One time, though…

In a play called There with the Chaimu Theater Company.

It was such a fun show!

This was a play I did with Seong-min.

I start off coming on stage, mopping the floor.

Then another actor comes in and starts the dialogue.

So, I'm there, mopping away, waiting for him to come in with the first line.

- But then the next line… - Oh, you didn't remember?

But then...

Did I mess up? Did I miss my line?

Or is it his turn?

- I'm lost, still thinking… - Oh gosh, haha.

Then suddenly! We both forgot the next line.

So, I just keep wiping the floor...

[Next actor senses trouble] Another actor who was supposed to come on next

[Steps in early] comes in, skipping around 10 minutes of the play.

He must’ve thought, "Oh, they’re really struggling," so he came in.

And he threw out a line.

Then suddenly, everything came back to us!

[The line we desperately needed comes back]

It felt like we stood there in silence for about 10 minutes.

[But actually] It was only around 1 minute and 30 seconds.

[A painfully quiet moment of tension] In silence...

This is intense!

- Wow, that really happened! - Wow!

I just remembered, I've got a bit of a trauma with props.

- Why? What happened? - When I was a student

you know, in school performances props can be pretty basic.

So, I had to fire a gun at the end.

But it wasn’t working.

Oh, no.

And it was like

the villain was supposed to fire at the end.

But no matter how much I pressed it wouldn’t shoot.

We both realized it was jammed.

My parents were in the audience, watching.

So I didn’t know what to do, so I just said

“Bang!”

[Best possible sound effect]

You had to! Sometimes you just have to do it.

But it wasn’t that kind of play.

[Serious thriller] It was supposed to be intense.

“Die!”

[No bang from the gun, just staring]

[Desperation] Bang!

[Audience bursts into laughter]

I could see my parents bowing their heads.

After I “killed” him, I’m standing there saying

“Now everything went as planned,” but my parents…

[Bowing their heads…] Were just sitting there, heads down.

That memory is still so vivid.

Back then, having a real blank go off on stage was

so unique and sensational! Actually firing blanks!

Seong-ryong, have you ever made mistakes?

In Orlando Disney, we performed for almost six months, every day!

But Americans are really sensitive about blood.

[Manager’s first trip abroad years ago] My manager at the time,

it was his first trip abroad.

Because of me, he hadn’t been a manager for long.

He and I went to Japan together.

But suddenly, he looked kind of strange so I asked, “What’s wrong?”

He says, “Just a second,” and then...

[Throws up]

- What…? - I asked, “What’s wrong?”

He was just so culture-shocked.

Too surprised by everything.

[Culture shock manifests physically] He was so overwhelmed he threw up.

I was so shocked too, he was so overwhelmed.

The first time I went to New York and saw Madison Square Garden

I felt dizzy too, like, “Wow, this is…!”

There are so many stories

about first-time travelers.

My manager actually filled out

his entire family’s names.

I went to Mongolia recently.

People there really like Korean culture

But at immigration

“I'm going to stay seven days.”

And thought I was all set.

So, I get asked.

[Perfectly anticipated question] How long are you going to stay here?

Oh! I'm going to stay 7 year... 7 days!

That’s an illegal stay.

I said “seven days,” but then he’s like...

"Umm..."

“Sukso (Your accommodations)?” he asks.

[Switches to Korean on the spot] Then he says in Korean…

[Getting interesting] “Sukso?”

So I switch to English...

I had something prepared, but then it was like...

"Sukso? Sukso?"

[Freeze]

"Ohm.. gyeo... da nyeo yo..."

[You know, here and there] Oh man, I really just…

We’ll be moving around.

My friend who went with me just lost it.

But he goes up next! And he says, “Seven days.”

I asked and he said, “Seven days.”

And gets asked, “Sukso audi (Where’s your accommodation)?”

So he goes...

We’re staying in a ger (a Mongolian yurt).

"uh..ger ger ger ger."

Seven gers! He does the same thing!

Attempted in English but ended up as...

This reminds me of an old senior of ours.

He went to Japan once, not knowing Japanese

and all he could say was, “Beer kudasai (beer, please)”

[Handled his orders solo just fine] and he ordered fine on his own.

He was alone, but then went with seven others

so it was seven beers.

[Brain freeze] Was like

"How do I say seven beers?"

[Beer please times 7] "Kudasai."

[The pressure of saying "please"]

[Snickering]

[Everyone tearing up] This stuff is just too funny.

Going abroad… so many things happen because of language barriers.

I’m suddenly thinking of so many travel stories.

- Oh! And I even sang once on a trip. - Why?

It was because they were asking me what I do for work

and then they asked, “Are you famous?” I said, “Not really.”

Then they asked, “So you sing too?”

[In hindsight] They were actually asking

if I was an “actor or singer” but I misunderstood.

So I said

"Now?"

[Spontaneous performance for immigration officer] And I actually sang it right there!

[Realizing much later how I misunderstood] Looking back

In the end, he just laughed and let me through.

The person before me, though I didn’t know them they got pulled aside.

[Overflowing travel stories] On a plane once...

This was after filming Confidential Assignment.

Oh, after we finished filming it.

I was seated next to a student.

But he was sitting away from his dad

so he was next to me.

He started watching Confidential Assignment.

So I was feeling a bit anxious.

And I’m not lying, on this 14-hour flight

this middle schooler sat there

right next to me, watching the movie

[The student / Dong Hwi]

and kept pausing every time I was on screen.

[This you?]

Hahaha!

- If he’d just said something... - It might’ve been easier!

[Constantly thinking of the kid’s expression] Except during meal times

we were in economy class

so every time I turned my head I could feel him staring.

[Please...] “Watch something else now! It’s okay to watch something else.”

[Another tear shed] That kid seriously sat there for 8 hours.

That’s hilarious.

His expression was so funny.

He’d look at the screen, then back at me...

So, on a flight to LA

Someone sitting in Ryu Seung-ryong’s window seat] someone was in my window seat.

They were a couple sitting diagonally from each other

so they asked if I could switch seats.

I like watching clouds when I fly, but I agreed.

Since they were a couple, what could I do?

I said, "Alright," and just sat down.

And then the person in the window seat suddenly stood up.

Why?

They took off their hat and mask

and it was Sunny from Girls’ Generation!

[We know each other but hadn’t really met] So we met for the first time like that.

She probably felt uncomfortable too.

It’s a 14-hour flight

all the way to LA...

[It would’ve been easier if we were strangers…] It’s such a long flight to LA.

[An unavoidably awkward journey]

It was incredibly uncomfortable.

Just sitting there with Sunny.

I felt uncomfortable just hearing this story.

[Even when sleeping, it’s nerve-wracking] Waking up, eating...

[Exchanging the most awkward of greetings] “Did you eat?”

[Inexpressibly awkward] Really though.

Oh man, the discomfort was real.

Imagine how uncomfortable Sunny must’ve been too!

You know, I was just worried she might feel uncomfortable.

I felt really bad about it.

She was very polite since I’m a senior, so she…

[Quickly removes her hat and mask to say hello] She suddenly took everything off

and then people saw… who was sitting there.

[Whispering] “Look, it’s Ryu Seung-ryong and Sunny together.”

[Strangely curious companionship]

Even if you know someone a bit but aren’t close

you still feel like you should say something

if they’re next to you.

But you can’t just keep talking, right?

She might just want to rest too.
