Taranaki was in love with a

beautiful mountain called Pihanga.

But Tongariro Mountain was also in love

with Pihanga, so there was lots of fighting.

And Tongariro got so mad that they took

their peak off and erupted into a volcano.

Taranaki got tired of all the fighting,

and decided the best thing to do was leave,

even though Taranaki really

loved Pihanga. And Taranaki left,

heartbroken, heading toward the sea,

leaving a big scar on the land behind.

Tears filling it up.

Luckily Taranaki had a guardian rock called Te Toka-a-Rauhoto,

who told Taranaki to take a break.

And then Te Toka snuck over to see Poukai...

and Poukai made a beautiful, long ridge so that
