And among the many challenges tough guy Josh Randall faces as a bounty hunter,

the most daunting are with the strong -willed women of Wanted, Dead or Alive.

Gender roles in Wanted, Dead or Alive are predictable enough for the Wild

and most of the series' female characters play a secondary role to a

an employer.

Yet, they manage to stand out.

Theirs is a civilizing voice, one that lends a touch of elegance to an

unruly world.

In the episode titled, Estrelita.

Josh Randall finds out that looks can be deceiving.

It's my fault that he's waiting to be hanged.

Figures. You can do everything you can to get him out of it, right?

Rita Lynn plays a woman seeking to atone for her wrongdoing by saving her

husband from the gallows.

Randall dices her up.

But Estrelita has a few tricks up her sleeve.

Despite his best effort, our hero is outwitted as she steals the money and

Michelle.

She gave me this.

That's how I knew you'd show up.

I love Jake Pringle, I think.

But there are so many men in Arizona and so little money.

to hear you were in town, Josh.

When Josh Randall sets out to help a friend get hit, his interactions with

women of the town provide classic, wanted, dead or alive material.

They don't back down.

In fact, nearly all stand up to him, or stand him up.

The female characters on Wanted Dead or Alive brush up against Josh Randall when

they need something from him.

Josh, help me.

Make him give the money back.

Sometimes what they need is easy to see, but we can never be sure if their

requests are harmless or if they're trying to help someone get away with

In the Healing Woman episode, Josh confronts Mrs. Summers about the

her young boy needs.

He speaks to her smoothly and calmly, in classic Josh Randall style, only to get

sucker -punched by her husband for his efforts.

Randall blusters that he won't be belittled in front of a woman.

But this isn't the last time the character walks away from a

a member of the opposite sex.

less confident than he arrived.

In fact, this is a reoccurring theme of the series, and it's a battle that

Randall and McQueen seem to enjoy.

Whether

she

plays a barmaid, a housewife, or a schoolteacher, The women of Wanted, Dead

Alive manage to bring out Josh Randall's softer side.

Yet even the most feminine character makes her own distinct mark. And the

profits from a cast of strong women.

Appearing as John Collier's wife in The Healing Woman, Virginia Gregg portrays

the typical American housewife who must go against her husband's word to help

her son.

Virginia is the template of a typical wanted dead -or -alive woman.

Her scenes are strong and compelling, and her character is full of goodwill

honesty.

I'll need plenty of boiling water.

Following her role on Wanted, Dead or Alive, Virginia Gregg goes on to appear

Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho and in a number of television series, including

Twilight Zone, Bonanza, Wagon Train, Happy Days, The Streets of San

and Dynasty.

Randall. Back known for her role selling Folgers coffee on television, Virginia

Christine is no stranger to a film set or to budding stars.

She plays in the Hollywood productions from High Noon to The Mummy's Curse and

Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I

In the episode titled The Matchmaker, Josh Randall tries to find a woman for

friend Charlie, a lonely mine owner who wants to get married. Charlie, I just

want you to do me a favor.

Anything, you just name it. I want you to meet somebody.

Who? Her name is Harriet Meacham. Boy, you've been out in the sun too long.

Josh suggests Virginia Christine's character, one Harriet Meacham, Charlie

rejects her.

Instead,

he marries a beautiful young lady who is out for his money.

But not before he pens a letter to John explaining how he would make a perfect

husband for Harriet.

Well, thank you very much, but I want to make some distance before it starts

getting dark.

In the episode Reckless, Jean Allison plays Madge Nelson, a bright -eyed

temptress and a bold woman who puts herself in the line of fire when a love

triangle turns into a case of murder.

I'm telling you, Madge.

When Madge's husband -to -be, Paul Bradley, is killed in an accident, the

victim's father seeks revenge.

He puts a price on the head of Tony Egan.

And in an act of desperation, Jean Allison throws herself in harm's way to

protect her friend.

Now look, why don't you just settle down, Mr. Bradley?

Allison's later career included featured roles on Gunsmoke, Starsky & Hutch, and

Charlie's Angels.

The Old West evokes images of fast -talking gunslingers. They'll shoot you

Josh Randall's world may be filled with thieves, crooks, and swindlers, but

sometimes in the Wild West, there's only one way to get something done.

The women of Wanted Dead or Alive

embody the spirit of the American West, and their example can only expand the

role of women in contemporary entertainment.
