chief who transformed his tribe into a

merciless military machine that united
the Zulu nation.

Biomedical scientist Jeff Damolin will
lead our quest to separate fact from

fiction for these two fabled warriors.

Today, we're not just comparing two
warrior classes.

We're comparing two men, William Wallace
and Shaka Zulu.

They're bringing a lot of bludgeoning
weapons, a lot of cutting weapons.

So this is definitely in and of itself a
death blow.

Computer whiz Max Geiger will track all
the test findings and input the data

into a battle simulation program.

William Wallace versus Shaka Zulu is a
really interesting matchup. We're

at two very different fighting styles,
very diverse weapons, tactics, and

mentalities on the part of both of these
men.

The simulator will take these stats and
create a duel to the death between these

two legendary military leaders. The
winner will be the deadliest warrior.

Wallace's weapons will be wielded by
Kieron Elliott.

A native of Scotland, Tiron is an
authority on combat techniques William

created.

William Wallace inspired an entire
generation of Scots and basically

Scotland ever since.

Also fighting for William Wallace,
Anthony DeLonghi.

Anthony is a world -class swordsman who
has choreographed sword fight scenes for

some of Hollywood's biggest films.

I consider William Wallace to be one of
the greatest warriors in history. He was

a true warrior.

William Wallace started off in the
lowlands of Scotland in a place around

elderly. He grew up at a time where the
English were ruling the Scots and were

dominating.

Wallace inspired his countrymen to rise
up and fight for their freedom.

William Wallace was viewed as a rebel by
many in power, but to the common man,

he was a god.

Rather than being a general on a hill
saying, send in the infantry, he was the

first one in there.

Wallace's rampage to overthrow
Scotland's English oppressors was

most basic emotion of all, revenge.

He married a lovely girl and the English
murdered her and that's when he just

went off the rails.

And he turned it into an absolute war
machine.

William Wallace was trying to send a
clear message to the English that we're

going to take this, we're going to come
to your land, and we're going to do to

you what you've been doing to us for
hundreds of years.

It's a very strong -willed man who
genuinely fought for what he believed

that's what makes him great.

Our William Wallace experts are
confident, but their rivals are betting

Zulu, the man who revolutionized warfare
in Africa.

Martial artist Earl White.

Earl is an expert in African weaponry
and teaches the deadly sport of stick

fighting. The training method Shaka
himself excelled in.

Shaka wanted to fight. Losing wasn't
even a question.

Zulu warfare expert Jason Bartley.

Jason used agility training pioneered by
Shaka Zulu to help him become a three

-time All -SEC linebacker.

Shaka Zulu is one of the greatest
warriors in history.

He took the Zulus from a small tribe and
through warfare, he made the Zulus into

the largest predominant power of
southeastern Africa.

In the early 1800s, much of the
territory in what is now South Africa

into dozens of warring tribes.

Shaka was the illegitimate son of a
small -time Zulu chief, despised from

Shaka's father named him after a
parasitic beetle.

Shaka was pretty much an outcast because
he was the son of a princess and a

king, but from separate tribes. So he
had animosity on both sides.

He spent his entire life waiting on
revenge.

After his father's death, Shaka Zulu
took over his small tribe and began

building an army that transformed
African combat.

His whole essence was about up -close
combat.

Shaka said, we have to be fast,
efficient, and brutal.

Shaka led his unstoppable army to
conquer enemy tribes and rule the

plains.

Shaka's capital was called Bulawayo,
Place of Slaughter.

There was a warning.

and a message to anyone who came from
outside that his political policy was

murder.

So how would the Zulu's most ruthless
warrior fare against the ferocious

Scottish rebel?

Shaka's goal would be to get Wallace's
blood on his weapon.

There really is no competition.

It's basically like swatting an African
fly.

I think Shaka Zulu's fighting style is
going to be so alien to what William

Wallace is expecting. In the end, it's
that X factor that's going to give him

the necessary edge.

I'm going to have to give it to Wallace
simply because every weapon in his

arsenal is one hit equals one kill.

William Wallace's most deadly weapon was
one of the largest swords ever used in

combat. The Claymore.

At four and a half feet long, it
delivers death at a distance.

In Wallace's hands, it was a terrifying
tool of destruction.

The Claymore, it's not a one hit, one
kill. This is one hit, seven kills.

This will literally cut a man in half.

I'm going to cut their arms off, cut
their legs out.

Very, very powerful weapon. There was a
reason that he grew to the stature of

legend. He specialized in beheading
people.

Definitely looks scary just by size, but
the way you wield it.

Just adds another power to the punch.

Find out how much damage the Claymore
can do.

Team, set up the first test.

Okay, Anthony, you say the Claymore can
lop heads, right?

Yes, sir. Okay, I'm going to get you to
put your money where your mouth is.

You've got three necks here made of meat
and the skull is just a little icing on

the cake.

I don't want to see three separate
swings. I want to see one swing, three

heads. I think you better stand back.

Three, two.

One, go.

Look how nice and smooth this blade went
through. This means

a lot of force and speed for it to be
that precise.

It went through the joints of that neck
and just went right through. Well, it

almost looks like it went through one of
those hand -slicing machines. It's

basically turned everything in an eight
-foot radius into a kill zone.

Every detail of that carnage was
captured on the high -speed camera.

Can't wait to see this.

Anything in the path of this blade is
going down.

It's like the Grim Reaper.

You look like the Grim Reaper.

Those heads are looking at

you as they're falling, so that may be
the last conscious thing they see.

I can see why William Wallace loved this
weapon.

Despite the slicing power, the Zulu
experts are unimpressed.

It's a big, long weapon, but it's also
slow.

I have no problem thinking that Shaka
would have many ways to counteract that.

You get underneath that, he's giving me
all his back.

And the blade is very long. That gives
me more time to see it.

A shorter blade is harder for me to sit
if it's moving fast.

You think he can move an eight -foot
radius and get behind me when I'm

at him and standing behind this weapon?
I don't think so.

They're back this time.

I don't care what's behind me. Anything
that walks into that 180 -degree buzzsaw

is going to be cut in half, felled like
a tree.

Team Wallace thinks they've dealt a
fatal blow to Shaka Zulu.

Anyone who encounters Shaka and his
troops, they'd be encircled and they'd

and I'm sure he can move in it very

easily, but there's no defense
whatsoever, especially against this

deadly weapons.

Shaka Zulu comes to battle with the
Iquaz Spear and the Shlongu Shield.

The Iwasa Club, the spit of poison.

William Wallace slashes in with a

I'm seeing a philosophy here with the
William Wallace's weapons.

It's a one -shot, one -kill design.

Shaka Zulu is saying his main strategy
is speed, and what we're seeing on

William Wallace's weapons is they're
slightly slow.

What we're going to need to see from
Shaka, though, is something that's a

bit more convincing than I'm fast and I
can dodge it.

Shaka Zulu revolutionized African combat
tactics, developing specialized weapons

for his army, including a devastating
stabbing spear.

This is the Inquah.

The name comes from the sound that's
made when you stab into the body.

When you pull it out.

An easily wielded wood spear with a
razor sharp iron spike.

What we have is a long stabbing knife. I
can stab with this, stab, and slice.

So it all depends on the range.

I can come up.

I can slice low into the legs. I can
stab into the groin. A nasty blade.

Let's get this one started.

But how effective would the equa be
against a 100 -pound flying pig?

You ready, Earl? I'm ready.

You guys have been boasting movement
from Shaka Zulu, and you've demonstrated

here. Okay, there's a few things we
could talk about immediately with

trauma. We got a collapsed lung, but if
you look down here, you're actually

seeing severed spine, which is pretty
impressive.

I mean, that takes a lot of strength,
and it takes a lot of agility to get

blade right in the right spot with
multiple strikes. This isn't like a

which is a one swoop, but this is rapid
fire, kind of like a machine gun of

blades.

It'd be the analogous of floating like a
butterfly and stabbing like a Zulu.

I like that.

Django would like that.

We are seeing a lot of movement here.
Anything that blade touches, it cuts

through.

Scottish barbecue.

Team William Wallace is unimpressed.

First of all, it's easy to gut a pig
that's already been gutted.

Second of all, you're just going in
through flesh.

Third, we had chain mail on. I want to
see the same chest.

with chainmail, only then can it be a
proper comparison to the actual event.

And the Zulu spear pierced the armor
William Wallace would have worn.

This is a mild 12 -gauge steel, four -in
-one pattern, unriveted chainmail

armor, very typical for the William
Wallace era.

See how deep did you go?

About that far. So you're going to
actually hit the largest vessel in the

which is the aorta. I mean, this is
definitely going maybe an inch or two in

front of the spine.

This is essentially a death blow.

The equine has devastating stabbing
power, and it's only half of a weaponry

combination that helps Shaka Zulu
conquer Southern Africa.

This is the heart of the Zulu warrior as
much as the spirit is.

He is Shlongu's shield.

Oxhide leather that the Zulu say can
even stop a musket bullet.

This was designed specifically for the
short spear. So the shield should be

to cover the body. So I can come
underneath you. I can slice your legs. I

even slice up high when you don't see
it.

An effective defense in Zulu combat.

Can the Islangu shield stand up to a
punishing blow from a weapon that never

existed in Africa, the Scottish
claymore?

They've got light shields, and we'll
simply go straight through the shield

straight through them. They've got no
chance whatsoever.

Measure the strength of the shield.

Behind here, we've got a load cell, so
we'll be able to tell just how much

comes down on the shield, and we'll be
able to see just how much damage the

claymore can do.

Anthony, you ready?

I think we've got a dead Zulu on our
hands.

I'm lucky he didn't go through the load
cell as well.

We've got about 310 pounds.

If Shaka Zulu's hands behind that
shield, at least one bone in his hand,

forearm is going to be busted.

Worst case scenario, and you have to
rely on the shield, I don't think it's

going to be much defense.

We don't rely on the shield.

I'm glad. We don't rely on the shield.
I'm really glad for you. The movement,

the agility, and the speed, and the
mindset.

The Zulu mindset is not to stay and take
it, or else we would have developed a

stronger shield.

The Scottish mindset is search and
destroy.

So I'm coming.

Scottish experts believe in both the
Claymore and William Wallace's

approach to combat.

William Wallace started training with
weapons as a boy, so he had a lot of

experience. Skills learned early in life
made Wallace a leader of men on the

battlefield. They would train them to
anything they could get their hands on

train them up to fighting ability.

The guys that William was attracting
were your renegades, were your battlers,

your scrappers, and really trained them
to the best of his ability.

As a young man, Shaka also mastered Zulu
stick fighting to develop techniques

that would prove lethal with a spear.

He would learn to work the angles of a
stick, work high techniques, work low

sweeping techniques, blocking with the
fan block and the shield.

As a leader, Shaka trained his warriors
to ignore pain.

He made them run through and dance in
thorn bushes and on sharp rocks, so pain

didn't exist. If they didn't stand up to
the training...

They were killed.

You do the training. You block out pain.

You are awarded.

And will Shaka Zulu's fierceness be
enough to slay William Wallace?

It's really not a fair matchup. We've
got chain mail. We've got all of this

weaponry. We've got no chance
whatsoever.

It's not necessarily the weapon. It's
how you use the weapon. Our mindset, our

training methods allow us to be
flexible.

I haven't seen that in their thinking.

So which warrior has the edge in mid
-range weapons?

Both weapons were very impressive.

The Inkwa did something that I didn't
expect. It went through chain mail. But

the Claymore did something I didn't
believe was possible. It lopped off

heads. So I got to go with the Claymore.
The edge for mid -range weapons goes to

William Wallace for the Claymore.

Coming up, Team Zulu comes out swinging

When Shaka has a chance to impale this
weapon into William Wallace, he's going

to love it, because there's nothing like
a victory.

The William Wallace experts are putting
their faith in the Scotsman's love of

brute force.

I don't think they're ready for the
sheer weight of our weaponry. It's going

come, and they're not going to be able
to stop it.

Wallace used a terrifying weapon to
pummel the enemy's front line.

The ball and chain.

A 12 -pound sledgehammer that could be
thrown or slung with bone -crushing

force.

The weapon I've been waiting for. This
is the ball and chain. It doesn't look

big, doesn't look heavy, but my
goodness.

The mass involved in that is incredible.

Very dense.

So obviously this is a formidable
weapon, but listen to this.

Absolutely solid.

To put the ball and chain to the test,
an ice torso is placed on a tech scan

pressure mat to measure the strength of
the hit.

Kieran, are you ready? Yep. On your go,
man. I'm going to trigger on you.

Wow!

Not the most accurate weapon, is it? No.

Oh!

No. No way.

Yeah! Oh!

That'll work.

Oh, my.

Well, job well done, I think.

Well, here's Frosted Hulu's head.

This is smaller than a man's torso.

You took it right out. But it looks to
me like you hit the throat.

Crushing the windpipe hits you in the
sternum, cracking the sternum, breaking

ribs, possibly contusing the heart. This
is meant to break a shield line. This

is early artillery.

So this is a long -range weapon, but it
could be utilized at close range, as you

can see. And whatever this hits, I mean,
wow, it's just going to devastate.

Right. Okay, so here it comes, guys. I
got an energy density of 3 ,200 joules,

which essentially means you're getting
hit by a motorcycle going about 16 miles

per hour. It climbed its way up the
chest, hit the chin, knocked the head

off. Forget it. This is going to hit him
on his ass, no question.

Yeah, he'd be taking a trip off the
field in a pine box or whatever Zulu

customs are. That's an impressive
impact, no doubt.

But with the windup, I don't see that
hitting. You said it'd shock his

grandmother. If he got hit with that...

he would be killed by his fellow Zulu.
That's an exercise tool. That's not a

weapon. Can William Wallace hit Shaka
Zulu with this weapon and kill him?

what I want to know. I'm not certain it
is from this test.

No way.

If you can't hit him, it's a dead
weight. Dead weight's slowing you down,

you're already up against a fast
opponent.

You can talk about accuracy and speed
and everything, but I think that is

possibly the most devastating incident
we have.

Hands down.

And I want the bike.

You can have it.

Wallace experts are confident, but our
scientists are not as convinced.

I've been confident with William Wallace
up until now. I thought for sure this

was going to be an instant kill shot.
That's not what we saw.

And to have them say they were going to
use it in close, I just don't buy it.

Team Zulu's long -range answer is 10
pounds lighter than the ball and chain.

And they say it's also more lethal.

A strong, short wooden club topped by a
bone -crushing knob.

This African war club is a lot lighter
than what we saw with William Wallace's

ball and chain weapon. So I'm guessing
we're going to have a lot higher

effective range on this. Am I right?

This particular weapon, the Iwisa,
you're going to think that this is just

striking club, but we throw it too.

Thrown end over end, the Iwisa slams
into enemies with stunning force.

When we're throwing it, it's part of the
attack.

Anything that makes them disrupt their
normal movement, that gives us an

opening, because we can close 15 to 8
feet very quickly.

Okay, well, there's the target.

Let's get this party started.

Jason will test the Ouisa's power to
penetrate a defensive barrier by trying

smash blood -filled splatter balls
sealed inside a glass case.

Jay, are you ready?

Two, three,

two, one.

I've seen less glass at motor vehicle
accidents.

It is fast.

We clocked it at 35 miles per hour
throwing speed.

So around 60 feet per second? Around 60
feet per second. Right. So we say

quarter second to perceive that weapon
coming at you, another quarter second to

get out of the way. Using that analogy,
this is a 30 feet effective range. That

would be the range we'll use to put into
our computer program.

At 30 feet, we'd be aiming. At 15, it's
relief.

And by the time it makes contact with
the target, if they've blocked or

we're on top of them.

At that range, there's basically no
chance for William Wallace to evade. Did

see that, guys?

Yeah, even better for us. He disarmed
himself beautifully.

Check, check, check.

He's in the shadows.

That instrument you were using, In
Scotland, it's known as a wee pointy

Now, we train with them when we're
eight, but when we progress on to being

men, we train with swords.

That's useless.

That's why you get that.

Look, guys.

Straight off.

Yeah, in Africa, we just deal with big
sticks, but anyway.

But, I mean, seriously, we are covered
in chain mail, helmets, we've got a lot

of armoury. That's going to do nothing.

Between the ball and chain and the
Iwisa, the ball and chain, I don't think

accuracy is going to be enough.

The Iwisa can be thrown accurately, and
while it won't necessarily kill, it can

stun. I give the edge to the Iwisa and
Shaka Zulu.

A long -range weapon, Shaka Zulu takes
the edge with the Iwisa.

Coming up, the battle intensifies as
Team Wallace tries to bring their hammer

down on Shaka Zulu.

William Wallace, Shaka Zulu.

Two legendary fighters from very
different worlds, but equally determined

loose. Neither one of them would ever
give an inch. It would be one of the

intense battles of the century to see
these two men fight.

Both of our expert teams believe their
warrior's arse has the ultimate short

-range killing tool.

This was designed specifically for
breaking bones, for getting through the

helmet, and for breaking dolls.

If that comes anywhere near your head,
you're a goner.

Up first, the Warhammer.

A two -sided weapon with a spike to rip
open armor and a blunt end to smash

heads. To test both ends of the hammer,
two scabs.

One smooth, the other encased in gel
with the same resistance as human skin.

Anthony, are you ready? Ready? Three,
two, one, go!

Any questions?

That was incredible.

There's a piece of skull over 30 feet
away.

So the skull is completely destroyed,
but with regards to this ballistics gel

head, what's important here is you see
it go through the soft tissue. We don't

have a lot of soft tissue on top of our
skull, so it did that pretty easily. It

goes through the skull, right through
the frontal portion of the brain,

through the soft and hard palate of the
mouth, and down to the spine.

Let's pull it out. Figure out just how
deep into his head that was.

It's a good four inches. And if I
actually insert my finger, I could feel

brain matter coming home in pieces if
you get hit with this.

Oh, look at that. That just looks
menacing.

Can you imagine seeing that coming in?

That did actually more.

Split the skull in half. Exactly.

Split the skull in half.

Doing more hammering than spiking, even
on that end. The Warhammer.

One hit, one kill, but it's also fast.

Two kills in under 1 .8 seconds. It's
fast, but it's also short, and I'm

about range.

And up close, I think Shaka's got a lot
of surprises.

And the Shaka Zulu experts feel their
short -range weapon will cut William

Wallace down to size.

The Zulu Axe.

A half -moon -shaped blade designed to
hook an opponent's shield, then hack off

their limbs.

In war, because it has a heavy head,
it's basically something you can use as

pendulum.

All a warrior has to do is actually come
down or come up, and the momentum of

the axe gives you a deadly cut.

Sensors will track the velocity of the
battle axe in full swing, as well as the

force of impact as it strikes the
target.

A leg from a steer.

Jay, are you ready? I'm ready.

Three, two, one, go!

Look at the carnage on this thing, man.
It looks what I threw on my grill last

night. Yeah, this is as good as you're
going to fillet a side of beef.

I mean, this is impressive.

He's wedged an area out on the bone
right here. A blow like this is going to

knock you on your ass. How fast was that
moving?

I clocked him at 23 miles per hour. Not
the fastest two -handed weapon we've

seen, but it's definitely up there. And
if it's got all that weight... in the

head of the weapon, it'll definitely
knock you around a little bit. But we're

wandering in with axes as well. You guys
had grass skirts. We had helmets. You

had headbands.

Point blank. You have to get past a long
spear, a short spear. And once you get

to this weapon, you've been gutted. Your
bowels are on the floor. You're not

doing anything after that. We're talking
about close contact.

We've got actions as well. Your shield
is just a thin piece of height.

We go straight through that. But what's
your footwork like? How are you going to

hang with us? We're maneuvering a 360
around you in every angle. Take a couple

of those before we can get one of them
in. Okay.

You can see a lot of trauma in a short
period of time. That is pretty

impressive.

Come on. That is pretty. Oh, man.

I'm guessing about half a second between
each strike.

That's almost like a perfect 90 -degree
angle where those two cross.

Yeah. Because he's coming in at 45 on
one side, 45 on the other.

Yeah. That's where they meet. Like that
X.

That type of a cut on a body is the most
difficult to actually repair because

you have.

No blood flow to that end of the tissue
to try to bring together so that'll

bleed out a lot faster.

With the time it takes to swing the axe,
expose the Zulu warrior to a

counterattack. Take two warriors who are
equally skilled at cutting the other

guy down in mere moments, both of them
coming out as hard as they can. The one

who knows how to recover from that and
the one who knows how to defend.

I guarantee it. He's going to be the one
who's standing at the end of the

battle. A Zulu warrior isn't concerned
with it. He's not worried about

himself from his enemy when his enemy
has been decapitated.

It's impressive, but it's a lack of
strategy.

The strategy is barrier.

Damage is damage in my mind, and I did
see a fairly quick recovery there.

After crunching the numbers on the act
and Warhammer, our experts cannot deny

which has more killing power.

The Zulu axe is a multifunctional tool.
And you've got to go with the thing that

you can do more damage with, and you can
actually do some defense with it. So

I've got to go with the axe.

Short -range weapons.

Shaka Zulu takes the edge with his axe.

William Wallace has yet to reveal his
signature shield and dagger.

While the Zulu nation prepares to
release a weapon a Scotsman would never

imagine. Oh, sick.

continue to test their weapons to

I think what the Zulu are not expecting
from William Wallace is just instant

kill. We've got metal going in. We've
got big, heavy guys that are used to

taking a bit of a punishment.

Again, no competition.

The continent of Africa is always in a
state of flux. There's always a battle.

That's our daily ritual.

What do Zulus have to fear from William
Wallace?

For him to come in and think there's any
sense of intimidation is sheer

stupidity. Shaka Zulu relished hand -to
-hand combat, and the killing power of

his stabbing spear and Zulu axe has
stood up in our test.

But for close -quarter combat, William
Wallace carried a killer combination of

handheld weapons.

The tarsh, a Scottish shield with a
wicked 10 -inch spike.

And its deadly partner, the dirt, a
Scottish dagger designed to stab, slash

slay. The tarsh, the Scottish shield,
it's a laminated wooden shield covered

leather. Very nasty -looking spike in
the front.

The second line of attack.

With the Dirk, it's a very long -bladed
knife. Once you've deflected any initial

blow, you're straight in there for a
fatal swipe.

To test the killing power of the Taj and
Dirk, a fresh target.

Kieran, could you show me how you're
