Sr.

In 2003, the old man decides to see what
all the fuss is about.

The girls wanted to work on their
relationship with him.

Their dad came to a training in New York
City, and I coached his group.

Initially, Brockman seems impressed, and
NXIVM appears ready to take off.

They bring on board consultant Joe O
'Hara as a fixer of sorts.

You come to me with your problem, I will
go find the solution.

NXIVM also welcomes a national reporter
from Forbes magazine.

People thought, in fact, that it was
going to be a positive article until it

came out.

There on the cover of the October issue
of Forbes is Keith Raniere, the world's

strangest executive coach.

NXIVM is described as a cult of
personality.

All the sordid details are there.

Consumers byline, the rules and rituals.

The article says the 17 -hour days and
sleepless nights drive several students

over the edge.

At least one is hospitalized for
psychiatric treatment.

It was a bad article.

It was about as bad as you can get.

The article claims Claire Brockman has
loaned the group $2 million, which she

denies.

Edgar Brockman's quote about Nectium
hits hardest of all.

I think it's a cult.

Keith blamed their father.

for turning it into a negative article,
and it became a bone of contention with

them and their dad.

Bernieri tells Forbes that NXIVM is
nothing like a cult, but the damage is

And Joe O 'Hara is finding the problems
may go deeper.

There's a tremendous amount of money
going through this corporation, and they

are doing some things that are pretty
dodgy.

Like the fact that NXIVM is made up of
dozens of corporations, apparently part

of a dubious tax strategy.

I think by 2004, I had uncovered 40

-something companies, and I was being
asked to set up more of them.

Ranieri may have no wealth to his own
name, but Claire Brockman owns an island

in the South Pacific at Vanguard's
disposal.

I was invited on a walk with him early
on.

It turns out he is no celibate monk.

When Keith approached people...

sexually. He knew full well their
background and their psychology.

Angela Ucci shuts him down.

She's surprised by his response.

He went on to say, and I'm going to ask
you to make an agreement right now to

never repeat this conversation to anyone
else.

But in rational inquiry, secrets are a
no -no. We taught that secrets

-expression.

It is one of Uchi's first indications
that all may not be quite what it seems.

Vanguard, happy, happy birthday.

In NXIVM, Keith Raniere's birthday
doesn't just warrant a party. It's part

10 -day celebration every August known
as Vanguard Week.

Keith is on stage and people are
bringing up gifts.

And then the Brockman sisters come out.

All they've got is a big piece of
cardboard, like those checks you see

people win the lottery. And they flip it
over, and they had just given Keith $20

million.

And I went,

is that real?

It's real, all right.

Though officially it represents a future
charitable donation.

But even that giant check doesn't seem
to be enough.

The way I would describe Keith Raniere,
he's one of those people that can't

afford to win.

Because when he wins, he has to put it
all back in.

Like when the Brockmans lend him $65
million to play the commodities market,

he loses it all.

He falsely claims Edgar Brockman Sr.

must have rigged the market to spite
him.

The loan is not repaid.

Claire was perfect for Keith to take
advantage of her issue because her dad

didn't really like her that much. Now
she's got big daddy Keith.

Bronfman Money supercharges a strategy
Ranieri has been employing for years,

dragging his enemies through legal hell.

They were able to just continue to sue
them and sue them and sue them over

everything you could think of.

After Ranieri's bitter breakup with Tony
Natale, a judge finds that Ranieri

relentlessly harasses her, even after
she declares bankruptcy.

Normally, the process takes a few
months, a chance to make a fresh start.

But Ranieri sues her in bankruptcy court
for fraud, tying up her case for years.

The judge says it all smacks of a jilted
fellow's attempt at revenge.

O 'Hara claims other enemies become the
targets of aggressive private

investigators.

What I know is enough for me to quit.

But what really scared me is all the
things I didn't know.

But walking away from NXIVM is much
easier said than done.

The lawyers come after him.

They kept changing law firms. We would
start all over again.

Motions up.

But Vanguard has no time right now for

Up next, new friends in high places.

Maybe he really is a guru.

It's a red -letter day in Albany, New
York.

The line outside the Palace Theater
wrapped around three blocks.

His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, the
spiritual leader of Tibet, has traveled

miles to Albany.

With him on stage are Claire and Sarah
Brothman.

And in the front row, Keith Raniere and
Nancy Salzman, the leaders of NXIVM. It

is a spectacular public relations coup.

Maybe he really is a guru.

But it almost doesn't happen.

The headlines announcing his visit are
quickly followed by headlines calling

NXIVM... Cult -like.

Several local venues refuse to host the
event.

His Holiness reads the papers too, and
he abruptly cancels.

Inside NXIVM, the problems go deeper.

Nine of its longest -serving members,
including Angela Ucci, say the

organization has lost its way.

There was sexual stuff. There was
business stuff. There was secrecy.

And not unlike consumers byline more
than a decade ago, many say they are not

being paid to the tune of more than $2
million.

They owed us commission money. They owed
me trainer money.

Uchi and the others decide to confront
Ranieri.

And they record the whole thing.

But what I'm trying to say, though,
Keith, is that we believe that there are

certain problems.

Ranieri does not take it well.

I've been shot at because of my beliefs.

I've had to make choices. Should I have
bodyguards? Should I have them armed or

not?

I've had people killed because of my
beliefs.

I think what he was doing is he was
being a peacock like he is, being, you

how great I am and how big I am and how
important I am.

Let's be honest, if he had anyone
killed, do you think he would have said

a meeting to all of us?

The women decide they have no choice but
to quit.

The highest ranking defectors yet.

They come to be known as the NXIVM -9.

And if they don't get their money, they
will go to the press.

But Keith Raniere isn't worried.

The Dalai Lama has agreed to come after
all, after Raniere leads a delegation to

see him.

I believe it was three people, including
one Bronfman.

Within days of the event, a new charity
appears in New York State, the Dalai

Lama Trust.

His office does not respond to American
Greed, but issued a statement in 2018

saying no money changed hands.

Regardless. NXIVM is raking it in with
new programs tailored specifically for

women, for men, for children, even for
actors.

They include Allison Mack, known for
TV's Smallville, and Canadian actress

Sarah Edmondson.

I was immediately scooped up by the
higher ranks as family.

And I felt like I met the people that I
was going to be working with to change

the world.

Another actress, Catherine Oxenberg,
from the 1980s TV hit Dynasty, takes

classes along with her daughter, India,
who declines American Greed's request

for an interview.

Catherine finds all the new programs
suspicious.

I started to smell a rat. It was like,
this...

was just a way for them to make more
money.

The rat she's smelling may be Ranieri.

I didn't like that they idolized this
guy, Keith Ranieri.

Everything was, thank you, Vanguard.
Even though the guy wasn't in the room,

was like the Wizard of Oz.

But India Oxenberg is hooked.

Vanguard leads NXIVM down a horrifying
path.

You can do a lot of crazy in this
country. You cannot brand people.

Nine of Keith Raniere's most faithful
followers have quit NXIVM.

They are among the few who know the
organization's deepest secrets.

For Secrets of NXIVM to come out, they
have to come out from within.

In 2012, with help from the NXIVM 9, the
Albany Times Union publishes a

blockbuster four -part series called
Secrets of NXIVM.

There are allegations of psychological
abuse, even a suicide.

The paper also posts video interviews
online.

Nothing is done without his okay.

From how you dress to what you eat,

what your weight is, decisions you make.

Tony Natale, Ranieri's ex -girlfriend
from the 90s who left in the early years

of NXIVM, tells the paper that she now
believes that even back then,

NXIVM was no self -help organization.

Are you among the critics of NXIVM and
Keith Raniere, who believe that he is

leader of a cult?

Yes.

Most explosive of all, the series
alleges that Raniere, who is 51 at the

has a long history of sexual
relationships with underage girls.

Gina Melita tells the paper that her
relationship with Ranieri began when he

24 and she was just 15.

It seemed okay to my 15 -year -old mind
at first.

He knew, he was like, well, we obviously
can't tell your mother about this.

Ranieri does not respond to the paper's
requests for an interview, nor does he

respond to American Greed.

You figured it was just a matter of time
before the bottom dropped out of it,

but that's not what happened.

Instead, Ranieri seems emboldened, and
his remaining followers are more devoted

than ever.

Allison Mack from the TV series
Smallville has gone in big, recording

videos with Vanguard.

When someone's being authentic, you get
the feeling that you reach into their

very essence and you meet a unique
individual.

I don't know why, it makes me want to
cry.

It's beautiful.

In 2015, Mack and Lauren Salzman,
daughter of NXIVM co -founder Nancy

helped create a new society exclusively
for NXIVM women to be known as DOS.

Actress Sarah Edmondson is among
Lauren's recruits.

She told me it was an international
women's group that would be totally

underground and a group of women working
together to be a force for good in the

world.

In order to be considered for
membership, women must first hand over

called collateral, blackmail -worthy
material, nude photos, and damaging

information.

And this is all for you to really
commit.

It is a strange brand of women's
empowerment.

Allison Mack and Lauren Salzman are
considered masters.

Their recruits, like Sarah, are referred
to as slaves.

Members are kept on starvation diets, as
little as 500 calories a day.

Slaves must be available to their
masters at a moment's notice, 24 hours a

So women have to learn how to humiliate
themselves, each other.

DOS is not a women's empowerment group
at all.

The name is an acronym for a Latin
phrase, Dominus Obsequius Sororium,

translated, Master over the obedient
women.

DOS slaves are expected to recruit
slaves of their own. It is yet another

pyramid. And sitting at the top,
unbeknownst to the women until after

Keith and Allison, what's the text?

There is one final sign of devotion,
which Raniere describes to Allison Mack

during a morning walk through the
neighborhood, January 9th, 2016.

Doing the actual brand in an orderly
fashion.

In keeping with NXIVM policy to preserve
every utterance of Vanguard, Mack

records the conversation.

Authorities will later tease the audio
as evidence.

It probably should be a more vulnerable

The women are to be stripped nude and in
a solemn ceremony, branded in their

Sarah says that years of NXIVM
indoctrination suppress her instincts to

Some 50 women are drawn into DOS.

Among them, 25 -year -old India
Oxenberg, daughter of TV star Catherine

Oxenberg, who learns about DOS when a
friend of India's calls to warn her.

These girls were all part of this inner
circle, and that they were recruiting

other women to have sex with Keith. I
mean, all this stuff, I was, like,

spinning.

India, too, has been branded.

Catherine calls blogger and former NXIVM
consultant Frank Parlato and tells him

what she knows.

Sort of a light bulb went off in my
head, and now you know I think I've got

Frank Parlato is the first to reveal the
existence of DOS and the branding

ritual in a blog post in June of 2017.

Called Branded Slaves and Master
Raniere.

You can do a lot of crazy in this
country. You cannot brand people.

In Parlato's blog post, the victims are
anonymous. The women of DOS keep their

vow of silence.

That is about to change.

They had been told that the symbol
burned into their flesh represents the

elements. Instead, they learned it is
formed from the initials of Keith

and Allison Mack.

It's not okay to hurt a woman's body.
It's not okay to carve someone else's

initials into someone else's flesh.

Branding means you are owned by another
person.

On October 18th, Sarah Edmondson is the
first DOS woman to go public.

On the front page of the New York Times.

We began interviewing witnesses within
days.

When American Greed returns.

We have somebody who is a danger to
society.

Bringing Vanguard to justice.

But first, you have to catch him.

Keith Raniere's Secret Society of NXIVM
Women has been exposed in a front -page

article in the New York Times.

It is October of 2017, and Assistant U
.S. Attorney Moira Penza in Brooklyn

takes an immediate interest.

It was within days of the Harvey
Weinstein story breaking. We were within

of the hashtag MeToo movement.

All of us were really taking a hard look
at men in positions of power and abuses

of that power.

But Keith Raniere isn't sticking around
to reflect.

Instead, he votes for the border.

Once he's in Mexico, there's the concern
that he really will go off the grid.

Finally, in March, they track him down.

Keith Raniere was in this $10 ,000 a
week villa in Puerto Vallarta,

by these women.

Allison Mack is there. So is Lauren
Salzman.

There are plans in the evening for a
recommitment ceremony.

NXIVM talk, apparently for group sex.

Until the agenda is rudely interrupted
by Mexican police.

Keith Raniere has holed himself up in a
closet, protecting himself, while Lauren

Saltzman is made to interact with the
federales.

That whole arresting really is an
example of everything we know about

Raniere, because here he is, this
renunciate, and where is he? He's in a

What is he doing? Is he being brave? Is
he this leader? No, he's hiding in a

closet.

At the same time in Albany, FBI agents
descend on NXIVM's suburban subdivision,

gathering evidence.

Ranieri is returned to New York, where a
judge orders him held without bail.

He is charged with multiple felonies,
including sex trafficking, forced labor,

and criminal conspiracy.

But in six weeks of testimony, the
prosecution paints a picture of a man

claims to be a genius, yet nearly flunks
out of college.

Who preaches empowerment, but practices
something different.

And the person should ask to be branded.

Jurors hear Raniere's own words about
the branding ritual.

And they should probably say that before
they're held down.

It doesn't seem like they're being
coerced. Okay.

It takes only five hours for the jury to
reach its verdict.

And when Ranieri walked into the
courtroom, the very first thing he said,

audible in the court was, this is not
justice.

The jury finds Ranieri guilty on seven
counts, among them racketeering,

including sexual exploitation of a child
and sex trafficking.

Oh, my God, it's final. It is final.

and his victims will finally see

In September 2020,

Claire Bronfman was sentenced to nearly
seven years in prison.

A month later, in October 2020, Keith
Raniere was sentenced to 120 years

bars.

the pain she endured while under
Ranieri's spell.
