On the morning of December 9th, the
Farmers and Merchants Bank of

was robbed by a lone young gunman who
was described as calm and deadly. By the

time Inspector Lewis Erskine arrived at
the scene, the suspect had been

identified as U .S. Army Private Jerome
Williams, absent without leave for 22

days from Fort Harris, Colorado.

Ordered one of the tellers to put all
the bills in a bag. Then he made all the

employees and the patrons in the bank
line up.

Did he get in the vault? No. That's
what's odd, Inspector.

He only went to one teller.

It was almost as if he wanted an
audience.

How were you able to identify him so
quickly?

Mr. Edgars, the bank loan officer,
recognized Williams this morning.

Apparently, Williams came in here two
days ago trying to get a car loan.

Edgars went over the application but had
to turn it down, and he pulled the

application before I came here.

Williams claimed to be on leave, but I
called the Denver office and they found

out he was AWOL from Fort Harris.

They came up with his photo right away.

to get this out in a flyer along with
the description of the car he was

Yes, sir.

Was he alone the first time he came in
here?

Yes, and he was in uniform then.

This morning, he was wearing slacks, a
brown shirt, and carrying a blue jacket.

It wasn't until the loan application was
pulled that we realized he was a

soldier.

that Williams took after he left the

The bank was hit about 10 .07.

He was stopped by the roadblock at 1035,
which means he probably drove directly

through the Albuquerque Central District
and then swung onto Highway 40. And he

had two other people with him.

Yes, and they weren't with him when he
drove away from the bank.

So he must have picked them up somewhere
between here and the roadblock.

Any of you recognize this man?

What'd he do?

He's a suspect in a bank robbery that
took place a few hours ago.

He's armed, and we think he has two
other people with him.

Well, he did pick up Mary Ann and some
kind of lonesome cowboy type this

morning.

Do you know Mary Ann's last name or
where she's from?

I'm pretty sure it's Collins.

And I know she comes from Omaha.

He's big and tall and blonde.

Agents have interviewed William's
commanding officer at Fort Harris.

They're sending a teletype summary of
William's 201 file.

What did his CO have to say about him?

No court -martials, no record of
violence, but he seems to have been kind

misfit.

We can hitch a ride in one of those

lived there until he volunteered for the

Army. His parents died in a fire. He was
about two years old. He has an older

brother, Joseph.

No. Not since he was separated from the
service in 1968.

Military service records couldn't be
more different.

Joseph Williams was considered to be a
resourceful, aggressive soldier.

Won several battlefield promotions and
commendations.

Is there an address on the brother in
Williams' army file?

No, and Jerry Williams' file is pretty
sad.

It was at the bottom of his class in the
training company.

Lacked initiative.

Company punishments for minor
infractions and finally AWOL.

I'm sure young Davis is going to make an
inspector. His condition is much

But I'm carrying him as critical for the
time being. He's in the recovery room

I was nothing.

couple closely resembling Williams and

Collins girl get into a car driven by a
lone driver.

This is Inspector Erskine.

Anything in the report on the
circumstances?

The girl was apparently out on the road,
Inspector. The car was pulling over.

She then waited while the man who may be
Williams came from off the road.

By the time the motorist passed them,
both were in the car.

victim up this time.

However, I have recently observed three
males accompanied by one female at

intersection of 84 and the Amarquez Cut
-Off.

Females generally fit at the description
of Mary Ann Collins.

How are they traveling?

By motorcycle, sir.

Jerome Williams was tried and convicted
in federal court of bank robbery.

He was turned over to New Mexico
authorities and found guilty of

murder. He was subsequently tried in an
Arizona court for aggravated assault and

robbery. Miles and his confederates were
found guilty of assaulting federal

officers.
