(This drama is fiction and people, places, organizations,)

(incidents, groups, and settings are not based on reality.)

Goodness.

Who are you?

I'm a producer at a broadcasting station.

I received a tip that children are dying at Hope Welfare Center.

Yoon Jae, stop.

Who are you?

Are you really a producer?

- Can I see your ID? - Sure.

Here.

I'm filming this in secret, so the staff doesn't know.

Do you guys live in this welfare center?

Why are you locked in here?

What did you do wrong?

You should ask one question at a time.

Oh, right. I'm sorry.

I was in a rush.

If I tell you everything,

what will you do?

I have to tell the world and save you guys from here.

Then save him first.

No way.

He got caught trying to run away.

If he doesn't get treatment soon, he's going to die.

Those jerks.

(Episode 9: Square One)

(There are people in here. Please save 11, 12, and 13.)

Number seven, An Tae Ho.

You betrayed us.

This is why you must die.

But you don't have to be in despair already.

I'm planning...

on giving you a chance.

This machine...

is set up to pull up the rope every hour.

After 24 hours, your feet will be dangling in the air.

But if someone comes to save you in that time,

you'll be able to leave here alive.

What do you think will happen?

Do you think people will come to save you?

Or will they turn a blind eye?

I really don't have much time left.

Now that I'm about to die,

I'm reminded of the moments we were together here.

Do you remember how we hid from Crazy Dog...

and had a water fight in the showers?

The reason why...

I was able to endure each day in that nightmare...

was because I spent that time with all of you.

We came up with a plan to escape together,

and we talked about the food we wanted to eat once we got out.

If I didn't make that decision,

we might still be living like that.

Even in our 40s and 50s,

we would rely on each other like back in the day.

I'm sorry...

that this is all I could do.

I'm really sorry.

An Tae Ho! No!

Wake up, An Tae Ho!

An Tae Ho!

Come on!

Sung Hoon.

An Tae Ho!

Sung Hoon.

- Sung Jun. - An Tae Ho!

Sung Jun.

An Tae Ho. Wake up.

Stop.

It's too late.

I can save him.

Wake up.

- Sung Jun. - I can do it.

- Darn it! - Stop!

An Tae Ho chose this himself.

An Tae Ho chose...

to punish himself.

So stop.

Let him go.

(Caller ID Restricted)

("Save Me" Big event is now over!)

Sung Jun.

Ryu Sung Jun!

Sung Jun!

We finally found you.

Get him.

It would've been nice if you had died the last time we caught you.

What do you think you're doing?

If you hurt my brother, I will kill you.

I will kill you!

If you wanted to save your brother,

you shouldn't have killed my daughter.

You should feel the pain of seeing your family die too.

Moon Kang!

Go.

- Round them up! - What is this?

Hurry up!

- Hands in the air! - Freeze!

- Don't move! - Hands in the air!

- Freeze! - What?

- Get them. - Go!

- Darn it! - Freeze!

- Hey! - Stop!

(Detective)

(Violent Crimes Team 4)

- Seok Gu, what happened? - You're here.

Is Detective Ryu okay?

Is this your girlfriend?

You've got to be joking.

The situation is not good.

He was arrested at the scene where An Tae Ho's body was found.

Does the police suspect Detective Ryu in Manager An's case too?

Detective Ryu went there to save Manager An.

I can attest to that.

But then the fact that you hid him all this time would be revealed.

- Would that be okay? - That doesn't matter. I'll testify.

No. I don't think Sung Jun would want that.

Then what about Judge Ryu? He must've gone there too.

Didn't you meet him there?

We did meet him, but the thing is...

That jerk must be the culprit.

Why the big sigh?

Detective Kang. How is my brother?

He almost died because of Mr. Baek and his men.

My brother is okay, right?

What a touching display of brotherly love.

You're this worried about your brother,

but your brother is...

- What does that mean? - Ryu Sung Jun.

How do you think we knew...

that you were at Hope Welfare Center?

(Statement)

Can you tell us why you reported it?

Is there any other reason for wanting to know the truth?

What truth do you mean?

Why a serial murder happened...

and who the culprit is. That's what I mean.

Step outside.

Don't let anyone in until I call you.

Yes, sir.

Good going.

You should've run for it before the cops got there.

What do you think you're doing, getting dragged in here like this?

You must not know me very well, Chief.

I didn't come in here because I didn't know how to run.

Then what?

Do you mean you came in here on purpose?

Have you lost your mind?

Don't you know where we are?

Don't do anything stupid.

Chief.

Just because I bowed to you, do you think you're above me?

The flowers on your shoulder mean nothing to me.

You just have to do as I say from now on.

Do you understand?

(Doing our best, Muyeong Police)

Judge Ryu.

Let's talk.

Later.

I'd rather we talk now.

I was told you reported Detective Ryu.

Why?

Did you have to go and do that?

Why should I explain that to you?

Oh. I get it.

It was my wishful thinking.

I thought we were a team.

If you don't want to explain, don't.

But I need to speak my mind.

Did you ever stop to think how Detective Ryu must feel?

How it must feel to be betrayed by the brother he trusted?

You'd never get it.

Because all you care about are law and principles.

(Muyeong Police, Doing our best for the safety of our residents)

Are you here about Sung Jun?

I'll try to...

You said you'd handle it.

Is this you handling it?

I had no choice this time.

You had no choice?

I trusted you and spoke to the media, the whole nation.

And... And what?

You should calm down.

Let's hear what Sung Hoon has to say.

Okay, then. Speak up.

What could you not handle...

that got Sung Jun ended up in a cell?

If I hadn't called the police, both Sung Jun and I...

would've died at Baek Moon Kang's hand.

Who is Baek Moon Kang?

Do you not know, Mother?

How would I know someone like that?

Baek Moon Kang was the head of security...

at Hope Welfare Center.

His daughter is the victim of the Joker Murder.

Baek Moon Kang believes Sung Jun killed his daughter.

I think he followed me to get to Sung Jun.

By the time I'd noticed, it was too late.

The police station...

is the safest place?

Okay. You're not entirely wrong...

But I was wrong.

Sung Jun's locked up with Baek Moon Kang.

In the same station.

What?

You asked to see me?

Yes. What did Yoon Jae say?

Who is "Yoon Jae"?

Did I say "Yoon Jae"?

I was thinking of something else and my tongue slipped.

Did Sung Jun confess?

No. As we thought, he denied everything.

Okay. Then pretend to investigate him,

and when you get the chance, take him to Baek Moon Kang.

Do you know what I mean?

Yes, sir.

What's important is what happens next.

Once Baek Moon Kang takes care of Sung Jun,

you have to take out...

Baek Moon Kang.

Chief. Are you telling me...

to murder someone?

Why are you so surprised?

It won't be your first time.

Hello, it's me.

It's done.

Mr. Baek's people took Sung Jun.

Live rounds were fired,

so they won't think we lost him on purpose.

I'll report Sung Jun killed Jung Man Chun's wife and son...

No. There isn't a problem.

Yes, sir.

Shoot.

Hush. Be quiet.

Be quiet!

Even if I take it down to negligent manslaughter...

and you end up with a criminal record with no connections,

do you think you can recover?

To the rich and powerful, a mistake is a memory to look back on.

To those with nothing, a mistake equals a crash.

It will end your life.

Baek Moon Kang.

You dare threaten me?

(Muyeong Community Children's Center)

- This isn't it. - It's not it!

Ms. Jo!

Don't hurt yourself.

I wonder if he ate.

Who?

A uniform? Did you go to school?

You told me to sit the exam, so I did.

All the writing sounded foreign to me.

You literally just sat through it.

Good for you, though.

The detective guy got caught?

Yes.

When will the judge come by?

He has no reason to anymore.

What? You can't say that.

You called him my mentor.

Call him over now. I have more exams tomorrow.

A mentor's not a private tutor that helps you cram the day before.

What's his number?

No, I should just go and see him.

He works at Muyeong Local Court, right?

(Muyeong Local Court)

It's close by.

Yu Na.

Why are you so interested in Judge Ryu?

It's fun.

He looks like he has a lot of secrets.

Sung Hoon.

Sung Jun...

is your one and only brother.

Can you...

get him out?

About my chief...

What's the real reason why he wants me to kill Ryu Sung Jun?

You're the only one who will suffer if you stay loyal.

Once the hunt is over, the hunting dog will be killed.

If you tell me what Chief Yeom's secret is,

I'll make sure to save you without letting him know.

Detective Kang.

Did my brother's interrogation end well?

Did he get home safe?

What is this?

It's a video I just found.

The person who really killed Jung Man Chun is in here.

(Ad Balloon Video)

(Ad Balloon Video)

Stop.

Zoom in.

That's...

Dad!

When you go to the afterlife, your wife and kid...

- will be waiting for you. - No...

Where's Baek Moon Kang right now?

Detective Kang took him to ask him some more questions.

Captain Oh, we're in trouble.

Detective Kang was attacked by Baek Moon Kang.

What? What do you mean he was attacked?

Well... It was in the bathroom...

Darn it. Hurry up.

Wait.

Where's Sung Jun?

He's in the interrogation room...

Sung Jun!

- Detective Ryu! - Detective Ryu!

- Stop it! - Sung Jun, stop!

Detective Ryu!

Sung Jun!

Sung Jun! Stop!

Sung Jun!

Wait.

Sung Jun. Wait.

Don't worry about things here.

Just get some rest for a few days.

Oh, by the way.

That evidence...

Your brother brought it in.

He found it within a few hours of turning you in.

Well, I'm just letting you know.

(Muyeong Police, Doing our best for the safety of our residents)

(Muyeong Local Court)

I'm home.

Do you want to eat?

Sit if you're going to eat.

Do you not want any? If not, I'll eat it by myself.

Wait. I'll eat.

By the way,

how did you find it?

Captain Oh told me.

The timing was perfect, wasn't it?

You got lucky.

So what if I'm lucky?

You almost died because of me.

I dragged you into this mess just so I could live,

and you ended up getting hurt by that piece of trash, Baek Moon Kang.

This will never happen again.

I will never drag you into my mess again.

So you can stop caring about my affairs too.

It's too late for that.

Tae Ho is dead?

My goodness. How?

The investigation is still ongoing, so I don't know the details either.

Actually, Director, the reason I called today is...

Would you happen to know anyone...

who has information on Hope Welfare Center?

I'm not sure, but I'll look around.

Yes, I'd appreciate it.

Revenge begot revenge.

Yes. All of this...

started at Hope Welfare Center.

Did you remember anything else when you were there this time?

It's all a mess.

I'm not sure.

Could it be you're instinctively trying not to remember?

As I saw Manager An's last moments,

I somehow thought that might be the case.

Hope Welfare Center...

What on earth happened there...

that it left this kind of trauma on you?

And the dozens of kids who were there...

How do you think they're doing now?

I'll keep looking for the kids who were there.

I hope you feel better too.

Can I see your phone?

Press that if you're in an emergency.

What's this?

If you're curious, try pressing it.

(Emergency alert)

It's an emergency call service.

(Emergency alert)

I will now give you...

an interim investigative report of the Joker Murders.

First, the suspect, Detective Ryu Sung Jun of this police station,

has been cleared of all charges.

We sincerely apologize to Detective Ryu and his family,

as well as the public, for causing confusion.

(Jung Man Chun's Family's Murder Case Investigation Update)

The culprit of the Jung Man Chun Family Murder Case is...

the father of the Joker Murder victim, Mr. Baek Moon Kang.

(Jung and Baek's relationship)

We have arrested Baek Moon Kang for the murder of Jung Man Chun...

by pushing him off of the hospital roof on April 22,

and also for the murders of his wife and son...

who were staying in a motel.

Next, I will describe Baek Moon Kang's crime methods.

The suspect, Baek Moon Kang,

killed Jung Man Chun's wife and son at the motel,

then went to the hospital to kill Jung Man Chun.

The button found at the scene, which belonged to...

Detective Ryu Sung Jun,

was confirmed to have been taken by the suspect's subordinate.

(Security footage from outside the motel)

Also, he seriously injured a police officer who was watching him,

making him lose consciousness.

And he testified that...

he used the fact that Ryu had been there and attempted to frame him.

(The assailant, Baek)

(Mother)

Yes, Mother.

Son. You did well.

There's no need for that.

I only did what I had to do.

He will be buried at an arboretum near the unwed mothers' shelter.

I went there and saw the place too.

The view is great, so I'm sure Manager An will like it.

I'll leave it to the two of you.

I wish I could help, but I'm not well enough.

Are you ill?

No, I just saw the news that the culprit had been caught.

I felt so relieved and had a lot to drink for a few days.

My stomach feels terrible.

Actually, I always woke up around 3am every night...

because of some stomach issues.

But today,

I was rolling on the floor. Gosh, I feel like I almost died.

Should I get you some medicine?

It's fine. I'm sure it'll get better with time.

What's this about the culprit being caught?

Watch the news, will you?

They say Detective Ryu Sung Jun has been caught.

I'm only saying this now,

but I met the culprit when he was young.

Who knew that it would turn out to be Ryu Sung Jun?

Why?

Gosh, why are you all looking at me like that?

You fool.

You're the one who doesn't watch the news, not me.

My gosh.

Here.

("Joker Murder Investigation Back to Square One")

(The Rooftop Hero has been cleared of all charges.)

So the killer...

They still haven't caught the killer?

Goodness.

Judge Ryu.

What are you doing out here?

I came here to offer my condolences. I was just about to leave.

Bye.

I'm sorry about the other day.

I got the wrong idea.

I have a short fuse.

- I'm sorry. - You don't need to apologize.

It was my fault that you got the wrong idea.

Eun Ki, you're here.

I'm late, aren't I? Is everyone here?

Yes, they're at the cafeteria.

You know Judge Ryu, right?

Of course, I do.

I didn't expect to run into you here, Judge Ryu.

Right, hello.

In Seong, what happened to your lips?

Oh, this?

It's cracked, probably because I'm tired.

- I'll get going, then. - Okay.

Hello, Director.

That nun knows about Hope Welfare Center?

Okay, I'll contact her and meet her in person.

Thank you, Director.

What is this?

Sung Jun, come over here for a moment!

What is it?

(Detective Kang Chang Wook)

(Call Log, Baek Moon Kang)

Mr. Baek and Detective Kang never called each other.

Does it mean Detective Kang wasn't the one who leaked my info?

Here's Detective Kang's call log.

Thanks.

(Call Log)

(Call Log)

(Calling)

Hello?

(In Seong's Place)

Don't mind us.

When Chief Yeom and Chang Wook suspected you,

I should've put my foot down and stopped them.

I'm sorry, Sung Jun.

Just blame my incompetence.

Both you and Chang Wook...

Chang Wook, that fool...

Captain.

- What do you know about Chief Yeom? - Chief Yeom?

All he cares about is moving up the ranks.

Don't even get me started.

His palm lines are gone from all the fawning and begging.

So he struggled to get to where he is now.

Is that why he has a lot to hide?

What do you mean?

The person Mr. Baek has been talking to most frequently these days...

is Chief Yeom.

They spoke very often on the phone. They can't just be acquaintances.

They must be really close.

What is it...

that Chief Yeom is hiding?

Hey!

Where is Chief Yeom? Tell him to come out!

- Captain, please. - Darn it!

Hey, Chief Yeom! Darn you...

Hey, where is Chief Yeom?

Where is he? Gosh.

What's with Captain Oh?

He said he had to speak with you in person, sir.

- Is that Chief Yeom? - Yes.

Oh!

Chief... Chief, my foot.

If you're a chief,

I am the president of this country, you jerk!

Have you completely lost your mind?

On top of drinking while on duty,

you dare to yell at your boss in a drunken frenzy!

Captain Oh!

I'm giving you a zero on your performance review!

Hey.

I don't care whether I get a zero or below zero.

I'm embarrassed that a jerk like you is evaluating me.

I don't want it!

- You little... How dare you! - Hey!

- Stop. Hey! - How could you...

- How could you do such a thing? - Hey, get him off me!

- Why do you even live? - Hey!

- Captain, that's enough. - You punk!

- You're despicable! - Goodness.

How...

You call yourself a chief?

- Gosh. - How...

How could you...

That idiot.

(Recents)

(Mr. Baek, Min Ho, Mr. Baek)

(Min Ho's babysitter, Detective Kang Chang Wook, Mr. Baek)

Mr. Baek...

(Messages)

(Detective Kang Chang Wook: Yes, sir.)

(My daughter Hye Jin, Video)

(April 19)

April 19?

But Yeom Hye Jin died on April 15.

Open it.

(My daughter Hye Jin, Video)

What is this?

Why are you doing this to me?

Why am I doing this?

Ask your father, Chief Yeom Ki Nam.

I don't know what my father did to you,

but I apologize on his behalf.

Please forgive him.

My son is waiting for me at home.

Please don't kill me.

Chief Yeom Ki Nam, are you watching this?

Your daughter is begging me not to kill her.

Chief Yeom.

Open your eyes wide and watch.

Your poor daughter has to die because of you.

(Our priority is to protect child actors...)

(and animals and the dangerous scenes...)

(were not shot with real children or animals...)

(but with doubles and dummies.)

(Blind)

If they're all connected to Hope Welfare Center,

the killer's next target will be...

You said your name was Jung Yoon Jae before you were adopted.

I think that memory is false.

If it's not Jung Yoon Jae, who could it be?

Someone who resents you enough...

to want to kill your daughter.

The suspect in Kang Ha Na's murder?

So far, all the victims were their family members.

- My daughter, Eun Ki... - Eun Ki!

Sung Hoon. Who are you, really?
