could get it done.

And then it started.

Well, I got to the door just in time to
see him pull a gun out of Frankie's

hand. You mean that Bob pulled a gun on
the other man?

Well, I didn't exactly see him pull it
out, but I saw the other guy pull it out

of Baum's hand.

What hand did he hit Baum with?

Well, the right hand.

Yeah, I'm sure it was the right hand.

Pow! His right hand.

Did you see him pull the gun on Baum?

Well, he had it in his hand, didn't he?

Did you see him pull the gun out of his
pocket?

I guess I didn't.

Look, are you sure that it was in his
right hand? Oh, I'm sure.

I'll never forget the sight of him
standing there, looking at us with that

Somebody just claimed the body of your
sister in a place called Warm Springs,

California, wherever that is. I've been
through there, driving up to Oregon.

It's a small town about 200 miles north
of here. A lovely old inn and some very

interesting antique shops.

That's wonderful.

We can dine, enjoy the view, buy some
antiques, and just possibly find out

something about the late Frankie Baum.

Well, Haynes said that Baum had a permit
to carry a gun. A .38 was registered to

him, but it wasn't on his person or in
his hotel room.

Nor was it in Ed's apartment.

At least that backs up the witness who
said that Baum pulled a gun on Mr. X.

The question is whether our Mr. X
disposed of it or still has it in his

possession. Do you think you're going to
find him in Warm Springs?

I don't know.

There's a good possibility he's from
there.

Why do you say that?

Well, two things the witnesses heard him
say.

One was, why don't you do the right
thing for once in your life? The other

something about, you always were.

Which indicates that the man knew him
rather well, and for a long period of

time. Bob was a loner in San Francisco.

Anybody that knew him well enough or
long enough to talk to him like that

well have been from his hometown.

You have any idea what the guy meant
