Many years ago, my great -grandfather founded this enduring paper.
And for his son and his son's son, publishing the paper was a privilege and
obligation, a pleasure and a burden.
As it was for them, it has been for me.
My life is this newspaper, this business.
And so, feeling a potent mixture of emotions, I stand here to announce the
passing of that imposing torch.
to the next generation.
I look around the room and I see the faces of the people who have helped make
tenure here so successful and gratifying.
And I offer my deep thanks to every one of them.
I will still be a familiar face in these halls, continuing to serve on the board
of directors and as a trustee to our parent company, the Reese Corporation.
But I will be stepping down as publisher.
I think it's right, and in keeping with the paper's tradition, that I nominate a
member of my own family to the post of publisher.
And fortuitously, I have a worthy successor in my son -in -law, William
McAllister.
He is a decent and competent man.
and I hope that he will enjoy the same tireless support that you have all so
graciously given to me.
That's her.
This was 15 years ago.
That's your mother?
I've been looking for her for weeks now, and I'm no closer to finding her than
when I started.
I need someone who knows Pasadena.
So what makes you think she's in Pasadena?
Henry, I want to help you, but you're going to have to tell me everything.
Well, when my dad died, I went through his things.
And I found out that she'd been sending us money.
No letters, and there were no addresses.
But all the envelopes were postmarked in Pasadena.
Yeah. Can you leave this with me?
Um, yeah.
I'm just paranoid. I mean, my brother can't know about this.
Why? Because he hates her.
For leaving us.
Why'd she leave you?
She married young.
My dad, he had problems.
You know, I don't really know. I mean, that's why I want to find her.
I don't think she wants to be found.
I don't really care what she wants.
I haven't told anyone about this.
Don't worry, I can keep the secret.
You know, ever since we've become friends with Lily, she's been acting
differently towards me.
She's suspicious.
And I just hope that you realize that I can be trusted.
We'll find her.
Henry, what are you doing here?
I, uh, came by to see you.
Well, here I am.
But, actually, I gotta go.
Uh, my brother needs a car.
But I'll call you later tonight.
Bye.
Bye.
What's going on?
I don't know. It's your friend.
Here we are.
Bacon, scrambled egg, and sausage.
My God, Pilar, you really have done yourself.
Oh, it's nothing.
Enjoy. And I have to tell you, the house has been immaculate.
Speaking of which, I was cleaning the guest bathroom, and
I found the behind the vent.
What? Why are you all looking at me?
Are they yours, Mason?
No. Ew! What were you doing in the bathroom?
Nothing. Shut up.
And I also found this.
I know what that's for.
Mona Kenyon, next door.
Mason's peeper.
You can get rid of these, Pilar. Are you sure?
Yeah, you can throw them in the trash.
Your father never said so many nice things about me in his entire life, not
at our wedding.
Was my mother there?
She was holding court.
I didn't think I saw her shed a tear.
She asked if we could do a little thing over here tomorrow night for your
father. I said it'd be fine.
What? It'll be easy, just a few people from the office.
No, I'm not having people over here on one day's notice. She can forget it.
Lily! Come on, Mason!
Catherine, the party's for me, too.
Oh, so it's a party now?
Why can't you be happy for me? I am happy for you.
I feel like I'm still being punished.
Oh, hi.
Hi.
I'm just worried about Robert. I tried calling him last night. He would not
up the phone.
This whole thing has been badly handled.
My parents have completely misled him.
As disappointing as it is for Robert, it's exciting for me.
Can't you understand that?
I can.
I'm sorry.
And you know, Robert's tough.
It may take a few days, but he'll recover.
He's a big boy.
Get that break bottle.
Are you taking it, pal?
Yeah.
Hi, Robert.
What happened
to my office?
I cleaned it up.
What's this?
It's a new computer.
The old one, you broke it.
Did I ask you to do this?
Don't ever clean up my office unless I tell you. Do you understand me?
I want this office exactly the way I want it.
You have a 10 o 'clock with the lawyers about the harassment case?
Can't collect.
They said it's really important they get a deposition.
Jenny, need some attention?
Woman? If you're more attached to your body, you wouldn't be such a stress
I'm a stress case because my mother is gaslighting me.
Okay, so she said Philip Parker murdered her best friend. But then my Uncle Nate
told me that there were rumors that Philip Parker dropped Meredith Weller
my grandparents' house the night she disappeared.
I don't get it.
Maybe my family has something to do with her disappearance.
And if they're not going to level with me, then maybe I should talk to a family
who will.
So I'm thinking I should go to the administration office, get an alumni
directory, and track down Philip Parker's family. Okay, start over.
Parker, Jenny.
Haven't you been listening to me for the last month?
No, not really.
Well, anyway, last night I come home.
Henry's over at my house talking to my mother. Then he sees me and takes off,
acting totally weird.
Really? Hey, Lily.
Hey, Jenny.
What were you doing over at Lily's house last night?
Jenny.
Came by to see Lily.
Why? I just, I felt like I was interrupting something.
What were you talking about with my mother?
Why? Did she say something to you?
Is there something to say?
No. She was just asking me about school.
Small talk, that's all.
All right, everyone.
Let's get started.
Why don't you two just go ahead and have sex and get it over with?
I've always had a problem with petulance.
And you're capricious.
Just thinking about your love life gives me vertigo.
I know, Mother. I'm pathetic.
Don't be passive -aggressive.
I could be aggressive -aggressive and kick you in the face.
You're 30 years old, Beth.
Debutants should not ripen on the vine.
Well, I'm not looking for some serious relationship. I mean, if I meet someone
cool, then great. But right now, I want to focus on my art.
I was going to wait for Catherine, but what the hell?
Karen Bloomer says she might display it in her gallery.
Not with your name on it, I hope.
Yes, Mother, with my name on it.
Hello?
Catherine, just look at this.
It's nice.
She wants to put her name on it and show it around town.
Mother, just shut up, would you?
I mean, God forbid you should say an encouraging word to one of your own
children. What in the world? You have gone too far this time.
Robert is suicidal.
What's going on with Robert? If you're talking about your father's decision, I
had nothing to do with it. You and Daddy groom him to take over, and then you
deny him. Catherine, don't be dramatic. It's just little boys fighting over
toys. Trust me.
He's not going to forgive you.
Hey, Nate.
Hey, you.
How'd you sleep?
How did I sleep?
You mean, did we do anything?
No.
Who are you?
Brick.
Met you last night with Dan and Gittle.
How did I get here?
We all came back up to party and you went through all my best coke and, uh...
Popped a couple of lewds and zonked out.
Well, uh, hey.
Thanks for... whatever.
Uh, Nate.
We got a problem.
We do?
Yeah, and it's a big one.
But I think, uh, if we put our heads together, we can work something out.
Yeah, I mean, I really gotta go.
I don't think so.
I love what you've done to the office.
Mother, for the past 12 years, all I've done is come here to try to make you and
Dad happy.
Now, the least you could have done is told me ahead of time so I don't look
a complete idiot!
When I walked into that meeting, I thought your father had chosen you.
It was only afterwards that I found out what changed his mind.
Well, what changed his mind?
Oh, darling, I... I don't want to... I mean, it's complicated enough as it is.
Mom, it's not complicated.
What changed his mind?
Your sister spoke with him.
Well, what did she say?
She lobbied for Will. She lobbied hard and evidently, very persuasively.
Will's more capable, more mature, you just want power.
She brought up the sexual harassment situation.
No way.
You know your sister has your father wrapped around her little finger.
Oh, don't be angry with Catherine. I don't think she meant to hurt you.
You two may be close, but in the end, she is going to support her husband.
Sorry, sweetheart.
All right, God.
Hi, is Big Mrs. Parker?
I think it's time we have a little talk.
Oh, no.
You've obviously been experiencing some new feelings and urges.
Um, yeah.
Let's not, okay?
You can talk to me about anything. You know that.
Okay.
Well, then I have one question.
Great, what is it?
How do I get Mona Kenyon to have sex with me?
I mean, how do I get a girl to go all the way?
Mason, you're not old enough to go all the way.
Believe me, I am.
I wake up every morning having the mattress. Sometimes, you know, I just
like I'm going to explode.
You're 14.
That's natural.
Trust me, sex without love, you're just asking for trouble.
Well, I want to get into trouble.
No, you don't.
You don't want me to have sex.
You take away my hormone. I mean, I've got hormones, Dad. What do you want me
do, go crazy?
Mother. Uh -huh?
I know about the rumors.
About our family and Meredith Weller.
What rumors?
That Philip Parker dropped her off at the Greeley house the night she
disappeared.
I thought we were finished with all that.
Those ridiculous rumors get started because people are spiteful and jealous
our family.
What is this?
Why are you trying to hurt me?
I'm not.
Well, then do me a favor. Stop bringing up the most painful event in my life.
Fine. Uncle Nate, he told me about the rumors. Your Uncle Nate is a drug addict
and hardly a credible source of information.
And what were you talking about with Henry the other day?
Lily, I have a million things to do today and a lot of people coming over to
house tonight, so forgive me if I'm not in the mood for one of your bizarre
interrogations.
You win, Dad.
I'm as low as I'm going to go.
So I give up.
I'll do whatever you want me to do.
But if I don't come up with $2 ,000 in the next 10 minutes, there's a guy out
there that's going to rip me a new one.
Literally.
You can't get $2 ,000?
You canceled my credit cards.
If Terry Bird won't return my phone call, you evicted me from my apartment.
Your mother thinks that if we cut off your funds, you won't kill yourself and
you'll move back home.
Whatever. I'll move home. I'll work here.
I need this money.
You've been an embarrassment to this family for as long as I can remember.
You've lied to us. You've stolen from us.
You've been ungrateful, disrespectful, and a useless distraction.
And I'm at the point, honestly, where I don't care what you do. You want to get
high? Go ahead.
You want to kill yourself? Go ahead.
You can have your money. I'll call Terry Bird.
All I ask is that you live your mockery of life far away from me.
Well, I guess that's it.
You can keep your money.
Ms. McAllister. Hi, Emily.
Look at this.
Her name's Paige Harder.
I don't know her very well, but she's a member of the Valley Hunt Club.
So I called her last night.
Invited her to a party at our house.
I think you should be there.
All right, start talking. There's somewhere else to be.
Okay.
Fair enough.
Look, I know you've been having a hard time finding a job. We've been having a
hard time finding you a replacement.
I feel awful about everything.
So I'm here to ask you if you want your position back.
I'm prepared to elevate your title, give you a generous raise.
So you want me to drop the lawsuit?
This isn't about the lawsuit.
You may not believe it, but I have been feeling guilty.
I screwed up.
I don't want to make any excuses.
I love my sister, so when Will asked me to get rid of you, I went a little bit
too far.
Will asked you to get rid of me?
He said he wanted to end the relationship, that you being at the
starting to be a problem. I thought you knew that.
No, I didn't.
Well, there's no reason that one man's midlife crisis should make your career
suffer.
So I'm here to tell you, I want you back.
Well, don't you look handsome?
Can you give me a ride in the McAllister's? They invited me to a party
Sure, you need me to pick you up?
Yeah, could you? Like, uh, ten?
Tom, why don't we ever talk about her?
Her?
What brought this up?
Well, I'm curious. I mean, we never talk about her. She's not worth talking
about.
Right? She abandoned her own children so she could go off in search of the high
life. Maybe there's more to it. Maybe she had a reason.
Just drop it. But don't you ever wonder, I mean, where she is? I've spent the
last 15 years wondering.
And I'm not going to waste one more minute on it.
So, she's dead.
She's in the ground, and she's dead.
Okay?
Yeah. Okay.
Millie, knock on the door.
My mother accused her son of murder. She's not exactly going to be happy to
me. Okay, well then let's go.
You're freaking me out.
No.
Hello?
Hi.
Are you Miss Parker?
Yes.
Hi, I'm Lily McAllister.
My mother is Catherine McAllister.
Catherine Greeley.
I wanted to ask you about your son.
Well, what do you want to know?
I don't know.
You want to know how his life was destroyed by your family?
You want to know how they set him up to ruin his reputation?
What did happen to Meredith Weller?
You're asking the wrong person.
Why don't you go home and ask your mother what really happened to Meredith
Weller?
That was intense.
Ah, Oliver, how are you?
Never thought I'd live to see the day.
Neither did I.
Where have you been? You don't want to know.
Well, Henry's here.
Hey, Lily.
Hey!
You guys remember Jay Lane, don't you?
All right, let's get this party started.
Dad, you remember...
Jaylene Richards, used to work in marketing.
Congratulations, Mr. Greeley, on your retirement.
I'm not retiring.
Excuse me.
Could I talk to you for a moment?
Sure.
What are you doing?
How could you bring her here?
Oh, gosh, sis, are you upset?
Yes. If I betrayed you in any way, I am all apologies. But you have to admit,
she's pretty hot. And I heard she's great in bed.
I'm getting something to drink.
Scotch and soda.
Pal, listen, I haven't had a chance to tell you how proud I am of you.
Congratulations.
What are you doing?
Oh, uh, Jaylene, yeah. I'm thinking about bringing her back to the sun. You
to admit, she's talented. You and Catherine have worked things out. Dad
says, don't let personal crap get in the way of good business. Put some more
scotch in that, please.
You've lost your mind.
Oh, my God, I forgot you're my boss.
I got to check with you before I make any more hires.
My bad. Thank you, pal.
Robert, get her out of here.
Oh, Will, I can invite whoever I want to this party.
If I'm not mistaken, I invited you here about 20 years ago.
I don't understand.
Did she call you?
No. She found me at school.
It's hard to explain.
She found you at school?
Yeah.
What is going on?
Lily, I'm sorry, I can't talk to you right now.
I gotta go.
Hey, Ma.
Oh, hey, Mason. How are you?
I'm, uh, good.
I saw you the other day.
You did?
Yeah, you were on your skateboard.
Oh. Yeah.
I'll see you later.
Beth.
You are finally at an event where there are appropriate suitors.
And you're standing in the corner looking like a hired photographer.
Do you want me to do a striptease, Mother? I want you to mingle.
There are men here with real potential.
I don't want to be part of some power couple.
I need someone who's fun and spontaneous and romantic.
Someone like me.
Oh, Beth.
Carter!
May I introduce my daughter, Beth?
Hey, Uncle Robert. Hey, Mace. How you doing, kid?
Um, can I do something?
Yeah, go ahead, shoot.
How do I get a girl to have sex with me?
I mean, what? Is there a trick or... Mason, listen to me. Deep down, all
are whores.
If you can treat a woman like the whore that she is, she's going to appreciate
it. She doesn't have to pretend around you. She can just be herself.
Huh.
Really? Mm -hmm. Now, listen.
One mistake you never want to make is to give a girl your heart.
Because she'll rip it out, she'll chop it up, wash it down with a Chardonnay.
Yeah, yeah.
That's a good one.
Hey.
We'll get him, Tiger.
Yeah.
I was just telling Hollis we really should have Poppy over for a
play date. Oh, I know. She and Chloe are adorable together.
Well, I'll have Teresa give Inez a call and set something up.
Holly's just put in a home theater with a row of seats for Chloe and her friends
so they can watch cartoons.
Hope,
everybody,
wait.
I just want to remind everybody why we're here.
I've known George Greeley for 41 short years.
Could that be right?
Don't look that old.
And I've worked with him for 33 long years.
George's days as publisher of The Sun are over, but I suspect the best days of
his life have just begun.
So let's raise our glass and give a toast in honor of the most talented, the
most loyal, the most dedicated, the most cranky man I've ever known.
Here's to you, George.
Good luck.
Who else would like to say a few words?
I would.
We all know my dad's a great publisher.
But what you may not know is what an amazing father he is to his children.
It's true, Dad.
You are.
For instance, yesterday morning I woke up in this gay guy's hotel room.
Just one of those things happens to the best of us.
I guess the night before I'd gone through $2 ,000 of his best Colombian
So he was pissed off and horny.
And if I didn't pay him back, he was going to take my virginity.
But my dad came to the rescue.
He offered me the money so I could pay off this guy.
And that's the kind of dad George really is.
So I want to thank you, Pop, from the bottom of my bottom.
You're the best.
Hear, hear.
George.
Nice speech.
You turned this wake into a circus.
It's my specialty.
I guess you weren't listening to me today.
You brought me into this world, Pop.
You want to get rid of me, you're going to have to take me out yourself.
I just might do that.
Oliver? Please, God, tell me you're not gay.
Hey, Mason.
So, want to come up to my room?
Why?
So we can have sex.
I know you're just a whore deep down.
You don't have to pretend with me.
Mother!
Good party?
Bunch of death.
I'm Beth.
I'm Tom.
I like your car, Tom.
I like your camera, Beth.
Are you a photographer?
I'm an artist.
I'd love to see your stuff sometime.
How about right now?
Hey, Lily.
I can't do this anymore.
I can't keep opening up to you when you're always holding back from me.
I mean, after all this, you trust my mother, but you don't trust me.
I don't trust your mother.
I just needed her help.
For what?
I like you.
I've never felt like this about someone.
But if you're just gonna be mysterious and vague about everything, then...
I feel lonely enough as it is.
My mother's not dead.
She was here at the party tonight.
And I saw her.
For the first time in my life, I saw her.
I had all these questions I wanted to ask her.
What?
I don't want to keep anything from you, Lily.
I want to tell you everything.
Look on your face when I walked
in. That was priceless.
You and Catherine seem like the happy couple. You two really worked it all
I can tell.
How can you come here?
I was invited.
Don't you know? Robert gave me my job back.
He's just using you to get at me.
Really?
I'm being used.
Thanks for looking out for me.
It's nice to know you.
Why are you acting like this?
What did I do to you?
What did you ever do to me? Where do I begin?
Everything that is bad in my life is there because of you. You're evil.
You deserve whatever it is you get.
Have you come to bed?
What do you care?
I care.
Mom? Dad?
Um, can Henry spend the night?
His brother was supposed to pick him up, but he never showed.
I'll make a guess, right?
classical torture ruined my mind like a snake in the
orchard I did go from wanting to be someone now
I'm city streets of wondrous torrenting all these
foes is now no longer boyish made me a man
but who cares Would that have been you
Then watch my
Yeah, thank you.
So did you meet Paige?
Yeah, but I don't think she's her.
No, you don't?
I'm not even sure I have the right information.
I'm probably just gonna let it go.
No, Henry, I'm so sorry.
I could be a mother to you, Henry.
kids.
