Original subtitles

Thank you.

Oh, your eye's holding up.

Just getting so I can't see the screen, let alone the keyboard.

Want to run it again?

Yeah, where do you want to go from? Shooting?

No, earlier. From where Cardinal Scafodo steps in the car.

The Rome House called this morning to underscore the need for immediate

Everyone's very concerned over who or what may be behind the assassination of

the Cardinal.

If they want to know why, the sooner we can tell them, the better.

Time for the second shift.

Well, any luck IDing the assassin?

Well, we've downloaded all the footage sent over by Carmack, but so far we've

got nothing.

With all the confusion, it's very hard to pin down the point of attack.

One word, please.

Yeah, who is it?

Notice the force with which he's been struck and the way he's thrown

The assassin must be there in the crowd somewhere.

Yeah, but there's no heat signature within 100 yards.

According to the ballistic report, the bullet, or whatever it was that killed

him, went right through him. So far, the boys in blue haven't been able to find

it, though.

So either it disintegrated... Or disappeared.

Just like the others.

Clearly, there's a pattern.

Three killings in three months.

All religious leaders.

Different cities, different faiths, but all killed by an unseen assassin with a

weapon that can't be identified.

So whoever it was seems to have some kind of personal crusade against

religion. Kill the shepherd and lead the flock to slaughter.

It's not your usual conspiracy.

No.

Something much darker.

Well, I'm going to go have a shower and shake the cobwebs out. Maybe we can come

back at this from a new angle.

Okay. We'll give you a shot if we find anything new.

All right, then.

Alex, let's have another look at all the crowd footage.

It's him.

Richter? Yeah.

The guy you told me about? The one who led your field team into the ambush in

South America?

The one whose body was never found?

The one and only.

The picture was taken the week that I reported for duty.

You're sure this photo isn't yours?

Yeah, yeah. Richter used to take one with every new guy. It was kind of a

personal record in case he didn't come back.

Sounds reassuring.

Men must have loved him for that.

We did.

He was a legend.

I remember when I got assigned to his unit just after jump school, how

privileged I felt.

It was only after you got to know him for a while that you realized that he

just a little crazier than the rest of us.

A lot crazier, actually.

Crazy enough to slip past our security just to let you know he's still around,

huh?

Yeah.

Well, there must be more to it than that.

What about his shell casing?

Ah, it's a .50 caliber Hastings. The SEALs use it on special ops when it's

tough to get in close.

The assassination.

Sniper rifle.

Hastings is accurate to range into over half a mile.

So the assassin wouldn't have had to be right there in the crowd. We were wrong

assuming that he needed to be close in order to get a clear shot.

Yeah.

He's got to be sitting somewhere high.

Right there.

Look at the clock tower.

It's gotta be him.

He could cap a cockroach from that range.

It's Richter.

How can you tell?

His face is covered.

I don't know. There's something about him. Something familiar.

Stop it.

You're going somewhere?

Yeah, I'm just taking a little trip up north.

A few things I've got to find out.

About Richter?

Yeah. You know, from what we saw on the videotape, it's a good possibility it

wasn't even him.

It's always a possibility.

We're supposed to be a team, Nick, remember?

You know, you sound an awful lot like Derek right now.

Yeah, well... This has nothing to do with the legacy, Rachel.

This is between Richter and I.

When I was a SEAL.

They taught us that the best defense was a preemptive strike.

That's what I intend to do.

Okay. But can you hear yourself right now?

You passed with Richter. It's just blinding you, Nick.

All right, let's say you're right. And Richter's out there.

Don't you see that this knee -jerk reaction you're having is exactly what

counting on? Can't you see you're being set up?

Maybe so.

There's some things you just can't ride around.

I gotta go, Rach.

Where?

Ah, Spokane.

Somebody I gotta talk to up there. Who?

Richter's got his sister.

What exactly do you expect her to say?

I don't know.

Maybe nothing.

But if we're gonna find him and stop him, then we have to start somewhere.

Okay, just promise me one thing.

If you do find something, don't go out there and try to get him by yourself.

again.

Have you heard from him?

No, I haven't.

Have you?

No.

A couple of years ago, I wrote away for his records under the Freedom of

Information Act.

When did he contact you?

What are you talking about?

Your brother's out there in some sort of dark crusade, and you know it, don't

you? You better go.

Not until I know what's happened with him.

Why are you doing this?

Because a week ago, a Catholic cardinal was shot down on the steps of a San

Francisco hotel.

And the month before that, in Jerusalem, an Orthodox rabbi was assassinated just

yards from the Wailing Wall. And the month before that... Don't stop!

So where is he?

Three months ago, I received this.

It's not a sign, but it's his handwriting.

Coeur d 'Alene, Idaho.

May I keep this?

Did you know he went to the Citadel?

Graduated first in his class.

Yes, ma 'am.

He was a hell of a soldier.

Thank you.

A friend, Mr. Boyle, is coming.

See that he arrives alive.

Sorry I couldn't help you more with that postmark.

Not all I can say for sure is whoever mailed it must have mailed it here.

Well, thanks for checking, anyhow.

2 ,000 rounds.

That's a lot of ammo.

Well, you never know when you're going to need it.

They'll have too much and too little.

That's right.

Going hunting?

Thinking about it. You know a good tracker?

Best in the business. Standing right here. Hey, Charlie!

Fellow here looking for a guide.

Might need your help.

Well, have a good day.

Thank you.

Oh.

You interested?

Depends.

What's he looking for?

You seen this guy around here?

Could be.

I get 200 bucks a day.

He's Navy, isn't he?

How'd you guess?

Served with the Seabees for three years.

Just kind of casual for shore patrol, aren't you?

It's personal.

Still smells like Navy business to me.

Been discharged from the SEALs for five years.

So this guy's a SEAL too, is he?

Used to be.

Well, like I said, 300 bucks.

Plus expenses.

Thought you said two.

No offense, but you guys are nuts.

Let's just call it hazard pay.

In advance.

Deal.

Better not tell you anymore or I'll be broke before we start.

Better not tell me anymore or you'll have to kill me too, right?

Right.

Yeah, I saw this guy a couple of times.

North of here.

Give him some other honchos on the run.

You mean SEALs?

I don't know.

Why don't you have a look?

All right.

Show me.

I'm on the job.

The murder was execution style.

The village briefed.

Outside Madrid, three months ago.

Above the altar, they found the word, the cleansing.

The freelance photojournalist that took this picture was actually shot right

through his own camera lens. That's terrible.

The cleansing, isn't that the message that was sent to the police right after

the Cardinal's murder?

Yes, exactly.

Any word from Nick?

I talked to him about three hours ago. He called me from Spokane.

He said he'd met with Richter's sister.

Didn't he tell you where he was going?

In fact, he was kind of evasive. Well, this is ridiculous.

He can't do this by himself.

He thinks he can. In fact, he thinks he has to.

It's some sort of misplaced survivor's guilt.

Nick can't come to terms with the fact that he's the only one left alive.

You're right.

Finding Richter is something Nick must do. And he convinced himself that he

do it all alone.

John Wesley Richter.

He was everybody's number one.

His grandfather was wounded on Omaha Beach.

His father did two tours in Nam before he came home in a body bag.

They sent him to the Citadel.

He graduated first in his class.

IQ of 145.

He lettered in wrestling, going to the NCAA finals all four years.

National champion the last three.

Everybody thought he'd go Army, but he fooled them by going Navy instead.

The betting was he'd make Admiral by 40.

In 1980, he applied for basic underwater demolition and SEAL training at

Coronado, California.

For Richter, it was a walk in the park.

They assigned him to SEAL Team 10.

The time Desert Storm rolled around, he was a platoon commander.

He won a Silver Star and two Purple Hearts.

He lost one man.

That's when I joined his squad.

Scott.

Banks.

Wakefield.

Heston.

The Tony.

And Royce.

They've been together five years.

I was the odd man out.

How far?

Just over that ridge.

That's where I saw him a couple months ago, just floating along like ghosts in

the wind.

Think you can find it in the dark?

If I have to.

Well, that's what we're gonna do.

You're not up here for the hunting, are you?

Looks like your friend Richter's a little more than just AWOL.

What do you want him for?

Murder.

You still with me?

Let's go.

Listen to my prayer, dear God.

In my prayer, show me now, reveal your

true face to this, your willing and humble

servant.

Yes.

normally come out here at night.

Oh, yeah?

That's where they were, right over there.

Show me.

It's too dark.

Can't track what you can't see.

All right, we'll cold camp here for the night and then move out at first light.

Cold camp? What are you, nuts, boy?

Wouldn't you rather have a nice warm fire?

Positive.

Who'd this guy murder, anyway?

Come on, I've got a few seconds. You or Marie?

It was five years ago.

We were an eight -man squad sent in to drop the dime on a drug lord throughout

the equator.

We got ambushed.

I was on point, maybe 500 meters ahead.

We got hit from behind.

By the time I got back, all I found were bodies.

All of them?

All but one.

So what you're saying to me is that, well, you never actually saw what

did you?

Maybe you're wrong.

Tell that to the cardinal I killed last week.

I saw him over there, about 100 meters.

Give me your sidearm. I'll cover you.

It's not your fight.

It is now. They woke me up.

Let's move out.

He came this way.

I don't like it.

I feel too easy.

Well, maybe it ain't. Maybe I'm just good.

Yeah, so are they.

Do you want to find them or not?

All right, let's go.

Like I said before, this is too easy.

How come every time you say too easy, I think bad?

Every time we lose the trail, we see one of them just long enough to keep us

coming.

What are you doing now?

Traveling light.

Look, you don't have anything invested in this. Maybe you want to sit it out in

the car.

Tell it to your sister.

There it is.

You see it, that hole in the rock?

Yeah.

And there's our boy right on time.

Okay, Charlie, this is it.

I want you to go back to the backpack.

Inside you'll find a cell phone.

Dial star one on the auto dial and ask for Derek Rain.

Tell him that we found Richter and I want him to bring the chopper up, meet

at the footbridge, and bring him back here. No, no, no, man.

What about you? I can't let you go in there alone.

I'll back you up.

Charlie, if you really want to help, you'll make the call.

Okay, but don't be no hero, kid.

You neither.

Hey, I'm CP, remember?

My mama didn't raise no fool.

What the hell's going on here?

The prodigal son returns.

What the hell kind of dark deal you got going on here?

What did you do to Scott and Banks?

Nothing.

They're dead.

Don't you remember?

You were there.

You brought them back?

They helped me with my work.

Your work?

Spreading the word of God.

By killing his clergy?

No.

You must look past the killing as

a necessary evil.

Where I come from, there's no such thing as a necessary evil.

Where you come from, there's no future.

Convince you to join me.

What the

hell

happened to them? They're gone.

Do you think I've come all this way to join you?

I've come to kill you.

That'll never happen.

You want to talk about the truth?

You tell me what the hell went on five years ago.

That's when it all began.

It was terrifying.

The jungle.

The bodies.

But you don't remember because you didn't watch them die.

You were close enough to see what was really happening, but I was close.

I was so close.

You hear their screams.

But I didn't do anything about it.

So you ran.

No!

Is that what you think?

That I deserted?

I ran.

When they lit up the jungle behind us, I ran. I ran towards the light.

It was... It was like... I ran into a tunnel.

Into a different world.

This is delusional.

You read it! Read it!

Read it!

Read it!

And God made man in his image, in his image, in likeness made he.

How can it work so well for the rest of us? Because you never thought it

through.

God didn't write these words.

They were written by a man.

A man of flesh and blood like you, like me.

The premise of all great religions.

God loved us so much he made us to look like him. But Nick, what if it isn't

true? I suppose it's all a lie.

That's a really interesting theory, Psycho. Now, why don't you prove it?

I intend to.

I need to speak to Darren Green.

Nick didn't call himself?

No. Nick, we really got to move.

Do you want to see the face of God?

Look closely.

That is his true face.

Spiders.

No.

Not just spiders.

The villagers call them Otni.

The deal.

The eyes of God.

Where they let you see what only he can see.

Give me the strength and the power to do what must be done.

You're right, kid.

Five years I lived in a jungle with the mud people.

Creatures.

They're not some fantasy I dreamed of me.

They're real.

They taught you this?

So I could teach the world.

You could be my disciple.

You're strong.

I need you with me.

Help me to erase the false gods.

Take the point from me again, Nick.

You'll do it.

What do I have to do?

Exactly as I tell you.

Kneel with me.

Spider venom.

The villagers use it to poison the tips of their arrows.

But a single spider has only enough to empower us.

To open the window to our souls.

First untie me, and I won't run.

I know.

Press him under the roof of your mouth and swallow.

Then you'll understand.

Who's there?

Thought you were rid of me, huh?

I guess I'm not that lucky.

What happened to the leg?

Same thing that happened to this bridge.

Sounds like the cavalry's here.

Come on, let's get you home.

Most of us only get one shot at life.

John Wesley Richter got two.

First as a soldier who saw too much of death to die himself.

And second as the Messiah for a strange and nameless God.

Although there's no way to know for certain.

I'd like to believe his soul is at last at rest.

After six years in the slammer, their time is coming to an end.

But who goes and how they go is the big question.
