The Medellin Cartel, Colombia's coke
-trafficking killers who declared war on

their own country while building the
world's largest drug syndicate versus

Somali pirates.

Africa's modern -day nautical marauders
who make millions by stealing,

kidnapping, and killing.

Biomedical engineer Jeff Damelin will
collect the combat data.

Spent some time training with the
Canadian Armed Forces. It'll give me a

insight to the training and the weapons
these guys are bringing to the game.

The injuries will be assessed by ER
doctor Armand Dorian. I'm bringing real

information from the hospital that I see
on a daily basis to these warriors. If

they get shot, are they going to be down
for a while or are they going to die

instantly? Computer specialist Max
Geiger will enter the results of each

into a program designed to reproduce
combat scenarios.

Both combatants forge their mentalities,
tactics, and skills out of necessity.

They know what they want, and they know
how to achieve it. In the end, the two

sides will fight a battle to the death.

The winner will be the deadliest
warrior.

The Medellin cartel's weapons will be
wielded by...

Michael Corleone Blanco, the son of
Griselda Blanco, the cartel's Florida

drug boss known as the Queen of Miami.

My mother was the number one distributor
of cocaine to the United States. She's

the inventor of cocaine trafficking.

I grew up around this constant violence
on a daily basis that was considered

civilized. Former Medellin cartel drug
trafficker and henchman, Kenny Gallo.

Made millions doing the cartel's dirty
work.

During the mid -80s, I transported
cocaine and I committed violence on

the organization to preserve and protect
our power.

The reason why I appear on camera, I am
an FBI protected witness and I changed

my life.

The Medellin Cartel originated in the
city of Medellin, Colombia in the 1970s.

It quickly became the most violent and
powerful drug trafficking organization

the world.

It was run by the notorious Pablo
Escobar.

Under his reign, the cartel controlled
over 80 % of the global cocaine market.

At its peak, the cartel was making
between $60 and $65 million a day in

Escobar used this vast wealth to control
the Colombian government and law

enforcement. During Escobar's reign, his
motto was plata o plomo, which means

silver or lead. In other words, you
could take a bribe or you could take a

bullet.

Being on the wrong side of the cartel is
a death sentence. That's a place where

you don't want to be.

But our Somali experts believe the
pirates are far deadlier.

Iraq War veteran Abdi Ali.

He grew up in a Somali refugee camp and
saw firsthand how poverty and violence

breed desperation.

The biggest strength of the Somali
pirates is that they have absolutely

to lose and everything to gain.

Somali native.

And pirate weapons expert, Haji Yukash.

He fought in the Somali civil war.

Nobody can beat the pirates.

The Somali have been fighting forever.

They don't care who they're fighting.

Somalia sits on the far eastern tip of
Africa.

A poor country.

Its people survived for generations
fishing the waters off the country's

But in the 1980s, things changed.

Foreign fishing fleets coming over there
and taking the livelihood of the local

fishermen. Local fishermen took up arms
to protect their resources.

Then in 1991, civil war broke out.

Somalia's infrastructure was decimated.

There is no government in Somalia. It's
the wild, wild west out there. Either

kill or be killed.

This perfect storm of desperation
created a dangerous new breed of

Some of them are fishermen that know the
sea, and some of them know about guns

because they were militiamen fighting in
the streets of Somalia. When you

combine those two forces, you've got
deadly guys.

The Somali pirates' treasure chest, the
Gulf of Aden.

Over 21 ,000 ships carry billions of
dollars of precious cargo a year through

what has become known as Pirate Alley.

On average, when they hijack a ship,
they usually get between $1 .5 to $2

million.

Both combatants are motivated by money,
but which one will prove deadlier?

When I think Somali pirate, I think of a
guy who's grown up in violence, and

when he's around 18, he finds out real
quick that an AK -47 can solve a lot of

his problems. My edge goes to Somali
pirate.

Cartel are better organized, they have
better funding. My edge goes to the

Colombian cartel.

To send messages to their most hated
adversaries.

The cartel turned to an horrific weapon
of mass destruction.

The car bomb.

A vehicle packed with enough dynamite to
level a city block with a simple click

of a remote detonator.

This was the Medji drug cartel's tool in
order to show the power that we had and

our complete disregard for our
government and other foreign countries.

The Meiji drug cartel used it in front
of the DAS building. The civilian

casualties were spread out for miles.

DAS is Columbia's equivalent to the FBI.

On December 6th, 1989, the cartel placed
a bomb -filled vehicle outside the DAS

building.

It killed 52 people and injured 1 ,000
more.

What I understand from the DAS building,
the cartel used over 1 ,100 pounds.

of dynamite. Now, for safety, we're
going to scale that back to 40 pounds of

dynamite. It's still the biggest boom
we'll have seen on this show to date.

While this blast will be roughly 25
times smaller than the original DAS

explosion, will it still be deadly?

That's a car bomb.

That's how you erase competition.

The explosion has left a trail of
scorched earth and scattered limbs.

The rear half of the car was blasted 40
yards across the testing ground.

I've been an EMT.

I've done blast testing.

I have not seen anything like this
before.

Look at the blast pattern you see here.
If you just look at the ground here,

it's completely covered with shrapnel,
so it's almost impossible not to get

Target closest to ground zero never had
a chance.

Red is dead, and I don't think we need
to talk about that.

Major neck wound.

This is horrible. It's horrendous. You
see these things? They're flying blades,

and they went straight through the belly
here. Look at this one. This one goes

straight through the neck, right
midline, right through the trachea. I

that's the perfect way to kill. But you
know what that is, right? That's a wiper

blade.

But further out, another has not
suffered the same fate.

Oh, not tripped.

You know what? And according to my
numbers, this guy was far enough away to

be exposed to roughly 33 PSI. So
eardrums knocked out, perhaps a dropped

lung, perhaps a perforated intestine.

But from the primary shockwave alone,
this guy's not dead.

The odds of being hit by a car bomb like
this are pretty slim because you're

going to be moving all over the place.

Well, then we'll move the vehicle. We
move the target to where you are, and

we detonate it. I just move out of the
way. Yeah, you got to move pretty far,

brother. If you're in the area, you're
dead.

The high -speed footage reveals the tar
bomb's devastating power.

Well, yeah, that's nice. That's what
that is. That's nice.

Are you serious?

Oh, yeah, they're dead.

That is intense, man. I've never seen
anything like that.

I mean, that's a big explosion, but in a
real -world battle situation, it has no

effect against the pirates whatsoever.

How can you use that against pirates?
Vaporization. The same device can be put

anywhere on your boat. Unless you want
to be a suicide bomber, man, you have no

chance.

Inside our fight lab, a team of doctors,
scientists, and weapons experts are

If the murderous Medellin drug cartel
fought the deadly African hijackers, the

Somali pirates, who would win?

Cocaine is the goose that laid the
golden egg, and the Medellin cartel

anything in its power to keep that flow
of money going and going and going.

It's estimated that 27 tons of Colombian
cocaine was produced in 1986 alone.

75 % of that was shipped to the United
States.

They would fill up Cessnas, they'd take
out all the seeds, bring it into

mainland Florida and California.

The cartel's cocaine profits would have
made it the 56th richest country on the

planet.

A stark contrast to Somalia, where
people lived on less than $2 a day.

The pirates... turn to their own natural
resource, the heavily traveled Somali

coast.

Since there is no real navy to control
the Somali coast, the main pirate gangs

join forces because they figure out how
easy it was to hijack ships. The pirates

have definitely support in the local
area because they bring a lot of money

the local economy.

Money is the motivating force.

Each team of warriors brings their own
arsenals of deadly weapons.

The Somali pirates are packing serious
heat with a PKM machine gun.

AK -47 assault rifle, grappling hook,
and RPG -7.

The Medellin drug cartel will
counterattack with their M60 machine

-guzzi, machete, and car bomb.

But our pirate experts don't need a set
of wheels to send their message of

mayhem.

They're packing the very symbol of
guerrilla fighters.

The RPG -7, a Russian -made anti -tank
grenade launcher that can pierce the

steel hull of any tanker.

I came across this weapon when I was in
the army in Iraq, and it's deadly.

And how would the Somalis acquire this
weapon?

Somalia used to be a dumping ground for
Russian arms back in the Cold War.

Anything that goes boom, you can find it
in Somalia. We've got to do a trip to

Somalia.

Pirates use the RPG to threaten as well
as disable target ships.

Due to homeland security restrictions,
the weapon will be tested on land to see

if it can take out a tanker's command
center.

Got a mock -up here of a ship's bridge,
steel wall, ship's captain, and a

crew member.

You'll start 150 yards out, and we'll
see what kind of damage and accuracy

warhead has.

That's crazy.

That's serious, man.

RPG -7 demolished the ship's bridge.

But was its blast big enough to kill its
captain and crew?

Hey, Hodge. Nice work, man.

You know what? I don't see any frag in
the backside of this guy. I want to

And it's tripped.

He's dead.

But I don't see any frag. What do you

Yeah, no frag. But what we're seeing is
this structure is a model of what

happens to your ear. It's a model of
what happens to your lungs and your

intestines. Boom, it blows out in all
directions.

Let's check out this metal wall. Look at
the hole in this thing. It's a well

-shaped jar. It really is. Exactly what
it had to do, hunt right through that

wall. Check this out. Look at the head,

The 100G patch on this guy is actually
not tripped. All this means to me is

guy right there must be the luckiest
bastard alive because look at his body.

They're all messed up. Let me paint a
picture of what that guy is actually

seeing. A ruptured eardrum, his head
starting to whirl and spin.

He's got his lungs collapsed. He can't
breathe. And the only thing he does see,

body parts all over the place of his
comrades.

That's pretty bad.

But not bad enough to impress the
Colombians.

Do you really think this little rocket
can compare to the car bomb? I can aim

it. I can reload it as many times as I
like. While you're reloading, I'll kill

you from a mile away.

That car bomb was ridiculously
devastating, and it was only 40 pounds

dynamite, whereas in the real case, they
used 1 ,100.

The RPG, you can actually aim and do
repeat fires, but the amount of

and kill that you'll get with that car
bomb is just unreal.

Sure, you're going to get a lot of
collateral damage, but the devastation

just going to be complete. We're talking
blocks.

So I've got to give it to the car bomb.

Right. Blow sips. The edge goes to the
Medellin cartel's car bomb.

The battle has just begun.

Coming up, a rapid -fire nightmare that

A battle between Somali pirates and the
Medellin drug cartel may come down to

the last bullet.

The Somalis believe they have the
advantage.

Their warriors have battle -hardened
from two decades of civil war.

These guys, they come from the hardest
places in Somalia. They come from the

poorest, most ravaged and violent areas.

By being there, that's training for them
right there, because they're fighting

constantly. But the pirates are also
well -funded.

To share in their bounty, Somali
warlords and wealthy financiers invest

for newer weapons and better votes.

But the cartel believe their killers are
better financed and better trained.

Medinjo cartel was trained by
paramilitary groups, Israeli special

Former Israeli commandos turned rogue
mercenaries were hired to train a

army of assassins, the Sicarios.

These hired killers ranged from
inexperienced hitmen to highly trained

operatives. But both were responsible
for thousands of murders, including

and presidential candidates.

You could hire any local sicario for a
couple hundred dollars, give him a

picture and tell him, this is who I want
dead, put his brains on the floor.

A popular assassination move was a
motorcycle drive -by. The gun.

The mini Uzi, a nine millimeter rapid
fire killer.

We have a mini Uzi, 32 round clip, fully
auto, fires about 980 rounds a minute.

Preferred weapon of choice for the
Medellin cartel. In Colombia, we call it

que gaguea, the one that started.

The cartel would have two guys on a
motorcycle.

The passenger would be the trigger man.

So they would pull up next to a car and
fire into it.

Motorcycles allowed Sicarius to navigate
the busy city streets of Medellin and

make a quick getaway.

Okay, guys. In order to demonstrate the
lethality of this test, we've got this

car set up.

Two mannequins inside.

Due to the extreme danger of this
maneuver.

Former military operatives wearing
traditional Sicario ski masks will

Now imagine this car stopped at a red
light. A motorcycle can weave in and out

of traffic, pull up beside you, hit you
hard, hit you fast, gone before you even

know it.

A suppressor is attached to silence the
gun used by Sicario to avoid unwanted

attention.

Sicario! Are you ready?

Done deal, man. That's a done deal.

The damage is devastating.

Okay, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11,
12, 13, 14, 15 shots in this guy's

head. Yeah, that's a good hit.

So 32 rounds in the cliff, half of them
are in his head.

Okay, let's check out the other side.

Looks like this door has been sprayed
with blood and brain.

And this guy here, look at that, one
through the bridge of his nose.

Airways, spinal cord, major blood
vessels. He's dead several times over.

It's a too clunky, too long weapon.

With the Uzi, it's a completely
different story. I got the Uzi right

coat pocket, and I'm saying, hi, excuse

The Uzi is an excellent weapon short
distances, but my AK -47 is good for

range and long distance.

AK -47.

An automatic machine gun from Cold War
Russia that can take down a tub from

three football fields away.

This is the classic AK -47, the go -to
gun for the Somali pirates. It shoots a

.62x39 round, shoots about 550 rounds
per minute. You're also a bad guy's gun.

To assess the accuracy and killing power
of the AK -47, Jeff has simulated a

true -to -life Somali assault.

Since the pirates' attack on the ocean,

Abdi will shoot at the targets from a
small scale.

Got four targets set up there. Two at 50
yards, two at 100 yards. So we'll get

the range and for accuracy on a moving
platform, okay?

You ready to get this going? Let's do
it, baby. Okay, man.

The targets at the 50 -yard range have
been utterly decimated.

Wow, I mean, if you take a look here,
you got chest shot, chest shot, chest

shot, chest shot, chest shot.

I mean, it's just completely riddled.

shot, nobody could save this guy.

Let's move over to our next target.
These shots here for me are the

to deliver kills like this, I mean, this
was literally overkill. Nice job. At 50

yards, two targets, two men down. Let's
go see what you did at 100 yards.

Again, beautifully placed shots right
through the midsection. One, two, three,

four. He's cracking this guy in half,
and he's like literally tearing off his

love handles here.

This is without a question a kill.

Let's see what happened to number four.

There's no way you could save this guy.
You're delivering it right here on the

left side, left ventricle, and the exit
wounds are higher up. So you're

basically going upward like this right
into the heart. That's a kill.

Four targets total, four men down. Great
work, man.

That's what some other pirates do, man.
These cartel guys have zero chance.

The high -speed footage reveals the
ferocity of the pirates' go -to gun.

Boom, arm shot, there goes the hand.

Boom, there's a shot in the arm again.

Even though it's a mannequin's arm, with
that type of a caliber weapon, if you

hit both bones, you can literally tear
the guy's arm off.

Yeah, he tore up a few arms. He hit a
few torsos. You can't do it as good as I

did because a gun doesn't fire as high a
rate as ours.

You know what? I can do the same thing
you did, but I can do it also from a

distance. Yours, you need to be up close
and personal. What do you guys do with

the Uzi? You don't need technique. You
don't need training. All you need to be

is called Bloody Killer.

Every one of our bullets was a killer.
You were like this close from the

man. I was in a boat.

All it takes is one bullet for me to
kill you.

So which medium -range weapon is
deadlier?

We have seen the AK perform time and
time again. It's a very versatile

With the Uzi, it's all or nothing. With
the AK, I think you have time and you

have distance on your side.

In medium -range weapons, the edge goes

The Somali pilots, they are fighters.

The cartel are just criminals.

Hands down, the Maginot Cartel will take
out the pirates.

Our budget's a lot bigger. Our assassins
are better trained.

But with two tests remaining, the
deadliest warrior is still in doubt.

The cartel believes their long -range
weapon will earn them their victory.

The M60 machine gun.

A blood -spattering chainsaw that could
chop a body from over half a mile away.

The 7 .62 51 caliber fires 500 rounds
per minute. In the 1980s, it was given

the Colombian army, and the cartels got
a hold of it.

But the Somali pirates think their
Soviet -made killer puts the older

M60 to shame.

The BKM machine gun, a heavy metal
firearm that spits out 600 rounds of

per minute.

During the Cold War, the Russians were
trying to buy influence in Somalia, and

they gave a bunch of these guns to the
Somali army.

When the Somali army collapsed, the
pirates got out.

The DKM has a higher rate of fire than
the M60.

It shoots about 600 rounds per minute.

This head -to -head test will show who
has the fastest and most accurate

gun. We'll be shooting from 100 yards
out. You will each have 100 rounds of

ammunition, and you will be timed. We're
going to see how long it takes you to

get four kills on our moving target, and
then how long it takes you to clear

your ammunition.

Tannerite canisters have been strapped
to the dummies and will explode if a

bullet strikes the neck, indicating an
instant kill.

The PKM is jammed. In a real firefight,
that could cost a gunner his life.

Yeah!

Nice shooting, man.

Ooh, look at this.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven.

15, 16, 17.

Dude, he looks like a leopard in the
back. Holy mackerel. He's cut clean

the pipe.

Those rounds have some power behind
them. There's no doubt about that.

One head shot.

A neck shot.

Pumping blood.

Pumping blood from the chest.

He's gone or two.

Right in the neck is what we like to
see.

Exactly.

And there's the round that did it. Plus
a head shot.

Plus a cheek shot.

Subclavian. Cut him out of the game.
He's dead.

Well, we're talking neck shot, two face
shots.

That's a hard shot right there. Two hard

Alcatel experts believe they can outgun
the Somalis.

Jam! The M60 jams within 30 seconds.

Kenny is effectively unarmed. If these
were live targets, he'd be a sitting

duck.

And right away, another jam.

Two jams, man.

Kenny quickly clears the problem and
resumes fire.

The M60 had two malfunctions, but the
slaughter is undeniable.

9, 10, 11, 12, 13.

I mean, you don't need to be an EMT or a
paramedic to figure out this guy's

dead.

Chest cavity gone.

Took care of business, that's all I got
to say.

Wow.

Face gone.

Let's check out the fourth target.

Okay, this is where you want to hit him,
man. That's the apex of the heart

there.

Airway. You know, it's bifurcating
aorta.

This guy's dead.

What can I say, man? That's four kills.

We got a minute 43 seconds with the PKM.

Minute 54 with the M60.

All four kills, two jams with the M60,
one jam with the PKM. They're still

At the same time, in the heat of battle,
a jam represents a catastrophic failure

of the weapon.

And we saw one of those in the case of
the PKM, which is worrisome, but two in

the case of the M60.

Yeah, but our guy was a lot more
accurate. Four kills against four kills.

Which long -range weapon gets the edge?

One of the things that we're seeing here
is a lot of consistency on the part of

our Somali experts. They're able to use
things simply, quickly, efficiently.

They're getting the job done.

Two catastrophic failures versus one
catastrophic failure. I've got to go

the weapon that only had one
catastrophic failure. In this case, it

Somali pirates are good with their
weapons because they carry their gun all

every day. They sleep with it. They tick
with it.

They use it all the time.

Cartel hit men were just as quick on the
trigger.

But a more savage fate lay in store for
anyone who double -crossed the drug

lords. The fastest way to get on the
wrong side of the cartel would be to rob

them, to steal their money.

They have to make an example out of you
so that no one else will do it. In the

criminal world, if you're perceived as
weak, everyone will just take a bite out

of you.

And when they wanted to send a murderous
message... The cartel set aside their

high -tech machine guns and turned to a
more traditional form of butchery.

The machete used for hacking sugar cane
and more.

This right here is a common tool to cut
through bone in Colombia. It became a

tool for the cartels to hack away at
enemies for tortures, hand -to -hand

combat, intimidation.

This definitely does leave a mark. So
you know when you see somebody who's

hit by a machete years later because
that scar never heals.

The correct term is machetazo.

So you can say, like, look at that guy's
machetazo.

You know, it's something you're going to
carry with you for the rest of your

life, if you live.

To test the machete's ability to maim
and kill, Jeff sets up a gel torso with

the same resistance as human flesh.

Michael, you ready?

This thing is truly the eliminator. You
hack both arms off.

This hack, when you first hit, took off
about the wrist.

You know, somebody would actually die
from that, but it would take, you know,

about an hour. But then you moved up.
When you moved up and you hit up here in

the arm, that's the brachial artery.
You'll bleed out from that and die.

But then you went for the neck.

And this, by itself, would kill
instantly.

But the cartel didn't stop at slashing
the neck.

Their signature move was to pull the
victim's tongue through the open wound

further silence would -be snitches.

There it is. Columbia necktie.

Everybody in the world knows about a
Columbia necktie. This is business.

And business to us is personal. This is
some savage hacking. I'm not intimidated

by this at all, buddy. When it comes to
cloak range killing, the Somalis have

their own mutilator.

The rattling hook.

A steel claw used to board hips.

As well as strip human flesh straight
off the bone.

In the hands of Somalians, this is a
deadly weapon. I can gore you with it,

crash your skull with it, or I can swing
it and create a 25 -feet radius of

death. And that looks like something you
can hook a whale with. A whale or a

person. There's potential for blunt
trauma there. There's definitely

for killing with these hooks.

But I'm seeing a great tool to board a
ship with, not something you can kill a

man with.

Convince me.

To test the lethality of the grappling
hook, our team sets up a pig carcass.

I gotta check this out, man. That was

Obviously, this pig or human is dead.

This sharp end with the hook is just
tearing inside.

This is gruesome. There's nothing inside
here that doesn't turn to mulch. That's

how we do it.

This thing looks to be a danger to
whoever's using it. It looks cumbersome

unwieldy. How can you say that, man?
Look at this devastation right here.

maybe in Blackbeard's time it was a
great operational tool, but, I mean, a

machete's longer and much more
intimidating.

So which everyday tool is most lethal?

I like the grappling hook because it
does pierce through the ribs and it can

at the soft, squishy parts on the
inside, but that thing is just not

kill a man.

Fundamentally, it's another knife in a
gunfight.

A machete is simple and effective.

with no match for the Colombian's

massive car bomb.

You know, that car bomb was ridiculously
devastating. The amount of kills that

you'll get with that is just unreal.

Edge. Medellin drug cartel. For the long
-range firefight, the cartel's M60 and

the Somali's PKM both tore that target
to shreds.

While the M60 can certainly do a great
deal of damage, the fact that it jams

means the PKM is my preferred dog in
this fight.

Edge. Somali pirate.

In mid -range combat, the pirate's AK
-47 was paired against the cartel's Mini

-U.

While the mini Uzi was nice because it's
mini and it's kind of concealable, as

soon as we start dealing with a little
bit of distance, the Uzi really does not

become accurate. I got to give it to the
AK.

Edge, Somali pirates.

In close combat, the drug cartel's
machete was pitted against a pirate's

grappling hook. There's a reason why
most warrior cultures embrace the sword

not grappling hook fighting techniques.

We don't have legendary grappling hooks
in the hands of legendary warriors.

our Somali pirates ultimately prevailed

with 522 wins, the Medellin cartels 478.

One of the things that worked in favor
of our Somali pirates was the robust and

reliable design of the PKF.

Why did the Somali pirates win?

The cartels chose weapons that were fear
-based as opposed to battle -efficient.

I don't know how we lost.

Computers make a cut, but a machete does
the cutting.

Of course we knew we were going to win.
