Been working on your jumper.

Yeah. So what have you been working on?

Just looking out for the future.

Whose future, Gordon?

Stanley.

He didn't take something from our room.

I'm giving it back.

I need that money, little brother.

I went to Graves.

It's my last chance.

But this is my chance, Gordon.

And you can't sell it away, man.

He just can't.

Look, man.

Look at all the moms.

The cops.

Look, man, you don't understand.

I got a solution to this problem.

You're holding it.

Hate to see trouble in a family.

Hey, Toby, Mr.

Hines, I'm glad you're here.

V8 and me are just discussing that letter of intent.

I want to see you alone, Hines.

Sure.

Now, what can be bothering the man of the hour?

You can't be nervous about the city championship.

You got the home court advantage.

$10 ,000.

It's all there.

Gordon came to me, V8.

We try to do what we can to help out families of underprivileged incoming

freshmen. Look, man!

I'm not underprivileged, and neither is my family.

I'm not an incoming freshman at Cayuga University.

Do you understand?

No problem.

No problem.

Must be cool.

We use this? No, that's for official police business.

That's kind of official. We're going to miss the first right. Put that down!

Did you bring us crayons?

No. Did you bring the church club passes?

Oh, of course, you didn't bring the passes because you left them on the

I brought the passes.

I knew you'd get them.

Listen, town, I want to get a bed down at Daily Double. There's a place up here

about five blocks down. Just turn right for the next line. Let me ask you

something. Is this the kind of place I might have to arrest myself?

Not if you don't go in.

Can you use this, town? No, put it down.

187, 187, at Canyon Heights.

All units, please respond.

187, that's a homicide.

This is Unit 67A, Lieutenant Brown. I'm near the vicinity. We'll respond.

So much for a day at the races.

You can use the light now.

Here at Canyon High School, officials were shocked by the discovery of a

victim after the close of school today.

The victim has been identified as Toby Hines, a prominent local insurance

executive. well known for his support of the basketball program at CU.

The body was found by students under a stairwell here at the high school gym.

Police Captain J .C. Hacker has told me that he does have a suspect in custody,

although no charges have been filed as yet.

There'll be an update tonight at 11. This is Temple Hill, Channel 3 News.

Thanks.

How'd you get here before I did? Hacker called me. I took the station

helicopter.

Hacker or his press agent?

Hacker is a public servant who likes the public to know what's going on.

As long as he's in focus.

Yeah, and don't shoot him from the left side.

Shoot three.

Lieutenant, Captain Hacker's upstairs.

Oh, great.

remain silent.

You're not the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used

against you. Well, if it isn't the rat pack.

Is that your suspect?

Yeah.

Ironic, isn't it?

Stanley Tate.

V .A. Tate?

Funny thing happened on the way to the final four.

Nines was a recruiter. I guess he was pushing a little too hard.

Can I see you a minute?

Would you mind getting your boots off the hardwood?

Why, is it yours?

Matter of fact, it is.

Coach Edison.

Oh, hi. Rick Simon. He's my brother. AJ. How are you? Let me lay it out for you

downtown.

That's what your friends call you, isn't it?

We don't know each other.

But I know your reputation in the department. You're a good cop.

But you have the tendency to slide across the lines when it pleases you. A

little bunco today, a little burglar tomorrow.

What we have here is a homicide.

Clean as a hole through Mr. Hines over there.

We don't need you, Brown. I was just responding to a radio call, Captain.

I was going to turn this over to Homicide anyway.

I know you were.

Just so we understand each other.

Oh, we understand each other. Besides, this case would only mean trouble for

you. I mean,

the main squeeze is covering it.

The suspect is, well, one of your people.

Your objectivity might be questioned.

Not by me, of course.

A guy like Hacker pulls some strings and you jump.

What are you talking about?

I'm here to cover a news story. That's what I do, you know.

Quench the fire, buy you a beer or something?

Everybody wants me off this case. Funny thing is, I wasn't even on it.

They shouldn't have poked the bear.

Let me ask you guys something. Can I afford you?

Evening, Blade. What's shaking tonight?

Nothing but you.

Thought you were over your legal limit this week. What, are you poaching again?

Funny. You keep drinking that stuff and you end up on the wrong side of the

drawer. Hey, Brown, no time for comedy tonight.

I'll strip him, rip him, and drain him. Come back in a half a cheeseburger,

maybe we can tell you what train he left on. Forget it. I'm going to save you

the trouble.

What the hell are you talking about? He's still warm.

Gentlemen, the federal government finds very little humor in a freshly murdered

individual.

Lieutenant, can we proceed with this, or am I going to have to wake the mayor?

Sorry, sir, I'll clear this matter right up. There is no need to upset the 12th

floor tonight.

Meekin here is one of the best. Really?

Meekin.

Is that with an A or with an E?

A.

What the hell is this all about? Who is that jerk?

A very big jerk, a federal jerk. And I've been told to give this guy whatever

wants, and right now he wants to be left alone.

Yes, sir.

I'm going to go out for a long smoke.

Two things.

I don't want to know what this guy does.

Whatever he does, I don't want him using my tools.

Lieutenant Brown, I want you to get rid of Mr.

Meekin with an A.

Then I want you to get me the Federal Disease Control Center in Atlanta.

And then I want you to go out and buy yourself a large bottle of amnesia.

No, it wasn't burglary.

This guy was nearsighted.

Yeah, we ought to do this more often.

What, pill for a morgue?

No, bring along another guy. Works much faster with the three of us.

Oh, thanks for reminding me. When we total up the bill, don't forget the fee

the additional hands.

It's all in the hands, boys.

Hines withdrew $10 ,000 from the bank today.

And then he went to see V8 a few hours later.

Looks like he took the money straight to him.

Hi, Mr. Tate.

I'm A .J. Simon. This is my brother Rick. Hi.

We're private investigators.

We'd like word with your son. We understand he was released by the police

morning. Private investigator?

Yes, ma 'am. Who are you working for?

Um... Uh... Well, let's just say an interested party.

Interested in what?

In seeing that Stanley gets a fair shake.

Is some recruiter paying you? No, ma 'am. When we accepted this case, we

to maintain the confidentiality of the individual, but believe me, we're all on

the same team.

Mister, I'm not on any team.

I'm in a family.

And right now, this family isn't talking to anybody.

Miss Tate, the individual that we're working for is very concerned about your

son.

We'd like to help, and we think you need it.

If you change your mind, would you please call us?

Just a minute.

Stanley didn't kill anybody.

You know who did, Stanley?

No.

What were you arguing with Hines about?

We weren't arguing.

We were just... talking.

Half a dozen witnesses saw you push him into the bleachers.

You want to tell us about the $10 ,000?

What $10 ,000?

You don't know?

I don't know anything.

I told it to the cops a hundred times last night.

Really tight.

He's not telling us everything.

I thought you were on our side.

You're right.

I know him too well.

Mrs. Tate, there could be a lot of reasons that he's lying. He could be

threatened. He could be covering for somebody. It doesn't mean he's a killer.

The thing that matters now is the odds.

They're against me. They always have been.

I raised those two boys by myself.

Every time it seemed like we could see a little sunlight, somebody would run in

the clouds again.

Stanley really loved basketball.

But I'll tell you what I love. That round ball is going to see him get into

college. And then into medical school.

And I'm going to make sure of that.

Anything or anybody that gets in his way, they're going to deal with me.

And you can tell that to your interested party.

and find him, Rallo.

Hands up, please.

Well, Mr. Graves would really like to see him.

Well, I can't help you.

Well, then you better give him a message from us.

Get your hands off me, man.

What's your problem?

You sure you never saw them before?

Must have been from guys from North Hills.

Trying to rattle me.

I'm okay.

Why don't you go see the nurse anyway?

I'll clear with the coach.

Over here! Over here!

Yes,

sir, we were the first school in Texas to actively recruit in Africa.

Back at you, boy.

I go around seven five.

Now you want to talk about intimidation.

What school did you say you were from?

Hard knock, son. Hard knock. Never did actually go to college.

A ball boy.

Now I'm buying me some round ballers to go to that nice new gymnasium we built

last summer.

Including V8 tape.

I'll take a number.

Because right now the cops have number one. I hear he didn't do it.

VA Tate stole the Statue of Liberty, and I saw it sticking out of his pocket.

I'd sign him to a four -year grant in A right on the bail receipt.

All I can tell you is it looked like he was in real trouble. No kid stuff

either. Anything to explain why he's not being straight with us? Checked his

locker. Nothing unusual.

Looks like just about all the top colleges are accounted for.

V8 really got them coming out of the woodwork.

A lot of the recruiters were in town last night.

I didn't notice any of them weeping over Toby Hines.

Now, wait a minute. Doc, this isn't your case.

Well, I reckon this fella Hines figured he was worth going to the trouble for.

I understand he was willing to put up half his insurance company to get V8 to

sign with the youth.

He's tough.

We're offering scholarships and an occasional free meal.

He was putting hard cash on the table.

Well, you kind of got to forgive the enthusiasm of the amateur.

Now, to you, this is a business, but fellas like me and Hines, it's just kind

a hobby.

So I guess if you fellas want a shot at Tate, you're going to have to kill me,

too.

What the hell are you talking about?

Well, there's a lot online here.

Games on network TV.

Alumni support.

Awful lot of bread for a school that gets a blue -chip player.

And I would imagine that there's a lot for the man that can land a fish that

size.

Sounds to me like it might be worth killing for.

Look, I don't know who you are, Tex.

We're legitimate recruiters. Nobody here killed Heinz. All right, all right, all

right. Just checking to see me up.

Trying to make a boring game a little more interesting, you know what I mean?

Seeking payoffs.

Gordon Tate? Down!

Got a new player in the game.

V8's brother.

What if the 10 ,000 went to Gordon Tate instead of Stanley?

V8 could be covering for him.

Or maybe they're both involved.

But why the threat to V8 today?

Beats me.

Why don't you stay on top of V8?

See what happens.

Thank you for not littering.

The G and the Q sometimes look a little bit alike.

See?

When I was their age, my mother made it a part of my chores every night to read

out loud.

Me?

I wanted to be outside, playing basketball.

Well, you're lucky to have a mother like that.

I know a few college ball players who could barely read and write.

Yeah, give me a hand.

Whoa,

this is for kids?

Yeah.

I guess I'm just trying to get the kids at the center off to a good start.

Thank you.

I come around about, oh, twice a week.

It means a lot to them.

I guess you could say I'm kind of... kind of, um, you know.

Yeah. You're the neighborhood hero, V8.

But right now, you must be living the worst nightmare you've ever dreamed.

You're not really a coach, are you?

No.

Hmm.

I guess I should have realized.

The locker today.

Coach Edison now?

Yeah. And he's your friend. And starting right now, I am too.

Well, that means that I did it.

You wouldn't arrest me, right?

You know better than that.

It doesn't matter.

I didn't kill him anyway.

Well, that makes it a hell of a lot easier for me to help you.

Now, I don't know everything, but I know that Gordon was looking for a payoff.

I know that Toby Hines had $10 ,000 on the day he was killed.

Now you fill me on the rest, and I'll be as fair with him as I am with you.

But we gotta save you first.

I think my brother killed Toby Hines.

Gordon told Hines he could get me to sign up at CU.

He was in the gym when I gave him money back.

And when Hines' body was discovered, the money was gone.

You think your brother killed him and stole back the money?

Stanley Tate, you ought to be ashamed of yourself.

Here I am telling these people how I raised you boys in a good, loving

And you standing there telling me that you think your brother is a murderer.

Well, I didn't raise any murderers.

Not you and not Gordon.

Excuse me.

Does anybody know where Gordon has been since last night? Have you called?

Be an example, Gordon.

An example of what happens to people who play and don't pay.

Mr. Grayson, you know I'm good for it. Look, I had a deal.

And then it fell through.

If you give me another week, give me another week.

Two weeks?

Two weeks is a long time to wait for $10 ,000.

Now think about it.

Ice has been after Grayson's number one boy, Rollo, for a year. Almost sure to

be undercover cops working the club.

If they see me walk in there, hacker, I have my bars nailed to the wall.

Well, I'm going alone.

You guys go into that club alone, they'll mail you back in a plain brown

envelope.

Do you have any better ideas?

Check your mailbox in the morning.

Why don't you go make some arrangements for his future?

Call us when you're ready.

Right.

Be a draft.

I couldn't go in the back and change my thoughts if a guy comes in here looking

for Ernie.

Got you.

Looking for a guy named Ernie. Has he been in here?

Uh, yeah.

He's in the men's room.

this town taking bets.

I don't know you.

Then you don't know everybody, Mr. Gray.

I think I can get the money tonight.

Just save it, Tate.

Come on, great.

If I forget the basement loaded against you, I'm just warming up in the bullpen.

Another would -be relief man.

Later.

Long live.

It's been a pleasure.

Hey. Maybe we can help each other out on a common problem.

Both looking for Gordon Tate.

Find him twice as fast if we both look together.

Thanks.

I don't need any help with Gordon Tate.

And don't bring your problems to my place again.

She doesn't need any help. I think I know why.

Pull it.

I'll take him with us.

Come on, Gordon. We're working for your family. Let's go. Come on. Move it. Move

it. Move.

All right.

We know there are undercover cops in here.

Do you identify yourself?

We could be wrong.

I didn't do it.

I didn't take no money.

I didn't kill Toby Hines.

I left the school right after I saw him with my little brother.

You knew your brother was going through hell covering for you. Why didn't you

come forward? I would have.

I was scared.

He grays me. He's got eyes all over Tom, man. He's ready to kill me.

I never meant to get Stanley in no trouble.

You shouldn't have come, Mama.

Maybe next time I won't, son.

Hell, I won't.

I'm sorry, Mom.

It's all right, son.

We'll straighten it out.

Man, everybody wanted a piece of you. I was no different.

You didn't have to apologize to me.

Bro?

Yeah, I'll make it up to you, little brother.

I swear I will.

You better.

Or you'll have to answer to me.

by your personal investigators, Lieutenant. We're booking him anyway.

Book him.

You're under arrest for the murder of Toby Hines.

You have the right to remain silent.

Give up that right.

Anything to say?

Ladies and gentlemen, any statement I might make at this time could

conceivably encroach upon the suspect's rights.

However, I've always respected the public's right to the truth.

My office will have a statement at the earliest possible time.

Is he charged with counsel?

He's on his way.

I'm sorry, ma 'am. I've got to take him now.

Hey, hey, hey!

Was

it

really necessary to bring in the press, sir?

Catching killers is news, Lieutenant.

You're to be congratulated.

That's why you're booking him, isn't it?

You got him so hungry for an arrest, you'll take anybody.

You don't have enough evidence to convict.

Several recruiters have told us that Gordon Tate was ready to sell his

to the highest bidder.

And there's evidence to suggest that Toby Hines was willing to bid $10 ,000

down payment.

We already know that, sir.

And I still don't believe that Gordon killed him. Lieutenant, you seem to be

willing to catch them with this hand and let them go with this one.

If Gordon killed Hines and stole the money, he'd have paid off the guys who

trying to kill him last night.

Trying to kill him?

I have 15 witnesses who say you two broke down an office store where Gordon

was having a business meeting with Graves and took Tate out against his

was being held in a chair by a gorilla.

Leo Graves is willing to testify that a few minutes before your untimely

arrival, Gordon Tate paid him $10 ,000.

I don't believe that.

Graves would be incriminating himself.

You gave him immunity.

Was it Graves' way of settling Gordon's debt?

It really is subtle, too.

Unless we can find somebody else with a motive and opportunity for killing

Hines.

Mr. Hines doesn't need any water. We got our orders, lady, and he's on the roof.

He's no longer with us.

You don't understand. He's dead.

He may be dead. He didn't cancel his water.

Excuse me. One side here. You can't go in there. No, thank you. Excuse me.

Excuse me.

Oh, Barney, you're leaking.

Well, stop it. Lock it up. Okay, okay. Here, here, here.

Hold that. Hold that. Okay.

Let's just put it down.

a little gambling problem of his own.

Excuse me.

You, Rollo?

Who wants to know?

I'd have to accept that as a yes, wouldn't you? I think that's a safe

assumption, yes.

What is this?

Step into our office, Rollo.

Mr. Cantrell is waiting.

Who? You don't remember an important gentleman like Mr. Cantrell from Newark,

New Jersey?

Gettleness is the first sign of old age, Rollo.

And one day you just wake up dead.

Who are you?

You won't be needing that on this trip, Rallo.

After you, please.

eating this Cantrell guy here?

Mr. Cantrell is already with us.

Are you ready, sir?

Ask him about the game.

Yes, sir.

Mr. Cantrell wants to know what went wrong with his CU game.

Which game? The game that Leo Graves told him to bet on.

I don't know nothing about this.

Mr. Cantrell lost $100 ,000 on that game, Robert.

Ask him about Toby Haynes.

Yes, sir.

Leo Graves told us that he had a personal relationship with Toby Hines

the point spread had been worked out.

I don't know nothing about this, but I'll tell you one thing.

We already squared it for you.

You heard how Hines was blasted a few days ago?

Can you hear me?

I can hear you.

Yeah, well, that was us. He owed Graves a lot of money.

I didn't know it had anything to do with you, Mr. Cantrell.

Now I do.

You took care of the contract?

I took care of it myself.

You wouldn't just be saying that to brag, would you?

I don't take credit for nothing I don't do.

I'm strictly a pro.

I'm glad to hear that.

Would you like to handle this personally, sir?

Come on, guys.

If you don't believe me, ask Graves. He'll be at the city championship all

afternoon.

You're under arrest, Rollo.

V8, you surprised a lot of us by not going with one of the top ten.

It's not a basketball power, but it's a good school.

And I'm glad I'm getting a chance to be there.

How do you feel about your son's decision, Mrs. Tate?

How do you think I feel?

I'm damn proud.

It goes to show that the system works.

But the system didn't work in this case, Captain.

Isn't it true that this worked out solely because of the efforts of one

Lieutenant Brown, whom you threw off the case?

Lieutenant Downtown Brown, while others were eager to convict, you were

convinced that V .A. Tate was innocent.

Well, that's my job.

But I couldn't have done it without the help of a couple of private citizens.

One more question, Lieutenant Brown.

Can we have dinner tonight?
