Mumbai, the most populated city in India, stretches across the country's

southwestern coast and is a melting pot for people from all across the region.

Formerly known as Bombay, the city is a sprawling mix of extreme wealth and

abject poverty.

where over 18 million people come together to work and play in the

heat.

I would start my journey here and then head north to the holy city of Varanasi,

just in time for the annual holy festival celebrations.

Arriving in India for the first time, It was a huge surprise to be met by crowds

of people outside my hotel.

I had a feeling this would be the first of many surprises to come.

I was heading to Dharavi, one of Mumbai's most infamous slums, but

would be an adventure in itself.

I've travelled to many places in the world, but I can honestly say I've never

seen traffic as crazy as in Mumbai.

It makes James 25 look like a bicycle leg.

There you go. Thank you.

Thank you.

Deravi.

One of the world's largest plums.

Home to over half a million people, Dharavi is known for its recycling

where hundreds of tons of the city's waste is regenerated.

I wanted to meet some of the local residents and see if I could put my own

recycling methods to the test. In this area, they do a lot of recycling.

Where you take something old and make it new again.

What can you recycle?

Can you recycle this matchbox?

Or this...

The can?

I want to show you my way of recycling.

The Ravi was not what I expected.

Although the level of poverty is undeniable, the area has approximately 5

small businesses, from pottery to textiles to recycling, and an estimated

turnover of half a billion dollars.

If there was ever a community that had created something out of nothing, this

was it.

Namaste.

Salaam alaikum. The response you will directly get. If you say salaam alaikum,

then the response you will directly get. Salaam alaikum. Ah, cool.

So, salaam alaikum.

Salaam alaikum.

Awesome. What is this place for?

This is a newspaper.

Newspaper. Newspaper place. If someone read a newspaper, they cannot throw it.

They sell it.

Then it's recycled.

Ah, that makes sense. Yeah.

Let me get some pieces.

How can you do like this?

The only problem, see on this side it's all mixed up.

It's not right.

And on this side Watch Watch

As I walked deeper into Dharavi, the intricate network of streets and

opened up into a big square, which I was later told is used as a laundry for the

community.

As I took a walk around, I met a group of girls who lived in the area.

Are you girls from Mumbai?

Yes. Yes. And you?

I'm from England, a place called Bradford.

You've never heard of Bradford, right? No, no.

If you come to England, go to Bradford.

What is all this stuff?

Is it... It's for the drying. It's a drying good place for the people.

Oh, for drying?

Yeah. Okay.

Could you just hand me one of these?

Right now you are 30.

It's unbelievable.

Anyone cannot do this kind of thing. You just bring a saree. How can you bring

that? Through a small cloth.

It was unbelieving for me. How can you do that?

I was in Mumbai and I travelled across town to meet Bollywood actor Irfan Khan,

who has starred in movies such as Life of Pi, Slumdog Millionaire and

Hi everyone.

Namaste.

How is everybody?

Great. You good? I feel good, but today I woke up and my voice is disappearing

and it's not magic.

See the coin?

Two rupees.

Take it and make it go...

From there to there.

But this time, you'll see it go visibly. From here to here. Yeah?

Visibly.

Well, we can do this with something else.

Maybe some fruit.

Give him some fruit.

I want everyone just to focus on the Lamb.

How did he do that?

How did he do that?

I don't know.

We could see the lemon right there.

The lemon was right there. The lemon disappeared from there.

There was nothing in his hand. Then suddenly we saw the lemon disappearing

the shelf and coming into his hand.

It was like...

That afternoon I travelled to a small fishing village overlooking the vast

Arabian Sea.

The area was home to a tight -knit community of fishermen and I was told

I wanted to see the real Mumbai, this would be a good place to start.

While the men are out at work, the local kids play along the narrow streets and

alleyways.

Bye -bye.

Namaste. Namaste.

Can I try something with one of you? Yes.

Okay, maybe with you.

What is your name?

Anike. Anike.

Okay, Anike, just close your eyes like this.

Just relax, relax, relax.

Now what?

After a hard day's work out at sea, many of the fishermen gather for a drink

along the shore.

Yeah, I'm gonna show you something okay this one, okay?

Do you have a lighter?

Can you light it?

Yeah, can you light it?

This

happen

is unbelievable.

You cannot believe this how he has done it.

The next day I headed down to the thieves market near

Bendy Bazaar in the south of the city.

which is one of the biggest flea markets in the world and sells everything from

vehicle parts to incense sticks.

Hold your hand out.

And just hold it tight.

Just concentrate on the stick, but look closely.

The next day,

I learned that a video of me levitating a buoy in one of Mumbai's fishing

villages had spread across India.

And before I knew it, my journey had turned into a barrage of press

meetings and public appearances as I raced back and forth across the city.

It was almost time to head north to Varanasi, but before I left, I wanted to

one last thing.

I'm Dynamo, nice to meet you.

I'm Yaduraj, nice to meet you. Yaduraj, nice to meet you.

Hi, Isandli.

Isandli, nice to meet you.

Is it okay if I take a needle?

I

just

need one. Just take one needle.

That one?

Okay.

And can I take this bud?

I want you

to

take the needle and just place it on my tongue.

Hold your finger up like this

Thank you.

He put the needle on his thumb.

He gulped the needle. He took a chair.

around his finger and ate that thread in mouth and when he just pulled things

out the thread and middle together came out and what was it crazy something

great i don't think he's human

Varanasi, the holiest of the seven sacred cities, sits on the banks of the

Ganges in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

One of the oldest inhabited places on the planet, Varanasi is home to the

god Shiva the Destroyer, and people travel from far and wide to be cremated

and have their ashes thrown into the mighty river.

Although it seems like a peaceful place, once you venture further into the city,

things get a little more... chaotic.

Namaste. Namaste.

Namaste. How are you? I'm good. How are you?

You're making me a bracelet?

Nice.

I want to make you one now.

I think in red.

Maybe.

yeah some black yeah i'm gonna get a few yeah perfect black

and red yeah yes very good very good very good yeah just hold your hand out

this this will look nice right

In a few seconds, he makes the bracelet.

The bracelet takes time to make, but it's just magic.

How is it possible?

It's a kind of beautiful magic, huh? The first time we had saw that kind of

magic in our life.

Along the banks of the country,

Pilgrims and locals come to pay their respects to the great river.

I met up with a few of them on the brightly coloured steps that lead to one

Varanasi's main temples.

Nice to meet you man. Nice to meet you man.

Does any of you have any coins?

You have to bring all coins, okay?

I'm going to use two coins.

Okay, two coins. Two coins.

Two coins.

Okay.

Watch.

My God! My God!

How possible?

It is not possible for the common people.

Later that evening, I took a walk along Varanasi's backstreets which burst into

life after dark, with festival goers.

Sadhu holy men and street vendors.

Let me have a look.

Excuse me, can I use some of this bread?

Just

a

little.

Thank you.

Just hold your hand up.

Five.

Do you have any matches?

Can you take the matches?

Can you light the match?

Oh my god!

That's amazing!

He burned it.

After the burn of this rope, it will be back like before, in one piece.

It's like impossible.

Gola Dinanath Market is thought to be one of the biggest outdoor spice markets

in Asia and its narrow streets are filled with stalls selling medicinal

and spices and giant bags of dried chilies.

Just one, just one, yes?

It's dried chili, yeah? Dried chili. Yeah, yeah. Yes?

You see?

Watch.

Check it.

Check it out.

It's fresh.

See? It's fresh.

Step forward.

What's your name?

I'm Dynamo. Nice to meet you.

Just hold your hand out.

Right here, yes? I want to take... Can I take a peppercorn?

Yes.

Just one.

You see this?

Yes.

Hold it tight.

What?

Done.

Look, look.

We'll try with more, with more, with more.

I take this?

Yes?

Okay.

Watch.

It's made of fire.

It's made of a whole fly.

It's made of a whole fly.

Monday, 17th March.

Holy Festival begins.

As the clock strikes 10am, the city bursts into life with a huge carnival of

colour.

And Varanasi becomes shrouded under a multicolored haze. The revelers become

more and more intoxicated under the mid -morning sun.

As night fell, the festivities continued along the banks of the Ganges, as

pilgrims paid their respects to the mighty river.

As I continued my journey, I came across some sadhus who were meditating on the

small stone outcrop.

You see this?

There's nothing.

We'll try, we'll try more.

Yes?

Different.

What we have seen, what we have seen, in this paper, there is an

entrepreneur who creates the impossible in

the world's eyes.

It was my last night in India and I couldn't believe the things I'd seen

I'd arrived.

From the slums of Dharavi to the madness of Holi Festival, I'd never forget this

beautiful country or the kindness of its people who had welcomed me like one of

their own.

It was unbelievable for me. How can you do that?

We love you so, we love you.

As I stared out across the dark water, I started thinking about how deserted

this place had become.

The previous night had seen the banks of the river packed with pilgrims as

bonfires raged and thousands of candles were set free across the river.

But now, only a few people remained.

The bonfires and candles had long since gone out, and the night was closing in.

Although the festivities had ended, I spotted a man performing a fire ritual

the banks of the Ganges, the candlelight dancing in the night sky.

As I looked on, almost hypnotised by the flames, I realised that in a strange

way we are all responsible for keeping the light alive, especially in places

that need it the most.

So as the flames started to subside, I wanted to leave one last memory for the

few remaining people who sat along the river's edge.

See this?

See, it's burnt out.

Yeah? Watch.

Thank you for watching.

Uh huh.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.
