Original subtitles

Do I know you? Don't know. I'm a nurse.

12 years ago, me and Rick helped put Paul Harvey behind bars

after he drugged and killed two nurses in Cleddau Woods.

You need to make a noise about this mistreatment, Ryan.

Celyn?

Yeah, I need you to do a search on Mel Owen, please.

Where are you, Mati?!

Don't shoot.

GUNSHOT

The gunman at Bontwerdd High School was once in my care.

He could be the original killer of both nurses.

That's Sian Hinton's husband, isn't it?

I can't sleep, mate.

The evidence that I gave... Keep your voice down.

I can't be sure of what I saw that night.

Sian Hinton - there's no way Paul could have killed her.

He was with me.

What if Anna Harvey's telling the truth and Mel killed Sian?

We should have nailed him back in the day.

Well, at least we've got him now, three days before the deadline.

Yeah, with Abbi's blood on our hands!

So, what was it like, seeing Rick?

All of that is old news.

I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that. No, it's OK, it's OK.

I just, erm... Shit! It's just the shock of everything, OK?

It was a gut reaction.

You were just panicking. Our emotions are all over the place.

Oh, yeah.

It's understandable.

The best thing is just pretend that it never happened, OK?

Kiss? What kiss?

RICK SCOFFS

Eh?

Ffion... Go home to your family.

See you tomorrow.

THEME MUSIC

That was the engagement party.

Rick asked my permission, the daft sod.

GRIFF CHUCKLES

He was all nervous in his cheap suit...

..so I said, "No, no."

HE LAUGHS

Should have seen his face.

But now Ffion's home alone and, erm...

..and, erm...

..I never see Rick.

These are 12 years old, Griff.

It didn't work out.

Rick's married now, to a nurse.

Erm...

..you are not married, are you, love? No.

Can't find anyone to match my dad.

You set the bar too high.

Now, let's find those ordnance maps.

Mogs.

Hey.

How are you...

..after yesterday?

Yeah, I mean, my shoulder still hurts, but I'll live.

RICK SIGHS

How's Mati?

She woke up screaming.

Says she never wants to go back to school. Shit. Mm-hm.

Erm, police doctor is with Mel now.

The gun he used has been sent to NABIS.

Right, I read back over Mel's witness statement

from when he was in Harvey's care at the time of the historic murders,

just to give us context.

To fill you in, Mogsy.

So, Mari Quinlan, the first victim, she suspected that Mel,

aka Robert Jenkins, who was 17 at the time, was being abused

when he turned up in A&E with fractured ribs and multiple bruises.

Maybe that was a red flag, because she alerted social services.

Jesus. Who the hell let them foster?

They'd fostered before.

Anna Harvey had lost three babies. Stillbirths.

So, Mari Quinlan, she was seen two weeks later

arguing with Paul Harvey in the street, before getting into his van.

Yeah, he alleged that he took her home just to check on Mel.

Yeah, Mel corroborated that.

He said that they'd chatted in his bedroom before she left.

Mari Quinlan wasn't seen again until her body was found in Cleddau Woods.

Six days after that, Sian Hinton, Mari's friend,

also a nurse, went missing.

Her body was found in the woods the following night.

Now, we found evidence that Sian Hinton had been held

in a disused bunker prior to her murder.

The night that Sian Hinton's body was moved,

Mel was in his bedroom in the attic. Which tells us that Mel

probably didn't have a clue what was going on

and that Harvey killed the two nurses just to conceal the abuse.

Yeah, but abused children keep secrets, Rick.

Maybe Mel knew more than we thought.

That's not why Mel is here, though, Ffion.

We've got to nail him for Abbi's murder.

Yeah, which has a similar MO.

All three bodies were found with heart knots.

He's loony tunes, Ffion. He walked into a school

with a loaded gun and pointed it at my daughter.

You two, my office.

Ryan Moss has filed a complaint

about being coerced into a confession.

"I was told the jury wouldn't believe me

"unless I told the police what they wanted to hear.

"When I admitted I'd argued with Abbi in the woods,

"the police shut me down, charged me with murder, without giving me

"a chance to explain." He intends to go to the press.

Happy Wednesday, one and all! Oh, come on, we didn't coerce him.

The interview transcripts should shed a light on that.

Sir, he'd attacked my sister, he'd gone on the run, he'd lied

about arguing with Abbi in the woods. So you let your feelings

towards your sister get the better of you? No! This is all we need!

Look, at least we've got Mel and the murder weapon.

It's more or less open and shut.

We also have to consider the connection that Mel has to Harvey.

In terms of being a copycat?

And in light of Anna Harvey's latest revelation.

It means that our perspective on what really happened that night

has to shift. And that's a scab we can't afford to pick.

I've already got Harvey manipulating the situation

by asking to help with the investigation.

It might be worth hearing him out. I won't be a pawn in his game!

In view of this complaint and the fact that you're both

technically Mel's victims and your daughter was involved, Rick,

I don't think you two should conduct the interview. What?!

But I'm SIO. Come on, let me look the bastard in the eye!

I rest my case!

Celyn and Mogsy can step up. Like you said, Rick, open and shut.

And not muddied by new theories about the past.

I can't believe that we're in the gallery like muppets.

You landed us here, boss, harping on about the past.

Well, pass the popcorn. What are we watching?

Interview with Mel Owen, formerly known as Robert Jenkins.

DS Howells, DC Morgan and duty solicitor Mr Michael Bedoe present.

Where did you get the gun, Mel?

Why take a gun to the school?

Whatever I've done, I understand I deserve to be punished.

How long have you been back in Pembroke Dock?

Weeks, months.

Why come to Cleddau Woods?

Did anyone else know about your den?

No.

No-one else had access to it? My secret.

So everything inside it was yours?

What were you doing on Friday afternoon between 3pm and 4pm, Mel?

Drinking, probably. Where?

Don't know. The woods.

Did you happen to see this young woman?

Oh, come on, it's a simple question. Yes or no?

That's Abbi Rayner,

the nurse who was strangled in the woods on Friday night,

not that far from your den.

Have you ever seen this scarf before?

No.

Then how come we found it in your den after we put the fire out?

It's the murder weapon, Mel,

so I'm going to ask you again,

did you see Abbi Rayner in the woods on Friday?

Did you murder Abbi Rayner using the scarf we found hidden

in your den, Mel? We don't talk about the nurses!

SOLICITOR: You need to remain calm.

You don't have to answer their questions.

KNOCK ON DOOR

Erm, interview suspended, 9:39.

"Nurses," he said.

He's referring to the historic murders.

Vaughan said to concentrate on Abbi.

Boss, he's got a heart knot tattoo on his back.

Initials RJ inside.

Look, he's taking us back to that time

and there's clearly something that's frightening him.

When did he get that tattoo? Why? What is it that he's hiding?

If we can unlock the past, we can find out why he killed Abbi Rayner.

Yeah.

So, what did you tell them?

Wait and see.

12 years ago, your foster father, Paul Harvey,

strangled two nurses.

You were 17 and called Robert Jenkins.

Those murders were known as the Heart Knot Murders, Mel.

Do you know why?

Dad liked heart knots.

He made them for Mam's dead babies.

There was a heart knot carved on a tree

near where Abbi Rayner's body was found in the woods.

Had her initials inside.

AR.

She was also a nurse.

You've got one tattooed on your back,

with the initials RJ inside.

Robert Jenkins. Robbie Jenkins is dead!

Gone!

When did you get it done?

Come on, Celyn.

Now, when did you get it?

He made me do it.

Who made you do what, Mel?

It's a loop.

A never-ending circle of love. You can't escape it.

Mari Quinlan wanted you to escape, didn't she? From the abuse.

The fucking nurses...

..they tear the families apart.

It was all my fault.

HE SOBS

No please, Dad!

Not the hole!

HE SOBS

It's too dark!

HE SOBS

SOLICITOR: My client is clearly agitated. We have to break.

God. Nice one, Ffion.

Interview suspended, 9:44.

You OK, Mel?

You can take a break. Just tell me what you meant - "Not the hole."

This is deeply inappropriate.

He made me sleep in it.

Mam sang to keep the demons away.

But the demons are in here!

We've got his medical records through.

Mel is suffering with PTSD after a tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2013.

Flashbacks, psychosis, blackouts,

a fear of threat and persecution.

His best friend in the Army was shot dead in front of him in their hut.

The following day, he allegedly opened fire on a group of civilians.

No-one was harmed but he was discharged.

Right, well, that could explain why he's so protective of his den.

Nah.

His trauma started way before the Army.

We can thank Harvey for that. Well, we should stay clear

of his time as a foster kid and just focus on Abbi.

OK, well, while he cools down, I suggest we take an early lunch.

Shall I do a sandwich run? Not for me.

Is he here?

He's locked up in jail, Mel.

Aargh!

Argh! Argh!

I'm sorry it took so long to answer.

Oh, I've been having death threats over the phone.

I barely go out any more.

Still being punished for what Paul did.

Have you reported it?

The police won't care.

I'll get a squad car to pass by, do regular checks.

Thank you.

That gunman in the school was my foster son...

..Robbie. I know.

I saw him on the news. I didn't even know he was back here.

SHE SIGHS

My boy.

Three years we had him.

Why didn't he come to see me?

But then...

..what use had I been to him?

Love couldn't protect him.

No wonder he escaped.

Anna, the night Sian Hinton's body was moved from the bunker

to the woods, where was Mel?

Robbie.

In bed.

In bed where exactly?

The bedroom in the attic with a sealed window,

which is what you told the police?

Or was he somewhere else?

Somewhere so awful that you sang outside to soothe him?

Box room.

You locked him in? Paul did.

To teach him not to bring strangers to our door.

I did my best.

After I sang to him, I was punished, too.

I'm not judging you, Anna.

Does this window open?

I think so.

Was Robbie able to drive? Yes.

Paul taught him. Why?

Well, now that you've told us that Harvey was home all night, I...

..wondered if Robbie could have moved Sian's body.

No, not my Robbie.

He was troubled, but...

..gentle.

He'd only ever harm himself.

Erm...

..it was me who told Robbie to go to A&E.

I was worried about internal injuries.

We were going to keep it a secret, and then, erm...

..Mari Quinlan started asking questions.

Erm, I need to book a taxi to take me to an oncology appointment.

I'll give you a lift.

OK.

Haven't we got enough, sir?

Between the shooting at the school, the murder weapon and his psychosis.

News about Harvey's appeal is spreading.

The press are closing in, top brass is giving me earache,

and rumours are rife that we got the wrong man 12 years ago.

After what happened with Ryan Moss,

and before the town loses all faith in us, I'd like a confession.

But he's not even admitting to seeing Abbi, sir.

He's all over the place.

And...

..it doesn't help that Ffion is telling Celyn

to question him about the past.

Hmm.

SIREN WAILS

Oh, you're very kind.

I don't know why.

I think you're brave, Anna, coming forward despite the risks.

I don't feel brave.

SHE COUGHS

I dread Paul coming out.

Finding me.

Well, we can sort police protection.

It's only a matter of time.

Him...

..or the big C.

I know which one I'd prefer.

SHE COUGHS

Here you go.

Thanks. You're the first person who's looked out for me in years.

Anna Jennings.

Oh...

OK.

Hi.

Hey, Ffion.

What are you doing here? I was just doing a favour.

How's Mati? She's with my mum.

Getting spoilt rotten, bless her.

Thank you again for saving her.

You're a star.

And sorry if I ever, you know...

..made you feel uneasy.

Possessive wife and all that.

Rick is lucky to have you as a partner.

Keep changing the dressing.

MOBILE PHONE BUZZES

Hi, boss. Hi, Celyn.

Can you grab the Harvey case file from my desk, please? Yeah.

Hang on.

Alex Hinton? Sian's husband?

Yeah, just on the way to get it now. Thank you.

Erm... Yeah. Yeah, it's here.

OK.

Yeah, here we are.

Erm... Right, on the night Sian Hinton's body was moved

from the bunker to the wood,

Alex Hinton saw Harvey's van around 10pm

coming out of a side road on the western side of the woods.

At first, he couldn't give a clear description other than the driver

was male, white and wearing a baseball cap.

And then after Harvey's arrest, he picked him out of a line-up

in an ID parade.

Erm, yeah.

That is 22, Ashurst Square, SA72 5CC...

Phone.

What is it, Ffion?

Look, there's an outside chance that Mel was driving Harvey's van

the night that Sian Hinton's body was dumped.

Where did you get this from? I'll explain later.

I just want to pop to Alex Hinton's house to check on his statement.

No, no, no. Hang on, Ffion. You can't just resurrect

the most tragic time of Alex's life on a whim.

Well, I'll be sensitive. OK, but let me come with you, at least.

I know him better than you do.

Well, maybe it's better that it's impersonal.

Look, I'm not too far from his address. It'll be fine.

Remember how upset you were when he laid into you

or how you beat yourself up for not being able to rescue Sian in time?

Come on, Ffion. Yeah, why do you think I'm doing this, Rick?

If we messed up, if we got the wrong man, then,

well, in your words, we need justice for Sian Hinton.

Yeah, I know...

PHONE BEEPS

Everything all right?

Rick? Hmm?

Erm, yeah.

Yeah.

Thanks.

Alex, it's Rick.

When you get this message, will you call me back, please? It's urgent.

MOBILE PHONE RINGS

PHONE RINGS

DOORBELL

RINGING CONTINUES

MOBILE PHONE BUZZES

Robbie was always a weird kid.

He'd self-harm.

Throw himself down the stairs,

bang his own head, anything for attention, but I...

I never thought of him as evil.

And then when I saw him on the news...

..that vacant stare...

..after terrorising those children...

..then it all fell into place.

And now I want to do right by Mari Quinlan and Sian Hinton.

I have new information about the past.

Now...

..DCI Vaughan won't want to know about it,

so I need you to get in touch with the SIO, DI Ffion Lloyd.

She'll come running.

She's a stickler for the truth.

KNOCK ON DOOR

Hey.

How did it go with Alex?

He wasn't in.

I'm sorry if I was harsh earlier.

But I've seen what Sian's death has done to him over the years.

His life is just on hold.

He hasn't got over losing the mother of his son.

If only we'd found her.

We did try.

Not hard enough.

OK.

OK, what makes you think that Mel was driving the van?

I spoke to Anna Harvey.

You...? Oh, shit, Ffion!

Mel wasn't in his attic bedroom

the night that Sian Hinton's body got moved from the bunker, Rick.

He was sleeping downstairs in a box room with a window.

Now, as a victim of Harvey's abuse, in his head, the nurses might not

have been out to help him, they might have been a threat.

If Harvey was at home that night, the driver could have been Mel.

But Alex placed Harvey at the wheel, so Anna is lying.

What's in it for Anna? She is shit scared of him.

I don't know, Ffion.

But I'll tell you this, when you go rogue and shut me out,

it feels like you don't trust me.

KNOCK ON DOOR

Doctor says we can interview Mel, but we've got to go easy.

There's a possibility it was Mel driving the van 12 years ago

and he dumped Sian Hinton's body in the woods.

That's the line of inquiry.

I want to take you back to your childhood, Mel.

When you were 17.

When you were Robbie Jenkins.

To the time of the Heart Knot Murders.

Mari Quinlan and Sian Hinton were strangled.

It's all my fault.

What is?

Is that what your dad said?

Have you talked to him?

Can we go back to the night the second victim,

Sian Hinton's body was moved from the bunker and dumped in the woods?

You said Dad was in prison. He is, Mel.

He wanted me to visit, but...

..I couldn't face him.

I want you to hear what you told us in your statement

about the night Sian Hinton's body was moved.

"I went to my bedroom early, got into bed.

"I'd been having nightmares,

"so my mum sang to me outside the door all night.

"She couldn't come in because Dad said

"I wasn't a child, I was a young man."

Old enough to join the Army, old enough to kill. Bang! Bang!

He's lost the plot.

But you weren't in the bedroom in the attic, were you, Mel?

You were downstairs, in the box room.

The hole. It must have been scary,

locked in like that.

MUFFLED: There was a window in the box room, wasn't there?

HE WHIMPERS

He's terrified.

MUFFLED: Are you OK, Mel?

Did you go out of the window, Mel?

Did you drive your dad's van?

A demon shot my friend.

It should be me dead on the floor with half a face.

Can you smell burning?

Did you go to the bunker and move Sian Hinton's body?

There was death everywhere.

Who told you about the bunker?

He's all over the place.

You've just got to keep him focused on the historic timeframe,

what he knows about the bunker in Cleddau Woods.

Easier said than done, boss.

Rick's brought me up to speed with the latest developments.

I trust we're now concentrating on the case in hand?

Seems the suspect's confused enough as it is.

When did you see the dead bodies in the bunker, Mel?

I'm not well.

I see stuff.

Did your dad take you to the bunker in the woods?

He's here, isn't he?

You're talking to him...

..in the gaps.

Can you describe the bodies?

Where is he?

Is this one of them?

Nurses want to hurt us.

Was this woman in the bunker?

Stop showing them to me! They're not angels, they're demons.

Is that why they had to be killed?

I know you're watching me, Dad!

Is any of this admissible?

The past is triggering him. We should put a stop to this.

What do you want me to say, Dad?!

She stuck her nose in, then she must have as well.

Then her!

I only tried to talk to her.

She didn't want to know.

Turned her nose up.

Stuck up bitch!

Like shit on a shoe!

So, they did meet.

What happened then, Mel?

I don't remember.

I tried to escape.

But it's a loop.

A knot.

He branded me.

Rick, go make the arrest. With pleasure.

Stop!

But sir, he...

No buts. Mel will be locked up for a long time

and Harvey's conviction is safe.

MEL SOBS

So climb out of that rabbit hole you're stuck in,

and bugger off down the pub.

That's an order.

Did you have to grass me up to Vaughan?

I was worried that Mel was going to be a write-off.

We got a result, didn't we? Come on.

MOBILE PHONE RINGS

Ffion Lloyd.

Er, yeah, I can do that.

OK, thanks for getting in touch.

What?

Well, can I trust you?

Don't be like that, you know you can. What?

That was Harvey's lawyer.

Harvey's asked to speak to me tomorrow.

Says he wants to tell the truth about the past.

I'm going to drive up there tonight.

What about Vaughan?

Well, he told me to go to a pub.

Just not one that's 150 miles away.

OK, I'm coming with you.

You're not interested in the past.

Ffion, we worked our arses off to put Harvey away.

If he wants to talk, finally, then I want to hear what he's got to say,

whether I like it or not.

OK, fine. But you're driving.

Are you sure you're OK with this?

Well, it's not the best timing. No.

But it's work, it's Paul Harvey, must be important.

Oh, believe me, Ffion can cope.

I don't want you sidelined.

OK. Thanks, love.

It's Ffion I feel sorry for.

Three and a half hours in the car with your grumpy chops. Hey!

I saw her today at the hospital.

With Paul Harvey's wife.

Yeah.

She's got cancer. Anna Harvey, that is.

And why is Ffion ferrying her about?

Just following inquiries.

Don't fob me off.

I know Harvey's launching an appeal.

Is his conviction unsafe, now that you've arrested Mel?

Is that what you're going to talk to him about?

You keep that to yourself, Helen Sheldon

of the Pembroke Guardian.

What's it worth?

Are you sure you and Mati will be OK?

Yeah.

Get out!

I'll call the police. Get away from me! Dad?

Fuck off!

What's wrong? Delyth!

Get away from me! Dad? He broke in.

He woke up freaked out. And he pushed me.

I was trying to hold him back. OK, Dad, this is Jamie.

We know him. I don't know him.

Delyth!

What have you done with my wife?

She was here a minute ago, ironing. If you've hurt her, I'll...

Dad.

Mum's working at the Citizens' Advice, remember?

Jamie's your carer.

Now give me the poker.

I-I don't need a carer.

I'm not a child! OK. Sit down.

Do you want me to wait till Mum gets home? Nah, it's OK.

Him and me understand each other.

There we go, pyjamas.

Oh, life-saver.

Off somewhere nice? Prison.

Worcestershire. Ah, the glamour. Mmm.

Is this to do with Paul Harvey?

Or shouldn't I ask?

Yes. And no.

I've made some Welsh cakes. Take some.

Griff's already had eight.

No, I haven't.

Tell me again why you're single.

Who's your new friend?

SHE SIGHS

Dad's carer.

Is Griff that bad?

ENGINE STARTS

Thanks.

Well, I don't know about you, but I could really do with a drink.

I'm tired, Rick.

Though I doubt I'll sleep.

Well, a nightcap.

Come on.

I suppose one won't hurt.

TELEVISION PLAYS

SHE SIGHS

ANSWER MESSAGE: Rick's phone. Leave a message and I'll get back to you.

Hi, Rick. Hope you got there safely.

Give me a call when you can.

Love you.

Harvey's summoned us, so I guess we have to let him take the lead. Mmm.

He doesn't know that Anna's given him an alibi.

I wonder if he'll tell us more about where Mel was that night.

Mel was both terrorised by him and in awe of him.

It's classic Stockholm syndrome.

He's an easy target.

HE WHIMPERS

DOOR UNLOCKS

Sian Hinton.

The pathologist said she was kept alive in the bunker

for a number of hours.

Mel might have done more than move her body, Rick. Ffion, don't.

He could have killed her. But he didn't, Harvey did.

And if he did and we missed it, Abbi would still be alive.

You're getting ahead of yourself now. We're 12 years bloody behind.

I wish I was as sure of Harvey's convictions as you are.

Another one?

Go on, then.

My round.

Griff was hands-down the best defence lawyer I ever saw in court.

Such a brilliant mind.

He was asking where you were this morning.

He thinks we're still engaged.

He's the dad I never had.

I miss him.

So do I.

Course, he wanted to kill you when you cheated on me.

I thought you were cheating on me. No, Rick.

I was lonely,

threw myself into work.

Well, sorry for presuming the worst.

You're forgiven, Precious.

One for the road?

HE BREATHES QUICKLY

RATTLING

HE SCREAMS

Number nine. This is me.

Night, then.

Why didn't you fight for us?

Sorry, was I supposed to?

I wanted you to, yeah.

I confessed, you just accepted it,

and then you just walked out of my life.

I know I messed up a bit... I walked away, Rick,

because Helen had already warned me off.

She told me that she was pregnant.

And I knew that after the childhood that you'd had,

that you couldn't be an absent dad. So I did the right thing.

ANSWER MESSAGE: Rick's phone. Leave a message...

Helen never said that you'd spoken.
