The death of Indian attorney George
Fisher on the Alamak Reservation in

Arizona was to bring a number of long
-standing conflicts between the white

red men of the area into sudden, sharp
focus.

Within hours, vandalism had been
reported on both sides.

And in Flagstaff, FBI resident agent
Edgar Putnam, sensing a potentially

explosive situation, had asked Bureau
headquarters in Washington for

The coroner's holding the autopsy now in
Alamak.

Little town on the edge of the
reservation.

What's the main cause of friction here,
Ed?

Well, the basic fight seems to be
whether or not progress in terms of more

a higher standard of living, is right
for the tribe or not.

Some of the Indians don't want the white
man's version of progress. They think

we've made a mess of it.

They just want to be left alone. They
feel that their own ways are better for

them.

Now, the man who was killed felt
differently.

He was an attorney, you said?

Right. married to the chief's daughter,
one child, a little boy two years old.

Was he popular with the tribe?

Well, I talked to the Indian agent about
that, and he said that Fisher had been

very popular, but that he had made a lot
of the young militants mad by his

conciliatory attitude toward Holman and
company.

That's the mining syndicate?

I still don't think I quite understand
it.

Is the tribe afraid the company is going
to build on reservation land or what?

Well, that's part of it.

The reservation boundaries have always
been in dispute.

The company's running its own survey
right now, as a matter of fact.

But, you see, a lot of the young Indian

bound to pollute the river no matter
where the smelter is built.

And, of course, if this is true, that
would mean the end of the tribe's

Now, the company to counteract that has
promised to put in a sewage purifier,

but a lot of the young braves still
object.

They simply don't want that smelter in
there at all.

It is, believe me.

The company feels that George Fisher's
own people probably killed him.

The tribe seems to believe the company
was behind it. But both sides are

convinced it was murder.

He's made trouble before on the
reservation.

He was picked up about a year ago on an
assault charge.

riots for assaulting a federal officer.

Damage claims arising from the riot in
