The discovery of the body of Sheriff
Sergeant Joseph Houston was quickly

to the escape of three inmates from the
hospital ward of the nearby state prison

at Western Bend.

Within hours, reports had reached FBI
headquarters in Washington that two of

fugitives had been seen in Denver, a
third in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and state

authorities requested FBI assistance
under the unlawful flight statute.

What was Spain doing in the hospital?

Surely he wasn't assigned there, too.
