a lot of money let's have the bad news i

speak as a friend mr bonnell and a pig's

eye

you do me great injustice because you do

not understand me

with correct partner a man with

influence in certain quarters

it may do you much good in the future

i've got a partner victim and ask you

in persons rule of the house oh but he's

been detained you certainly don't think

i'd come without his permission

yes miss murdoch i do

you see people in my business have to

know who comes and goes around a place

like this

i know doris poole

i hated to lie but i'm i'm only

following the captain's suggestion he

said there'd be no difficulty

he was wrong

who is it

mr bonnell

i must speak with you at once did you

be out in a minute very well one minute

and don't listen to the keyhole

tell the captain he'll have to come

after his letter and bring his passport

[Music]

what are you doing in shanghai seeing

the sights

you're not the sword hangs around a

place like this well it's one of the

sights isn't it and i was asked to pick

up a letter so you say

miss murdock if i were you i wouldn't

run around shanghai at night alone

it isn't the safest city in the world

these days thank you mr panel good night

the way you've been staring at me have

we met before yes

we almost got married

that was a long long time ago

and why didn't we

i didn't get the breaks

she has two children now and a husband

in politics

maybe you're lucky

good night

mr bonnell you have not sold about dixie

no

i am very happy for a moment when i saw

mr saeedo leaving how did you know what

he was talking about there are very few

secrets in in shanghai i'm finding that

out

now i'm an escue of slipping and the

japs would like to squeeze me out of the

picture please do not sell to mr saeedo

until my client has opportunity to meet

his price

okay

if you seek a letter

the young lady took it most

surreptitiously and she's going to give

it back

i'll see you later

hello roy

good crowd tonight yeah

joe give mr ramsey a drink on the house

sorry i have to get along oh roy this is

official business the police have been

asked to locate a girl doris poole you

know i saw a little while ago last night

too point her out to me she left about

20 minutes ago what do you know about

her she pays her bills that's all always

mr carson every place i've been frisco

chicago new york there's always a mr

caution that won't talk

because it might degrade or

incriminate

like crimson you may have been a smart

cop in frisco but you're just a green

horn out here i don't try to make a

reputation for yourself by knocking me

over now roy what are you getting heated

about well i know what you're after i

saw you take that snapshot of me at the

races yeah they say you don't like to

have your picture taken didn't do any

good at fucha road did it

they've known me at headquarters for

years but do they know you're in

washington

if they do there'll be an answer on the

clipper what are you driving it when a

man wears gloves all the time

maybe he's hiding something maybe it's

fingerprints that means a record

you better keep away from handshakes the

alcohol is much better at wang chi house

thanks mr carson hello roy my little

partner

we got good business tonight yes uh i

just had a session with saeedo he and

his mom want to buy us out that japanese

sandbag man i wouldn't tell him the

right time why did we stand take over

will you vic i'll be back in about an

hour what do you go now she doesn't know

i've got her number

i'll take that letter

you should know better this doesn't

belong to you how did you get in here

the desk clerk is a friend of mine i

told him i forgot my hat and asked the

bar the pass key he's very sympathetic

that's a good thing to know

didn't your mother ever tell you this

was called stealing

it could be called business strategy

[Music]

i'm listening

you'll keep a confidence i can try

i work for a living

buying agent for a very rich man in

chicago who should be nameless for the

moment

he collects rare jade that's why i'm in

china

the war and unsettled conditions he

thought they'd help him pick up some

bargains

what's all this got to do with the

letter larson has a quarter of a million

in jade for sale a fine collection some

ex-warlord wants to dispose of

that isn't my affair

larson is somewhat of an adventurer

lives by his wits i had the tip in hong

kong that he was coming here to find a

buyer contact with one shanghai dealer

was to be made through the bar dixie but

why all the secrecy

ever hear of japanese hijackers

i took the letter meant for larson

because i want to contact him and make

an offer before any j dealer can you

always think one up on the spur of the

moment like that

well if you don't want to believe me

solaire

oh him he's the best jade man in town

but why did you use doris poole's name

before

she's in the same game i am and trying

to get what larson has too

must have gotten the tip from the same

party in hong kong

i thought if there was any trouble over

my swiping the letter she could handle

the headache of explaining you knew me

would you like a drink let's cut some

water

now you know the worst about me

it's a pretty big order for a girl

[Music]

i was thinking that too

you know playing the lone wolf has had

its advantages in the past but

i'm a stranger here mm-hmm

what am i supposed to say to that

you might help i might

you're very kind if we put it on a

business basis

what's your proposition

i'd like to substitute my name and

address in that letter to captain larson

mm-hmm he comes here and you close for

the jade how do i come off

ten thousand one third of my commission

not interested

surely you don't want half i know a

little bit about these deals and jaden

you're a sucker if you're taking less

than 50 for you're in

and i'm sure you're no sucker

i'll be very happy with 20. oh you're

way off the beam in that case i will

keep you up

i don't see that larson gets this first

schedule thanks for the drink

mr burnell

it's a deal

i'll expect half one account in the

morning

so

larson is in town

you ought to be calling for this any

minute now go get it

i'll get in touch with you when i hear

from you

didn't bother i don't know

this is to seal the bargain

[Music]

i paid the bill for those i bought them

myself

honest

i always say that

am i cutting in on anybody

can't be the house dick they don't have

them in china

it is most urgent that you come with me

how did you get here you indicate a

destination at time of departure oh what

is it mr iminiscu your honorable partner

has been arrested by the special service

section japanese secret police why what

for

do they ever tell

since you cannot sell your cafe without

mr aminsky's consent i came to inform

you of his trouble thanks oh there will

be a small charge let's go

where are you going get my partner out

of the clink

it is serious to be arrested by special

service

don't i know

go find my lawyer and get him over to

jeff field road on the run you

commissioned me yes yes hurry up i

accept the job

mr bonnell

so nice i thought i recognize you as you

passed by oh hello see you later and may

i offer refreshments i'm sorry i haven't

got time please i decide to resume our

business discussion my friends show

interest in your proposition not now you

call me in the morning rainbow road chop

chop big come show

romania

profession please everybody know me send

guy everybody oh roy what are they

showing you around for they say i dipped

one of their boys in a fan tan set up it

is a cheap hold up and i won't play

the lawyer's on his way thanks

there is a fish behind this

they keep asking me what do i know about

a deal in jade do i ever hear of tien

long stuff that is stolen

what do you know about jade not a thing

but they promised her shots for the

charge if i tell them what are you

supposed to know

i buy a girl a drink she's english miss

poor they say she talks to me about old

jade did she no don't you see this fake

like the arrest they want cash maybe

you better let them have what they want

but believe me i do not know anything

this is a kidnap

you're in town now you gotta roll

with a punch you get out of here with

your skin on it we'll handle them later

no

i will not give them a penny

they cannot squeeze me please to come

inside i'll wait vic stall the wire gets

here

hey

this is most pleasant surprise

i am here visiting my friend inspector

of police

and he informs me of your visit

very quiet here

we can now discuss new matter that has

arrived

put it on eyes it cannot wait

this time you must not give me the stall

[Music]

please

you must not smoke here it is forbidden

send me a memo

thank you

mr saito speaks

if miss doris poole will not talk of

jade make her

of course silence and speed are

imperative

you must do that

sounded like traegers boys you know miss

pool

she is buyer of rare jade

last night you spoke with her two times

did she mention the jade of chienlong

but your conversation was most

confidential

what do you speak of

my stuffed bird collection

i wanted to show it to her she said no

both times

i know nothing of jade and i did not

swindle mr orani and you could not make

me pay ransom cash mr eminescu declines

to collaborate i shall join you in a few

moments

go easy with him

there's lawyers coming over

bosingly

unfortunate he met with automobile

accident ten minutes ago i just heard

from a friend

however his presence here is quite

unnecessary

mr reminescu i am confident can be

persuaded to enter into a more

cooperative mood

he has information of financial value

what about this jade pipe dream come on

out in the open

you're putting the squeeze on vic to get

his shares in the dixie and mine too

that does matter we can discuss another

time

do you know of mr m s you favor's

right hand or left hand

what excuse it is unimportant

i wouldn't if i were you

vic has friends

i have not heard of them in the new

order for east asia i'll get somebody

i'll stop you

american policemen

oh

i am most unhappy mr eminescu's heart

was not very strong

you don't get away with this you will

tell

who has ever believed mr bonnell only

his dice are honest

please will you now come inside

tell us maggie to take his hands off me

since

all right

where's the number one doorman

you japanese

who hired you

manager inside you ask him

do you have reservation name please

[Music]

roy who ever heard of a jab bartender

making a martini fit for human

consumption what's the idea surprise

anomaly it's

gestanko all right

come on inside

nice going trager

you worked the takeover for saeedo had

it planned for days

mr saeeda my partner telephones that you

sell to him his timing was wrong i

merely cut out the blitzkrieg invasion

yeah

i got the old bankroll huh

the sons of the rising sun

traeger you tell said if he doesn't kick

back with my money by morning i'll shove

those big teeth down his throat now take

your boogeyman and get out of here we do

not give the others here anymore you

wouldn't stop me would you

we'll settle this little mistake of

yours quietly unless you want a rough

house and that wouldn't look so good in

the papers

customers like mr alexandria come here

because it's safe

check it out

there must be something in the wind

they're all for sure themselves the jep

army is harder for revenue that's why

the whole city is wide open

roy

you didn't have everything in that safe

so i could move fast oh they gave me the

works while saeedo was trying to buy me

a drink and talk terms just an hour ago

the court will uphold you

that chance simonesque who's dead

his japs are outgunning for me

come to me

like you and rick did before nobody ever

bothers a crazy romanian who prefers to

live in the native city you will be safe

there roy good food good drink

good music thanks if it gets tight like

before maybe i will

they didn't find us there that time and

it was plenty hot

stay out i'm busy

i'm

looking for the person who has the post

the mail

i said i was busy

my name is larson

i said at the bar the mail's in here

is there something for me you have some

business to do roy don't forget what i

told you all right out

is there anything i wouldn't know

have to have your passport for

identification

sure

captain carl larson yes

give it to me passport

just in from tokyo huh yeah

i knew a captain larsen in hong kong

never been there

you don't take a very good picture

it's uh okay if i read this now help

yourself everybody else does

hold the flames

thanks for being so careful

good night

so

find time for gags

mr bonnell

you caused me great disappointment

you give me your word yet you sell to mr

saito you see that wall safe do you

think i did that

you have been invaded slightly

my apology for a false and unjust

suspicion thanks

all i want is one card to play against

mr saeedo just one uh may i suggest

going undercover it can't be arranged do

you prefer suite or single room

i'll hammer it my way

well they can't take this away from me

i can always make a slot machine talk

a mechanical talent is very helpful

[Music]

they made it hurt before they finished

it

you keep your mouth shut for yen we

don't want to mix in this

must be pretty big if they do that to

make her talk

what do you think for you in black

dragon society

so

i'm very glad you contacted me about

this jade

you say you know the people i work with

and you've dealt with them before

yes but i do not like mr bonnell's visit

to you

i do not trust him i think i can handle

him he's only after a chance to get some

easy money

perhaps however there's no sense of

antagonizing him

miss murdoch is most diplomatic you have

been well chosen for your task

now i must make departure

you have my instructions

permit me to warn you once again

mr bonnell is a most dangerous man

back so soon uh-huh

so you had a visitor mr saito took me

completely by surprise came to ask about

dora's pool that's your story sister

that door is made of tissue paper but

don't be upset because you heard me tell

him you and i aren't working together i

had to i haven't been around this town

for my health

you and doris poole wear identical

earrings

coincidence

uh identification you were working

together

you're not the first secret agent i ever

met but you're the first one ever sucked

me into a job you're fantastic i'm not

that kind of secret agent you're not

minnie mouse either

i'll wait

murder

i got your letter at the bar dixie

your name carl larson

careful these walls are made of tissue

paper

you have the proper identification young

roe

no a ching-hua sword handle of jade that

is correct

you're very cautious

can't be too careful

certain information is as valuable as

jade itself

where are you staying

peaking mansion house i'll contact you

when i'm ready

good night

i'll take the envelope

you wouldn't hold that on a partner

would you

oh my something tells me this is code of

course it is

about jade certainly you can't talk

openly about a quarter of a million in

this town i suppose you can decode this

yes the uh code books in my bedroom

[Music]

i got the cannon i thought you might

hurt yourself

where's the code book

what the devil do you take me for

there's no code book and there's no jade

in this deal that's nonsense just

because of codeless sweetheart

larson's fresh from tokyo he's never

been in hong kong

and you're tied to saeedo well if you

want to talk like that i can't stop you

saeedo stopped dora's pool and it wasn't

a pleasant way to die

maybe you sold her out

no

we were working together

roy i'm afraid now

saito knows

what

i have no right to tell you this but

there's so much at stake i've got to

trust you

i work for british intelligence

you don't say oh don't be a fool

the japs are pulling something in

washington we're sure of it but we don't

know the final move i heard that for

years

the answer may be in that letter

gone

and larson does work for tokyo he was to

deliver the code letter to an important

agent working around shanghai mr

saeedo

i don't think so

there's a captain mulhauser directs

japanese espionage in china

in the last war he raided with walter

nikolai and captain van poppin my job is

to find him and silence him

mulhauser

that's the name doris wrote when she was

dying that lot is my only lead to him i

can reach him through solaire

these numbers are worth plenty

and i need ready cash no you must

i don't know which side you're on and i

don't care solaire can name the price

or mr saeedo

he's got my bankroll and maybe this is

my ace to get it back

it's been nice knowing it

put that down

you're certainly well equipped with

artillery

throw that ladder down too

just like that you stay where you are

we could have had fun

roy please don't go to solaire this

thing is bigger than you think i'll buy

that letter i'm open to office right

don't go to solaire they'll kill you

let me worry about that

so

do not be alarmed conferences over peace

in the pacific have not broken down in

washington as previously reported

tonight the japanese cabinet instructed

envoys curacao nomara to continue the

talks this comes on top of premier

tojo's promise of war to purge asia of

american and british interests

is japan playing a waiting game of

planning a diplomatic surprise there's

more than meets the eye in the

resumption of the washington conference

after it broke down secretary of state

hull has stated that the united states

will not condone any further japanese

aggressions america will not desert

china will not permit the burma road to

be cut and will not allow the dutch east

indies

japan has been told in no uncertain

terms that the abcd interest will be

given every protection is my face red

joining the british at singapore there's

something new shanghai cop placed people

in town

well i just stopped in see if i can

locate some of your rare finger marks

i've got to hand it to you everything is

wiped clean must keep you busy

it's a habit

is this an official visit renson when i

got back to headquarters just now there

was a letter from washington right off

the clipper

they sent me a photo and some uh

fingerprints

know him

who is he

i admit the resemblance is poor years do

things to a face but one will get you

ten at carmichael and benella the same

man

take the breath

my fingerprints check not yet but i have

hopes they want you

or carmichael back in ohio you uh

or carmichael owe them 20 years you're

trying awful hard brother but you're all

wrong no i'm wrong i'll apologize i've

never seen ohio i'm swiss

want to see my passport if you're swiss

i'm a jab and you're not kidding

i wouldn't break in here again rimson i

promise not to bother you until i have

what i want on you a set of prints to

match these good hunting so long cover

tonight oh do me a favor will you yeah

sure

kawasaki

number one room

nice and clean

you like it

you really sure

very positive

nicely clean

you wanted anything else

just sleep

thank you

so

so

[Music]

go away beat it

you're no sing-song girl

not a bad hideout i had a time following

from your house now that you caught up

with me

you said you were open to office sure

let's have it

one thousand pounds for that letter

penny any stuff could you go as high as

five

i think so

that means it's worth ten maybe more

i have to see solaire

i'm going to try to reason with you roy

you're an american

swiss an american and you've got to

believe me

we're involved in this war threat so you

owe your country some consideration i

don't know anybody anything

so that's the angle to separate me from

the letter patriotism

that's a trick

but that's all right you work with

saeedo i told you i had to play it that

way they're my orders saito suspicious

pig's eye you're with him

how could i make you believe me

you can't

believe the guy like you once

nearly finished me

she looked like you

but i needed her she didn't come through

i was innocent it didn't make any

difference

she didn't put on a witness stand make

her lie

handed me 20 years

i made a break landed here

i was doing all right until you came

along

and my luck ended

now the japs have got my place said was

outgunning for me and the cops know who

i am

i'm sorry it was like that sorry what

for

i don't kid myself

man without a country

living on borrowed time always just one

jump ahead of the law

you're still an american

i'm not buying that line or any other

from you

i'll play the hand my way

get up

well i tried my best roy

next time i won't pull my punch

i'm looking for the girl in america

so you brought your pals

so

you should have waited for us to take it

away from him i wasn't sure you'd get my

message i thought i could handle it my

way

never again we'll pick him up in the

morning

[Music]

good morning mr bonnell you did not

sleep in your apartment last night you

don't miss much do you uh no sir and i

do not recommend foy toys lodging house

as a hideaway

the police sometimes look there police

mr ramsen has evidence that you belong

to the state of ohio for 20 years

i located you to tell you thanks

you are interested in two english

gentlemen who are they

there is a small fee

put it on my belt british agents

i gotta save myself some money

[Music]

what can i do for you today plenty

i understand you're anxious to acquire

specimens of channel under jade

you have the proper identification young

low

no

chingua saw the handle

that's right

the letter please you'll have the name

of price

there is more privacy in my office

[Music]

good morning mr

he bonnell the letter

please do not put hands in pockets and

unpleasantness will be avoided

i was expecting miss murdock of british

intelligence

but now you are most welcome

[Music]

naturally you are not foolish enough to

bring the letter

but i am most impatient today

where is it mr bonnell that'll cost you

money

very much my bankroll you hijacked

you forget so soon

mr eminescu your late partner

his unfortunate experience at jefffield

road you'll find it easier to pay off

the letter is valuable

you make grave error to speak that name

it reveals that you may know of most

secret matters i know when i hold the

best cards

perhaps

i shall call your hand in quieter place

you may then decide to give me that

letter you know my turns

there is a house where a tongue can be

loosened

i advise you to make no outcry in

passage

i tell you i saw the man coming to the

store a few minutes ago he must still be

here now where is he

oh

that's the man he's the one that took my

diamond broke last night at the bar

dixie i want him arrested are you quite

sure madam yes i'll make a formal

complaint who are these men we uh we

were just going for a ride

oh officer

he looks like the man but

now out here in the daylight i i may be

mistaken

oh i'm afraid i've made a terrible

blunder he isn't the man i meant

very good man oh

can you ever forgive me christ's going

bernal

branson wants to see you at headquarters

don't give me that you're not police

you're under arrest punitive from

justice you're british agents you're

coming with us

letter you have you don't tell me
