violent death.

A Coast Guard Marine Board of Inquiry
convened in Honolulu to investigate what

seemed like an unfortunate accident.

What neither the board nor her owner,
Captain Benjamin Jennerson, knew was

information received by the FBI in
Washington raised the possibility that

sinking might have been deliberate.

and that the death of Chief Engineer
Michael Smith, Jennison's friend of 20

years, might have been murder.

Mr. Locu, was it unusual for Captain
Jennison to ignore items of waste in the

path of his ship?

the part of the ship's personnel.

in a commendable manner and in

Most of these islands were protected by
minefields of some sort.

Over the years, the individual mines
break away.

Every so often, the Navy finds one or
two in the lanes of heavy traffic. They

blow them up.

Warren, I understand the Coast Guard
divers are still going out every day.

The Kalana Princess was carrying
cylinders of chlorine in one of her

They've kept it quiet to avoid public
panic.

Well, is there any danger at this point?

So far, the divers have determined that
the cylinders are intact.

But if that chlorine should escape,
mixed with water, it becomes the same

poisonous gas used in World War I, and
with a high wind to spread it.

Well, it matches the sample of Japanese

The analysis shows considerable erosion
in both layers.

From the salt water and the tides? No,
sir. Neither coating shows any evidence

of exposure to ocean water.

Well, it is an underwater mine.

What about the third layer?

Well, now, that's the interesting part.

A sample analysis indicates that the
final coating was probably developed and

marketed by an American firm.

You see, it's a protective paint.

one which forms up one of the newer
synthetic plastics.

It wasn't marketed until, oh, the late
50s in the United States.

Can you tell how long it was in the
water?

Well, not the specific length of time,
but due to the general appearance of the

paint, it's reasonable to assume that
the mine wasn't subjected to those

conditions for very long. How long?

Less than a year? Oh, no, less than a
month.

I couldn't possibly have drifted away
from a World War II field.
