The survivalists turn their focus to collecting

ideal materials for the daunting

primitive fire challenge.

At this point, I have the exact material I need.

Let's do this.

Primitive fire is gonna be a struggle,

but I've been collecting the materials that I need

to make a great bojo kit.

This is my time to prove I'm a force of nature

to be reckoned with out here.

To become the last one standing, you must continue

to master the elements. - Yep.

Today you will surrender your fire starter

and create primitive fire. - Woo!

You must empty your bags of any previously crafted

materials to create your fire.

What the [bleep]?

This competition just got a whole lot harder,

There goes this stuff.

I had my bow drill already done.

I can't use any materials that I collected.

Having to start from scratch

feels like a real kick in the nuts.

I had a fireboard with everything,

perfect spindle.

While the survivalists will be leaving their fire kits behind,

they will be able to use any assets they've earned

during the challenge.

Today is Friction Fire Day.

It's the day I've been dreading.

This is the hardest skill in survival.

- This is the big dog. - Friction fire.

My body can't do anymore.

It wiped me out. It sent me home.

I made a really good hand drill set out here

a few days ago that I cannot use today.

Just because I've done it before

does not mean I'm guaranteed to get it today.

You may use any cordage earned during this challenge.

- Ooh, lucky me. - Yep.

- Cheeny's got the gold stuff. - You got it.

- Yeah, baby. - I came here to win.

I didn't come here to go home. But Cheeny has

a advantage of advantages today.

She's the only person out here with paracord.

The other survivalists will be able to use any natural cordage

or jute rope that was provided to them

during previous challenges.

Once you have created fire, you must burn a rope

hanging from a tree to secure one of three maps

that will lead you to your next survival area.

- OK. - All right.

In today's multi-phase challenge,

the survivalists will need to collect materials

before moving on to phase two--

constructing their fire kits.

They will then proceed to the third phase,

building their fire, which they'll use

to release the map that will let them

move on to the last zone of the competition.

When three have succeeded, the remaining survivalists

will be immediately eliminated.

Oh, man! Game got real, guys.

Fate of the world's at stake today.

Fourth place today is going home,

but I'm not nervous and I'm confident.

I've already made a bow drill kit

and tested it out.

I know what materials are gonna work, and I know

where to go gather them now. - Friction fire.

It could send me home.

Even though I do feel prepared, I am not gonna act

overly confident.

I'm not gonna act in any way that makes people think

I got this.

The survivalists are now heading out to begin phase one

of the challenge-- collecting materials

they'll use to build their friction fire,

following in the footsteps

of Aboriginal Australian natives

who used similar resources to build primitive fire

centuries ago.

Right now, I have to focus

on finding my materials.

It took me a long time to find all these materials,

and I have to go and scavenge all over again.

But my speed and athleticism could be an advantage

to get this friction fire going.

Today is the day you cannot lose.

There is no option today, but to make it through.

This is my second chance.

Last year, I got hurt and I had to go home way before my time.

I injured my testicle.

Today, I have to force myself through this challenge.

Well, this pea bush here will make a great tinder.

So I may gather as much tinder as I can.

After getting eliminated for friction fire last year,

I was really mad, upset, depressed.

Getting a chance to redeem myself means everything.

And to this point, I've been kicking ass.

First, I'm gonna start with a bow drill.

I've done hand drill, very energy consuming,

and works your hands really hard.

Having been practicing and working

with these materials,

I kinda know what I'm looking for.

Both the hand drill and the bow drill

use the friction of a rotating spindle

on a notched fireboard to create fire.

The bow drill requires more materials,

but uses a bow to move the spindle faster

with less strain.

Hand drills are easier to make, but the survivalist

must provide all of the energy, so it taxes the muscles quickly

and takes a punishing toll on their hands.

Now, I just need to try to craft this all over again.

I mean, the sun's coming up, it's getting hot.

You do not wanna be running around in the midday here.

I've been doing bow drill

my entire life, basically, 35 years now.

You know, it's second nature to me.

But the hardest part is the heat

has been ever pressing on us out here.

People have gone home on stretchers

'cause of the heat.

There's a bigger pea bush that might have a dead branch

that'll make a fireboard.

I know Cheeny has that paracord,

and that's the biggest advantage you could have.

And Patrick is a beast.

He is not one to take lightly out here.

And Matt is the competitor.

It's gonna be a close competition.

And it is anybody's game today.

The wrong material for this is just a waste of time.

I have a feeling with the cordage I have,

I'm gonna have one go.

What I'm looking for here is one of these pea bush

to make a hand drill.

I tried a hand drill yesterday.

That hand drill made a fire in less than five minutes.

Today, if I can find the same material,

which is out here, there's gonna be a fire here

uh, before I even start to build up a sweat.

So a pea bush burns really easy.

What I need to do is find a nice, straight one.

The hand drill doesn't require a string,

but it does require the spindle to be as straight as possible.

That one's not bad right there.

Pretty straight.

There's different ways to make friction fire.

If you have paracord, I would say

always stick to the bow drill.

Right now, every second counts.

We gotta try to get just the right stuff.

Time to gather materials.

Looking for a pea bush.

It's got a pithy center.

I have an advantage here with the paracord.

That's what you need for bow drill.

Makes it a lot easier.

I literally have the one item that can seal my deal

for bow drill, but I'm going with hand drill.

I'm taking a big risk.

You know, making a hand drill, it is the harder method

to start a fire.

But right now, it's the one that makes the most sense,

given the environment and the materials.

A lot of people watching this are probably wondering,

"Why on earth would you go for hand drill?"

But I've already made one.

I've already practiced with one.

So, for me, the hand drill is the way to go.

This has got a pithy center.

This looks like a perfect bow.

Sturdy, with a nice little hook to it,

but not too much.

Patrick is the first competitor to gather his materials,

allowing him to move on to the next phase,

building his fire kit.

A soft piece of wood.

It's wide enough for me to...

use my spindle on.

Now I have a pea bush spindle

and a pea bush hearth board.

This wood, I felt it.

It's pretty soft.

Soft wood on soft wood is gonna be one of the easiest ways

for me to make an ember.

This is pretty sturdy.

I think I can make it into a bow drill.

I feel like if I can make it past Friction Fire,

I have a really good chance of winning that 100,000.

I need to find the right size spindle,

and these all look really good.

So I'm gonna take them all.

Sabotage!

It's time to play tough.

Time to play hard.

I wanna collect as much as possible

because the more I collect, the more I'm taking away

other people.

I have it in my possession. They don't.

Might be a little bit of a dick move,

but it's a hundred thousand dollars on the line.

Make a nice bird's nest.

This challenge is a big deal.

I'm the last woman here, I feel the pressure.

I don't wanna lose today.

I've got all my pea bush now.

It's time to make the set.

I need to start carving everything down.

I need a good spindle.

I need this to be as straight as possible.

I don't want anything on it that's gonna--

no knots or anything that's gonna hurt my hand.

So you want a small spindle, 'cause the smaller the diameter,

the more rotation you can get from our RPMs.

I need to just focus on me

for the rest of this competition.

I need to block out the world.

It's just me and these guys, and nobody else.

Know what I'm doing right now? I just got a variable,

and that's the materials and the cordage.

For my bow drill,

I need to find a fireboard, and I need to find a socket.

But I can make socket from hardwood.

I see that right there might be good enough for my fireboard.

Oh, yeah, it has got some good soft spots.

I like them about an inch thick.

Now I gotta make myself a socket.

Socket is your bearing block.

I want some good hard wood for that.

The socket is the handhold on top of the spindle

to keep it in place while using a bow drill

and is used to apply downward pressure

on the spindle to create friction on the fireboard.

It's gonna take a lot of heat,

and you want it to not wear down.

You want that spindle to glide into it.

This is hardwood, this will make a great socket.

There's my socket.

Good hardwood, nice divot in there.

Right now, I'm gonna grab a bunch of grass

from this hillside.

Also looking for a piece of paper bark,

something to transfer my fire.

Something like that.

Right now, I have a collection of pretty good materials

that I'm gonna bring back and be able to start working on.

With Matt finished collecting materials,

three competitors are now on to phase two,

building their fire kits.

Only Darrin is still in phase one.

OK, at this point, I'm trying to get

the best spindle I can.

This knife, I'm trying to get all these little knobs

off here.

Sand is gonna help smooth it up.

The spindle, this part here, is gonna need a board to go on.

I'm trying to get this to where I can actually go and start

turning this into its masterpiece into fire.

Obviously, today, everything's at stake.

These three other survivalists out here are some

of the strongest to ever take on Last One Standing,

but the savage is ready.

All right, so what I did is I pre-collected

a couple materials.

I got some jute and I've got some of this cordage

that I've had.

I shredded all this rope and I made this

into a little baby bird nest.

Matt is the first to complete phase two,

and he can now move on to phase three--

building his fire.

Now, with this--

it creates friction.

What I'm trying to do, slow down that friction.

I will get this done first.

I'm the freaking savage.

I'm not going out on no fire build challenge.

I'm staying here, I'm staying to play,

I'm staying to win.

I didn't come halfway around the world

to come out on no friction fire.

Come on!

Now I have to try to get the right tension

with this crappy cordage. It's not gonna be easy.

Right now, I'm creating an area to receive my ember.

On the rocket stove challenge, I worked too quickly

and didn't make a good enough rocket stove.

It doesn't have a wide enough opening

to really get these flames into the bottom of the pot.

This time, I'm gonna work methodically

and calculated and try to get this built perfectly

and then work furiously to get that friction fire.

This bone's gonna be my socket.

That looks pretty good.

Now, it's time to find out if these materials

are gonna work well together or not.

So the top of the spindle's gonna go inside my socket.

The bottom's gonna go inside my hearth board.

There's $100,000 on the line.

I can't afford to make any mistakes

in this challenge.

I love Matt.

I love Darrin and Cheeny, but I came here to win

and send everyone [bleep] home.

I need a thicker one for a bow drill.

I think I see some up here.

This is the most important fire of my life.

You have to have the game plan.

It has to be muscle memory.

You should know what you need

and know how to find it instantly.

With Cheeny in phase two, constructing her fire kit,

and Matt and Patrick already in phase three,

building their fires, Darrin is still in phase one,

gathering materials.

I want a nice, perfectly straight spindle.

The last thing you wanna do is be panicked

in a stressful survival situation,

but I'm just wasting time looking for the right materials.

There's a bush over here.

I literally got a spindle from this bush yesterday.

Yep.

Survivalists are now competing in the friction fire challenge.

Cheeny is close to completing phase two,

constructing her fire kit...

I should be getting there soon.

...while Matt and Patrick are already in phase three,

building their fires.

Darrin is the only one who hasn't finished phase one,

collecting materials.

I think that's a little too hard.

The competitor who finishes in last place

will be eliminated.

The last thing I need is to go make a bow.

Bow drill with questionable materials

is an energy expenditure.

If I have the right materials, I can get this done

pretty quickly.

The bow is just a bow.

I like a little kink in my bow with a good spot for a handle.

I like to do stuff properly.

And properly means taking your time

and taking pride in what you do.

I know what I like in a bow.

Wrap my cordage and then back earth hitch it

to hold it in place.

If you don't get that cordage secured on your bow,

you will lose it.

I'm gonna do a little trick here.

I'm gonna get this cordage wet

so it doesn't fall apart as fast.

I do not want this cordage to break.

And by dampening it, I can keep the friction in the cordage

from heating too much.

Something to collect this sweat.

Last thing I want is a drop of sweat hitting my cherry.

Cannot put out this ember once I get it.

All the prep

is to get to this moment right here.

I know how to make friction fire,

but this outback is rough.

To be out in the sun during the middle of the day is brutal.

I have to have the endurance

to make it to the end.

The spindle should sit,

right in the middle.

You need enough room on both sides

so it doesn't split.

Once I have everything ready to go, I need to form

a little indent in the fireboard with the spindle so I know

what the diameter of the spindle is.

I'm just kind of doing an indentation in the wood

with the spindle to see where I have to carve.

Pilot hole in the center.

So right now, I'm doing what's called marrying the set,

where the spindle starts to burn down into the fireboard.

Started a little bit of a burn.

Smells like success.

And that is when you cut your notch.

You want a good little circle already established

into the board so you can see where your spindle's

actually gonna drive down through.

As the spindle rotates, it puts out little bits

of fine wood that have heated up.

The notch directs that black dust to an area

where it eventually turns into an ember called the cherry

that can ignite a tender bundle to create fire.

All right, let's see what we got.

I'm ready to rock and roll, baby.

Let's do this thing.

I came here to compete against the best,

and I have to really go hard and be fierce

in these competitions.

At this point, my strategy is just give it everything today,

because today is the day that guarantees my spot

in the top three.

I didn't come this far to go home because of a mistake.

OK, I'm getting there.

Making good progress.

Did I want that ash to go

into where I need it.

One big advantage I have with the hand drill

is not only am I strong, but I work with my hands

every single day.

I have the toughest hands out here, bar none,

and my hands are gonna be able to hold up to that hand drill.

I would say right now, 99.9% confident.

I will get an ember and get that fire started.

Just keep working down.

I spent way too much energy last season

trying to get the hand drill and wasted a lot of time.

And I know how quickly great survivalists can get

a bow drill done.

Good, I've got a good notch in.

That's what I want.

It is very frustrating.

Last night, Matt and I were messing around with hand drill,

and we were getting embers in no time.

This here-- this isn't dark enough.

This is way too light.

So I need more downward pressure.

Need a deeper notch.

I gotta work it.

Takes a lot of energy to do this.

I am not even thinking about anyone else

in this competition, but myself.

Bow drill is energy intensive,

especially when you're half starved.

And we've already seen people drop from heat stroke

on this challenge.

I'm not gonna let that happen to me.

Managing my body temperature is important today.

With a bow drill, the hardest part

is the last push.

It's smoking, it's getting hot.

My hands are probably tougher than everyone else's out here,

but working that hand drill will eat a person's hands up.

I'm getting good friction on my fire board.

I know my competitors will be able to get

friction fire quickly.

Just gotta keep cranking that bow back and forth

to get my ember.

My cord is broke. Ah!

It just sunk through the bottom

before that baby was made.

The friction from Matt's spindle created heated dust,

but it also burned through his fireboard,

causing the dust to scatter and lose its heat.

So right now, it's the fireboard.

It's messing me up.

I need to make another one.

These materials are not what I've been used to.

So at this point,

I gotta harness inner savage.

All four survivalists are in phase three

of the primitive fire challenge.

The top three to make fire will advance,

and the fourth place finisher will be eliminated.

My cordage broke.

Super frustrating.

This is when having paracord would come in really handy.

- Hey, Cheeny. - What?

You wanna trade for some paracordage?

I love you, but you don't have anything in the world

that I want right now, Patrick. I'm sorry.

There isn't a thing on Earth that anybody could trade me

right now for this paracord, even though I'm not using it.

It's my asset. I earned it.

No trades.

Guess I should have expected it.

This is "Last one standing," after all.

This wet cordage really allows me to crank

so much smoother.

Man, I'm getting smoke, it's burning out right now.

Spindle's working great, bow's a little awkward.

That bow is hard to pull right now.

Come on, buddy.

Good dust.

All my friction's packing heat into that notch.

And all I need is that one little coal to start.

Come on, come on.

It's smoking.

So close, yet so far away.

Ugh!

It is getting hotter and hotter

as this challenge goes on.

I'm trying my best, but the heat is

taking it out on me, it's taking out on all of us.

Handle's exhausting, I'm not going fast enough,

I don't have enough downward pressure.

I'm worried about my arms burning out.

I'm worried about my hands getting chewed up.

With hand drilling you need to be careful

because you can get blisters.

And once I start getting blisters

and shredding up my hands,

that's it for me.

Taking a break.

This is the hottest day so far out here.

Keep my core temperature down a little bit,

'cause I'm getting really warm.

And once you get smoke going, you got to speed up

to get that ember.

And if you don't have that "Umph,"

don't burn yourself out halfway there.

I'm doing good, making sure I'm fresh before every go here.

Getting my body temperature down,

I think's gonna be really key.

I am not worried until there's two people with fire today.

Almost had it.

Getting there, you can see how burned it is.

This is exactly what I want right now.

Sounds like everyone's pretty much at the same point,

I think it's anyone's game right now.

One more go with the hand drill

before I completely destroy my hands.

Ugh!

It was worth another shot.

This hand drill's not working.

I'm in disbelief.

From what I've just been training with,

those materials would have made 10 fires by now.

At this point, my hands are smashed.

I now have just wasted a good solid amount of time

doing something I knew would work,

but for some reason it's not working.

Oh, [bleep].

I got one more trick up my nose.

A little grease for that socket.

I have some natural lubricant that I can put

on the end of that spindle.

A little nose grease.

So that I can reduce the friction

where I don't need it to increase the friction

where I need it.

The nose grease thing,

it's that bag of tricks that I have.

And you only get that

from years and years of experience.

Come on.

It's late in the challenge.

This is physically exhausting, but I can't waste

any more time.

I'm a tough cookie. Screw it.

I need to get my ass moving on the bow drill.

My life depends on it right now.

I have to start over again.

Bust out the fastest bow drill kit

I've ever made in my life.

I need a better spindle.

I'm the only one with paracord.

Time to turn this hand drill set into a bow drill set

to get my fireboard.

The one that I was working on for my hand drill

on a new spindle.

Something's a hair different with this,

I'm looking for a thick shell, a piece of good chunk of bone.

The hand drill wasn't working.

Yesterday I could have made them all day,

like I was at a fair.

So I'm doing something I've never done before.

Grabbing my beloved bowstring.

That's my bowstring.

I hate to do this to this bowstring.

Feels wrong.

It feels real wrong.

But right now, this is the battle that counts,

and this one, there's no turning back.

This bowstring has brought more meat than every single

other survivalist combined.

It has taken down two pigs, one of which was like

250 pounds.

I have never once defaced a bowstring.

But I'll tell you what, I could buy a hell of a lot

more bowstrings with $100,000.

No mistakes at this point.

Right now, with the paracord, I have a huge advantage here

Natural cordage is a pain in the ass.

and I only have one.

I have to be able to do what I can for this final push.

They're both working on a boat drill,

on the very first fire challenge.

Even though I was closer with friction fire

than I was last time, I'm just thinking about--

how I'm gonna get better.

There was only four of us going into this,

and one person was gonna leave.

Patrick-- he fought to the bitter end.

Having to compete against him was tough.

And today, luckily, he's going home.

There was parts of Patrick that I literally felt

like skinning like a weasel. - We got a fish in line!

That's pitifulness right there.

That's desperation. That's what weasels do.

They come in and steal [bleep].

I hated when I saw him steal a fish hook

and I saw him feel like he wanted to try

to get an upper hand.

Then I saw the other parts of Patrick.

You know what? Being around you definitely

changed me a little bit.

Honor, buddy.

He turned from that person that would rather sabotage

to a genuine survivalist that's looking to get

to people at their best.

And that's the part I'm gonna miss.

Cheeny, we've had an amazing friendship

that got blossomed through this. - It sucks.

We're friends, we've bonded out here.

a big walk.

I may have been eliminated, but I've been eliminated

by some of the best of Naked and Afraid.

And I hold my head up high about that.

With Patrick's elimination, the final three survivalists

remain to compete for the title of Last One Standing.

I think we need to grab some coals

for our fires tonight.

Matt, Darrin, and Cheeny will now gather their supplies.

And migrate half a mile to the final zone,

where they will camp solo for the remainder

of the competition.

As they migrate to zone four,

the survivalists will be heading toward a lower

elevation of jagged, sun scorched terrain,

known to Australians as giver plains,

that brings with it some of the highest temperatures

on the continent.

All three camps are located near an outback oasis

that provides cool, clear water,

but which also attracts ambush predators,

such as the deadly Australian freshwater crocodile,

that uses a sit and wait strategy

to attack passing prey.

Well, guys, I guess it's solo from here, so, uh,

see you when I see you.

We're on the final countdown, and we don't know

what's coming up.

All I know is I did not come all the way to Australia

to lose.

Darrin and Cheeny are both my friends,

but also my competitors.

They're not gonna know what I have until they watch me

be the last one standing.

I still have two more guys to beat out here.

Two big, strong fellas, but I'm not sweating it.

I don't want to go home yet.

It's actually got some sand.

You want a comfortable spot

for some sun, some shade.

is my only-- it's my only fire now.

I have no fire starter.

So first thing, I have to do is nurse this fire

back to proper health here.

Puff a little wind on it.

This bore hide is something I've carried around for a bit,

and I still have quite a bit of jerky from that boar.

So the plan for survival at this point

is keeping myself powered up, because in the next day or two,

it challenges once again.

The fact that my two opponents right now are probably

chewing on jerky from the last pig I got

ready to compete against me, I still don't regret that

for a second.

Humble abode.

Ah, new campsite.

Looks like we got a pond!

Oh, yeah.

Three people left in this challenge.

It always feels good to edge Matt out a little bit,

but this could be anyone's game.

I got beachfront.

I got good fishing right here.

I think this is my new home.

Here, at the end of this game, I've got some key items.

I got a bow asset.

I've got plenty of food stashed.

And I have a shovel.

I just wanna be able to finish "Last One Standing"

with efficiency-- efficiency is what wins.

Challenges are so much adrenaline.

And then right back into survival.

I'm worn down, I'm exhausted.

I'm constantly moving to different areas,

but it's serious now.

I'm the last female here and I'm in the top three.

So there is a lot of pressure on me to win this thing.

It's very deep water.

There's gonna be lots of fish.

Those are big, sweaty grunters.

I've got some jerky.

I've got some figs, but I'm right by the water,

and I have a fishing asset, so I might as well try.

I still have to compete against these guys.

That is a tall order.

Camping alone, it's a little windy by this beautiful lake.

Who knows, there might be another challenge

before the final challenge.

I have no clue what's gonna happen.

So, uh, tomorrow, I need to calorie up

and get ready.

Like, I gotta get strong for this final.

Because today, it whooped me.

It's the morning.

My first night sleeping by myself,

this entire challenge.

So close to the end, I can almost taste.

Just eating some of my jerky

from that pig.

The jerky's great, but I'll definitely

finish it up by tomorrow.

Same with the figs.

I don't feel like I'm getting scrawny and weak,

which is a good feeling, but I know I gotta eat.

There's a whole school of them.

These challenges take a lot of energy out of us,

but that's OK because, on these survival days,

I have a chance to catch up.

It's just crazy.

They're just sitting there.

I'm literally tossing it right at them.

And they're swimming away.

So weird.

Nothing. I've tried grasshoppers.

I've tried bits of figs, bits of jerky.

Just nothing's biting.

Gotta be the heat pushing the fish down.

Being alone in this camp,

really allowed me to rest.

And I'm feeling great going forward.

the adrenaline starts pumping, and we have a few days left.

So things are gonna heat up.

And I wanna win this thing, but I also know that I'm going

against some really big competition.

So I gotta stay confident, and I gotta stay humble.

There's one thing I've been doing in this whole competition.

It's digging deep, so I feel good about today.

We just finished one of the hardest competitions

of all time, and we are now back at a competition.

Whatever happens today, I'm gonna give it my all.

I'm gonna dig deep. Here we go.

Good morning for a battle.

It is.

All right.

Let's see what we gotta do today, huh?

Yep.

Today, each survivalist must build

a baited primitive bird trap.

Ideal for capturing small mammals

and ground dwelling birds,

the ability to bushcraft an eight rung basket trap

is an essential survival skill.

There's a bird in there.

Oh, my God.

For the first phase of this challenge,

survivalists must collect four crickets as bait

for their bird trap.

Your trap must be able to capture a common bird

in this environment, the pea hen.

After collecting crickets, each competitor moves on

to phase two-- gathering natural materials

and using them to build a basket

large enough and sturdy enough

to hold an eight pound pea hen.

Craft a trap and dig a hole large enough

to capture a pea hen.

Set and trigger your trap.

In phase three, survivalists must trench a hole

under their basket trap using any previously earned asset

or natural digging tool.

In the fourth and final phase, they must set,

trigger, and reset the trap.

The first survivalist to complete their trap

earns the choice of a pea hen...

- Oh, man. - OK.

- Nice. - ...or a folding saw.

- Ooh, also good. - Also really good.

Ooh.

To have better tools than your competitors

means you can build faster and you can build better.

Using a sharp saw versus swinging a heavy kukri

is like a hot knife through butter.

Ooh!

- Ooh! - Some food, that'd be nice.

That's a pretty big bird.

These things are about the size of a turkey.

We're coming to the final days of "Last One Standing."

The more food, the better.

These challenges take a lot of energy.

It's a big win.

Second earns the remaining cash.

In these non elimination challenges,

cashed assets are very important.

Every asset has a purpose and a future challenge,

whether it's calories for strength,

or tools to build better.

And the final elimination's coming up, and any advantage

I can get for that challenge is gonna be a key advantage.

2 - Oh, let's go! - Yeah!

Whoo!

The survivalists begin phase one

of the bird trap challenge.

They must secure four crickets as bait.

Look for jumping stuff.

All right, gotta get some crickets.

Everything bird wise loves little crickets.

So to get four of these crickets

is just enough that it's gonna look appetizing enough

for a pea hen to actually make the move into the trap.

Where are those crickets at?

There's tiny, tiny ones in here,

but they're hard to find.

There's one.

Little tiny thing.

Crickets like to hide in and under things.

So I just start looking in the log.

There's one, two, three, four.

And that's four.

See ya, I'm off.

Your cricket's catching woman there.

Now to collect sticks.

I'm gonna claim this spot right here.

I need straight sticks.

Cheeny moves on to phase two of the challenge,

gathering materials and building a basket

capable of capturing an Australian pea hen.

Because of the bird's size, the trap must have a base

of two feet by two feet

and a height of 18 inches,

with eight rungs tightly secured

with the provided cordage.

Need a lot of sticks for this trap.

How'd she already get four?

I mean, Cheeny's already found her crickets.

We just started, and I'm already behind.

But you know what?

The key to my success has always been my mental focus

and never panicking.

I wanna cook as much as I can.

So I actually just made this bird trap

before I came out here.

I caught one of my chickens in it.

Come on.

OK.

Four crickets, OK.

Need a lot of straight sticks.

Ha! This is mine! Cool!

Now I got four.

OK here we go.

I'm gonna put these crickets,

put them on a leaf here so I don't lose them.

All three survivalists have completed phase one

of the challenge.

With crickets as bait, they continue on

to the next phase, gathering materials

and building the trap.

This is good.

I think I'll start building.

This kind of trap

requires a lot of sticks,

and a lot of them need to be straight.

Yeah, I'm gonna need about 32

to be on the safe side, and one's at the bottom.

They need to be nice and straight.

In a competition like this with three people,

right now the margin of error is tiny.

I am not the fastest, so doing something under haste

is definitely my kryptonite.

At this point, I need to just keep getting straight sticks

and get it done as fast as possible.

OK, I'm just getting as many sticks as I can.

I need to catch up to Matt and Cheeny,

so I'm gathering little dried sticks close to me

because I don't have to cut them.

I can break them to length, and that saves

a lot of time versus cutting.

Oh, I've been making traps my whole life.

I'm pretty confident. I did this challenge last year.

Yeah, I need long sticks, please.

And straight.

Ky told me exactly how she built it.

Exactly what to do, the little tricks.

Guys, I got it.

Go! Go!

Look at this thing!

Get inside my belly.

This year, I gotta do all of it.

It's gonna be a little interesting.

I think I've got

enough of these straight sticks for this build.

Here we go.

I think I got more than enough.

With materials gathered, all three survivalists

are now constructing their traps basket.

I'm gonna need four at the bottom,

then I'm gonna need four slightly smaller, and on and on.

Right now, I'm just gonna build.

Just gonna get to crafting here.

Matt and Cheeny are packing stuff,

and I'm just breaking little dried sticks

from right around the build area,

'cause I know I can break them to size

and save a lot of time and energy.

Any advantage you can get is the second closer

you are to being first.

I got my base sticks

on these ones, 'cause then I can do notches.

It's gonna hold the paracord in place

so it doesn't slip out.

This is good.

My next step is to construct my bird trap.

First thing I need to do is I need to cut the cord,

and I need to size it to my trap.

This is the tricky part.

Can't be too short, and it can't be too long.

The bird trap is held together by two pieces of cordage

tied to the basket's base.

Twisting the two runner sticks into an X-shape creates tension

as the trap rungs are stacked beneath the tightening cordage,

creating a sturdy pyramid structure.

As I make this thing, it's gonna shrink up

a little bit, so...

You want this trap to be square.

It helps distribute the weight, it helps it balance itself.

So you have to tie it just right.

Do an X.

Nope, I've gotta make that wider.

My first time tying it, I tie it too long.

This doesn't look right, so this needs to be a little

longer on the bottom.

My second time tying it, it's too short.

I need as much gas in the tank as possible.

I want that pea hen.

These four.

Doing a little constrictor knot and cinch in each one

of these four corners.

You need to be strong, if you don't make a trap strong,

it's not even worth making.

So I am working fast, but I am working controlled.

Right now, I'm just setting the base.

This is the important part. To have a good base here

is everything, 'cause that's what holds it all together.

That square base is tied together with cordage

that comes up and over and ties to the next corner.

And as you stack your sticks in Lincoln log style,

as it builds up, it creates a nice dome.

By the time you get to the top, your string's nice and tight,

and it holds everything together.

Gotta get this up until this is tight

and stays together.

There we go. That's looking better.

I'm not out here with just anybody.

I'm out here with the best.

We're at the end now. We're in the top three.

Darrin is going quick here.

Now, I think I'm close to the size I need

for a pea hen.

just getting all your stuff tensioned just right

can be the hardest part.

The pea hen cannot come out.

To no surprise, the speed on which this happens

starts going real quick.

This is one of those competitions

that's won by seconds.

Just closing up the top.

I'm just gonna use as many sticks as I can.

It's just one step away between becoming first

and not getting it at all.

It's a very thick top, but--

I need this thing to stay put.

My trap is complete.

Now I need to dig a hole.

The first to complete her basket, Cheeny moves on

to phase three, digging her trap's hole.

All of a sudden, I see Cheeny has now

already finished the trap.

I am falling behind.

My length of cord is a little bit off right now.

Cheeny is such a strong survivalist.

I'm trying to catch up.

I need to try to shorten this up a hair.

Come on. Come on.

God, come on.

I'm tightening that up.

to construct the basket.

Oh, I think I'm close to the size I need

Cheeny is in the lead and has moved on to phase three,

digging a cubic foot hole large enough

to capture a pea hen.

Hole needs to be at least this deep.

We got quite a ways to go.

The first to set the basket over a trenched hole

and trigger their trap earns a competitive advantage,

the choice of a pea hen or a folding saw.

I think this will hold a pea hen.

Just getting all your stuff tensioned just right

can be the hardest part.

Well, this ground's hard.

I have a kukri and a pot lid. That's about it.

This dirt is very clay-like, it's been baking in the sun.

It is hard.

That ain't over until it's over.

I'm liking that, I'm gonna dig my hole.

Shovel's also a pick.

Darrin just finished.

That's when a shovel would be nice.

When I chose this shovel,

I figured it would come in handy in a future challenge.

Darrin is one lucky man.

He was smart to choose that shovel.

Shovel would be clutch right now.

The final step to this is just continuing to make this tight.

OK, so right now,

that's ready to go.

Darrin has a shovel. He can dig in places like this.

I cannot dig here.

What I need to do,

taking these dead sticks with me...

Gotta make a move.

I could hear his shovel hitting the ground,

and I could tell it's hard.

Just gonna have to get a step ahead.

I gotta try to get to a softer ground

to make up the speed for Darrin.

I know at this point, the only thing I can do

is to take this antler that I have and head over

to where I saw the pigs that rooted up the ground.

I have the ability to read the land.

If pigs have been digging here,

then that means it's diggable.

I'm working with the animals right now.

So this hat I have, made from wild boar,

is an element protection.

And while the others have to sit there

and stay in the shade, I have no problem getting out

into that hot sun.

It's a smart choice, cause that shrinks Darrin's

absolute advantage.

A lot better spot to dig.

It's gonna be rough digging for everyone else today.

This is rough digging with a shovel.

Pea hens are pretty big.

I need a hole this pea hen can fit into when it goes down

to get that bait.

Matt, The Wise, digging in the mud.

Matt gets into soft mud by this waterhole we're at.

He got some easy digging,

but I got a shovel and he doesn't.

So the game's still in my ball feed.

My hole's big enough.

Now I just gotta make my trigger.

This hole-- is not hard to dig at all.

This is my stick for the hole width.

Boom, boom.

The perfect spot for a peep out trap.

Check my depth.

It looks like I got plenty of room.

Trap mechanism, time.

While Cheeny fights to advance past phase three,

Darrin and Matt move on to the final phase,

triggering and resetting the trap.

You never know what could happen.

Anybody out here can make a mistake,

and you can pull ahead.

The trigger is, by far, the hardest part

of this entire challenge.

I've never made this trigger before,

but the concept behind it looks fairly simple.

This trap uses a four stick trigger mechanism

consisting of a Y-shaped support stick,

notched and held up by a grounded fulcrum stick

and two trigger sticks.

When constructed correctly, a bird that enters

to eat the bait, sets off one of the trigger sticks

and is caught in the trap.

I love building triggers.

I grab some long branches with lots of little fork sticks.

Trigger's honestly the most important part of a trap.

If your trigger doesn't work, your trap just won't go off.

Trigger mechanism has to be delicate enough that a bird

can set it off easily, but hard enough

that it doesn't go off accidentally.

Make this trigger mechanism here.

It's a fulcrum, and that fulcrum is balancing

right now in the center pivot point.

This is where you gotta take a breather.

This trigger mechanism requires a fulcrum point,

and then it requires two sticks touching that fulcrum,

and sometimes takes a little bit of work.

OK,

Not working.

Fulcrum point is just a little far off.

This is the point where

frustrations get the best of everyone.

My hole is done.

It's time to do the trigger mechanism.

Trigger stick.

This is the hard part.

Cheeny's not too far behind me.

All three survivalists are now in the final phase

of the competition.

Just 'cause I'm last doesn't mean I'm gonna quit.

The first to set, trigger, and reset their trap

wins the challenge and their choice

of a survival asset.

Keep it simple, stupid.

This is the hard part.

This is the point where it's easy to fall behind.

Right now, the margin of error is tiny.

It's not just seconds, it's milliseconds

between becoming first and not getting it at all.

- Come on, come on. - Nope, stay, stay.

Come on.

2 Surrender your fire starter and create primitive fire.

Let's go.

For this competition, the PSR,

or primitive survival rating, weighs an individual's

survival skills and items collected

to determine the likelihood of becoming

the last one standing.

I do not want this cordage to break,

and by dampening it, I can keep

the friction in the cordage from heating too much.

Relying on his survival experience, Darrin wet his jute

and greased the socket of his bow drill...

I have some natural lubricant

so that I can reduce the friction.

...in order to achieve friction fire first.

I've got it.

Woo! Trucking the fire today, boys!

My shovel's also a pick.

And prioritizing advanced tools

offered a critical advantage in building his bird trap.

I think this shovel is the key today.

This is all hard pack clay.

His PSR jumps from 9.6 to 9.8.

After failing with his initial fire making method...

This hand drill's not working.

Try something new.

...Matt pivoted by disassembling his bow...

...and took second place in the challenge.

I just made the friction fire of a lifetime.

His PSR notches up from 9.7 to 9.8.

Initially disregarding her paracord

for a quicker method,

Cheeny began the challenge with a hand drill.

But after falling behind...

I'm the only one with paracord.

Time to turn this hand drill set into a bow drill set.

...she created a bow drill under pressure...

...and achieved friction fire third.

Doesn't matter if you're male or female.

trigger, and reset their bird traps.

This is down to the wire at this point.

You know, so obviously Darrin just came in first,

but Cheeny and I still have to get that second place win.

So any misstep now, it would cost you an asset.

Oh, come on.

It's not working because...

that fulcrum point is just a little far off.

What I need is snap this twig without having to take

my other hand off the trap.

Trap mechanism is very finesse.

Right now, it wants to pivot a little bit.

but that trap, it was hard getting the trigger to stay.

Just as I get my trigger balanced and set,

I see Matt running towards the finish line.

Matt just narrowly beat me at this competition.

I'm gonna go grab my item.

Darrin's ability to build, trigger, and reset his trap

the fastest secures him the first choice of advantages.

Matt will earn the leftover asset.

Well...

That's a lot of meat.

It seems like every item we win in one of these challenges

could be an advantage in the next challenge.

If I hadn't had that shovel, I would have been behind Matt.

You know what?

I'm gonna plan for the future and take the saw today.

I wanted the saw.

And I see Darrin reaching for the asset,

and I realize if I didn't feed him

all of the pig that I got,

I guarantee he would have picked the peafowl.

Then I am left with Miss Peafowl here.

It, uh-- I've been eating a lot of pork,

so I think it's time to switch up to a little white meat.

I didn't get anything, but even when I've failed,

I bounce back and I stay persistent,

and that is why I'm in the top three,

and that is what is hopefully gonna make me

the last one standing.

and just one final gauntlet remaining

to become the last one standing,

survivalists return to their individual camps.

with two other people who are every bit as strong as I am.

My competitors still have a bunch of jerky from the pig

I got because I've been feeding them this entire time.

But this-- this asset is just for me.

Which means I'm getting a lot of fat now,

which is gonna help for thinking fast on your feet.

That jerky doesn't have any fat in it.

Darrin has come in first on the last two challenges.

I've come in second.

Beautiful bird going in.

That's a pot full.

But now I'm hoping that that saw is not something

that gives too much of an advantage.

However, it may come down to who has

the most energy at the end.

And the savage meadery is only open for one tonight.

That final challenge is the only one

that you have to come in first.

And this battle is not gonna end

until I'm the last one standing.
