Ultimately, he was right. That became a trademark.

And again, like him, unique.

I didn't handle that winch. As a matter of fact, because he practiced so much,

he almost shot me one day.

We were in Las Vegas. He had just gotten the series. I was working at the

Tropicana Hotel, and he was practicing, you know, twirling that gun.

And I was coming home with a bag full of groceries in the afternoon, and he

went, watch this, honey. And he shot.

You thought it didn't have a bullet in there, but it went right through my bag.

And I said, oh my God, are you trying to kill me?

What you're looking at here is called a mare's leg.

This was a gun that was popularized by Steve McQueen in The Bounty Hunter.

In the original movie, he actually was a 4440 caliber.

A little uniqueness was that was a real popular caliber during the cowboy era.

It was actually a black powder round, although in the movies they used

because they wouldn't be able to get the film through the black powder.

Can you hit anything with this?

It's happening.

And this one is particularly a 4440.

which was true to the caliber at the time.

It would hold six rounds, six rounds of ammo.

And, of course, in the movies it had the loop on it because he was able to fling

it back and forth to load it and to unload it.

This would have been, in the movie, it would have been designed as a rifle that

had been cut down.

In other words, they would have taken a rifle, he would have had a rifle, and he

would have just cut the stock off of it, cut the barrel off of it to make it.

to make it this size.

And then the holster he used was a clip type that would allow it to be

basically clip it here and just hook onto the ring.

So it would hook onto that ring and then he would have it on and then he could

just pull it up off the ring and whip it out and be able to shoot it as fast as

he can.

And then this part would be tied around his leg.

So it would hold it in place so when he pulled the gun out, he wouldn't pull the

whole holster up and everything like that. So as a gunfighter and a bounty

hunter at the time and a trade that he lived in, he wanted to have something

that was quick and removable and something he could shoot and a lot of

firepower. This would be a very powerful round coming out of this particular,

probably even a little bit more so than you would shoot out of a pistol.

The advantage with this was at the time it was a very powerful round.

although there was a lot of pistols at that time that were .44 caliber, .44 -40

caliber. But the thing about this was that he would be able to leverage so

that he could shoot a lot of rounds real quick.

And, of course, Steve McQueen was very accurate with it and did very quite

But he would spin it and shoot it. You know, he'd flip it and pull it up and

shoot it by one hand.

It looks good. Yeah, it looks good.

It's Hollywood.

In California and in a lot of states in America, if this gun was to be cut down

from a 92 or a 94, 1894 Winchester, and you just cut it, it would be illegal.

But how they make this pistol to make it legal for both California and the

United States is you take a new receiver, just the main body of the

right here, and as long as it's never had a barrel in it and it's never had

kind of stock on it, They can make it however they want. They can actually

it into a lever -action pistol.

So basically, in the eyes of our government and in California, this is

considered a lever -action pistol. It's not considered a rifle.

Because of the history involved in this with Steve McQueen and the movie and the

TV series Bounty Hunter, it made it real famous.

Again, most of the people can't get these in this country.

Very few people actually make them.

I've been working for ISS, a prop rental house for motion picture and

television. We serve the industry that way. We try to have a large warehouse

full of unusual things, and we rent those.

to mainly the media industry, which needs these at the drop of a hat, at a

moment's notice. We will do that for them. We will have it all. We will pull

props for them and write it up and have it ready, and they can just send a

driver to pick it up. We try to make their job very, very easy. And this is

the prop master and for the decorator and for the art directors of these

different mediums. These are mayor's legs.

They're in caliber 4440.

The gun was manufactured here at ISS.

We took a full -size rifle or carbine and cut it down and modified it. Got

research pictures from some of the old movies. We tried to make a good

composite between other movies that have used similar guns. We didn't actually

try and copy something very exact as the Steve McQueen gun, but this was a

good... basic representation, and yeah, came together very fast. They work real

well, and we're real happy with them. We've had these for quite a while, but

these went out on, the last show they were out on was a feature film called

Serenity. It's based on the TV series Firefly, which was pretty successful.

They've added a little brass scope there.

The look of the characters in this movie was, of course, very Western.

Great little guns. It takes a little bit of practice to know how to fire these

and draw from the holster effectively, but it turned out to be a nice little

for us, and hopefully they'll go out on other movies.
