I think that's the danger

that you don't know when it's time.

As we get older, even though our brain says go,

our body says no, but the red light hits,

all of a sudden you can't help it.

For the last few years, I've had this internal struggle of I don't want to stay too long and become a parody of myself.

Every time I think I'm out, they pull me back in.

People have no idea how much pain he's in physically.

You're about to put your whole legacy on the line and you know that you have no business being in that match.

I have no doubt Art can do anything he puts his mind to.

I sometimes wonder if he knows.

You start second guessing yourself.

Or is it me?

Have I lost that big a step?

Are you the reason why this stuff is happening?

I was two inches away from making my wife a widow.

My kid's father was.

All the time sitting there, just tapping on the back of a shoulder,

waiting for him to turn around and say, hey, do his time.

It's really tough getting older in this business.

It just comes with time.

I'm either gonna go out with a match

that's sitting the Undertaker at WrestleMania,

or I'm going out on my shield one way or another.

I normally share a lot of things that are really personal, but what happened to me?

You know, I used to be a tough son bitch.

What happened?

You don't really call me Santa Claus now, right?

Because I only come out once a year.

That's all you need to.

You look great.

Wow.

Here I am,

you know, at the Slate Point in my career.

And I'm wondering,

am I going to be able to hang with this young guy?

Okay.

I'll keep that in mind.

Just let one of us know, okay?

Really? You really can't k-fade 10 minutes while I'm screwing your camera camera?

I was trying to figure out because I knew I wasn't anywhere close to being at 100%.

I was trying to figure out how to make it work.

That's a huge challenge to only work once a year and to try to have...

timing, cardio, have your gimmick, you know?

I mean, it's tough, it is, but it's my reality.

I mean, that's where I'm at.

At this point in my career, I can't work a full schedule.

Mayor, I said it.

I just love and respect this business so much.

was a, you know, I wanted to be a wrestler, you know.

And what I have imagined, you know,

the success of that character and the longevity,

there's no way.

I don't think I've ever been so drawn to a character so immediately.

It never felt like a performance.

It just felt like someone tapping into his inner self and bringing it out to the public.

It was then and is today the greatest character in the history of the business, as far as I'm concerned.

I always thought like Frankenstein like it was like you couldn't do much to him.

He became what he envisioned the Undertaker would be.

In every sense of the word.

Was less is more.

The pace of my matches was extremely slow.

And then bang.

Oh!

Something really fast.

Like, catch people off guard, like, whoa.

I didn't know he could move like that.

The eye roll, that just happened in a match.

I think it was Greg Valentine I was working.

Heading down in the corner.

Look at that, Mansooni. He has no eyeball.

And I came back and everybody was like, what the hell was that?

The Undertaker walking up, top up, and down.

It goes all the way back to his love of what we do and his love of performing.

What he was willing to sacrifice, it was what he was willing to do.

What in the world?

I've never seen that in my life.

He gave it everything he had.

He was 300 pounds and just a big son of a gun.

Good job, son! I'm so flamed!

And could move in a way and do stuff that men his size shouldn't be able to do.

They're new to take it over! Go!

People fell in love with the character.

They also fell in love with Mark Allaway because they know he worked so hard for them.

The Undertaker receiving a standing ovation from this jam-packed capacity crowd.

There have been a lot of men who have held that belt undeservingly,

but I can say without truth that man deserves to be exactly where he's at.

How fitting!

WrestleMania is just, I mean, that's it.

I mean, that's the creme de la creme in our industry.

And for me, it's big time.

I mean, it is.

You are looking at the most incredible performer

in WrestleMania history.

Just happened, man.

Someone brought it to my attention.

You know, you're undefeated at WrestleMania, and I'm like, well, it's cool.

To me, the streak goes hand-in-hand with WrestleMania.

Ladies and gentlemen, the legend of the Undertaker continues to grow.

Then as WrestleMania, that star is the Undertaker. It's his show.

If there was a Totem Pole, Taker was at the top of the Totem Pole.

He was the best, he was the highest you're gonna get.

I think I earned his respect that night, and to earn taker's respect, you've arrived.

To be given that opportunity, you knew, okay, they trust me.

He trusts me with this baby.

Oh my goodness!

That is the streak.

Who would have thought that one man can make so many

Russemanias to even be able to put himself in the conversation to make that happen?

Every match was different and unique in its own way.

It became this unbelievable moment every year that you look forward to

and look forward to being a part of.

Quite frankly, I mean, the streak is what made it okay

for me to only work once a year.

You know, because I had to defend the streak.

I mean, it takes its toll.

I had a five-year stretch or so there

I would prepare for mania.

I would have my mania match.

All right, bro.

Then I would have some kind of surgery to repair

whatever had been bothering me going into that match

and then go straight from rehab right into training

to be ready to go to mania again.

When Taker talks about the things that he had to do to perform,

I can relate to it because I was going through the same things a lot of time in the same times of I haven't done this

I'm gonna come back. I'm gonna do this

Everybody's expecting it to be at the level that I was at in a certain level and perform like this

But I'm not in the groove. I haven't done it. Can I still do it your mind-place games with you?

By far physically and mentally the hardest absolute hardest thing I've ever done in my life is that performing once or twice a year thing

The road is what keeps you callous, the road keeps you bruised, it keeps you in that ring

shape where you're almost impervious to the bumps because you're doing it on a night

in, night out basis and he would have his three and four month camps but that is no

walk in the park because ring rust and timing is real.

Stay healthy man, keep running, keep running up that road while you're good.

People have no idea how much pain he's in physically and how much pain he tolerates and how many surgeries he's had it's just

They don't understand

To weather through everything that he's weathered through because he loves this business speaks volumes

To sum it up. He's a tough son of a bitch

At this point, every year, that's kind of the big issue.

Is it making sure that there's always enough gas in the tank?

And that's kind of a product of only working

the few matches that I do now.

Everything that I'm dealing with now.

Yeah, it's a

Kind of a crazy web I weave trying to you know

train effectively

They get you know to get them

The maximum results I can with what I'm working with

This is always the most nerve-wracking workout because it's the last workout before the match

and you always fear some type of injury two days before the biggest match of the year.

I want to stay fluid, keep the muscles elongated.

Stay focused and get what you have to get done done and get out

So the two matches I did with Shawn I was excessively sore

The first match we had with Triple H. So I think it was in Atlanta. That was pretty brutal

That's the where I got carted out

I actually had to spend two full days in the hotel after Mania.

Got the hip repaired.

The next year was pretty good. The next year was pretty good.

You know, the match with Brock happened, which to this day, I still don't remember.

This match is simply about one thing, the 21-0 undefeated streak of the Undertaker.

I'm not sure when I got concussed.

Oh!

Oh!

I don't know how that match happened.

I have no recollection of any of that.

My last memory of that day was at about...

I'd say 3.30 in the afternoon.

Vince comes to the curtain and says,

medical, get in here.

Somebody, and this was the first time we had any

indecination that there was something wrong.

And he was sitting in the walkway outside of Guerrilla.

And he had the happy days look on his face

that he had no idea where he was at.

And he looked at me and he kind of smiled.

And he's like, hey.

And I'm like, oh boy, something went wrong here.

I was gone, man.

We decide that probably the best course of action

is to take him to the emergency room.

As we pull into the hospital, Carlos behind us was an SUV.

Door's open.

Of course, the first person who's there.

WrestleMania's still going on.

But who's outside the ambulance?

Vince.

And of course, you know, Mark cusses at us.

Don't you have a show, you know, that's still going on?

But Vince wouldn't have it.

And we're sitting there in a room,

and he kind of looks up at us, and he goes,

I'm not dead guys, come on.

And so we kind of made the room laugh a little bit

so we were able to start joking around.

You know, not to make light of it, but we joke.

He was trying to cheat in the hospital.

The nurses would come and say, you know,

do you know your name?

What's your name?

And he'd go, hey, babe, come here.

What's my name again?

He was so severely concussed that he had no idea his name.

He didn't know where we were.

He didn't know why we were in New Orleans.

He didn't know his name until 4 a.m.

So what I think happened is between getting older.

And then not having, you know, all the reps

and taking all the bumps through the course of the year,

I mean, eventually it caught up with me.

And so I think that explains what happened in New Orleans

is I think that's why the concussion.

But it's one concussion in one match.

destroyed my confidence.

I don't even think anybody even knew, really.

I didn't know.

I was nervous.

He seemed like this is another day it would work for him,

then didn't shake him at all.

It was Triple H that really spotted it.

And I'm waiting to go out, just riddled with self-doubt.

Triple H came to me, you know, he's just like,

hey, remember who the f*** you are.

Show them who the f*** you are.

Yeah, you're all f***ed last year.

Killed his head.

And I remember that being mind-belowing to me,

like, this is the f***ing undertaker.

It was hard for me to contemplate that he had those doubts.

Oh!

It was enough to get me through that match.

Restored a little bit of my confidence.

We're like William Calloway, also known as Gunner Taker.

I got those answers a lot quicker this year.

For him, the Undertaker was back.

What you're watching is the gunslinger back in action.

Everything that he was feeling was gone

and that it wasn't there anymore for fans all went away and it was back.

Gonna take Brock for a last ride!

What? Chulkslam! Chulkslam!

What's going on is I'm getting my confidence back.

Okay, you can still do this.

But what's also happening is more wear and tear.

Like any stretch of the imagination, somebody that was gonna make excuses, he's not gonna

say, oh, I didn't like that match, but you know, my hip was hurting.

No, his hip always hurts.

Both hips always hurt.

When I got in the rumble, I knew.

I was like, what have I done?

And Roman Reigns with his eyes set on the man standing in the ring, the Undertaker.

You're about to put your whole legacy on the line and you know that you have no business

being in that match.

That match should be somebody else's.

Regardless of my injuries, regardless of my age, regardless of everything that's happened,

if I'm on the card, there's some young guy that's making a lot of, you know, the shows

through the year, you know, that may not be on that card. So it's my duty to make sure that it is,

it's worth putting me on the card.

No one would probably say anything to my face if I stunk it up, but I wouldn't know and you know, that's

one of my biggest fears and

It's kind of becoming a parody of myself

I always think this way I kill me

To know like some dad who watched me when he was young has to turn to his son and go

Yeah, I mean he's moving kind of slow now, but man you should have seen him

You know you should have seen him 10 15 years ago, you know, that's just like

You know, I know reality is that yeah, I've slowed down

But still I try to bring them I

Try to bring the best package that I can on that on that night. So

Just because I like I said, it would just kill me if I was you know, it's like

so we hit it off pretty quickly, and we became very close friends.

I'll never forget one of the first times that I worked with Kurt.

I drew back, you know, and I'm about to throw this straight right hand at him, and his face

I mean, I hadn't even done anything yet, right?

And his face is just like,

I still give him crap to this day about that.

If I draw back, are you gonna give me the old one?

I think you should just take the shot.

You remember the first one.

I didn't know you were taking the other gun, knock me out.

There's a difference between working hard and working smart.

I'm learning that.

It took me a while.

You might make it in this business, kid.

The whole locker room leader thing is nothing that I ever sought to be.

It's just the way that I thought that things needed to be done for the sake of the business.

Every one of us looked at the locker room and said that's the dude, you know,

that's the benchmark right there.

Don Corleone, there's nobody that's higher ranking from a respect standpoint as taker.

He always was the guy.

I don't think I've ever been around a wrestler that has carried and earned more respect in the locker room of his peers than Mark Calloway.

I've always been proud of myself that were the people like me or they didn't like me or they agreed with my views or not that I stood up for what I believed in.

Taker wasn't afraid to tell you how to do it then go out there and prove you how to do it.

And I think that's the big difference.

A lot of guys talk a lot of shit about how to do stuff

and how to be good.

Taker backed it up every night.

I'll never forget.

We're in Seattle or whatever.

I'm looking through the curtain.

I'm watching Taker work.

Go out there and tear the house down.

I went, I got no problem with him getting paid more than me.

He's earning it.

People were measured by Undertaker.

So he was the yardstick, and if you did well then pretty much you were in if you didn't, you were out because you knew if you didn't do well it won the Undertaker's fault.

First match we had in 1996 was the day after Russell Manning.

I remember coming back and him just smiling.

One of the most memorable moments of my career.

He was the best.

I don't think there's anybody greater.

and been more of a professional than the Undertaker.

I'm one good shot away from one good man.

It's all there.

But I can tell you this from having seen him

for almost 30 years.

I've never seen him physically in worse shape

than he was before WrestleMania.

Every time I think I'm out,

they pull me back in.

I felt like shit last year.

I have no doubt Mark can do anything he puts his mind to.

He's undertaken everyone so that that is an expectation that you almost have to live up to

It was always really easy and easy to talk to him, you know what I mean and as much as I could pick his brain for work stuff

It's nice to hear real-life stuff and just his experiences and how he carries himself because everything that I've done

You know, he's already done it, you know ten times and he's seen all the places that I'm gonna go or if I've already been

You know back in the day

There's like a rolodex and like a huge filing cabinet of just experience that he has

Years ago the first time when we worked at the Astrodome

It's always nice to be able to do that with him and I was happy that my wife was able to sit there and you know

Hear a couple of his stories and get to talk to him and stuff

I I tend to if I think too much about it too soon sure that I then I think about it too much

It's also cool because like we knew we're about to go do some business like the biggest business, you know of my career

This is the part where it's it's weird, you know what I mean like this is the hindsight like pinch me it doesn't feel real

Am I still sleeping?

Like, this is my yard now.

I'm going to be able to share the ring with the Undertaker.

I'm going to live with this for the rest of my life.

The best way to sum it up, it's just a great honor.

But like, it was a responsibility too, you know what I mean?

I had faith in myself.

But like, at the same time, you just

want to do right by taker.

For the past 25 years, regardless if it was 20 people watching or 20,000 people watching,

the tiniest of towns on a Friday or Sunday or on the biggest stage of them all,

he had to be the Undertaker.

He's got that responsibility to be this person, this character, this role model.

It only takes out one person.

You're like, that's not the Undertaker.

In order to be as successful as him

and to get to that point in your career,

you have to take every single day like it's a WrestleMania.

And that's the hardest part.

He is that guy, and it's just the ultimate respect.

We're good. We're going to tear it up.

but that's what separates being good and great

and being a legend.

We just need a couple little tweaks here and there that I feel like suit my character.

And that guy has gone through everything.

As we get older, even though our brain says go,

our body says no.

But that red light hits, and all of a sudden,

you can't help it.

People say, all you got to do is go out and choke slam somebody,

make your entrance, and everybody's going to be happy.

No, I'm not going to be happy.

Like, when I say, you know, and this is not just stupid man pride

or, you know, cliche stuff,

I'm either going to go out with a match that's the fitting,

the undertaker at WrestleMania.

or I'm going out on my shield one way or another.

Tonight, when Luzer draws, it's going to be tough not to be emotional,

because we don't know when it's going to be the last time.

And I don't care what Roman Reigns does over the next 20 years,

this will be the biggest match Roman Reigns will ever have.

There's a real pressure. This is the last one, you know what I mean?

And I'm his last opponent.

It's a little weird to think about it, you know what I mean?

For him to Kishindo probably the greatest career of all time especially at

WrestleMania and for me to be his opponent and give him the last ride that

he deserves, it's surreal.

There's not many situations that I can't figure out how to make it work within

the wrestling industry. And instead of being able to be creative and focus on the match,

I'm having to figure out, okay, how am I going to sell this? And how am I going to get up and do

this? And how am I going to do that? When all that starts feeding, it really breaks down the whole

process. I think there are a lot of emotions going on that day.

Mark always puts the pressure on himself.

He knows that he wants to go out there and deliver for the fans.

He knows he wants to go out there and deliver for Vince.

And he knows he wants to go out there and deliver for himself.

With me, it's business.

The business comes first, first and foremost.

That's why we're here.

Our job is to go out.

be first-class professional entertainers and to give our fans what they paid

their harder money to see. I come from an era of if you can walk to the ring you

go to the ring and work. Take it we'll go out there and deliver every night.

I've seen him go out there with a 103 degree fever,

need an IV drip as soon as he got to gorilla

because it was coming out of both ends.

And he still went out there for 20 minutes

and tore the house down.

He set the bar for what being a WWE superstar is about.

He's literally been caught on fire on the way

to a chamber match.

He stood in the pod pouring water on himself for 20 minutes before he went out and wrestled

for 30 more minutes with second degree burn.

Like he literally does not make excuses.

We never had a guy that was more reliable than Taker.

He's a tough, physical son of a bitch.

He really truly is.

I knew he was hurting when we were touring the country and the world and having some

pretty epic matches.

left the cell match in much worse shape.

He had actually entered that match with a broken foot.

They don't come any tougher than the Undertaker.

It's just the way that I thought

that things needed to be done.

For the sake of the business

The process has become bigger and bigger each year to get me to a place where I can go out

And deliver that performance

If you stay around as long as I have that your body's going to break down at some point and my body was at

At the limit of what it could take

I can tell you for certain, after all these years and all these WrestleMania's, there's

nervous or had that that feeling in my stomach before I before I go out.

It is hard to even describe all the emotions that you go through,

all the jitters, the concerns.

Am I ready?

I mean, it's just, I mean, it's big time.

I think that most everyone could sense that he was trying, but he wasn't there.

I was so disappointed in my performance and the fact that I let myself do that the problem

was my body was at the limit.

The plan is to resurface your hip.

If he thinks Vince needs him, he's in.

I need redemption.

That's the driving force to prove to the world who I am and what I do.

I don't believe I'm about to watch this.

The problem was, was just my physical condition.

My body was at the limit of what it could take.

First and foremost you care about the human being then you care about the character from a human being standpoint

What's best for my family and then what's best for me?

Have my kids be able to chase them and you know and play with them

You know, that's that's the stuff that's important

Everything that I've done for the last 30 plus years. It's time to kind of you know enjoy

I take a lot of pride in what I do in the ring and not being able to get the fans what they expect.

I don't want to be a parody of myself, so if I can't deliver and give everything that I have,

people expect to see when I don't want to cheapen the work that I've done over the last 27 years.

That plays a lot into this surgery.

You keep expecting you to stop, and you're like,

I've got about halfway through.

You also had a knee scope, correct?

He's trying to straighten them if you're wondering,

but they don't straighten them.

You know, when you're looking back,

wow, that's a lot of surgery time, but...

The career wouldn't have been what it was, without it.

Okay, so the plan is to resurface your hip and then put in the metal bowl, metal socket.

We're going to get you up today, then we'll let you leave the hospital.

Although, uh, Vince has given me a lot of grief about not leaving the same day.

He says, what time's your surgery?

I was like, why, it's 1.15.

He says, that mean you're going to leave at 5.15?

Like I gotta fly I gotta fly somewhere. So, you know, we're worried about blood clots and stuff like that. That's right

Keep the testosterone in the rings. Yeah. Yeah, he's no need to rush the recovery. Yeah, he's funny

So we're gonna be safe about it

Any other questions? No, I'm just I'm figuring it what seven years. I mean you ought to have this stuff down, right?

For me, I sit there and pray that everything's going well, that Dr. Sue has laser-like focus

and that the recovery will be good, and I completely trust Dr. Sue.

He's the best at what he does.

But that doesn't change the fact that my husband's going in there

is being put under with a very major surgery.

There's always complications, and you just never know.

Just another day at the office, right?

The biggest wrestling star of all time?

They give me the good stuff and then I do remember my theme playing

and so I slowly dozed off into oblivion.

Great, we're doing a right hip resurfacing.

There's our mark.

Being able to operate on a physical specimen like Mark is kind of a treat.

We're going to smooth it out with these instruments and create space for the new joint.

Everything is gigantic, everything is really clear, and his bone is really good quality.

His bone is going to support that implant for years and years to come.

So going very smoothly, it's going to get good relief and recover very quickly.

Physically.

Being able to walk around pain-free that's been huge and the emotional freedom of not being in

Was just loving life and being able to do things that I had been able to do a while and do it without pain

selfishly I wanted him home because I wanted him to just personally be able to enjoy

being in a little less pain, you know, being able to run around with the kids.

Soccer games and softball games and volleyball tournaments and school events,

granite were uber drivers for the kids, but I don't think he'd have it, you know, any other way.

Michelle, she is, she should get a medal for what I've put her through, what she's had to endure.

and still wakes up with a smile on her face

and attacks each day.

She was able to show me what was important in life again,

because I had kind of lost that.

He's super humble, super kind.

I think people have this image of him walking around the house

with his eyeliner on and his eyes in the back of his head

half the time, but that only happens occasionally.

He's also playful and romantic.

People don't get to see that side of him.

When you think about soulmates and people say that, I mean, she's mine.

I don't know that anybody would have stuck it out like she has

But that's what I needed and not because he was my boss or anything else. It was because he was my friend and

person in my life that has made me a much better man.

When I watched it back, it reaffirmed tenfold everything that I thought.

I looked old, I looked slow, I was overweight, I couldn't move.

and it just wasn't undertaker-esque,

I guess, in any sense, really.

I had one match too many.

Thinking in my head right now,

So that's when the wheel started turning

like I need redemption.

The process became, I'll give you an answer

after I see how I feel.

Working out for a few weeks, getting back in the ring,

seeing how my hip does.

And that's kind of where we began.

WWE brought a ring down for me.

There was this old jet ski repair place

that's been abandoned since I moved out here to this area.

It was just a disaster.

I'd get the electricity turned on.

I'd get water turned on.

The biggest thing was just cleaning this place up.

Yeah, it was about as redneck as you can get.

But it served its purpose, and it served it well.

It came down to maybe somewhere during the chamber,

as I give him a deadline on whether or not

it felt like I could do, you know, I could be ready.

Obviously, he had to have a deadline

so that he could book his card.

And I needed to know that I was going to have what it took

to be able to have that kind of match.

I'm pretty sure I officially retired.

At least five times.

Huh?

At least five times.

To be able to continue to increase the speed and movement

and hit ropes and to take a bump and be able to get up and go,

you know what?

That's not so bad.

That's pretty cool.

He felt good, and he said, record this.

I was like, OK.

So he hit the ropes three, four times, took a couple of bumps.

He came into the corner and he said,

I ain't as good as I once was,

but I'm as good once as I ever was.

I see you in New Orleans.

It was the day of the chamber that I sent him that.

I think I sent it during the show.

So, that was kind of my little rib of trying to make it wait and draw it out as long as I could.

He sent me a text. I think there was an excipitive in it, and then, yeah.

So, I think he was excited to see me be able to move like that.

He knew it was a good idea. He knew it was going to draw a lot of people.

It's something that people probably want to see.

I was like, okay, if you make this decision,

we're gonna do everything we possibly can

every single day to get you as healthy as we can

and to get you as prepared as we can.

When I started, I was still really heavy.

I was 315 pounds.

I'd been lifting, but just lifting to lift,

not really doing much cardiovascular wise.

So, I mean we basically had to start at ground zero and start working on the cardio

The worst thing about this nowadays it takes me longer to

Get ready and warm up than it does to work out

So right now what we're doing is we're just giving him a little bit longer time to to warm up

We've learned that

Some athletes take a little longer and because of his age and his injuries and everything else

We make sure that we get him really kind of a little bit warmed up to get his part rate up

And also get that blood flow going and then we transition into the workout

You have to think about all the ebb and flow that goes through a match.

Once your cardio goes, and if you're five minutes in a match,

it breaks down your ability to create in the ring, react in the ring,

all you're worried about is your air.

I couldn't get up like that last year without a week.

the wheels started turning like with the way I feel right now I can go out and have a better match

than last year and then it basically turns into not I don't want to have just a better match

I want to have the match then it all starts flowing back you want to steal the show you want to

create this unbelievable memory and and have this and then say now I can make the decision

Now I can go out on my terms instead of it being something like that happened last year

When you get in here

And you get winded and you get gassed and you want to quit.

You know, that's why this stuff's hanging up.

I look over there, all those guys are looking back at me.

Like, come on, you old son of a bitch.

Get off your ass and do this and do it right.

I oscillated my sound.

You draw energy from wherever you can.

instead of having to warm up through the course of the match.

And then I was fortunate enough to have Primo come in somebody who's very good in the ring very quick and very fast

You know, that's a lot different than just hitting ropes and and taking back bumps

Give me the tumble, but let me sack her out and then give me a clothes line down. Okay

I was surprised, I didn't know what kind of taker I was going to see, but he came out

of his car and I saw, I see him, you know, he looks healthy, he lost 30 pounds.

So he, I know he's dedicated to tear it up, come mania.

One thing I could say about taker is that he never phones anything in, he doesn't half

ass do anything.

I can't remember the last time I had to move that fast.

So when I come up, one, two, then we start going down.

It's kind of creeping in that there's a good chance

that tomorrow is the last time that I make that walk.

But then the match has to live up to those expectations.

We've had one singles match in his entire career here, which is just amazing. I

You have a man in Mark Calloway that wants to go out on his own terms,

and Mark Calloway is going to go out the way that he wants to go out,

and that's on top in the best performance of his career.

He always says, I'm not as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I'll ever be.

So, you know, that's kind of his motto.

I can go out once a year and be as good as I've ever been.

So, I believe he's gonna do that this year.

about how I was gonna hit the ropes or how I was gonna get my foot up or how I

was gonna punch or how I was gonna do anything I just did it

the undertaker is back better than ever

as strange as that sounds it's been a while since I've had a match where that

was the case

I don't take anything for granted.

None of this happens without him.

He gave me an opportunity a long time ago.

Obviously changed my life.

It's something that I do every year.

Give him a hug and tell him thank you.

I mean, it was obvious that I had no business being in the ring.

Someone like Undertaker who gives his life through good times and very bad times in his business

feels a certain way when he feels he could have done better, which is a shame

because we all love him because he's the Undertaker.

I hope from this day forward, he understands who he is and I hope he appreciates it.

It felt good, you know, just selfishly.

I would have, you know, liked to have been out there a little longer, but it is what it is.

You know, kind of bittersweet.

And I feel short, awesome.

Not what I trained for, but I mean that we don't.

We don't sell time, I guess.

We sell entertainment.

So hopefully that's what they got.

I trained for 45, and I get five.

You know, I feel awesome.

I've never been to the gym.

Mission accomplished, and what we set out to do.

I had a lot more in the tank tonight, I mean, you know.

And, yeah, at the end of the day, that's what I wanted.

I just thought that was gonna happen

after a 30 minute back and forth slugfest war.

Hopefully people are gonna wonder tonight, like, wow,

what's he do next?

You know, it's been a running joke.

How many years I'm gonna retire?

I think if I had to, I could.

If I want to, I can look at it like, okay, you can still go.

I mean, I don't, it's just, there's no sense that you may give me an answer, really,

I was able to train for the first time in a few years the way that I wanted to train,

pain free in my hips. I was prepared to do a 20-30 minute match.

If it had happened with Cena, yeah, there's probably a good chance that I could have walked away and been okay.

Then it was a, you know, it was a three-minute match, so what are you going to do?

The matches that I've won, she's actually fallen asleep and

missed, so she's only stayed awake for the ones that I've lost, really.

So I think she was excited to know that I could still win a match.

She goes, yay, daddy.

So she was cheering for you, but she was mad that you lost, that you beat John.

Now, I gotta worry about John Cena's feelings.

It was nice that I got to crush her favorite and let her know that her daddy was a man.

But I was disappointed the match was only what it was.

I would have liked to have seen him have a little bit more time and go out there and just physically put on a show I knew he was capable of.

But in that short two, three minutes, that did more for him mentally and emotionally than anything else.

The fire was really lit once I came out of the scene of match.

I mean, I was feeling good. I was in shape.

You know, I was like, well, shoot, I can, you know,

I can work a few matches.

You know, I was ready to go.

And Saudi, just what they're trying to do over there,

and being part of that was intriguing to me.

It's kind of an honor to be invited, really.

It was all part of that initial relationship period

between the Saudis and WWE.

So it was important if you could be part of stuff like that.

I mean, those are the kind of things

you're going to remember forever.

When you go across the world, you don't necessarily know how different people receive things

like that.

So I'm always curious when we break out caskets or whatever we do in the morbid macabre undertaker

world that how it's going to be received.

No matter what continent he haunts the reaction is always the same for the phenom

The undertaker to be this close to it still takes my breath away

They seem to really enjoy it and be right there lockstep with us. Here we go

So intimidating, so dominating.

And they did a good job in the match.

It was a win-win all the way around.

How many times have we seen this over the years?

Physically, I didn't feel quite as good tonight as I did, obviously, in New Orleans, but I'm still

90% better than I felt in a few years. So, you know, at this point in my career,

I just can't take a match for granted anymore. I just can't, you know. So, it was really nice to

get the reception that I got when I came out, you know. I mean, that never gets old,

That's kind of a bucket list thing to do is to headline Mattis the Square Garden.

Even after all these years, it's still special enough to bring me right in the middle of my

vacation and do this. So I just want to kind of soak it in one last time, you know, in case this

is it. You never say never, I've learned that now, but it'll probably be my last match in the garden.

When I rolled up to the garden and it was lit up in purple,

that was a really special moment for me.

Like, after all these years in the business,

you do sometimes we get a little jaded about things,

but it was like, wow, man, that's Madison Square Garden.

That's been Vince's house forever.

The wrestling extravaganza of all time, WrestleMania.

All these iconic moments in history

line the halls of the building.

To have your name at the top of the page

on a sold out Madison Square Garden card,

that's when you know you're doing something right.

These fans here in New York come to the garden.

I mean, they are fans of the truest sense, you know.

Tonight, they're garden.

The dead rises. Rest in peace.

Come on!

Are we going to do that next week?

You're going to take your right wing to my left.

So, I just want to go out there and be able to entertain them,

give them a little bit of what they expect

when they see the undertaker's name on the marquee.

You got to bring it at the garden.

And if you do bring it, then those people show you love.

And if you don't, then they will let you hear it.

They pay their money to come sit down and watch the best

And if you don't give it to them, you're in trouble.

really nice to get that kind of reception from the garden crowd and make all the aches

and the pains go away for a little bit, even if it's for a few minutes.

Not knowing exactly what I had physically, it sure helps get you through those little

hiccups and those little bumps when you start feeding off of the crowd.

It was nice being out there with a bunch of young guys.

The guys that are out there working every night.

Hopefully there's something that somebody can pick up

and make themselves better.

Then that makes it a success for me.

Tonight I was taking moments to kind of look around in something that I normally ever never do make eye contact with people I

Reflect back on you know been here so many times and had so many big matches here

That's a good group of guys that I was in the ring with.

We delivered tonight, and everybody, I think,

went home happy and excited.

It's good that it's still special,

because when it's not special anymore, then it really is.

then I have to first and foremost think, OK, how far am I

out and how hard do I have to work now

to get myself ready to do that?

So I get a call often Vince calls me like hey, you want to work with Triple H?

Yep, I'll do that. Yeah, and you want me to go to Australia to do it? Yeah, that's fine. Let's get it done

I'm proud to say that WWE will be making history in Australia presenting super showdown the undertaker

and Triple H will compete against each other

for the very last time, ending an iconic era in WWE.

When I first came in to the company,

95, and the Undertaker had an aura.

That Undertaker persona was legit.

We had a few opportunities to be in the ring.

Maybe that changed his respect level for me.

Then there was one night where we were all out,

everybody was out.

He kind of motioned for me to come over

and poured out two shots of Jack

and kind of sat there looking at me for a little bit.

Then we started talking and finally he just said,

you're all right with me and we did a shot of Jack

and I don't drink and he knew it.

And I think it was kind of the icebreaker for me and him.

We've always had this mutual respect for each other. We think a lot alike and match preparation

And the way we go about storytelling

Just one of the people that I have enjoyed working with

He was a locker room leader, he was sort of a sounding board for things.

When Steph and I got together and were starting to have a relationship,

the guy that I talked to about it was Taker.

He was one of the most supportive guys of it.

He was like, screw everybody else and their opinions of you.

You know what you bring to the table and so do I.

If anybody else doesn't like it, that's their problem.

You know, he was in our wedding at a certain point in time.

you've found yourselves being two of the things that were just still always there.

If you walked in the locker room, the one guy that could relate to everything that you had been

through for the last 20, 25 years or whatever was take her. We don't have a day-to-day buddy-buddy

hangout. That's not us, but I can look over across gorilla and see him in his own head and can talk

Do we call each other every day and see how our lives are going to go on? No, but I think he knows

If he ever needed anything, he could call me and I would be there and that goes both ways

For whatever reason, I mean we've always had this really unique chemistry on a personal level and on a professional level

I've got a lot of moments in my career that I hold

Very near and dear to my heart and they're very special to me with a lot of different guys

But I you know and no disrespect to anybody

But you know, I think overall what I'm most proud of as far as

Matches and storylines and all that are the four matches that I had

The two with with Shawn and the two with Triple H

The two matches was Sean

Man, I'll put him up against any

They have different personalities different careers and attitude and persona and styles

It was no secret early on I was not a big fan of Sean Michaels

Sean could rub me the wrong way outside of the ring

I can't really think of anybody that I had rather work with in the ring than Sean. He's just that good

The respect that he had for me because of my ability,

that tempered or evened everything out in his mind with me.

And thankfully, 20 years ago, I changed.

I mean, he was just a completely different human being.

Now you have two guys that respect each other.

They're at the top of their games.

The chemistry he and I had that may be one of the things that puts a biggest smile on my face because it was just

Magic being in there with it. We're gonna go old school on Shawn Michaels. No, he does. I

Knew Shawn was gonna be Shawn

Undertaker was gonna be Undertaker

And it was magic

Working with Randy at that WrestleMania,

and I remember watching as I was getting ready

and thinking like, we are f***ed.

It was the greatest thing I'd ever seen.

You can feel the electricity.

He felt it, I felt it.

Everybody in the building felt it.

I remember saying I'm having an out-of-body experience because I thought I was I just seen things that just were

phenomenal determination

Mighty was classic

Great chemistry between those two guys.

Great execution.

Storytelling is what we do,

but it's storytelling out of spinus.

The pressure of not only following what many consider

the greatest WrestleMania match ever,

and then on top of that,

you also have the responsibility of having his last match.

And you've already set the bar the year before.

The Undertaker's undefeated streak in WrestleMania against,

well, Shawn Michaels' career.

And the seeds were planted for tonight's epic encounter

at last year's WrestleMania.

The first one was...

off the charts, and then the second one is the way that I'm gonna leave a line

of work that has been a part of my life since I was 19. And it does not appear

that Shawn Michaels is intimidated at all. He got the John Elway retirement.

John Elway goes out, wins the Super Bowl, boom, and he retires. And then got to leave on his terms.

Sean Michaels will not surrender.

Two-stone!

Sean Michaels, the leader, is open.

Everybody's still sort of amazed that I'm able to stay retired.

That speaks to the closure that we were able to have

with one another in that match.

was there is the ultimate show of respect this might be the ultimate

WrestleMania moment

I'm so envious of Shawn because he was able to walk away and be he was good

Do I wish I had that kind of clarity? Absolutely.

I absolutely wish I had that kind of clarity.

He had the clarity before going into the match.

And hopefully, when I have the match that I'm looking for,

one way or another, I hope I have that clarity to know.

It's like, okay, that's it.

Sean did what he did.

Taker still no pun intended wrestling with it.

He's been doing it so long, it's just hard to give up.

It's hard to think of a storybook ending for this incredible character,

but I believe there'll come a time when he knows it's time to say goodbye,

and it will be almost understood that we've seen the last of a true phenomenon.

I want it to go right for him, to have that proper moment.

I mean, I really hope he gets it.

And if he gets it, then he knows to take it

and finally close the door.

At that point in time, Taker's starting

to talk to me about, like, hey, what if on the other side

of this, you and I pick this up and we run with this.

It's like one continual story.

It started having her hell,

and then it was Sean's retirement match,

and then it was Triple H taking up for his buddy.

I mean, the story was so good and intermeshed.

Man, I was all for that,

but the pressure of that, that is,

I just watched two back-to-back

of probably the greatest matches I've ever seen,

and now, there you go.

You got two guys who are ass-kickers and don't take a step back.

What limits will these relentless men go to to leave with a victory here tonight?

The brutality, I mean, we took it to another level, that's for sure.

Wait! Undertaker for the Hellscape submission!

There's still life!

Look at him catch!

I know it felt like the end of an era to us and kind of how do we encapsulate that?

We'd all had so many conversations about this and getting Sean back involved.

And it all seemed to begin to come together as we kept talking about Hell in the Cell

because that's the match that he and Sean started and all the Hell in the Cells that

there had been, Taker and I had been and like two-thirds of them.

Here we go, end of an era.

To me that story had everything.

Sean Michaels, Mr. WrestleMania, who's the referee.

Here's the guy Undertaker who he couldn't beat at WrestleMania. Here's his best friend Triple H. Now he's the rep

He has to stay impartial

Sean Michael's the special official in this matchup. Oh, man

In Sean's facials and his expressions and his emotions throughout this entire match made for tremendous theater

I don't think there's a better hook in a match than

Into the pedigree

into the kick-out.

It's not over! It's not over!

Amazingly, the Undertaker still lives!

John Michaels has been called. It's matched up down the middle.

His emotions overwhelming him.

I think right there, more so than any other time ever,

did the people think that the street would be broke.

I knew that we had just finished something that was going to be so special that would

last through the annals of time in our industry.

It was storytelling at its finest.

Here for the last four years, these guys have beat the living hell out of each other and

we did.

It's as if these three men know that they will never be at the same place at the same time in this exact environment.

It just was all real in that moment, us leaving together, us standing on the top of that stage together.

That's one of my favorite moments, I think, of all time.

A standing ovation from 78,363.

In a moment that will live in infamy and WWE, an image we can never replicate.

It was an organic moment that happened. It wasn't planned.

It was probably one of the most special moments of my career.

Standing up there with those two guys,

I had the utmost respect for it.

I have a picture, Sean has one and Triple H has one.

Actually, Triple H had him made for us.

And it's the picture of the three of us

standing at the top of the ramp.

Picture hangs above the door of my gym.

And it's a constant reminder of probably the most special.

moment in my career.

I'm not going to have these kind of opportunities

to really be in the ring with someone of a magnitude,

experience, you know, respect.

There's a true friendship there, and it's always nice

to know from a wife's standpoint,

like, I don't have to worry about that.

You know they're going to take care of one another,

and you know it's going to be good.

That's what makes it really special.

For the people that were along for the ride the first time they're going to be instantly hooked because of what we did the first time

On the same token. I want them to be able to say man. I was there. I was there the last time

Triple H and the undertaker fought

As a fan, I wanna see it.

Two legends, two icons, the Undertaker and Triple H in the culmination of

one of the greatest rivalries in the history of sports entertainment.

At WWE Super Showdown with my brother of destruction watching my back.

Triple H will rest.

The expectations for this match,

they're gonna be astronomical,

just due to the talent that's involved in it.

with guys, you know, triple-H, Shawn Michaels, Cain.

I know that they're going to be able to do what they do,

and I'll be able to do what I do.

Hopefully we deliver on what it is that people are expecting tonight.

and we've been able to do incredibly entertaining matches.

I think everybody's just kind of like,

yeah, let's just go out there and do what we do

and show the young kids how the old guys do it.

We just have to go there and have a match.

Like, I can do that by sleep with him.

I mean, there's always pressure.

We always have pressure to perform, but there's no added pressure.

There was no reason to stress because you know the other guy knows what he's doing and you'd be able to go out there and tear it down.

Truth be told, at this point this is the only reason I come to work anymore.

Not the fact that we'll have 75,000 people out there.

We have played cards in a lot of different countries.

Continents, yeah.

Most people who know me and understand me in the working environment know if I give you a lot of crap, then I think a lot of you.

Is there anyone that's a real sore loser?

It is a big fight feel in front of 70,309 WWE fans.

The history of hate on the faces of these two men.

It's been seven, eight years, nine years since those last matches together.

It's been a lot happened to us since then.

It was old school storytelling.

Undertaker goes old school!

Both of these superstars with two of the best legacies in the history of sports entertainment.

Neither one wants to have a tarnish tonight.

It needed to be physical and violent.

I think we went at it in a way that jippified that it was going to be the last matchup.

Two superstars who have literally done everything there is to do in this industry,

asking themselves now,

what more do I have to do for one final victory?

Sludge Hammer in hand again.

And off the face of the Undertaker.

Sweet Tim Music into a pedigree.

And with that, it's over.

For the last time ever, both of these superstars left it all.

of acknowledgement from the dead man. How iconic is this moment? Two gladiators

sharing the ring with two men who have shaped their careers.

I think as a whole, I think I'm gonna be happy with it.

Now I may watch it, and I'm like,

holy crap, Kane screwed up so much in this match.

I won't be the first to say that.

People are gonna leave here with something very specific

that they want to see.

I think we did our job that way, for sure, you know.

So we'll see what happens

Early on, working with them was pretty intimidating.

It was a little different than this today.

I would never have been able to have the career that I had without him,

and he'd always been an advocate for me.

What a hellish this matchup this is going to be.

Two brothers about to collide.

When I wrestled at WrestleMania for the first time against The Undertaker,

that's my favorite match of all time.

Man, he never took a day off, worked hard.

Obviously, you know, we had our moments when we worked together, we worked against each other.

Both of us have been through a lot, put ourselves through a lot physically.

They do think there's a lot of mutual respect, and hopefully he thinks the same of me.

You can count on, you can just like you can count on the sun coming up in the morning.

One of the few guys I'd ever let hold my wallet if I had to.

Shawn Michaels may claim he stayed away out of respect for me that he no longer has.

But deep down in his black soul,

Shawn knows that what kept him in the shadows for eight and a half years was nothing but fear.

Was I surprised Sean came out of retirement 100% every conversation I had had with Sean at that point was

Absolutely not

But at the same point time you go, I don't want to do this buddy. I mean it's with guys that are

We've all been down the road for 25 years

Was blown away that he agreed to do it

Even talking to him about it, you know, he had no aspirations to make him come back, he was a one-off.

You know, Hunter and Taker and all that, you know, being out there with those guys was just a comfortable thing,

and so it's like, oh, well, that I can do, and that sounds like fun,

and Phil about doing it, and encouraged about doing it.

It's with Kane and Taker, dude, it's the night off, right?

You'll come in there, we'll do a couple crotch chops,

we'll throw some glow sticks out,

a couple super kicks, drop an elbow.

It'll all be great, no problems, right, easy.

Except me and Taker, you know, doing the once in a while

thing Sean hasn't wrestled in however many years.

Kane's the mayor.

He's like a bad comedy movie, it really is.

I said I just tore my pack off Sean never panics on it, but I remember the look in his face like

You're hitting me.

At one point, I remember looking up and it looked like Cain's whole head fell off as the mask came off.

Shawn Michaels had Cain so hard that Cain's mask came off his face.

It couldn't have gone any worse.

As a total train wreck, it was a disaster.

It totally blew.

We're all humans and things that even happen to people that you don't think things like that happen to.

I take a lot of responsibility in that because my mind, I wasn't there.

I mean, I was there physically, but mentally, I wasn't there.

And Michelle and I had some personal things going on with other parts of the...

family and you know so I had that drama you know going on in my head that I was

all consumed with. If that match would have came off the way that it was

intended and the way we would want it to that may have been enough for me.

Here we go. It's gonna be a vicious cycle of I know he's not gonna be happy

I know he's not gonna be happy with his performance, which means he's gonna have to redeem himself

Because he's your buddy because he's you know so important to you. You don't want that for him

It's chasing the dragon and that's uh

That that ain't healthy man

Storybook ending is different

If the closure moments aren't what you want them to be,

you double down on yourself if I can't go out like that.

It's a catch-22, and it's addictive,

and it's hard to break the cycle and get out of it.

Especially after 30 years, you want

to leave on something that just felt right.

I think after the WrestleMania, when he left his jacket

and his hat in the middle of the ring,

that could have been it.

But he wasn't ready.

So I don't think it's anything's going to be a perfect puzzle

where everything fits together until he's emotionally

and mentally has that closure.

And I think once he has that closure,

this being his identity for 30 years,

until he gets that closure, I don't

think it matters what happens in the ring.

Father time doesn't lose any matches.

With the reality syncing in of being human and with other

responsibilities in terms of family and things of that nature

But yet at the same time wanting to perform it's in your heart. You just can't get it out

And when you look in the mirror, which is tough for some of us to do you look at a mirror

And you want to make sure you're the first in the mirrors looking back at you is the reality

And you constantly, in life, are reflecting on,

wait a minute, where am I?

Every one of us got to look in that mirror

and have that come to Jesus talk.

When everything is said and done,

you step away from this stuff.

It's with the misses, it's with those kids

that you got to have real peace and real joy,

or else that disintegrates too.

You're just never going to get that one thing

that you're looking for,

and now you got all this other crap going on.

Yeah, I kind of read that as like okay, you're spinning out of control and you need to make some life changes here or something

I'm coming to grips with the fact that my days in the ring are numbered.

Mania's around the corner, and obviously I don't have a match this year.

And I'm okay with that, I think.

Watching the show, and that's when it really hit me, like, I should be out there.

The Venom will take on Goldberg for the first time ever.

But I instantly text our doctors and I was like, is he okay?

I mean, that's just like a dream.

the table was set for success.

Hunter got hurt, but that totally sucked.

Shawn Michaels hit Kane so hard that Kane's mask

came off his face.

The game has nothing left.

the four greatest of all time.

It was a total train wreck. It was a disaster.

I take a lot of responsibility in that because my mind, I wasn't there.

Michelle and I had some personal things going on with family.

For the most of my career, I could always put that out.

But it just wasn't that way that night.

When you can't go like you need to go or want to go as tough

But you know by the time catches up with every single person. That's just the way it is

I just don't want to see him get hurt, you know his heart's in the right place

His head's in the right place. His body's in a different place

Because of all the other drama I had going on in my life at the time at that point I was like this is just

I left Saudi thinking that I don't, I'm just done.

So, you know, like I'm coming to grips with the fact that

my days in the ring are numbered and it's time for me

to kind of cash in on the things

and be able to do some things that I never would allow myself

to do for the sake of the character

and for the sake of business.

For the most part of my career, I

lived this character in this gimmick.

I feel possessed.

Ha ha ha.

and passed on a lot of opportunities to do other things

because I didn't think that it was being true to the character.

Not many guys could have pulled that off.

I can't think of anybody else who could.

There's this typical thing that people say about this place,

that your character's personality on television is you turned up to 10.

But Undertaker's always on 10.

We all treat that character with such reverence.

I don't even call him Mark anymore.

I haven't called him Mark in 20 years.

I'd say it's safe to say I know less about him as a human being now than I did 28 years ago,

and I like it that way.

Who is this guy?

Is there somebody else underneath there?

When we first started, I bought books about death.

I bought books about undertakers, books about morticians, and books about dying.

You have this huge macabre figure, then the contrast of Paul Bear with it.

Paul Bear Undertaker was always the combo the early years you didn't see him without me or me without him

We were always together. We traveled together. We stayed together and it was just the perfect chemistry

And in those days Undertaker didn't say nothing. He just stood there, you know

It was just amazing the stuff that we could do.

I remember building the coffin for Kamala.

Sawing the wood and crafting this casket for Kamala

and having blueprints and everything drawn up.

All of that just became a part of what he did.

I must now be your judge, your jury, and your executioner.

We had a lot of fun in some of those cemeteries.

that was running right parallel to this autograph signing.

I was oblivious.

I wasn't even keeping up with what was going on or anything like that.

He's like, what are you doing?

I was like, I'm doing, you know, I'm doing this signing.

Well, yeah, but you know, you got all these people thinking you're going to do this.

I'm not stupid, nobody knows anything about me, knows that I'm not going to a different

company.

I've been here forever, I ain't going anywhere, I'm not going to jump ship to go to, well,

why would I?

Vince and I had a little bit of a falling out over it and I understand where he was coming from

He's got a business to run and I understand his position that I also had a position of my own that needed to be understood and

You know, we didn't talk for a little while and then we both largarred down enough to talk and then we got things worked out and

After Crown Jewel, I've just kind of been taking it easy.

Kind of beat up and worn out after the last Saudi show.

I got the biggest kick out of that more so than my stuff

Just kind of having fun as a family, but it felt weird kind of like is this really happening?

with the pageantry and everything going on, this is a big deal.

It is a big fight in our main event at Super Showdown, Goldberg Undertaker.

There are very few true dream matches left in this business.

This is one of them.

What's interesting about this matchup is that in the late 1990s,

these two men did battle, but never against one another.

They did battle on Monday Night's row and Monday Night Raw in the Monday Night rules they were pillars of their shows

And here tonight for the first time. They do battle at Super Showdown

And Goldberg with a spare, a spare by Goldberg

and a setup by the Dead Man

Take a whip across the ring hits the turnbuckle hard here comes Goldberg. Oh God

Goldberg may have been busted open when he went into the corner and he was

Bill got concussed early on. I'm assuming that I think that you know, he had a head injury

You go on last you want to be able to deliver and you want people thinking when they were leaving like wow that was man

It's a dejected look on my face

and there was, because I was upset.

He was really disappointed and I was disappointed.

That crushed me,

because I knew how much it would crush him,

but more than that, yeah, his safety.

I just knew.

And I knew when he came inches, centimeters away from,

you know, breaking his neck, I instantly text our doctors

and I was like, is he OK?

Normally, if he's away and I know something's happened,

I text him like, baby, you OK?

And it's normally, yeah, I'm good.

Don't worry.

I'm good.

And I text him like, how bad is it?

And he's like, man, my back is jacked up.

that he was truly in some serious pain.

I don't think I could even fathom how bad it really was.

It's just like, wow, that was really close to being catastrophic.

And I've seen him go through a lot of injuries.

I've seen a lot of scary moments, but that one, man, that one got me.

That didn't feel good at all.

got this long flight back to the States and my back's bothering me and I'm just like,

man, maybe it's time. Maybe it is you or out of gas and I've got a wife and kids and, you know,

am I risking, you know, permanent injury and, you know, so, you know, all that stuff comes

flooding into your head after something like that happens and I need to really,

you know, take a real honest look at this.

and then assess where I'm at, you know, is it me?

You start second-guessing yourself.

Is it me? I mean, have I lost that big a step?

Are you the reason why this stuff is happening?

So you got all this stuff going on in your head,

and then, you know, you got this pain in your back,

and you can't hardly move, and it was tough for a while.

You just keep hearing that voice of,

man, I really could have hurt myself bad.

I got lucky and he got so, so lucky.

But yeah, I can't imagine how much that would mess with

his head because it mess with mine.

For the Saudi show, I had agreed to do

the extreme rules already.

So now I've got that in my head too.

Like, is there some way that, you know,

can I get out of this?

Do I need to get out of this?

You know, I was just overwhelmed

with all these negative thoughts

in my head, you know, coming out of Saudi.

and go, am I ready for that change?

Because there's also a comfort with that Groundhog Day.

It's a familiarity and stuff that you know.

You know, it's like a frickin' drug dealer, all right?

So, you know, any addiction is bad,

even if it's healthy stuff.

This is the one place and the one thing

that I've always been so confident of.

It's been so hard to walk away.

At a certain point, is it pride?

And is it ego?

And also a work ethic

and wanting to be there for Vince and the company?

I think a lot of those things weigh on him.

For the last few years, I've had this internal struggle of

I don't want to stay too long and become a parody of myself.

I can't deny Father Tom's catching up, I just can't.

We would kid each other about who was going to tap out first.

Of course, it was me by long shot.

I retired, you know, at the WrestleMania 19 against the Rock.

This business is going to go on long after Steve Austin,

the Undertaker, Rock, and anybody else is here.

That's just the nature of the beast.

You'll always miss it, but I realize that I physically can't do it at the level that I want to do it at.

And because of that, it's time for me to move on to the next chapter of my life.

And that's what I'm finally mentally prepared to do.

The kid in me, it's always rooting for him and always there, I always want to see that continue.

The friend in me, there's a certain time where I got to choose a different path.

I felt good about where I was and I left Philadelphia.

I was happy the match came off the way it was supposed to go.

Went to Hawaii for two weeks and had a great time

and I was content.

I wasn't counting them out just yet.

I really always expect him to come back.

I think the pressure he puts on himself plays a part of it,

but look, Undertaker's been his identity for 30 years.

And it's been his identity for so long,

I think he just isn't sure what Mark Calloway does next.

Mark and I had a lot of conversations in that time,

and Lee, I'm done conversation.

Maybe he believed it, maybe he didn't.

But I never got the feeling talking to him.

I'm done.

Ever.

The easiest person to lie to is yourself.

The dragon is still there.

And you're still chasing, you're not done.

What he deserves is not the moment.

He deserves to be satisfied.

They wanted me for TV at the garden, and it's the Mecca.

It's really the home of the WWE.

That's special.

That's just something that you don't get all the time.

One of my favorite aspects of working in this building

is all the iconic shots in the hallways.

When I came out of my dressing room the first thing that I saw was Elvis and then right next to Elvis was Ali I

Would look at those pictures right before I went out

Knowing that I was about to go out and perform in the same arena as two of my lifelong idols had done

Seems kind of hokey, but for me it was just a little bit of a reminder of the importance of Madison Square Garden

I mean, that's just that was just truth

Everybody knows it takes me a long time to get to the ring

If you're in tune with what I do, most people can tell now that it takes me a little longer to leave

because I don't know if I'm going to be back.

I want these people not only here in the garden but everywhere I've worked

to know how much I appreciate them and how much they've sustained me

and helped me get to the ring on nights when the aches and the pains and the broken bones

and everything else were going on.

It was their cheering and them holding up their lighters and them shouting rest in peace that would get me through a lot of nights.

I wanted to come out here and take a minute and absorb all this.

For the past 30 years, I've considered these hallowed grounds my home.

how many times I'm gonna get to come home anymore.

But there's one thing that I want everyone to remember

about this place, the legends that made their name here

and the heroes that were created right here

in Madison Square Garden.

And that's special after nearly 30 years of doing this stuff get that kind of reaction still

Let you know that they appreciate how hard that you tried to work for them and a lot of energy out there

I wish I could bottle it

So far I didn't figure that part out yet

Personally I'm at a spot where if I don't if I don't walk in the ring or get in the ring again perform the ring again

I'm okay

And it took me a long time to get to that spot, you know.

I would be at home and think, yeah, yeah, I'm good.

And then I would come to work.

And you get an ovation and that kind of energy out there.

And then you think, yeah, I can still do this, you know.

When you're in the business that we're in,

You live for the crowds, you live for the pobs.

Now, finding something that brings you all those same highs

and all the great stuff that comes with the business

and that adrenaline and all the stuff, it can't take a while.

Well, your mind plays tricks on you.

In one minute, you think, I can't do this the way I used to do this anymore, and you know that.

But, well, sure, I can. My mind still works the same way, and I just got to physically feel a little bit better,

but I can still do this, and you think you can move the way you did, and you can't.

When you have to start thinking about this, it becomes really difficult.

When I was young, and I was out on the road all the time, you never think about getting hurt.

or something catastrophic happening.

You don't.

You go out and you work hard

and you do your thing every night.

Nowadays, I think a lot more

because one, I don't move as well as I used to move.

I don't have the reaction time that I once did.

Due to injuries, I don't have the strength

that I used to have.

And all those things, they start getting in your head

and you worry about something catastrophic happening.

Something nearly catastrophic happened in Saudi

the last time I was there.

Was anybody's fault? It was just something that happened, but I was two inches probably away from having my neck broken

Oh, I was two inches away from making my wife a widow and my kids fatherless

Once those thoughts once they get in there, it's really difficult to get them out

Once you start thinking those things it's like a hamster wheel you just keep hearing that voice of man

I really could have hurt myself bad

The shackles on your mind of do I do this do I stop now do I keep going that's rough

Where am I gonna be ten years from now if I keep going and especially if I don't have that burning desire here

To go out and do it

The big part of it is is I'm okay

I'm okay mentally and emotionally if I'm not an in-ring performer anymore.

I just want to capture, you know, I really want to capture what these last few years and,

you know, things that we've had to go through to get out there. That's more important to me than

the the will to be the best that I could be this part of my career and

Now you know and work in my way as I did that work in my way to where I am now where I'm

I'm good to walk away

Because when we started this whole thing, I wasn't you know, I wasn't

So it's all good man. It's all good

I mean, I could do for a gathering or a party.

Not to be a prima donna, but if you could go to makeup

and find something to like.

No one more upset about my career choice,

but no one more proud by the end of it.

Because I was in college, I had a full scholarship.

And then I decided that I wanted to become a professional

I thought that was the stupidest thing.

You get an education.

No, you get to go play basketball.

than I do, but a guy who loves the business like he does and that's a bunch

and is still wondering what's next. What gets me is when people tell me what I

need to do.

You know, nobody knows what I need, but me in the sense of when it's time to, you know, when I'm gonna hang it up

There's got to be some finality somewhere regardless of anything. I'm gonna write my own story and I'm gonna write my own ending

I had no idea that that was gonna be a kind of a gateway

My buddy and I were talking and he said that he watched the podcast was done cold and and he wants to retire on on his own terms

Pride is a sum, bitch.

It's not so much that I feel like I have anything left

to prove to the business or give to the business.

It's personal challenges with me.

It almost sounded like he was gonna go one more match

or maybe two more and I thought,

if he's gonna do something,

how can I be one of those matches

if he's gonna do more than one?

I just wanna be one of them.

Broke his call sessions with the Undertaker,

Mark Calloway, cheers.

Enjoyed it.

I was like, you know what?

I'm going to give it a shot.

All he can say is, no, it's not a big deal.

I didn't ask Vince, because if Taker doesn't want to do it,

well, then it's not going to happen.

So I called Undertaker.

I mean, we just started chatting.

I had a pretty good idea of what he was calling for.

He goes, when you were on Steve's show, you said you were going to kind of go do things

on your own terms.

What's that mean?

I mean, are you going to work?

And you want to do something?

He goes, I would love to do something with you at Mania.

And I was like, oh man, I don't know.

I was like, bro, honestly, I would have loved to work with you 10, 15 years ago.

I said, man, I think we could have tore the place down.

you know, aspirations are getting back in the ring.

And he goes, man, I just, you know, if you don't,

I just think about it.

If it's me, I'm looking at the roster, I go, right?

I want AJ Styles.

That's who I'm gonna have my last match with.

Because AJ is a guy who, from an athletic standpoint,

can help him have that final chapter, I think.

We talked about how some of his matches with smaller guys like Shawn Michaels. So I've always been his better matches

For some reason I really tend to understand

Dynamic between someone my size and someone AJ's size

And then putting something together that people can sink their teeth into and understand and get the story

These guys are throwing bombs at each other.

I think he's an awesome storyteller with his matches.

Right after night, AJ Styles continues to be the best performer of our generation.

In my opinion, AJ Styles is the best wrestler on two feet right now,

and Undertaker can trust him.

And at this point in Undertaker's career right now,

he's got to be out there with someone he can trust.

Oddly enough, we've been vacationed with one of AJ's best friends for almost 10 years,

so we've gotten to know AJ and Wendy and his kids through them.

So AJ reached out and he's like, hey, you know, take, if you've got one more in you,

I'd be honored.

And Mark looked at me and I was like, there's nobody better.

There's absolutely nobody better to get into the ring with if you're going to do it, and

be good.

You know, he's like, really?

you're like steering me in the direction I thought you wouldn't steer me and I'm like,

but it's AJ like it's it could be magic. So I said give me a couple weeks to think about this

and I'll get back with you. I said well just so you know whatever you your decision is it's the

right one. When you're AJ Styles and you're as good as AJ Styles is when you call Mark that's

I promise Matt Bloom that I would come down here and work with some of their big

guys. I'm pretty sure they were all fairly nervous. A lot of the times guys

they don't look genuine because they're trying to be something that they're not

and that's a difficult thing to figure out.

And once they found out that I wasn't going to shred them,

I think they felt a little more comfortable.

Everything we liked, it was there.

That's a nice way of saying it.

That was some stiff shit.

The business is in his heart.

He wants to give everything he has to anybody who will listen.

So anytime we're in Orlando, he's at the PC.

And he's helping the guys, and he's helping the girls.

It's, I think, not only important that people like the Undertaker pass on their knowledge,

it's imperative to the survival of the business.

This business has always been handed down from one to the next, to the generation to

the generation.

If they make it theirs, then they pass that knowledge down on to others.

I got to know him best on European tours, picking his brain, cracking open a cold one

I remember my first match with him, it was on SmackDown.

It's a chance of a lifetime for this 22 year old who's only been in the WWE for a few weeks.

I could tell he liked me because I was arm dragging him, hip tossing him, giving him backdrops.

He was taking all these bumps for me because he wanted to go out there and really make the young kid look good.

I remember we came back through Gorilla, and Vince was like,

what are you doing?

And Undertaker just looked at him and goes, well,

it's good for the kid.

I'm trying to make the kid.

Isn't that what we do?

And that response right there, I thought was so cool.

And it just showed me, he just wants to make me look good

because he knows that I'll return the favor

farther down the line.

This business is forever.

The Undertaker character is forever, but I'm not.

And it's my responsibility to guide these younger guys.

Help them to become the best that they can be.

You're doing nothing, but it looks like you're doing f***ing everything.

It only makes this industry stronger.

He teaches everyone everything.

That's just how powerful he is here.

To say I learned one thing from him is an understatement.

I'm gonna make Jeff Hardy famous.

I've been so fortunate to have him as a, you know, mentor and a leader and a teacher throughout the past years.

To be in there, it may have been raw with him in my early 20s. I mean, it was just incredible.

You know, he would basically tell me what I did wrong or what I could do better, and then I would just take that and run.

This is the first time I'll be in a ring since extreme rules I

Told myself I was gonna try and keep myself in

Some semblance of shape of course that went right out the window

We'll see what these boys are a learning day

For us to come back today what happens is gonna be how I make my decision

My plan is is kind of work around with those guys and then kind of morph into doing more stuff myself

So I can really make an honest assessment of where I'm at

It's on point I mean no hurry

It's good for him to be around it it lights that fire their youth their desire it's like jumping in the fountain of youth

right up to the rope, right where you're at, right there.

That's how you don't become the bitter old guy.

You surround yourselves with young people

that are fresh and hungry and knowledgeable,

and you talk about it, and you engage in it.

I knew at some point through these two days that I had to assess where I'm at.

I just want to make sure that I feel like when I'm asked my buddy to do something, you know, it's going to answer.

I felt much better than I thought I was going to.

I felt like my stride was long, felt pretty natural.

I'm still kind of torn.

I know I can do it physically,

but mentally I have to figure out if I'm 100% in,

which I have to be.

I can't do this half-assed.

I left on a very high note.

Extreme rules really far exceeded my expectations.

you know what happens if I go out if I decide to do this I go out and I'm

disappointed in my performance now what right you can't stop like

there you now you're going to keep going and redeem this

Toronto I work with flair and it was WrestleMania

I remember afterwards, you know, Rick coming and thanking me and talking about how his self-confidence was in the tank after WCW.

I just couldn't understand. I was just like, what are you talking about? Like, you're Rick Flair.

You know, you are wrestling. This is what wrestling is about, you know? You're the nature boy, you know?

Ooh, you know, all that. I didn't understand until these last few years. I know exactly now what he was talking about.

I know what that self-doubt feels like.

Don't worry about the hard work. It's just you know all the sacrifices that Michelle's gonna have to make and you know the time

That I'm gonna have to spend away from my daughter

Gonna have to go home and think about it talk with my family about it pray about it

This thing will go on forever

In a singles match with somebody the caliber of styles,

there's nowhere to hide, man.

If you're not conditioned, if you're not ready, you get

exposed.

As many critics that I have out there that say, just retire,

get out of the ring, is like I said on Steve's show, you know.

I'm gonna do this on my terms.

And if I decide that I'm getting in the ring, then it's my responsibility

to be the best me that I can be on that given night, you know.

I have to train ten times as hard as I ever have for a quarter of the results.

I mean, that's just mother nature.

But I know that going in, so that's why we put in days like today.

The build-up for a WrestleMania has been

Unexpected and she plays the home like a fiddle

Anything and everything she wants she gets despite her husband walking down the aisle getting this ring and getting hurt every time he steps in it now

I didn't know that he was gonna cut such a good promo

that I was going to start hating him for a second.

Undertaker, your wife is going to run you into the ground.

And I'm going to help her.

I actually text Alan's wife during the promo, like a dang.

I was like, this is good, but I'm literally almost hating him.

I was like, which clearly he's doing his job, but jeesh.

I don't see this mythical monster anymore.

I don't see this phenom anymore.

What I do see is a broken down old man named Mark Galloway.

He rips me up and down and he talks about my wife.

He crossed every boundary that I would never let anyone cross.

And I think that's why it resonated so well with people.

I am going to take the Undertaker's soul at WrestleMania, and I promise you,

I will literally put the nail in your coffin.

People may not be satisfied unless I push his face back in his head about six inches.

It forced my hand with where I had to go with the character

because I don't feel like how does the Undertaker defend

all the, you know, the bad things that he said about Michelle

is like, I can't, I can't go out there and do,

I can't go out there and be Undertaker.

As great a character as the Undertaker persona is,

you're handcuffed in a lot of ways to what you can do and what you can do.

Around 2000, I was starting to feel a little stale.

The way I looked at it, like, well, if I'm starting to feel stale with this,

what is the audience going to feel like?

And second of all, our business was changing, man.

It was evolving so fast.

It doesn't matter what your name is!

The character needed to change with the times,

and the times were the attitude era,

and everybody was louder, ruder, rowdier.

My mind is like, if I don't evolve this character somehow so that it fits in, then I'm going to get lost.

I had to keep elements of The Undertaker,

but I had to bring it into that era and make it work.

Here comes the real American badass, The Undertaker!

And listen to this crowd!

I could talk as much smack as I wanted,

and didn't have to worry about staying

the confines of the traditional Undertaker character.

Let's let the pain and suffering begin.

I don't think the Undertaker would have lasted or survived if I hadn't have made that switch.

He knows his character better than anyone else in the history of the industry,

but he also knew when to change without changing the mystique and the aura.

Show different lights and shades of gray and just take it in a different direction, but still stay true to who he is.

It just felt real. I think to them it felt like okay, this is what the other side of that undertaker is and I

It's gonna be the undertaker. It's gonna be the American badass and then there's gonna be more Callaway you can feel the wrath

Of the unholy Trinity I'm bringing with me

This is how I'm going to work in this match against him.

You're going to have elements of the Undertaker,

you'll have elements of the American badass,

and you're going to have Mark Callaway defending his wife's honor.

You will suffer.

And most importantly, you will rest in peace.

From the time that I agreed to do it,

I envisioned us having a wrestling match

in a wrestling ring in front of 80,000 people.

We will have more cases.

We will have community spread.

That is inevitable.

COVID-19 is just so bizarre.

At that point in time with everything that was going on in the world with the pandemic and everything we were sort of kind of flying by the seat of your pants.

We are an unprecedented time worldwide.

Vince McMahon's mantra while owning the WWE has always been, the show must go on.

Our fans are the lifeblood of what we do.

They deserve to be entertained, especially during this time and we're driven to prove it.

It was pretty much confirmed that we probably weren't going to be at Raymond James Stadium.

dime and try to make something from nothing the too big for just one night

event will still go on but without an audience holy cow the stadium is not

gonna happen holy cow we're gonna do WrestleMania out of the performance

center holy cow it's gonna be two nights we're gonna have to do some of these

things off-site if they lend themselves to that

They say anything can happen in the WWE and the grandest show of all must go on and it will go on right here

just crazy times and I

Mean our audience is such a vital factor to our product

You just feed off their energy and now your handcuffed in a lot of ways to what you can do and what you can't do

I'm gonna bring back the dead man

in a match that he would love to be in, a boneyard match.

When I got involved in the production side of it,

I asked the question, so like, guys,

what's a boneyard match?

And they were like, I don't know.

Like, do you figure it out?

We drive 40 minutes outside of Orlando

and we get there and it's like a one acre plot

at the end of a residential neighborhood.

And Michael A's and I get out of the car,

and I'm like, you are kidding me.

Like, this is not what I was expecting at all.

It's got a barn on one end.

And there was just speechless at first, like, oh, my god.

And then Michael said, well, Tripp, this ain't going to work.

Yeah, maybe you can fight over here.

But we played the cards that we were dealt,

and it was one of those times where we turned chicken

into chicken salad.

The transformation of this place is just, it's phenomenal.

If you'd have seen it the day before, you would have never expected it to look the way it did.

Taker came in the next day with AJ, walked him through it, what we were thinking.

All right, do your thing.

Oh god, I couldn't breathe in there!

Taker and AJ both thought it was great concepts and ideas, so went to Vince.

The pictures will shoot in cinematic, we'll do it with multiple cameras, kind of ran them

deeper through the creative and he was like, do it.

We got extremely lucky in the sense that we were able to go off-site and do this match

off-site because of where the story developed and the severity and how personal it became

I don't think that you can have a wrestling match,

which we always envision.

It turned out to be probably the best thing

that we could have done.

It was about, I don't know, a 45, 50-minute drive

from the site of the boneyard to the performance center.

And we were on our way back.

I was in the car with Triple H, Michael Hayes.

My phone started to ring.

And I looked down, and it was my niece.

And then something just told me in my head,

said, you need to answer that call.

And it was probably the last ring

before it was going to send it to voicemail,

and I hit it.

And I said, hey, what's going on?

She goes, my dad, my brother, Tim, he says,

my dad had a heart attack.

I was like, oh, wow.

I said, OK, what hospital did they send him to?

He lives outside of Austin and lived.

I asked her, I said, uh, what hospital did they, they send him to?

He said, no, uncle Mark, he's gone. He didn't make it. And, uh,

it was, uh,

In the middle of all this stuff going on,

WrestleMania, you know, when everything goes perfect,

it's hectic and stressful.

But now I have to call all my brothers

and let them know, and then call my mother.

Knowing that...

what that was going to do to her and not be able to be there.

It's just another indication of how important being present with your family is

because you just never know what's going to happen. So it was an extremely rough day.

It was hard, too, going to the next day

with the loss of my brother.

It's just as fresh as it can be.

And then, you know, you're in a boneyard match,

and everything's centered around being buried.

And it's just like, man, you know, it makes it tough.

But at that point, the show must go on.

And OK, how do we make this great?

I didn't think you'd show up.

Hey, does Michelle know you're out this late?

She let you come out.

Hey, I took the liberty of digging your grave for you.

Doesn't it look nice?

You dug your own grave, sir.

You think so?

Yeah, I know, sir.

You think so?

Come on, old man.

Yeah.

Come on.

Let's see what you got.

We got enough for you.

Yeah.

Come on.

Boom.

Get up, boy.

You wanted this.

Come on.

Boneyard match, 25-minute fight scene, and they beat the crap out of each other.

it was in a different format, you know when things are that good. I was really happy with

the bike element. That's a cool thing there, like he's had this hellacious fight.

through my head as I'm riding off.

This may be the last time I do this.

It was a difficult night

and it was ever been as rough as it looked.

Five minutes into shooting,

I put my arm through the hearse side window.

It chews up my arm, so we got to stop shooting immediately.

Just kind of wash it off a little bit.

He got color early.

His arm was a crimson mask.

So they got to clean my arm out, dig the pieces of glass

out of my arm.

What happens when you film that way is you get started,

and then there's the stoppage.

They've got to switch cameras around, they've got to switch lighting around.

And for me, with where I'm at physically,

just standing in one place is the worst.

It allows that

Adrenaline to come down a little bit and then it allows whatever is that that's hurting like okay. Yeah, all right

Yeah, that's gonna be bad tomorrow

It was just a really long night and we wrapped it about 5 a.m. I

Knew the things that we were filming and the things that we were doing we're gonna be cool

And then when I saw the final product, I mean it was like while this turned out really cool

And then the feedback, that was icing on the cake.

Everyone had nothing but positive things to say about it,

and that's very rare.

The performances in this were just phenomenal.

Physical, demanding, trash talking was spot on,

selling the storytelling, all of it.

And I think all that aura and mystique of the Undertaker was back.

If for no other reason, it was successful just for that.

With your ass and your break.

My specialty is storytelling.

If you look back at that build-up, the payoff with the match,

I mean, that's storytelling at its best.

Cut.

Break.

Is it what I envisioned when I said yes to the match?

Absolutely not.

But it was damn good.

And damn good was what I was looking for.

It's like, how do you top that?

There's no pressure out here. Just, you know, it's time to relax and enjoy yourself and

forget about all the other stuff that goes on in the world. Slow down. Slow down, exactly.

I feel like the more that we get out here, the more he's not gonna want to leave. And the more

maybe he'll be at peace with whatever decision he makes, knowing that he has this to come to. And I

Not a worry in the world and that's where we're at fishing on the river worrying about catching a fish

Yeah, I'd rather worry about you catching a fish than worried about you getting concussed

Breaking a bone. Let's do an eye socket

Considering everything that was going on I feel very fortunate that we were able to do the boneyard match

Was different but still taxing on the body

By the end of that shoot, I felt like, you know, I had done a 45-minute match.

I mean, that was a rough week, so Tim, Mark's brother, passed us away.

And then we went home, and it was that Sunday night that my nephew, Rhett McCool, tragically passed away in a car accident.

Just graduated high school.

But that's when you get really grateful for the family.

Even before my brother passed Kobe Bryant's death

It was amazing how that struck home

You know made me realize it like I'm not getting this time back and it's time to be present and give home

What I give the business

You should never know you never know when your numbers gonna get called

That's what life's about to hear her giggles. Hey love you come over here

Were you cheering for daddy or for AJ?

No, forget it. I'm out of here.

I'm glad I beat him. I'm glad I beat him like I did then.

I don't want to miss out on anything else because I feel like I have to have this certain match to walk away.

My career, my legacy, it speaks for itself and I'm happy with it.

At the end of the day, that's really, that's really all that matters.

And I have this other life that I need to go and experience and enjoy the fruits of my

labor and enjoy the blessings that I have in my life and my children.

He left a legacy a long time ago.

Long, long time ago.

It didn't matter if he never stepped in the ring these past five or six years.

He left his legacy.

That is stamped.

And I think making that transition to where his identity is Mark Calloway versus Undertaker,

I think it's rough.

And I think now he trusts himself more and to move into that avenue.

I believe I'm at a place now, post-Boneyard.

It's like just one hellacious battle against one of the best in the business.

Here you are climbing on your motorcycle and taking off.

There was a lot of thought, a lot of emotion that went through my head.

One of those is being, are you happy enough with that?

It was just a powerful moment.

And you don't necessarily always get those.

Man, if there was ever a perfect ending to a career, that right there is it.

You know, when I come back, I guess time only tell their case of emergency break glass you pull out the undertaker.

I mean, I would have to consider that.

Never say never, but at this point in my life and in my career, I might have no desire to get back in the ring.

I got a pit in my stomach right now.

I'm at a point.

This time, the cowboy really rides away.

There's nothing left for me to conquer.

There's nothing left for me to accomplish.

The game has changed.

It's time for new guys to come up.

The time just seems right.

I think this documentary has helped me discover that.

I mean, it's really opened my eyes to the bigger picture

and it's allowed me to not judge myself as harshly on these last few years.

and to see things on a broader scale.

My peers, you know, given their insight,

really got a genuine sense that they care for me

and want the best for me.

It's been very humbling allowing this part of me

to come out and have people accept it.

I've only given them the Undertaker.

They hadn't.

They haven't got Mark Calloway.

all signs there that they've accepted Mark Calloway.

I can do more good outside the ring now than I can inside.

And I'm finally at a place where I'm able to accept that.

And I'm okay with it.

I've been very blessed to have two families.

My wife and my children.

And then my family on the road.

I still feel twenty-five

Most of the time

I still raise a little cane

with a moose

Red Heart, Mick Foley

Obviously the mayor, Cain, Edge

Obviously, I can't name everybody, leave somebody out, but it's important to know how much you guys meant to me.

Not only a professional level, but on a personal level.

So many people that I consider true, great friends, and I just can't thank you guys enough.

Obviously, Vince always had my back, and I have to say, thank you.

I've considered myself blessed to be able to do something for as long as I've been able to do it.

This is a tough life and it's a rough life and you have to have it within you to want to pursue it.

You have to have a genuine love for what you do and you have to have a genuine love for wrestling

Because this business is all about heart

Awesome is the only word I could think to describe this undertaker

Hear the term lightning in a bottle and every once in a while if you make it to the top you've caught it

But man he caught it for like what 30 years

That always raised the bar

His work ethic, his ability, his talent.

And honestly, the way that he handled himself.

I think he's the godfather of professional wrestling.

Someone people can fight in, someone people trust.

Through all of it, he was like the rock.

As the waves are pounding the shore,

you have the rock that never moved and always stood firm.

That was him.

Absolutely mesmerizing the magnificence that is the fabled the legendary undertaker.

I've devoted most of my adult life to this business and I wouldn't change a thing.

All the injuries and surgeries and everything I mean it I wouldn't change any of it.

It's all part of my story it's all part of the things that helped shape the person that I am today

I've been very blessed to have great guys to work with

I'm gonna be around but I still want to miss you guys and most of you already do miss I

Don't know one wrestler. There's like, you know what he's a piece of work him. That's guy. I can't stand

It's an honor to call him one of my friends. He's my brother

There's only one Mark Calloway that could do what he does in the ring

Literally would be a different life had he and I not crossed paths

He put me on the map he put a lot of people in the map

I fought against him probably more than anybody in my career.

He never had an off night, ever.

I learned a lot from that dude, and I love him, and I respect him.

The bar for respect is the Undertaker, and everybody else down here.

It doesn't happen without them, it doesn't happen without the fans

buying into this character and holding it so near and dear to their heart.

I never tried to just mail it in.

Every time that I went out, I went out

to do the best that I could.

This capacity crowd, ladies and gentlemen,

and all of the presence of the Undertaker

and all of the creatures of the night

have been a strength behind this man.

I hope they realize what it meant for me

to go out night after night and perform in front of them.

How much their love and their energy.

So many nights is what got me through.

I can't think of a better way to spend the last 30 plus years of my life

than performing for the people that have followed me all these years.

To ride the edge of a lightning bolt for 30 years, the way he has

has been nothing short of phenomenal.

He's given his life to this business, and he'll be remembered forever.

I don't think there'll ever be anybody like him.

The character, the performances,

his legacy is that there'll never be another.

It was the iconic and greatest legacy of all time.

I mean, an absolutely amazing career.

And you should be extremely proud.

Mark, I'm proud of you.

So proud.

There's no question Mark has made the best of every opportunity.

Sending chills up and down the spine!

Let us begin with the most auspicious origin story of the phenome.

Involving a mysterious egg of gigantic proportions.

This is about the time we were building for a survivor series survivor series is always in November

You know right around Thanksgiving

So now they got this giant egg right and now I'm like, oh, no

Oh, no, I just knew it. I knew it to my core that

was gonna come out of that egg. I was just like, oh man, I'm gonna be Eggman. I'm gonna

be Egghead. He's gonna make me shave my head and shave my eyebrows. I'm gonna be the Eggman.

So I'm just like totally stressed out about, you know, getting the phone call and having

to be Eggman. Sure enough, one day the phone rings, so I answered the phone.

Hello, there was no caller ID at the time or any of that business, so, you know, it's like hello, is this the Undertaker?

You know, and it took me a second to process, like, okay, that's, I'm pretty sure that's Vince.

And he called me Undertaker. I didn't, nothing like Eggman.

Yes, sir. Yes. Yes. This is the undertaker like I had no idea what undertaker

his vision was

You know anything about it all I knew was it wasn't Eggman and I wasn't coming out of that egg

It was like a sense of

Eggman was not to be instead

A denizen from Death Valley, the Undertaker, made his spectacular and chilling debut at the 1990 Survivor Series.

Holy cow! Look at the size of that ham-hawk!

And last, the dead man had arrived and was charting his path of destruction.

A path which ran through the world's most famous arena, Madison Square Garden.

No journey is without its perils as the way into the garden proved a mighty

challenge even for the FINA.

The first couple of times that I came to the garden you know everybody was

established with the character. You know so we had to originally we walked out

the side we had to go across the street to the parking garage. Back then we had

no security other than the you know the NYC police.

You got to get through that ocean of people and you know, you basically had to fend for yourself and get into your car

You're stuck in traffic with just thousands of people beating on your rent a car

You know thinking about man, did I take the deductible out or did I take the lost damage waiver out on this thing?

They came up with the idea Paul bearer and I would go over and park our car

I think it was a remada that had this parking garage and we would go over there

They would send the ambulance in there.

We would get in the ambulance.

They would bring us in in the ambulance.

Nobody would see us.

And then, you know, usually we were on last or next to last.

So we were at the end of the night.

So they'd put us back in the ambulance

and then they'd take us back to the Ramada.

It worked good for a couple of years.

And then one night, I mean, it was a cold New York winter

night and we're cruising across town.

And then we roll up to the Ramada parking.

I swear there had to have been 2,500 fans there.

Somehow it got out.

Somebody figured it out.

So we are stuck standing there, waiting on our car.

And there's 2,500 fans just on top of us.

It was like, well, it was nice while it lasted,

but this gig is up.

And now we had to figure out a new strategy to how

to get in and out of the garden.

There's no place that I hate getting into more than the garden.

No place I'd rather work once I got in it, you know?

I mean, that's just, that was just truth.

It was great once you got in this hide, but man, the process, it was exhausting.

A bit of smoke and mirrors on the part of the phenom

and his trusty manager, Paul Bearer.

While the Undertaker's public persona was often shrouded in mystery,

A select few were invited to be part of the dead man's inner circle.

The price of admission, some good old fashioned camaraderie, and a lot of whiskey, which often

led to an interesting night.

We just put this disclaimer out there that this was a long, long time ago, and so we invited a bunch of people back to our hotel room.

We were at a party, we were drinking, and a lot of them missed the names that were there, but a lot of people were there.

So there's probably 15 people in the room, and we're still drinking.

Well, he has this really cool Stetson River Boat Gambler hat.

I was like, man, that is a really cool hat.

He goes, you know, and he's like looking at himself in the mirror,

like, you like that?

Man, I just got that, you know?

I said, yeah, that's sharp, man.

I said, I'm going to find one like that.

Through the course of the night, he comes over to me and he goes,

he goes here.

And I decided that I was going to give my hat to him.

Gives me the hat right and he's like no big dog. He looks better on you. I'm like no it looks better on you

No, you're taking that. I'm giving it to you. You got it. You have to take it. I'm like no that's your hat

That's a cool hat looks good on you

Thanks, but no thanks kind of a deal and so it became a thing where no you wear it no

I wear you're gonna take the hat. No, I'm not taking your hat

So he gives me the hat goes in the bathroom and locks the door

So, you know, I'm there doing my business, and all of a sudden it's like, I'm like,

what in the world?

I turn around, he's hitting the door, the door's not breaking, the door frame, it's

coming at me.

Then he's standing there, you know, he's like, you're taking the damn hat.

So I take the door, and I've got to put my head through it.

I take the door off my head, go out on the balcony.

sling this door, I'm looking back at you know everybody like I showed him right I

turned back around and that Joker's in a three-point stance and he he got he heard

hut he blasts me and lands on top of me between the two beds we went after it

man and I'm telling you we're good friends but we're really going after it

I mean, like two big, giant kids, right?

He says, no, you're going to take the hat.

You know, and I'm like, no, I'm not taking the hat.

And so, but he won't let me up either.

And I can't get out.

And I'm sorry.

Finally, it was like, okay, I'll take the hat.

So that's all you had to say.

It got up, found the hat, it had been stepped on already.

Put the hat on.

Thank you.

Thank you for the hat.

Sounds ridiculous. I know, but I just you had to be there, but the moral to the story is

He took the hat so I won because he took that

That was a pretty typical night

We had lots of nights like that

Typical family drama a

Moment of celebration between two brothers quickly turns into a night of chaos and destruction

In the end, the infamous Bone Street crew came out stronger and more united than ever before.

Two warriors, hardened by years of mileage together.

The road is home to many of the Deadman's greatest tales.

Like our next story, a tale of two wayward travelers, lost on a path to parts unknown.

Mark Callaway, the person, is one of my best friends

and one of the best people you'll ever meet.

Genuine, really salt of the earth,

but hardworking guy, true professional

in every sense of the word.

I'll tell you, this is a funny story.

We were in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Swung early on with The Undertaker and Brother Love still.

So we wanted to get out of TV pretty quick.

We jump into the car and we want to get from Chattanooga to Atlanta, that was our goal.

We start hauling ass and we get lost.

Not knowing our way around too well, we end up in a pretty seedy neighborhood and a pretty

sketchy part of town.

So we pull up into a gas station.

I roll the window down, I'm in the passenger side.

You know, Bruce, hey buddy, hey you think you can give us some directions to the interstate?

And the guy comes up and is like, oh well, maybe you can help me out.

Well, I don't know, you know, maybe, you know, maybe if I had, like, you know, 10, 15 bucks,

maybe I could help you, maybe, I don't know.

Guys start coming around the car like they're gonna try and mess with us.

He can see Bruce, but he can't see me at all.

And I'm thinking, oh, man, this is gonna be bad.

So as he leans down, I give him the old...

Guy backs up, almost falling down and goes, man!

What's wrong with that dude?

He looks like he just killed somebody.

Yeah, I can hear him mumbling it.

Yeah, that man, he looked dead.

Okay, listen, this is what you guys got to do.

You're gonna go down here, two blocks,

you're gonna turn right,

that's gonna take you right to the highway.

Y'all need to get the hell out of here.

True story, and it was absolutely hilarious,

and we just kind of took off.

A mere glance from the phenom

is all it takes to make mortal men quiver.

Among the dead man's travels, some have taken on mythological status, like this next saga,

an infamous excursion around the world that will be forever known as the flight from hell.

We were in Birmingham. I had done a handicap match with Stone Cold and Triple H.

Somewhere through the course of the match,

I take one of Austin's knee braces right in the side of the head,

dings me up a little bit, and it split the top part of my ear in half.

There was a noise ordinance, so we had to take off before a certain time,

so I was presented with the option of

Stay there in the UK, get my ear sewed up and taken care of there and then fly home the next day or fly with the rest of the crew on the charter.

Obviously I opted to fly back to the States on the charter.

I had a headache, my ears, throbbing, everything.

So I'm kind of in and out of consciousness and it's just one of those flights where

The boys were having a really good time.

This is your captain speaking.

Vince was on the flight.

And Vince keeps trying to take down Kurt Angle and vice versa,

and they're having this contest the whole way back from the UK.

And I'm just kind of laying in my seat,

and all of a sudden, you know, I feel this kind of bumping around my feet.

And I look down, and Kurt's on top of Vince.

And I'm like, what the hell?

Why is Kurt attacking Vince?

So I just like popped out of my seat,

put a rear naked choke on Kurt.

Kurt's final words were like, take, you're choking me out.

And by that time, you know, everybody's like,

no, they're playing, they're playing.

So I let go, got my seat, fell back asleep.

From what I understand and from the looks of the plane

when I did wake up at the end,

It was a pretty wild flight.

A flight from hell indeed.

Lesson learned.

Do not cross the boss.

The Undertaker was usually the calm within the storm that surrounded him.

Except when the dead man's affinity for fire

put a fellow Bone Street crew member in a heated situation.

I guess some of the fondest memories are in hotel rooms, just playing cards.

All the BSK boys, that core group of guys, we were always together.

Yokozuna, he was always in a good mood, always wanted to play cards or dominoes.

We were in Kuwait together.

Now they don't have adult beverages over there.

We were in my room playing cards.

And we were all kind of getting a little bit stir crazy.

I remember taking a match, and I'm setting them on fire

and flicking the matches and trying to hit people with them.

Pig yolk was on the side of the table from me,

and I flicked one.

It went right over his head.

I didn't realize that it landed in the back of his hair.

Suddenly, I start seeing all this smoke coming up.

I said, well, it turned around, right?

And I turn around, sure enough, his hair is on fire.

And then it was just like five guys just pounding him to death,

just trying to put the fire out.

But it didn't worth getting some free shots on him.

He laughed it off.

Just a great dude, man.

I really miss him.

Encouraging the wrath of the great Yokozuna

is not for the faint of heart.

The Dead Man's action is no doubt demanded retribution.

Tale for another time.

In the WWE locker room, as in the world at large,

there are matters that can only be adjudicated by going before a magistrate.

In the WWE, there was only one entity worthy to sit upon the bench of justice,

and pass down the ultimate judgment to those who stand before him.

What was wrestlers court?

Ah, I love it.

A wrestlers court was a mediation process in the locker room,

which would often just turn it into entertainment for the guys.

Boys will bring up charges.

For example, you're traveling together, everybody splits up their trans,

and maybe you didn't pay your fair share of trans.

The case would have to be heard in Russell's court to determine guilt or innocence.

The offended person had to get himself a lawyer.

And then, of course, they had a prosecuting attorney who oftentimes is JBL,

who's great at it, but you had the hanging judge.

Every now and then you might have been a choice of who lawyers were,

but there was never a choice about who was the judge.

There was one guy that was judge, jury, executioner,

godfather of everyone, and that was Undertaker.

He's one of the guys that people went to.

When there were issues in the dressing room,

there were problems.

He was the great mediator.

He was the judge.

People thought that much of him.

I don't know if anybody has more respect than an undertaker.

Rustler's Court was the lighthearted way

to get the message across that you're screwing up.

And your co-workers know that you're screwing up,

and they don't much appreciate it.

You've kind of made your bed, now you got to lie in it.

Well, I was brought up.

At wrestlers' court one time, Al Snow and I were judged guilty of leaving Bob Holly hanging at the airport while we went on carnival rides.
