So they really didn't know what they were dealing with.

It was a summer for the ages, when hippies rocked out at Woodstock.

Young people rallied to protest the Vietnam War, and the first man landed on

moon. We came out of the 50s, post -war, and it was sort of a time of growth and

a time of innocence.

Nobody worried about anything.

Hitchhiking was very prevalent.

There wasn't that fear.

especially females. They were hitchhiking all over the country.

But that time of innocence, it came to a standstill real fast.

Arlo and I got into this huge fight last night.

I don't even know how it started.

Family didn't think anything about it. They just went on and had dinner and

didn't worry about it. Well, a week or two later, nobody's heard from Lee.

Where is she? Where's my daughter, Arlo? Look, Mr. Hayline, I haven't heard from

her in a couple weeks. A couple of weeks?

You said she was sick. At that point, he admitted that he actually wasn't

telling the truth, that Lee wasn't really sick.

I don't know what happened to her.

When Lee is still missing 24 hours later, Arlo files a report at the Fort

Lauderdale Police Department.

And the trail goes cold.

It's just a week before Christmas, and 22 -year -old Carmen Halleck is catching

up with her sister -in -law, Nancy.

Carmen, honey, how are you holding up?

I'm okay. I mean, some days are harder than others, but I know Mom would want

to keep pushing forward.

Her mother had passed away. She was having issues dealing with that.

So when Carmen doesn't show up on Christmas Day, Nancy is worried.

Carmen? No one had heard from Carmen, but everyone expected her there for the

holidays.

fed, and there is absolutely no way that Carmen would have neglected or

That really made clear that something probably happened very suddenly and

unexpectedly to take her out of her home.

Nancy rushes to the Fort Lauderdale Police Department to report Carmen

I last saw her about a week ago.

She had told me about this bizarre job offer.

She was going to meet the boss that night.

I knew it was a bad idea and I told her.

The officer quietly takes note of the similarity to the disappearance of Lee

Bonadiz. Really?

So now a pattern is starting to develop. Law enforcement was convinced they had

a problem.

They just didn't have a suspect.

But by late spring 1972, Gerard's overzealous concern for safety catches

It was a very down day for him to be stripped of his badge. However,

it wasn't long before he was able to reinstate himself with the job as a

sheriff in Martin County.

With so many new colleagues in Martin County, Gerard really feels the need to

But his plan is about to go horribly wrong.

Well, there were these two young girls hitchhiking, and they were going to get

themselves into trouble.

So I thought it would be best if I taught them a lesson.

Deputy Sheriff Gerard Schaefer is patrolling the Jensen Beach area.

I think I went there, like, a while ago.

When he spots two young women hitchhiking on the side of the road.

Keep the girls headed.

Well, we're not causing any trouble, officer. We're just going to the beach.

That's a couple miles from here. He was just checking on them. That was what

Gerard did. He made sure that especially young women were safe.

18 -year -old Nancy Trotter and 17 -year -old Paula Wells are seeking an

adventure far from home.

Where are you girls from?

Michigan.

You look a little young to be doing that sort of thing.

Two pretty girls like you can get into a lot of trouble by getting into cars

with people you don't know.

Trust me, I've seen some bad things in my day.

Well, we made it here just fine, and everyone we've met's been really nice.

Yeah, we can really take care of ourselves.

He talks to them about don't they know how dangerous hitchhiking is. He even

tells them it's illegal.

In the early 1960s, mid -1970s, young people hitchhiked all across the country

all the time.

And nobody worried about anything.

No kids would come to Florida, spend a couple of days, and go back home.

The next day, Saturday.

With the girls in the car, Gerard can't help himself.

And when they laugh, that... really offends him and makes him think that

not taking him seriously.

And at that point, Schaefer makes the decision that he needs to really scare

them straight.

They go to Hutchinson Island.

In that time period, there was nothing on Hutchinson Island. It was desolate.

And Schaefer tells them, get out.

He was really trying to teach them a lesson.

But his entire plan falls.

Bob hops in his car, races up A1A, and he sees this girl that's still in

handcuffs. My name is Sheriff Crowder.

Everything is going to be okay, but I need you to tell me what happened.

A policeman handcuffed my friend Nancy and I and left us in the middle of the

woods. Okay, take a deep breath. Where is Nancy? Is she okay?

I don't know. We ran in different ways.

Can you show me which way she went?

I'm going to take these handcuffs off of you.

Paula leads the sheriff into the swamp,

but there's still no sign of Nancy.

In that moment, I think Sheriff Crowder went, oh, I've made a gross

miscalculation.

Martin County Sheriff Robert Crowder is speechless after finding 18 -year -old

Nancy Trotter and 17 -year -old Paula Wells.

Nancy, I know that this is difficult, but I need you to explain to me what

happened.

He was taking us to Jensen Beach, and then everything was fine, and then he

freaked out. It was like he turned into a completely different person.

The young women describe in grisly detail how his new deputy, Gerard

is responsible.

Where are we?

Uh, this doesn't look like the beach, so what are we doing here?

I'm going to teach you a lesson.

I told you all not to get in the car.

Okay, now we're going to start walking, okay?

These young girls thought they were with a police officer who was lecturing them

about safety.

All of a sudden, they find themselves in a horrifyingly dangerous situation.

After Schaefer handcuffs these two girls, he gags them.

He puts nooses around their necks.

Shut up!

I tried to warn you two about the dangers of getting into cars with

And look what's happened now. The nooses are such that if you move too much one

way or another, you're liable to hang yourself.

I can do...

I've got some boys down the road that are interested in nice little girls like

you. You want that?

Schaefer told him he was going to sell them into white slavery.

So now, you stay right here.

They're in a panic.

If they lose their balance, they will die a very violent, long...

and painful death.

But the girls don't give up so easily.

One of them figures out how to bend her body back enough without falling off to

get the noose out from around her neck.

Then she figures out how to get the gag off of her mouth.

If you saw it in a movie, you'd say it was overdone, but it was one of those

miracles.

We need to split up. You go that way.

Okay. Okay.

Schaefer is arrested and charged with false imprisonment and aggravated

I think it probably surprised everybody.

Especially when you look at Schaefer himself.

I mean, he makes a very good appearance.

Gerard's wife, Teresa, can't believe her husband is in jail for trying to help

these women.

Teresa completely stands by her husband, and she is saying he was trying to do

the right thing.

Given Gerard's clean record and status in law enforcement, he cuts the deal and

pleads guilty to just one count of assault.

often happens, cases get negotiated, so he's ultimately given a six -month

sentence.

Meanwhile, young women continue to vanish in Florida.

Tell me about the last time you've seen your daughter.

Well, she went to the beach with some friends, Georgia Jessup and this guy

named Jerry.

On October 1st, 1972... We're going to have a bonfire and play the guitar.

Lucille Place reports her 17 -year -old daughter, Susan, has been gone for three

days.

Are you sure about this guy? I mean, he seems a lot older than you. How did you

meet him again? My Aunt Sue was a typical teenager and was...

going out and spending time with friends and trying to find out who she was

going to be.

They tried to track that, but it didn't help them, and they didn't get a hit on

the car or on the plate.

And that led to essentially a dead end.

The case of Susan Place and Georgia Jessup is filed away with the many other

missing women.

What the hell?

That is, until a heartbreaking clue is unearthed two hours north.

What is that?

The sheriff's department responded and found what appeared to be a shallow

with skeletal remains.

Over the next two days, they find two upper torsos, 13 teeth, an arm bound

rope, and a leg inside a pair of blue jeans.

The remains turned out to be two females.

An important piece of evidence was a jawbone.

that had what appeared to be a hole in the jawbone, and so the cause of death

was probably by a gunshot wound.

In Oakland Park, Lucille Place is still looking for her daughter Susan and the

man named Jerry who took her to the beach.

Her attempts to keep hope and to keep looking were very difficult the more

went on.

Lucille refuses to give up her search, and weeks later, Her tenacity paves off.

My grandma was looking at the license plates and had a light bulb go off.

She made the connection that the plate that she saw must have been registered

a different county. So she immediately went to law enforcement.

They found that it was registered to Gerard Schaefer.

Jerry Shepard is actually Gerard Schaefer.

So I want you to take a really good look at these.

Do you recognize the man that picked up your daughter?

That's him.

I'm sure of it.

She finds out that Gerard Schaefer is in jail.

She finds out that he's committed a crime, that he'd been a police officer,

she had to really be very confused and even more worried at this point.

Do you recognize this?

One of the females had a patch that was actually sewn on the jeans of the

cartoon figure, the Roadrunner.

Susan, where is she?

Ma 'am, I'm so sorry.

Oh, no.

Oh, not my baby.

I can't imagine how heartbreaking that moment must have been for my grandma.

But how could Schaefer have killed Susan and Georgia if he was already in jail?

Schaefer, you made bail.

Open cell three.

Turns out he posted bail in early September and did not report to serve

sentence until January of 1973.

So there was a window of opportunity when he was not yet incarcerated when he

could have committed this crime.

At rapid speed.

Investigators get a warrant to search Schaefer's home.

What they find causes a firestorm that Florida has never encountered before.

Detectives swarm Gerard Schaefer's home, looking for any evidence connecting the

former deputy to the murders of Susan Place and Georgia Jessup.

That was a fairly large home.

And so we searched for quite a long time, and we really hadn't come up with

anything to necessarily tie him in.

And so it was becoming frustrating.

I think I found his secret porn collection.

Schaefer was very much into pornography, and they found in some of his

pornographic magazines a document.

I went over and started flipping through the magazines, and a two -page document

fell out.

He went on to describe about taking girls in pairs, saying that they were

wary when traveling in pairs.

Well, we're not causing any trouble, officer. We're just going to the beach.

It may be more preferable to bind and gag the victims before taking them to

their place of execution.

Yeah.

So that was a very, very incriminating piece of evidence because that was

written in his own handwriting.

And that's not all investigators find.

Hidden in the closet is an antique trunk.

The trunk for law enforcement was a goldmine.

Now we got something.

They find all kinds of jewelry.

They find...

Gold teeth.

There's a ton of them in here. It's a damn trophy box.

And they realize that they're dealing with somebody who is completely

preoccupied with and fetishizes murdering and torturing women.

On May 18, 1973, just two weeks before he was to be released from jail,

Schaefer is charged with the murders of Susan Place and Georgia Jessup.

He pleads not guilty.

His wife, Teresa, does all she can to defend her man.

I've missed you so much.

What is going on?

The newspapers are just saying such awful things about you. You can't

any of it. It's all a huge mistake.

And I just wish you could come home.

Teresa didn't believe it. He couldn't have done these things. He wasn't that

kind of man. He was kind. He was loving. He could not have...

At trial, the prosecution lays out Schaefer's insidious double life.

Along with Robert Stone, assistant attorney Philip Shaler argues that after

Nancy Trotter and Paula Wells escape,

Gerard is on a war path for revenge.

And he's going to take it out on Susan Place and Georgia Jessup.

He mentally tortured them. He physically tortured them. He emotionally tortured

Police believe he strangles Georgia Jessup and shoots Susan Place in the

For my grandparents and for my dad and having to sit and listen to

been he was smug i mean he actually had a look of confidence on his face a smile

on his face i don't think there was any way shape or form that he in his own

mind felt he was going to be convicted i i didn't do it i don't think the state

has proved that i did it in any way and the testimony of my witnesses conjured

counteracted the testimony of the other witnesses.

In September 1973, the jury finds Gerard Schaefer guilty of murder.

He is sentenced to life without parole.

At that particular time in Florida, we couldn't seek the death penalty.

If there was ever a case that deserved the death penalty, this was a case.

For my grandma, knowing that he was still alive in prison, she never felt

there was truly that justice.

For Susan.

As for the items found in Schaefer's trunk, investigators trace a charm

to Lee Bonadiz.

Her body is found in Boca Raton in 1978.

Schaefer is never charged with her murder.

Gold -capped teeth and a shamrock pin are determined to belong to Carmen

And an address book is linked to Belinda Hutchins.

Their bodies are never found, and Schaefer is never charged with their
