Dear Red Shoes, I don't remember when I first heard the story.
My grandmother was from Russia and had lots of tales to tell.
Maybe she told me on the long winter nights tucked up close to the fire.
All I know for sure is that it's always with me, right beneath my eyes when I go
to sleep.
It begins with a war in heaven.
A battle of the angels.
And one because he was powerful and proud and had dreams of his own.
Earthly dreams.
Was cast out.
Vanished.
A child of fury.
He descended into darkness.
Tumbling through black skies, dodging lightning.
The rest of us don't know why we're here.
He didn't either.
He felt rage when he hit the ground.
And hunger.
Wide -eyed ravenous hunger.
his empty arms.
His spirit growled like a lion on the prowl. He wanted to taste, to feast,
to devour.
Here on earth between heaven and hell he hungered to be mortal hunger to feel
what mortals feel
I've
never made love to an angel before
Strong hearts.
You're too pretty to pay for it, darling.
Take me into your heart my angel.
Little did he know, until then, that lightning still lived in his
veins.
His hunger grew and his rage grew.
For now he knew what his punishment was.
He could hunger, but never taste.
He could hunger, but never ever kiss.
Women died at the touch of...
Like I just jumped out of one of those romance novels that I read Saturday
night.
Put me to sleep.
One thing I hate is being alone on Saturday night.
Being a kid, I see my mom and dad argue in the other room.
Watching my sister and her boyfriend on the front porch.
When I grew up, I swore I'd never be alone on a Saturday night.
Fortunately...
There's some things you can control.
There's some things you can't.
Saturday night.
You understand what I'm saying?
Then again, vows are meant to be spoken.
Rules are made to be broken.
Maybe it was the fact that the fruit was forbidden that made him crave it so.
lost in savage darkness, battling for his soul.
Still, he hungered to be mortal, and to feel what mortals feel.
And so he roamed,
I married you because my father promised my hand to you.
Because he was intent to you.
I have your payment.
Until one night, he spotted a bride and groom leaving their wedding party.
She was kissed and did not die.
Maybe she was immortal.
Part God like himself, he reasoned.
Burning with hunger, he wanted her.
What a duel.
Killed to have her.
Captured, she was set free at last.
Held fast in his arms.
She was missed.
And the hunger grew.
She felt it too.
For those moments, lightning lived in both of their veins.
He took what he wanted.
Not just because of his hunger, but because she wanted it too.
Not just because of their hunger, but because of something... something more.
Something he never felt before.
Found here in human flesh.
Banished.
This was the first time in all of his thousands of years that he felt truly
an angel.
Maybe this is what he hungered for.
Maybe this is why he was sent from above.
To feel at last.
what gods and humans feel.
To feel for the first time.
And with that emotion came others, heartbreak,
loss.
Angel, truly free at last.
He carried her as far as he could, and then could go no further.
For having felt a human's due, he was mortal now.
His wish was finally granted.
