undercover agent for the Immigration and

Naturalization Service, was shot and
seriously wounded on a Detroit pier.

Whitney was investigating the smuggling
of aliens into the United States by

organized crime elements in Detroit.

Because of a threat he posed,
professional killers were employed to

attached, is an unexplained shooting
near the terminal pier.

The victim was Ralph Latham, teacher and
basketball coach at Mission High

School. The shooting took place in the
terminal parking lot, and the assailant

was quickly apprehended by FBI agents.

Unexplained was the presence of federal
agents or the reason for the shooting.

Mr. Latham's condition has been
described as satisfactory by hospital
