We're right now standing in front of the Trivandrum Press Club.
All three major political parties in Kerala...
are holding a joint press conference, which means it's something important.
It's the first time in the history of Kerala that...
the ruling party, opposition and the third front are holding a joint press meet.
What could be the reason?
This is Maria.
After completing her bachelor's in nursing, she was getting ready to fly to the UK.
But she had to get married out of the blue.
The groom is Roy.
Where's the groom? Ask him to come quickly.
Aren't there a lot of girls in this world?
If anyone asked him why he still chose to marry Maria...
Roy had only one answer to say.
Because it was someone else he loved and wished to get married.
Roy!
She was the girl he loved with all his heart and wished to marry.
His one and only Annakutty.

That's what I have been saying. They won't move legally.
Let's try to solve this somehow.
Didn't we talk to the advocate about that?
And we'll be meeting Perumpally soon. Everything will end with that.
Then why should I stay here?
Brother, let's proceed like this.
We can deal with him later.
Trust me.
Bro, good morning.
Sorry, father.. I mean brother.
You can call me bro.

Okay.
Father, please listen to me.
Well, our Annakutty...
Which Annakutty?
-Oh, yes! Annakutty? -She's here.
Where?
She's here nearby.
I was planning to take you and Tony there after two days.
Now that you're leaving...
Oh, I forgot to tell you something.
She had come for today's mass.
You could have met her then.
Then where's she?
She must have left.
Why didn’t you...
I'm a priest.
Why didn’t you tell me this earlier, Father?
Mud again.
It's because of that day's goddamn rain and slush that..
I lost my Annakutty.
-Of course. -What?
I’m sure she’s sad about it too.
I wonder how her husband is.
Whatever he’s like, she has to tolerate him.
She must be adjusting somehow. Poor girl.
Come inside.
Let's go?
We'll never run out of our old stories, right?
It's been only one month since we moved over here.
That's when I got to know that Father Micheal is here.
-Rony...-Yes?
Didn't she say Roy?
No, this is Rony.
Roy, you look so different.
You've gained some weight, with a bit of a pot belly.

Hi!
-Father, how are you? -I'm good.
This is my husband, Rony.
Hello...
Hey, I have told you about him.
-Roy from Kattapana. -Oh, yes. I know.
You know what, Father.
I sometimes tell Rony..
If it hadn't been for that day’s rain and slush...
I'd have been stuck with him!
Father, have tea.
Have it, son.
Actually, I have also slapped an SI. And that was at the station.
But things have changed now.
There was no computer or internet back then.
But that won't do now. It will blow up.
Vipin, it was a mistake.
He's planning to go abroad.
That's good.
That SI's son is also planning to go abroad.
And that guy is also a troublemaker like him. Oh God!
I didn't mean you're a troublemaker.
I’ve taken care of a couple of his other issues.
I'm focusing on that route these days.
Hello, Perumpally.
That boy is there with me.
Sir, they didn’t mean to do it.
That boy is ready to apologize.
I spoke to my brother-in-law about it.
My nephew is also planning to go abroad. That's why we're not moving legally.
Just do like I said.
Tell him we won't forget it just like that.
We can talk about it later. I will meet you in the evening.
Okay, bye.
He doesn't have to apologize. I'll handle the rest.
You go out.
No, Father.
I didn't help you expecting this.
Just because you said I intervened.
It's not our party that is in power. So don't misunderstand me.
Father, send him abroad at the earliest.
If the SI's son goes abroad, and he stays here....
You know how the police are, right?
Don't worry. Just give me a call if there's anything.
I'll deal with it.
You should go to Chennai tomorrow.
Go meet Mathews.
I'll go after two days, Father...
Why wait for two days?
Go tomorrow. Don't delay it further.
Father...
I won't be able to go.
Where?
Anywhere.
Means?
Father, I want to do something here.
I won't be able to stay away from my dad.
Really?
Let me make something clear.
It's for you that your father is struggling like this.
And now... you don't want to go!
-Father, I... -What the hell will you do here? Huh?
Please listen to me first.
If I could start some business...
What business?
Your dad told me about your business.
Is that what you're planning to do?
Do you know why your father is running around like this?
When your mom called him to the UK...
He didn't go.
Don't say anything more.
You're 25.
If you still can't decide for yourself, it's better you keep quiet.
Just listen to what I say.
Go to Chennai tomorrow itself.
Take Paulson brother with you.
Start the car.
Got it, sir.
Okay, good.
I will check and let you know about the university.
It's packed with students there now.
-You have friends there? -No, sir.
Then?
Cousins?
No...
Usually it's the ones who are already there encourage others to migrate.
But there's no use in going.
I think about it often.
It's sad that children of your age are not thinking about the opportunities available here.
Relocating to a foreign country now is not like it was in the past.
Maybe it's hard for you to digest.
I was your age when I went abroad.
I wasn't interested.
There was a lot of pressure from my family.
It was as if I was in a pressure cooker.
I made a lot of money.
But I lost my sleep.
Then...
whenever I came back home, I felt better.
Now, that's also gone.
I had no other choice but to settle down there.
Now even when I come here...
Have tea.
Oh God!
Well, sir... Tony isn't interested to go abroad.
What?
Sir, I've got only my father.
It's his biggest wish to send me abroad for studies and get me settled there.
It's because I wasn't interested in going, I didn't clear IELTS all this time.
But now I had to clear the test for my dad.
Now, I have no other choice but to go.
I'm talking from my experience.
I can understand your dad's emotions.
But isn't it fun to be here?
This freedom...
Our parents... relatives...
Hanging out with friends...
Drinking and enjoying with them...
Picking up fights...
Where are you going leaving all this?
I fell into the trap.
Sir, I told Father Micheal that I don't want to go.
Then?
He asked me what I was planning to do here.
Then he scolded me.
I didn't have an answer back then.
Our life's decision-maker should always be us.
Or else you'll have to listen to your parents like me...
do a job that you don't like and spend all your life making money.
Finally, when you die, you'll get to take rest.
That's what rest in peace is.
Okay then.
Take it.
I'll talk to Father Micheal.
Tony!
[train announcement]
Father, I want to talk to you.
Even if my dad threatens to die, I won't go anywhere.
I want to live here!
The way I want!
If I go abroad for my dad, every minute I spend there
will turn my love for him into hatred.
I don't want to live like that.
This is my life.
I'm old enough to make decisions.
And...
I didn't have an answer to your question that day.
But I have a clear answer today.
But...
I want someone to understand me. Please.
-Hello Father... -Annakutty...
I want to see you.
What's the matter, father?
I'll tell you that in person.
Okay, we can meet.
Why didn't he tell this to Roy earlier?
He struggled a lot to get the loan.
Now when everything is ready...
I can't say this to him.
Father, why are you forcing him?
Don't send him if he's not interested.
What does Roy get from forcing him to go?
Annakutty, you have no idea about this.
Roy has been behind this for some time now.
If we tell him now that Tony doesn't want to go...
Anyway, you talk to him.
Try to convince him somehow.
Annakutty, what do you want?
Tea or coffee?
Anything will do.
Hey, get us two cups of tea.
Now tell me.
Why did you want to meet me?
-Roy... -Yes?
We should be the ones to decide what we want in our life.
That's the best way to live, right?
Annakutty...
I'm also upset about it.
This wasn't chosen by us.
All that...
just happened.
There's no point in feeling sad about it now.
Just try to adjust to this life.
Why are you laughing?
Oh God!
I was talking about Tony.
What happened to him?
Well...
He doesn't want to go abroad.
Don't want to go?
He wishes to do something here.
It's without any interest that he studied all these years for you.
And it's for you that he passed the test this time.
Not just that...
I'll send him abroad.
If something happens to me, he shouldn't be alone.
That's all.
I want to send him there.
When you show your emotions and ego on him...
it's his dreams that you are destroying.
If he wants to live here, let him do that.
Why didn't you go when Maria called you to the UK?
Because you wanted to live here.
Stand by him to fulfill his dreams.
If he ever feels like seeing his mother, let him visit her then.
Annakutty...
Don't think that I'm disregarding you.
That will make me sad.
I've been seeing him for 26 years.
I can't believe my son had to seek a third person's help to communicate with me.
I didn't realise that he's past the age where he would obey my decisions.
Hello...
Hello...
It's me, Maria.
Annakutty had called me.
Tony is old enough to make his own decisions.
I had wanted to call him many times to get to know him.
But I didn't do it because I thought that would hurt you.
I don't know why I'm calling you now, but...
If his dreams are something we can help him achieve...
I have the right to be a part of it, right?
Roy, hope you both are fine.
Roy, please keep the phone in front of your face.
Roy, that phone...
Please...
Okay.
Bye.
His mother just called me.
-Who? Maria? -Yes.
Tony was a baby when she left us.
I begged her to come back, but she didn't do it.
Yes, we need money to live.
When she had made enough money she invited us to the UK.
How could I leave my sick mother and go?
I know about it.
I was just saying.
Gradually, she stopped calling.
She got married to someone there.
I never complained about this to anyone.
I will never do that.
"Her son!"
Even though I raised him, now I've become the father who's going against his wishes.
Let it be so.
I felt relieved to know that...
he would have his mom and siblings if something were to happen to me.
That's why I decided to send him there.
I'll let him do whatever he wants.
Sit there.
What mistake did I do, Father?
Anna aunty...
Dad...
They are my classmates from the IELTS center.
They also wish to do something here like me.
Before going to Chennai, I had told Father that I don't want to go abroad...
and that I want to stay here with my dad and do something.
Hearing this, Father asked me a lot of questions.
I didn't have the answers to those questions back then.
But...
that trip gave me the answers to all those questions.
Sir, can you please hold this?
Tony!
If you've no plans to go abroad...
start observing the things around you seriously.
You'll get ideas then.
Be happy, Tony!
-Sumathy, hang that garland on that hook. -Okay.
Kerala is a state that has a climate well-suited for floriculture.
Especially districts like Idukki and Wayanad.
Flowers like chrysanthemum, jasmine, rose, jungle geranium, tulsi...
are the kind that's most used in temples.
Yearly, around 3 million flowers are used in temples alone.
And these flowers are coming from places like Thovala, Shankaran Kovil...
Madhurai and Salem.
These flowers are bought from regular farmers at around 80 rupees through bidding by mediators.
And it's sold in our state to retailers at a margin of nearly 80%.
So we can avoid such profiteering by cultivating flowers in our state.
There are a lot of options for such things over here.
But the sad part is that no one is even ready to give it a try.
And those who wish to do it are not getting any support.
I know someone who has done the same and inspired me to do this.
It's no one else.
Vinu's brother, Aniyan Chettan.
I visit them often.
After doing engineering and marrying the girl he loved...
he's successfully living the life he wished for happily.
By doing horticulture.
When I go stay with them...
I get a positive energy.
So dad...
I wish to do floriculture.

Who's its owner?

Just a minute. He'll come now.
What’s the issue, sir?
We got a complaint that you've encroached on government land.
Encroached?
Sir, there has to be some mistake.
This land's owner's name is Murali.
We took it for lease.
That doesn't matter to us.
Since there's a complaint, you can't do anything without taking a clearance certificate.
But sir, how can you say so?
Wait, please talk to the owner.

That's why I had to do this.
I want to meet the CM somehow.
Till then...
I'll continue with my protest.
Hello sir...
-Whats the update?-Sir, he'll be arrested in 10 minutes.
-No need. -Sir, our team is almost there.
It's not needed. I don't have any complaints.
Sir...
Don't take any action for the time being.
-Stephen.. -Yes, sir.
-Don't arrest him. -Okay, sir.
Don't you know you'll be arrested if you do such nonsense?
Then what am I supposed to do, sir?
If common men are not able to live here peacefully...
then what should we do?
What will I do if the entire population of Kerala starts doing this?
What's your complaint?
It's because I didn't have any interest in going abroad...
I started a venture here by putting in so much effort.
But the things my friends and I had to face...
We received a complaint regarding this land.
-I'll help you out. -We got a notice from the village office.
Get up!
It's the party!
We will have to pay them.
You've got any ganja?
We'll only decide the things here.
You might not be aware of such problems.
More than this...
there is something else that you should know.
Sir, how old is your daughter?
23.
She is also 23.
My name is Jyothy.
I'm from Pathanamthitta.
My family consists of my parents and my younger sister.
I was in the UK.
I had taken PSC exams until 2 years ago.
I even cleared it.
My family was so happy that day.
I saw my parents beaming with joy for the first time.
It was my dad's dream that I get a government job.
He distributed sweets to our neighbours.
Everyone had a lot of expectations.
Later, when we enquired about the job,
they said that position has no vacancy.
When we asked the reason, they didn't give us a clear answer.
I wrote PSC tests again.
I got selected this time too.
But I didn't get the job again.
Finally, I gave up my dream of getting a government job.
Later, my uncle suggested that I try going abroad.
When we inquired at a nearby agency, they said I don't need to write IELTS...
I just have to go there and study.
Then I'll get a job with a high salary.
For that they asked us for 30 lakh rupees.
That amount was beyond our means.
Yet...
By taking loans from banks and borrowing money from people...
my parents managed to arrange the money.
For me.
And I went to the UK.
Filled with hope.
But I was just one among a million people.
The situation there was different from what the agency portrayed.
I had to work in many supermarkets and hotels.
By doing the dishes and cleaning the toilets, I lived there somehow.
Forget my expense.
There was no point in staying there if I couldn’t send money to my parents every month.
I couldn't study. I went to the university only for one week.
Because of my mental and physical state....
I couldn't study anything.
If people on student visas work beyond the permitted hours...
the labour security will deport them.
I somehow managed to escape without getting caught many times.
But...
they caught me the last time.
And they sent me back to India.
But I haven't gone home.
I'm in Mumbai now.
The job I do here...
I...
I'm ashamed to say it.
I'm ending this.
I'm going to end everything.
I'm not doing this video to blame anyone.
But...
this is for the people who set out abroad with big dreams.
I've got only one thing to tell them.
There are many people who went there long ago and made it big.
But now...
it's filled with people like me.
I wish...
I wish I could work in my country.
My father...
My mother...

More than 3 lakh students from Kerala go abroad each year.
We could have utilized their knowledge and skills for our country.
When you go for an election campaign...
there will be thousands of party workers behind you.
How many of them are below the age of 40?
Have you ever thought about how things would be after your time?
Still, there are many who trust you.
They might not attend your party meetings or shout slogans for you.
But it's because of the votes from such people that...
the ministers and MLA's are sitting on their chairs right now.
Don't turn a blind eye to it, at least now.
This year, 3 lakh students went abroad from here.
Next year it will be 5 lakh students.
And in 10 years?
Our Kerala will turn into a senior citizens' state.
Why would that be?
Sir, think about it.
Every vote you get should be based on the actions you do, not on your promises.
So for at least once...
try to win without sticking posters on walls.

After a few months
We're right now standing in front of the Trivandrum Press Club.
All three major political parties in Kerala are holding a joint press conference, which means it's something important.
It's the first time in the history of Kerala that...
the ruling party, opposition and the third front are holding a joint press meet.
What could be the reason?
Sir, Keralites are surprised by this sight.
We all are waiting to know what this is about.
Two great disasters have affected our state.
Flood and covid.
During that time...
we faced them bravely, irrespective of our politics, caste or religion.
A disaster like those...
perhaps something bigger has been lurking here for some time now.
If you take the entire households in Kerala...
in 70% of the houses, one or two members...
sometimes more than that live in foreign countries.
In most of the houses, it's just old people with no one to look after them.
We admit that it's the mistake of our political leaders, including me.
But are we the only ones who are responsible for it? Never!
The parents and teacher here...
the ones who went before them...
All of them are a part of it.
Even before a child is born, their parents decide...
in which foreign country he should live.
The situation of some of our people who went abroad is pathetic.
We say this with so much pride that...
wherever we go in this world, there will be Malayalis.
If this is going to continue...
there won't be any Malayalis in just one place.
That will be Kerala.
When we try to set up something here...
the government system sometimes makes us feel like quitting.
When things like that happen, you should stand up against them and bring it to our attention.
When one voice becomes the voice of many, it becomes more powerful.
Decisions will be made.
