three days have passed since peggy's

murder and keel is visiting the local

police station where he meets with

detective superintendent wilson

wilson explains to keel that progress on

the case is slow

he believes ms steven's murder to have

been a professional killing something

very rare in britain

peggy must have stumbled across

something that made her a target

keel returns to his consulting rooms in

chelsea where dr treading tells him that

he has an idea why peggy was murdered

while keel was out treading had opened

the mysterious package that had been

delivered earlier and found it to

contain half a pound of raw heroin worth

a small fortune

there was no address on the package only

my name spelt wrongly says treading

now i remember i had a namesake at dr

treading spelt this way with an a he was

struck off some scandal with one of his

women patients

keel locates this other doctor treading

in the telephone directory he lives at

14 morton terrace bayswater keel

undertakes to visit the discredited

practitioner and makes his way to the

man's home

in the meantime treading will report the

discovery of the heroine to the police

later keel arrives at dr treading's

residence in bayswater

suddenly he finds the front door flung

open in front of him by a somewhat

agitated man

keel asks if dr treading is available

the man suggests that treading can be

found inside

keel enters he looks back and the

mysterious man has disappeared

keel looks around inside treading's home

and enters the bedroom

the sight before him causes him to stop

in his tracks the body of a well-dressed

man lays sprawled across the bed

two cases are packed nearby

clearly treading had been readying

himself to leave

keel ascertains that the man is dead and

leaves the bedroom closing the door

behind him

the doorbell rings and keel opens

treading's front door

a young woman stands before him

her name is stella

keel quickly realizes she is a heroin

addict

dreading had been her pusher

he shows her the body to get a positive

identification and questions her

thinking she may be able to lead him to

the people behind peggy's murder

she claims to know nothing and makes a

dash for the door

keel is unable to prevent her escape

after informing the police of treading's

death keel returns to the surgery

once there he finds an unexpected

visitor waiting for him it is the man

keel had seen all too briefly at

bayswater

he explains he cannot reveal his name

and that he gained entry through a

window and has awaited kiel's return

he thinks he can be of some assistance

to the doctor

i think you could be of some assistance

to the police exclaims keel reaching for

the telephone

the intruder suggests that before keel

calls the police he should listen to

what he has to say

the doctor relents

keel listens as the other man proposes

that to bring peggy's killer to justice

keel must convince the racketeers that

he wants to push drugs

a gang member will visit the surgery at

4 30 the following afternoon

keel will be handed a package that he

must pass along when instructed keel

feels nervous about the plan but agrees

to go along with it as it represents his

only hope of tracking down the murderer

he wonders how they will keep in contact

ha you won't be able to lose me says the

mysterious intruder i can see myself out

good night

the following day keel waits nervously

for his visitor

treading wants to discuss the engagement

of a new receptionist but keel realizing

he must be alone suggests deferring the

discussion until later and treading

finally leaves

within moments of treading's departure

johnson arrives with stella the woman

keel had met in bayswater

johnson hands over a package as arranged

he then demands that keel gives stella a

heroin fix but keel insists he must

examine her first

meanwhile having infiltrated the gang

kiel's uninvited guest who the gang

refer to as steed is at their hideout

charlie criticizes steed's choice of

keel as a pusher

steed points out that having a seemingly

above-board gp on their books is worth

the risk

besides if keel proves unreliable

johnson and stella can shop him and the

big man can have him eliminated

at the surgery keel has examined stella

and writes her a prescription

johnson is not happy with this decision

and suggests that she should be given

heroin

keel counters that with the high market

value of the drug it would be foolish to

waste some of it when a legal

prescription will help the girl

johnson and stella leave the surgery

somewhat aggrieved

meanwhile at the gang's flat steve puts

charlie in his place

treading said he hadn't received the

stuff and he hadn't accused his steed he

was killed because you told spicer to

get him before you knew the facts i got

there too late to save him if i'd have

been able to stop spicer it would have

saved the rest of us a lot of trouble

charlie reluctantly agrees that keel

must replace treading as their contact

however as steed leaves charlie orders

spicer to follow him to report his

movements

later steed visits keel at the surgery

to advising that he will receive a

second visit from johnson when he does

keel should tell him that he has decided

to back out

this will make keel a marked man and

steed says the man sent to kill him will

be peggy's murderer

keel agrees to go along with the plan

from a call box spicer telephones

charlie he tells him that steed has been

visiting dr keel and that he will

continue tailing him

later that day johnson arrives at the

surgery keel plays along with the plan

although he is unsure of his secret of

anonymous contact

keel pushes his doubts to the back of

his mind and refuses to cooperate with

johnson

he wants out and might find it difficult

to keep his mouth shut johnson threatens

keel but keel uses an unexpected

interruption from his medical partner dr

treading to send johnson away

empty-handed

a little later keel receives a call from

steed who is telephoning from the gang's

flat now listen carefully i haven't got

much time whispers steed

they want to get you i told them i can

persuade you to reenact what happened to

your fiance i explained to them that you

would think you were following up the

trail that would lead to her killer keel

is to be outside vincennes the jewelers

in half an hour at a quarter past

midnight a car will pull up and keel

must allow himself to be dragged inside

it keel has many questions but the line

goes dead as steed ends the call

steve turns directly to the gang who

have been listening in

everybody clear he asks them

we're dropping him at the docks in tones

charlie

we'll pick him up at 12 15 says steed by

1 15 dr kiel will be floating out on the

tide

keel makes his way to vincennes as

arranged a car pulls up just as he had

been told it would spicer gets out a

grim expression on his face

as the murderer approaches keel catches

a glimpse of two men in the shadows

their guns pointed towards him

one looks suspiciously like his

mysterious collaborator

spicer grabs the doctor roughly and

bundles him inside the car before spicer

can do anything else keel hears a shot

fired outside in the street

the gang member in the shadows with

steed lies dead

in the ensuing confusion spicer beats a

hasty retreat

keel emerges from the car to find

detective sergeant rogers waiting for

him the police have received an

anonymous tip-off and have been tailing

him

roger's superior detective

superintendent wilson joins them and

suggests that keele is a lucky man the

shot that killed the other gunman was

probably meant for him

keel is sure he was to have been shot

down but that his shady friend

intervened shooting first and then

disappearing into the night

keel elects to keep this theory from the

police and for the sake of appearances

agrees with wilson's summation

next time you may not be so lucky

suggest wilson may i suggest you stick

to medicine sir and leave police work to

us

that's very good advice superintendent

replies keel but the work isn't quite

finished yet is it

he still doesn't know the identity of

his guardian angel and wonders if he

will see the man again

and spicer and the big man are still at

large

keel wants to see them brought to book
