And done.

Almost.

It was a week before Christmas in 2002, and Angela Matthews was home alone

because her roommate is gone.

There.

Now I'm done.

Marnie? Here she is sound asleep in her own bed where she should be completely

safe.

And she hears footsteps coming into her apartment.

And I will kill you.

The next thing she knows, there's a man on top of her holding a knife,

threatening to split her throat.

She must have been absolutely terrified.

Stand up now.

Right over there.

Please don't do anything.

Shut up.

It was the beginning of her worst nightmare.

Help, please.

Now take off your clothes.

You're dead.

Angela Matthews waits until she's certain her attacker is gone.

Then calls 911.

She's rushed to the hospital, bruised and shaken. But luckily...

Still alive.

Hi.

Okay, I'm just going to take a look at your neck, okay?

Great.

Angela, did he... What?

Um... No.

No, he didn't. He tried.

And then he just stopped. I don't know.

Okay. Okay.

All right.

I know this is really hard, but the officer just wants to ask you some

about what happened.

Okay. All right.

Thank you.

Angela, I'm with the Bloomington police.

Now, I know this is the worst possible time for questions, but we have to get

this man.

Yeah, it's okay.

What can you tell me about him?

She described her attacker as wearing a black ski mask and all black clothing.

He put a length of twine around her neck.

One physical trait that she was able to remember for sure was his keen blue

eyes. He did engage the victim in conversation about him watching her.

He knew she had a roommate, and he had been planning to do the same thing to

her. This is a very dangerous man who may strike again.

All right, settle in.

Have a seat.

You guys will see on the overnight sheet, we had some car break -ins over

Bryan Park.

Just an hour or so after Angela is discharged from the hospital, the day

takes over at Bloomington Police Headquarters.

I want your focus on number three, sexual assault.

When the news of Angela's sexual assault came into the Bloomington Police

Department, it became a priority case because there are not a lot of sexual

assaults in the Bloomington Normal Area.

He made it clear he was watching her and her roommate.

Matt, Clay, you guys are leading on this. Copy that, Chief. We're on it. Two

the veteran detectives for the department, Clay Wheeler and Matthew

assigned to start working on this case.

We need to get this guy off the street before he hurts somebody else.

All right, that's it. Be safe.

Thanks, Chief.

Hold on. Hold on. Look at this.

Where'd you get that?

Knock it off.

Period. Sergeant Jeffrey Pilo is very well respected at the police department.

He was in the Navy before joining the police force where he was a former

policeman of the year.

Keep your eyes open out there. You heard what the chief said before he hurt

someone else.

I worked with him almost as closely as a partner.

He seemed to be a good friend to people.

He would go out of his way to help them.

Bloomington Police, Sergeant Pilo.

Hi. I'm not sure if I've got the right person. I wanted to file a complaint.

You can start with me, and we will get you to the right person.

Okay.

Well, I just don't know what to do anymore.

I'm not sure, but I think it might be my ex. I had had a bad ending to a

relationship. Within a few months of it ending, I had hang -up phone calls. I

had mail stolen.

Not too long ago, I came home and found the ceiling crawl space open.

So I'm really worried.

Well, you have to take these things seriously. So I will start a file for

Okay. Why don't you give me your name and your phone number and address?

It's... Janelle Glasgow.

55 Maxwell Street.

The officer was pretty helpful and spent quite a lot of time on the phone with

me, asking questions and getting my personal information.

I've got a daughter, so I know what it's like out there. Thank you so much.

It feels better just to...

After a long day, Jeff Pilo is finally home with his family.

Hello. Hey.

Ah, look who's home.

Hey.

You were just in time.

Yeah. Put your finger right there.

Here? Mm -hmm.

Jeff meets his future wife, Rikki Lee, while he's still in the military.

He's 22.

She's just 17.

When Ricky Lee and Jeff first got married, it was a little bit of a

It wasn't until he joined the police department and started working a lot of

hours that they started to become a little more financially stable.

They start a family right away and welcome daughter Shayla, another

son soon follow.

It was a good upbringing.

My dad was an awesome father. He really was. My mom, she's very much the stay

-at -home caretaker.

Loved just to be at home with us. My dad worked a lot. For a majority of my

upbringing, it was third shift.

He loved his job. To be a police officer was everything to him.

Hey.

Something bugging you?

No.

This young girl was attacked in her home.

She's not much older than Shayla.

It just gets me.

Sometimes, you know?

It's awful.

But it's Christmas.

If my dad had something tragic or something that happened on the job, you

he would convey that to the family to make it important.

Well, we've got every cop on Bloomington looking for the guy, so we're going to

get him.

Yeah.

Got to let that go.

Come on.

Let's go to bed.

You first.

There she is.

What are you doing up till late?

Tomorrow.

Oh, yeah?

What subject?

Algebra. All right, kiddo.

Not too late, because all the studying in the world won't do any good if you're

half asleep and the test starts.

Okay. Good night.

Good night.

It was really cool to grow up and see everything that he did. Everyone has

dad as their hero, you know, and mine was a police officer.

Christmas comes and goes, and despite Bloomington Police's best efforts to

Angela's attacker, he's still out there, somewhere.

There was a real sense of urgency on the part of the police department to try to

find the person responsible for this.

Lindsay Lewis was just a few months away from her 26th birthday.

Absolutely terrified.

I'm only here to rob you.

Good girl.

But you know what?

I changed my mind.

No, please, please, don't.

Get off!

25 -year -old Lindsay Lewis has just been viciously assaulted in her bedroom.

The attacker put duct tape around her mouth and around her head. She thought

was either going to smother or she was just going to be killed by him.

It's a pretty nice place you have here.

Do you live here by yourself?

You have a boyfriend?

I wonder what he would think about what we just did.

As if it can't get any worse, after he finishes, he begins to taunt her.

This isn't just a rape. He is there to drag this out, to get out of it whatever

he came for, to torture her psychologically.

Get up.

Get up.

But then, the conversation turns into commands.

Get up!

Come on!

Come on.

All right.

Okay. Step on this.

Hold there. Down right there.

Step up.

Into the tub.

Okay. All right.

Sit down.

At this point, she has to be thinking that he's going to drown her or that

going to shoot her in the bathtub. She has no idea what is going on. All the

in the water.

So, watch yourself.

She's been brutally assaulted in her own home, and now she's being forced to

take a bath and clean herself in front of this man to make sure that he hasn't

left any evidence behind. He's asked her to basically wash away everything that

he's done to her.

As she leaves the bathroom, she's walking through her house looking for

phone, not knowing if he's still there, if he's hiding somewhere, if he's going

to attack her again.

Once she's sure the attacker is gone, Lindsay Lewis calls 911.

Detectives Matthew Dick and Clay Wheeler are among the first investigators on

the scene.

The victim, Lindsay Lewis, said it was a white male dressed in all black.

wore a mask and talked to me.

Even used a flashlight and shined it right in her eyes.

You think it's the same purpose Angela Matthews attacked her?

I think it's a possibility.

Made her take a bath.

Took the bed sheets with him.

He knows what he's doing.

A CSI team scours Lindsay's apartment for hours but find nothing that

could ID the rapist.

He was pretty sophisticated and pretty smart about the way he went about his

crimes and cleaning up after himself. This attacker was really putting them in

very, very bad spot.

Bloomington police double their efforts to catch the masked predator.

Sergeant Jeff Pilo is promoted and given more responsibility.

But with his new duties come longer hours and overnight shifts.

Jeff was making great strides.

professionally. But that was coming at a cost in his personal life.

It's 5 a .m. again.

I know what time it is.

Jeff.

I've been a cop's wife for 17 years. I know how it works.

You're a sergeant.

Sergeants don't work the overnight shift.

Guys who have five mouths to feed do.

You're never here.

God, me, the kids, we're just something that you pass through between shifts.

I'm tired of it.

We need the money, okay? What do you want me to do?

I want you to tell me the truth.

Is there someone else?

She did feel like my dad was cheating on her. He came home late at night, and

then he would just immediately go take a shower.

Are you having an affair?

Baby, there's nothing to tell.

I'm working.

I've got a serial rapist out there. All the guys are pulling extra hours. That's

it.

That's it?

That's it.

She was reliant in every way you could be reliant on a husband during their

marriage. If he...

had been going out with some other woman, it would have been the end of

everything that she knew at the time.

Look, if it'll make you feel better, I'll go talk to the captain tomorrow.

I'll go to the A -side.

Okay? You will?

Yeah.

Don't you think I want to go on a date night again?

Jeff gives up the night shift, makes up with Ricky Lee, and their marriage seems

to be back on track.

Meanwhile, Janelle Galeska is still receiving lots of strange phone calls.

After I made the police report, it got so much worse.

Hello?

I started getting calls on my cell phone that I hadn't had before.

Dozens of times sometimes.

Is there someone there?

I mean, it caused a lot of anxiety for me.

So I started paying attention to my surroundings.

I notice that somebody is behind me and then I see him like cover his face like

this and then look like he's starting to change the radio.

It just felt so suspicious that my adrenaline kicked in.

So at that point, I decided to get out my cell phone, and I called my best

friend.

Nikki? Nikki, this is going to sound crazy, but I think someone's following

Yeah, I'm trying!

He's behind me!

Once I had pulled up to a light, he finally pulled off, and

he's no longer following me.

Yeah, I'm here.

Can you just stay on the phone till I get home?

I just thought maybe this is the serial rapist and maybe he is after me.

By the winter of 2005, yet another woman has been assaulted in the same way as

Lindsay Lewis and Angela Matthews.

Stalking, ski masks, duct tape, and a bath to wash away the DNA afterwards.

Suddenly people didn't want to go out at night. And the scariest thing of all is

they weren't safe in their own homes either. That's where he was attacking

women, safe at home with their doors locked. And he was still finding a way

come in. The police, they felt like they were kind of racing against an unknown

clock because they didn't know if or when this attacker would strike again.

And the attack on January 25th will be the worst one yet.

This guy learned that she was pregnant.

And not only did he not care, but he used it against her, shows that he

has some psychopathic tendencies.

Can you tell us what happened?

He just came out of nowhere.

He was just there at the foot of my bed.

He had a gun. The serial rapist terrorizing the women of Bloomington,

claims a fourth victim.

This time, it's 28 -year -old Sophia Minor.

Sophia Minor was six weeks from her wedding. It was a happy time in her

She woke up to find a man standing over her with a gun to her head.

Did he say anything to you?

If you scream,

I will kill you.

I'll never get that voice out of my head.

He told me he was watching me for six months.

He knew she was a restaurant manager, knew what kind of car she drove, when

went to work.

I told him that I am pregnant.

Proceeding with a rape on a woman who he knew was pregnant and then apparently

delighting in it is just another level of coldness that I don't think anyone

seen before.

After four assaults, detectives Wheeler and Dick are still without a suspect.

It was very frustrating because we had very little evidence.

The serial rapist terrorizing Bloomington is all over the news.

And no one's more on edge than Janelle Galeska.

After the car incident, definitely I became more vigilant.

Hey, babe.

Hey.

I can't believe my presentation's tomorrow.

You're going to do amazing.

Can you set me alarm for seven?

Of course. I'll make sure you're up bright and early.

It's after 10 o 'clock. I just knew. I'm like, this is one of those calls.

The phone calls were getting ridiculous.

We had contacted the police, and they said that they cannot do anything about

it.

Just let it ring. No.

Janelle, just hang up.

Stop calling me!

Babe.

It's gonna be okay.

So I'm just doing... I knew, like, for sure, 100 % at that point in time,

something was gonna happen.

I got my baseball bat ready, you know, bring it.

I hear footsteps in the backyard.

Look out there, and I see this guy standing in Janelle's yard.

Janelle.

Janelle. What?

Call 911.

There's a man in your yard.

There really is some weird guy that is out to get me.

Yeah,

I need someone to come to my house right away. There's a man outside my window.

What the hell are you doing out there? Get the hell out of here.

Please, hurry.

He's still here.

Freaking creep.

I wanted to kill this dude.

Tell you what, stay right there.

I'm going to kick your ass.

Scott, no.

Stay here.

Next thing I know, Scott is running past me.

It's 55 Maxwell Street.

I warned you to get the hell out of here. The police are on their way.

And then I stopped and I said, all right, I'm naked with a baseball bat

at the top of my lungs on a Sunday night. I was like, I need to get back.

A close call for Janelle.

And with the search for this elusive predator stretching into its third year,

police are desperate to track him down before one more woman is attacked.

We've had four attacks and almost a fifth.

And we brought in the FBI to put together a profile.

Agent Crary?

Thanks, Detective.

So, based on our analysis, I'm afraid you all have been looking in the wrong

place.

The Bloomington Police Department did seek help from the FBI to help develop a

suspect profile.

The investigative efforts up to that point had focused on people with

of sexual assault or on the sex offender registry.

The profile really pointed in a different direction.

We know this guy is smart. He does his homework.

He knows how to conceal his identity. Mask, gloves.

He makes the women bathe. Washes away all the DNA.

leaves nothing behind.

He most likely has a background in forensics, probably military.

I think he could be CSI. Wait a minute, wait a minute.

So you're saying this guy is a cop?

I'm just saying consider all the options and don't rule anyone out.

The police realized they need to be looking for someone that could be in

own backyard, and that was pretty shocking.

This is probably someone that doesn't have a substantial criminal history. His

friends, his family, his co -workers are all going to be shocked as to who it

is. Police use the profile in hopes of finding the serial rapist, but it leads

them nowhere.

Six months go by with no new leads and no new attacks.

But that doesn't mean the threat or the danger is gone.

Janelle Galeska is still on guard, especially because her now -fiancé Scott

away on business.

My heart sank. Like, my adrenaline's rushing because it's late at night. Why

somebody knocking on my door?

As soon as I stepped foot on the front porch, I just had this immediate feeling

like go back in the house.

Someone keeps on knocking on my door and running away. It's making my dogs

crazy.

Can you send someone out here?

Within minutes, the police arrive.

First on the scene is Officer David Patton.

Hey! Hey, stop!

When the officer shows up, He sees someone off to the side of the house,

like they're trying to hide. Stop right there. Do not move.

Don't make me shoot you, man.

Put your hands over your head where I can see them.

And turn towards me.

Do it slowly.

Don't make me shoot you, man.

Put your hands over your head where I can see them.

Turn towards me.

Do it slowly.

All of a sudden, Jeff Pelo is found outside a woman's house at one o 'clock

the morning.

What are you doing here?

Sarge, did you get the call too?

No.

It's my mother -in -law.

She's looking to move, and I'm trying to help her out. She told me there was a

house for sale up here.

So you're looking for real estate for your mother -in -law at 1 a .m.? Yeah.

I know it looks weird, but, I mean, when else am I going to do it?

I'm day side now. I just pulled a double today.

I know, but you can't be doing this.

Just take off, huh?

I got it from you.

All right. Thanks. I'll see you tomorrow.

Okay, Sarge.

He starts to question, why is the sergeant here? It really makes no sense

when he has a moment to really reflect on it.

The next morning, Officer Patton tells Detectives Wheeler and Dick about his

strange encounter.

About that, you know, what she was saying.

Hey, Patton.

Tell us what happened last night.

All right, so I'm at this house.

I get a call after midnight.

There's a man out there,

Sergeant Pilo.

He was there, just kind of hanging around.

Said he was looking for a house for his mother -in -law.

It was very strange.

It just didn't make sense. Any police officer knows that you don't go up onto

somebody's private property at that time of the morning.

Well, the guy's my boss, so I... No, no, we get it. And what was her name again,

the homeowner?

Janelle Galecka.

Let's go to tech, see what we can find out. Thanks, Pat.

Thanks.

Look up G -A -L -U -S -K -A.

Show me every officer that ran her info.

Six officers.

There he is.

Try Sophia Minor.

Same thing.

He ran her license plate, address.

He ran plates on Jennifer Minor, Sophia's mother, too.

Where is he?

Taking his lieutenant's exam.

Let's go have a word.

Where's Larry?

He's out there. The tables are turned.

Pee -lo is now the suspect.

No, I'm pissed off.

I didn't do anything wrong.

He's stumbling over his words. He's angry.

He's very panicky. He's overly defensive.

To

me,

that excuse of, Out looking for a house for my mother -in -law. I just had a lot

of holes.

Pilo's strategy is clear.

He denies everything, over and over.

I did not knock on anybody's door.

I did not knock on anybody's door. As police officers, we don't walk around at

and 30 at night walking in between houses. I walked up between the houses.

That's it.

Police have seen and heard enough, and they arrest Sergeant Pilo for attempted

burglary and stalking.

For years, they worked with a man who they didn't know.

They're supposed to be the ones who safeguard the community, not who inflict

fear upon people.

While the sergeant sits behind bars, police ransack his house looking for any

evidence to link him to the four assaults.

What they find is staggering.

On June 10, 2006, Bloomington police searched the home of one of their own

sergeants.

They start with Jeff Pilo's computer.

We were able to find pornography on his computer.

It wasn't just run -of -the -mill porn. It was searches for brutal rapes. There

were images of uniformed people committing rapes.

And under all the clutter, they find his tools of the trade.

flashlights, ski masks, gloves, and a jacket.

As police scour the pillow house, Ricky Lee and her daughter Shayla arrive home.

They have no idea what is waiting for them. Ma 'am, where are you going?

It's okay, it's okay.

There were squad cars, an FBI van, and they were lined in our driveway. I'm

thinking, these people here are telling me my dad's dead.

Is Jeff all right?

No, Ricky Lee.

Jeff's not all right.

I don't know how to tell you this.

He's in jail.

Jail?

What do you mean he's in jail? We arrested him this morning for stalking

attempted burglary.

I hate to say it, Ricky Lee, I really do, but there's going to be more coming,

lot more.

Mom, what is going on?

That's what I want to know.

She's been married to this man for 13 years. She's known him as police officer

of the year, devoted husband, devoted father.

Matt, how long have you known Jack?

I mean, what are you even talking about?

This is outrageous.

And you know it, too.

Do you think Jack did this?

This is crazy.

You two ought to be ashamed of yourselves. Mom, calm down.

My mom's crying. She's screaming. I can't get her to calm down.

It was like someone just punched me in the gut. I didn't know how to respond. I

didn't know what to do.

You have to do anything.

I know my husband.

Ricky Lee?

He's going to need a lawyer.

When you look back at it, you realize that's the day your life changed.

None of Pilo's victims ever saw his face, except one, Janelle Galeska.

She comes in to make a final ID.

Let's bring in the lineup, please.

Number one, step forward.

No. Thank you, number one.

Number two, step forward.

No.

Thank you, number two.

Number three, step forward.

Wait. I see the guy that had been following me that day.

They had the same style haircut, the same face shape.

That one.

Tim, you sure?

You sure? With him.

Okay. I knew it was him, and this was finally over.

This guy is caught now.

I could finally let all the shame go. I could let all of the pain go, but I

never gave up. Like, it was a habit to look out for myself after that, and I'm

never going to stop doing it.

Jeff Pilo is charged with an additional 35 felonies, but his wife's faith and

devotion never wavers.

I talked to the bank about a loan today.

They want me to put the house up.

At this point, my mom was very, very caught up in that he is innocent and did

anything she could to help him and get him out of jail. She emptied out her

savings to pay for the lawyers, to pay for this, and I'm talking hundreds of

thousands of dollars.

I had nothing to do with this at all.

I know.

I know you're innocent.

At Jeff Pilo's trial, the prosecution tells the jury about how Pilo used his

position to find, stalk, and then rape his victims.

They used his pornography searches as evidence against him because what he was

searching for and watching was very similar to how he carried out his

Pilo's wife is there every day of the trial.

She even testifies, claiming Jeff was with her on the night of one of the

assaults.

She truly believed that he was innocent, and she was trying to keep her husband,

the father of her children, out of prison.

But one victim after another takes the stand and testifies that Jeff Pilo is

their attacker.

Those women were brave, and they told their story, and it wasn't an easy one

tell what happened to them.

After a six -week trial, jurors find Jeffrey Pilo guilty on all 37 charges

against him.

He is sentenced to 440 years, later reduced to 375 years.

This was the ultimate betrayal.

The fact that he was able to lead such a double life, to be this family man and

former police officer of the year, while out not just raping women but degrading

them and doing horrible things to them and torturing them psychologically, it's

just a bizarre case.

It's hard to even come to a conclusion if he is guilty or innocent. I've told

him this no matter what, even if he did or didn't do it.

He's my dad. I feel badly for the victims. I really do. But they've got

wrong man.

I know my husband is not guilty.

I know the Bloomington Police Department is behind this. Thank you.

The community looks towards their police officers to help protect them.

And he betrayed his whole community.

Jeffrey Pilo is where he needs to be to keep other women safe.
