33 -year -old Kathy Spires is a single
mom doing the best she can to raise her

only child, Shauna. She was a loving,
caring person.

just so she could make ends meet and

-year -old Steve Markham.

After the wedding, Steve, Kathy, and
Shauna settle down in Golden, Colorado.

Steve finds work as a massage therapist,
and Kathy does what she'd always wanted

to do.

She was a very talented cosmetologist,
and she opened up a darling salon.

She really was an asset to the community
and really had a great reputation.

The Markham family is living the
American dream.

Kathy finally has everything she's ever
wanted.

But that's about to change.

Steve, what the hell?

Where I get all of my gold bars, the
toilet.

Remember when we first got together?

And I said that I did some work for the
government.

Well, I didn't exactly give you the
whole story.

I worked for the CIA.

Steve started to tell Kathy about the
past life of his.

He admitted to working in espionage.

Then I wanted nothing to do with them,
and I quit.

The gold is inheritance from my dad.

The CIA would have traced it if I had
put it into bank accounts. So I took the

gold and I ran.

That's when he ended up in Denver,
Colorado.

That's when he met my mom. That's why he
was working as a busboy. It's because

he was on the run from the CIA.

What does this even mean?

They've been looking for me.

And they've found me.

In San Joaquin County, detectives
identify the man found floating in the

California aqueduct.

Lester Marks was a white male from
downtown San Francisco in the Tenderloin

of San Francisco. When they ask Lester's
friends and family who might have

wanted him dead, one name comes up over
and over.

Ronnie Marks, Lester's youngest son.

Hey, Dad. Hold on, son.

Five bucks says you missed that.

Son of a... Could do double or nothing.

I'll take that. He was a very good
golfer.

Rumors were he had played and won a pro
-am over at the Olympic Club in San

Francisco.

Ten.

Ronnie showed a lot of potential, but
also had some brushes with the law.

Twenty. Ronnie was going down the wrong
path.

He couldn't keep his hands off other
people's clubs or things that were

out, and probably was using narcotics.
And that would be 40.

Hey, you know that tournament at Pebble
Beach where I was, what, one shot

off the lead, and if I hadn't bogeyed on
that 12?

That is a tough green, the 12.

Yeah, right?

Ronnie had his fight set on the pro
circuit, and that takes money. So?

How much is it going to cost me this
year?

Lester was paying for his golf
instruction, his tournament entry fees,

these things.

And he was going through it.

Ronnie, look.

Huh? I can't have this anymore.

You know what I mean, son?

No more nonsense.

No more stealing.

And no more drugs.

Despite his father's financial and
emotional support, Ronnie loses one

tournament after another.

He's caught stealing again, adding to
his struggles.

Investigators believe that Ronnie,
desperate for cash in order to support

addiction, may have had a motive to kill
Lester.

Ronnie, we can help you.

didn't do.

who you were with on August 6th. We'll

In this case, they pushed and they
pushed, and Ronnie stuck to his story.

Despite their suspicions, investigators
have no evidence that Ronnie Marks was

involved in his father's death.

And the case goes cold.

Meanwhile, back in Colorado, Kathy
Spires has tried to move on from her

Steve's confession that he's a former
CIA agent.

The word that was used was mercenary,
and he had gone.

All over the world, doing what the
government wanted him to do.

And it appears Stephen's past is
catching up with him.

Is there something you want to tell me?

Where's the Porsche?

It's gone.

They took it.

What do you mean they took it? Who took
it? The CIA.

This is what they do.

He said that the CIA must have come and
repossessed it, taken it back, because

he was refusing to work for them again.

Kathy, they've rose my accounts.

This doesn't make any sense. How can
they do this? Take your money, our car?

I mean, why does the CIA want our car,
for God's sake? They don't want the car.

They want control over their agents.

I don't want to talk about this.

We have to talk about this. I don't
believe what I'm hearing.

Kathy, there's something...

But you should know. Oh, my God.

It's not Steve Markham.

It's Eric Stone.

At this point, Kathy's head is spinning.

The ground is falling out underneath
her.

This is insane.

I had to change my name when I left the
agency.

Everything keeps changing about him.

I want to tell you everything. I do. I
just... It's hard.

Maybe if we go back to my hometown and
you can get to know Eric

and see where I grew up.

Just start from the beginning.

Like she had felt burned from men in the
past.

She was going to ask the tough

The couple heads to Eric's hometown of
Exeter, California.

Eric took my mom to where his parents
used to live.

And then they get there and there's
nothing there but a lot.

He said that his family died in a fire.

And the house burnt down.

I'm glad we're here.

It might make it easier to understand
what I've... been through. They go to

cemetery so he can find his parents.

No, wait.

Not here.

And he's looking all over the place,
trying to find their tombstones, trying

figure out where they were buried.

It was here.

Eric, there's nothing there.

The headstones are gone.

My God.

He was terribly upset.

They have no shame.

Look what they did. My mom and dad.

Who did what? What are you talking
about?

And he was on his knees crying to her.
They're wiping me out.

They were buried right here.

The agency.

They're sending a message.

It's what they do.

They take everything.

They erase you.

Eric, that's crazy.

My God.

It's going to be okay.

Nothing was adding up.

All it did was make her more curious.

So when she left here, she still had
many, many questions.

Kathy and Eric returned to Colorado.

Eric tells her he's done talking about
his past.

He kind of clammed up. He refused to
answer questions.

And it was as though he kind of reverted
back to the secret person that he'd

been initially.

As the years pass, Kathy accepts she may
never know the real truth.

Still, she tries to glean information
where she can and decides to make Eric a

memory book.

Hi, my name is Kathy Spires. I was told
by Exeter High School that you might be

able to help me with something.

Okay, shoot.

This is kind of a strange question, but
I'm looking for whoever keeps track of

the yearbook.

I got a call from Kathy wanting to speak
to the yearbook advisor, which was my

position. I'd love to get a yearbook on
behalf of a student. He graduated in

1963. His name was Eric Stone.

63? Well, that's my year. Now, that's a
coincidence.

Except there was only one Eric that
year, Eric Wright.

No, his name is Stone.

Tall guy, short brown hair?

Yes. That's Eric, right?

Yeah, we only had 93 kids in the class,
and I knew them all, especially Eric.

Only one Eric.

It was an amazing coincidence because I
also had gone to school with Eric since

fifth grade, and I knew him quite well,
and I'd gone to his house several times.

I believe his sister still lives in the
area somewhere. Parents, too.

No, he told me that he was an only child
and that his parents died in a fire.

I told Kathy that I had driven by his
parents' house just recently, and I knew

that it had not burned up.

But I'm still not sure that we're
talking about the same person.

No, I'm pretty sure we are.

She couldn't believe it, and I could
tell. She kind of knew something was up

right then.

Through 12 years of marriage, Eric
Wright, also known as Eric Stone, and

Markham, has told his wife Kathy one lie
after another.

And now she's had enough.

After she talked to Chuck Knox, that's
when she really took the initiative to

stand up and figure this out.

You have a sister.

What are you doing standing in the dark?

And there was never a fire.

Your parents' house is still standing.

And so are your parents.

They want us to tear each other apart.
Do not tell me that this was the CIA,

Eric. Oh, and I also found out that it's
Eric Wright, not Eric Stone.

This right here, this is exactly what
they want.

Somebody who knows you. Student body
president, most dependable, any of this

ringing a bell?

He denies and denies, but she's not
going for it this time. She wants to

the truth, and she's not letting go.

Did you think that I wouldn't figure all
this out? You think I'm stupid?

Kathy. Tell me what you're hiding.

That night, Kathy packs up and moves
out.

Kathy believed that he could kill her,
her daughter, and so she divorced him.

Shauna goes to live with family in
California, while Kathy moves to the

town of Roaring Fork River in the
Colorado Rockies.

Who's there?

One night, Kathy was awakened by the
sound of gunshots piercing her cabin.

Oh, my God.

Even though she never saw who the
shooter was, she was pretty convinced

was Eric.

Please, somebody's shooting outside my
house.

Send someone.

He was the boogeyman to her.

Kathy's worst nightmare. You know,
someone that comes out of the dark and

you.

Police investigate, but are unable to
find the shooter.

If it was Eric's attempt to scare her,
it backfired.

This was the point where my mom rose up
and said, I'm not going to take this

anymore. Kathy turns the tables on her
ex and vows to find out who Eric really

is. She would make phone calls. She
would look up records. She went to

libraries.

Relentless was the perfect word for her.

And everybody thought she was crazy.

She lost a lot of friends.

Hi, can you connect me to the county
records department, please?

As she was investigating, she kept
getting more empowered because facts

coming out.

Yes, I was wondering if you could send
me the employment records for someone

named Eric Wright.

He would have been 28 years old at the
time. It was making her whole in a way.

And the deeper Kathy digs, the more
deception she finds.

Okay, I'm going to need you to send me a
copy of that, but I want to make sure

that I heard you right. Can you repeat
that?

She found out that everything was a lie.

No dead parents, no inheritance, no CIA.

You said Lieutenant Eric Wright. Is that
correct?

Kathy discovers that her ex -husband did
once have a career in law enforcement,

just not with the CIA.

He had actually worked in California at
one point as a sheriff's deputy for

Alameda County.

Eric actually rose very quickly through
the ranks at the sheriff's department.

He became a lieutenant at 28.

But the biggest lie of all turns out to
be something that Eric didn't tell

Kathy. Eric Wright.

Lieutenant and rising star at the
Alameda County Sheriff's Office... Hi,

...is married.

And that's not all.

Oh, hi, Mr. Baker.

How are you, sir?

Hello, Eric. He told her that he'd never
loved anyone like her before and that

this was all new to him. Dad came over
to wish Molly a happy birthday.

Oh. Speaking of, where's my little girl?
I got her that dollhouse she wanted.

It's going to take me all night to put
it together.

She's going to love it, honey.

She is, isn't she?

He said he had no family. None.

It was very shocking for her to find
these things out.

When you think you know somebody and you
don't, it was tough for my mom.

Molly, daddy's got a surprise for you.

After years of sleuthing, Kathy Spires
has uncovered her ex -husband's secret

past.

The man she once knew as Steve Markham
is actually Eric Wright, a married

sheriff's lieutenant with a daughter.

My parents are gone. I have no kids. I'm
not married.

I really felt bad for Kathy that she had
to experience that because that broke

her heart.

By the age of 28, Wright had it all, a
loving family and a promising career

in law enforcement.

Yeah, did you ever get that account?

Because he was so young as a lieutenant,
he would have been in a good position

at some point to run for the sheriff of
the county. But he actually quit the

sheriff's office, which surprised many
people because he was successful there.

He says he just got burned out. Yeah,
I've been calling your office for like

three days.

Once he got out of the sheriff's
department, he had to decide how to make

living because he had a...

daughter and a wife to support.

So he went into the precious metals
business, and he called it Consolidated

Mines. Buying silver, buying gold,
melting them down, and had the thought

it was going to be worth a lot more
money than what he would pay for it.

If the library sends over any more
boxes, you're going to need a bigger

Kathy tracks Eric Wright's businesses
through legal and public record

But it's a newspaper article from
September 1980 that causes real alarm.

Kathy, take a look at this.

Unbelievable.

No, I won't hold.

It's already been 12 hours. He was a
lieutenant in your department. How long

we have to wait?

Melanie.

Do you know who my father is?

Melanie, don't. That's enough. Give me
the phone.

This is Judge Baker. Who am I speaking
with?

It was just an unusual set of
circumstances for Eric to be gone.

We're concerned because he works with
precious metals. Gold, silver.

I mean, that's a lot of money.

It could be a robbery.

Having a wife, a daughter, good
relationship with his in -laws, still

his parents.

Okay, thank you. Everything seemed to be
going well.

Okay, they're going to look into it for
us.

Melanie, you've got to stay calm, all
right? It's probably nothing, a

miscommunication. You don't know that.

What am I going to tell Molly?

A few days later,

Investigators get a call from the
transit authority police who have

Eric's car.

It had one bullet hole in it.

It had what appeared to be blood on it.

Huh.

Looks like someone might be after Eric.

It could have been a robbery.

I mean, if anyone knew he had that
duffel bag of gold, that's easy money

there. And the bullet hole in the door
of the car was made with a .38 caliber

gun. Maybe he was shot here, then
whoever it was took him and...

Finish the job somewhere else.

All right, make it happen.

Almost immediately, detectives realize
something isn't quite right.

Eric's wife told me that he had a .38
caliber Walther brand gun.

Interestingly enough, the bullet in the
door of the car appeared to be from a

gun that Eric Wright might have possibly
owned.

And when they test the blood found on
the car, their suspicions only grow.

Agent Lucas!

What's up?

I got the test results back on the
blood, and it's not Eric Wright.

It's actually not even human.

The blood was analyzed, and it turned
out to be insect blood, curiously

I'll be damned.

That's a first.

Let me see. It appeared to...

us in reviewing their reports and the
forensic reports that it most likely was

staged crime scene event.

I went to Consolidated Minds and we
searched the facility.

I went and did a thorough search of his
desk and he had a book called Paper Trip

One. What have we here?

And it was detailed information on how
to obtain a new identity.

How to get a birth certificate.

How to start your life over.

It was a detailed account on how to
reinvent yourself as another person,

is exactly what Eric Wright ultimately
did.

Mr. Wright doesn't want to be found by
us or anyone else.

You never said anything about wanting to
leave? No indication?

No. Never.

I, uh... Sorry I have to ask this, but,
um... Was your husband having an affair?

No.

Nothing like that. I never doubted his
commitment to me and to Molly.

His wife was understandably devastated
by this. I mean, they had a young child

at home. She was not even three years
old.

And basically, she was alone.

Based on the evidence we have, we
believe Eric wants us to think he's

Wait a minute. What about the gunshot?
Somebody tried to shoot him?

Well, he owned a .38.

Didn't you tell me that, ma 'am?

I did.

Unfortunately, until we have more
information, my hands are tied.

I'm very sorry.

In the end, We both agreed that Eric had
engineered his own disappearance.

And it was let go at that time.

When Kathy zeroes in on the date of
Eric's disappearance.

Nancy, my head is about to explode.

She finally connects the dots.

He left his wife and his three -year
-old daughter literally there one day,

gone the next. And it gets worse.

I called the county clerk's office.

There's no divorce paperwork.

Not only had he been married before, he
had never divorced that woman that would

give him two wives at the same time.

Everything that he told me, all a lie.
But I think that he made all of that up

to cover up the real truth.

I think he killed someone.

What? And I am going to get to the
bottom of it, so help me God.

Uncovering too many lies to count, Kathy
Spires is certain her ex -husband's

past includes something criminal.

She contacts the Alameda County
Sheriff's Office.

Eric Wright.

To share her findings.

So she gets one of the deputies on the
phone and she starts to tell the whole

story. I guess what I'm asking is, do
you have any homicides from the early

that involved gold?

to let him have the last word of this

cases in their books involving gold and
when they do detective i think i found

something what is it they find that
kathy spires detective work has paid off

ways she could have never imagined it's
a cold case from 1980.

Seven gold bars gone.

San Joaquin County had an outstanding
cold case from 1980, which was Lester

Marks, who had been murdered, and there
was 18 pounds of gold missing.

I need the original missing persons file
for Eric Wright. So that sparked San

Joaquin to open an old and cold
investigation on Mr. Marks and pursue

investigation of Eric Wright.

John Huber reaches out to Special Agent
Bob Luca, one of the original

investigators.

I was actually quite surprised when I
received a phone call from John Huber.

Lester Marks, white male, divorced,
worked as a gold dealer.

His body was so decomposed they couldn't
figure out how he was killed.

Piece by piece, they reconstruct the
timeline of both men.

Here, take a look at this photo.

Does this phone number look familiar?

And that's when they find a connection
that they'd missed in 1980.

It's found in Lester Marks' office.

Yep. Right there.

Yep. That's Eric's business number for
Consolidated Minds.

Eric Wright's phone number.

That was an aha moment.

It's got to be him.

Yeah, but we need more.

We need to find someone who might have
seen him together.

We should talk to Lester's son,

Ronnie Marks.

Investigators never had enough to charge
Ronnie, but he went on to have his fair

share of trouble anyway.

He ended up in Nevada Department of
Corrections for dope and property

certainly wanted to talk to him and see
if he knew anything about Derek Wright.

It's about your dad's murder, Ronnie.

Does the name Eric Wright mean anything
to you?

Yeah, it sure does.

He was a lieutenant at the sheriff's
office, busted me for burglary.

Ronnie had been arrested prior to his
father's murder for theft.

He claims Eric Wright approached him
with an offer. Ronnie says that a dirty

had tried to negotiate a deal for his
dad's gold for a plea bargain.

He knew my dad had gold bars.

Hell, everybody knew. It wasn't a big
secret.

But he said he could help me out if my
dad gave him the gold.

He said his father -in -law was a Judge
Baker.

And he would put in a word for me if he
got the gold.

All the pieces start falling into place.

Nothing ever happens.

Next thing I hear, Wright is no longer a
cop.

And he owns his own precious metal
business.

So maybe you should be asking him the
questions.

The deal fell through.

But Eric Wright had his sights set on
Lester Mark's gold.

He was going to get it, one way or
another.

Investigators launch a manhunt for Eric
Wright, and soon they find out that he's

left the country.

The FBI task force tracked him into
Mexico, arrested him, and deported him

within the day.

After 22 years on the run, Eric Wright
is questioned by authorities, but he

stonewalls. It's not against the law to
change your name.

Leave the country, is it?

No, it's not.

As long as you don't leave a murder
behind.

Eric never admitted killing Lester
Marks. He never admitted knowing Lester

Marks. Prosecutors had hoped to charge
Wright with murder.

But key witnesses have since died, and
others just refused to testify.

I think that he believed that he was
going to get convicted based on the

evidence presented, and he decided to
take a plea to manslaughter.

And was sentenced based on a
manslaughter charge.

Investigators and prosecutors believe.

Okay, so you want to weigh it?

They know what happened the night Lester
was murdered.

On August 1st, 1980, Lester Marks goes
to Eric's office under the assumption

Wright is going to make a major buy.

But I do have a problem.
