In the late afternoon of August 9th, Paul Hale, the only son of prominent

Portland, Oregon businessman George Hale, came home to receive a special

delivery letter postmarked Kelso, Washington, threatening his father's

Inspector, state police have just located Hale's car near a deserted beach

75 miles out of Portland.

Apparently, he had been fishing when the kidnapper approached him.
