Rumors also circulated that England was
planning to support European Protestants

against the Catholics.

Queen Elizabeth had forbidden Mass and
the raising of the Eucharist in churches

throughout her kingdom.

Everywhere, relics and other Catholic
symbols had been removed.

English Catholics now had to celebrate
Mass in strict secrecy.
