BAT, V/O: I was just a young man when I first headed west.
In the years that followed, I became a cowboy, a gunslinger,
and even served as sheriff of Dodge City,
one of the most lawless towns in the country.
My name is Bat Masterson.
Now I'm a reporter. And I've come West again
to chronicle the world that I know best.
These are the incredible true tales of the Wild West.

ALICE: Mr. Masterson,
I'm not real willing
to talk about that time.
Miss Reeves,
I've always had the utmost respect for your father.
ALICE: I know.
I used to read your columns to him.
But I thought you were here to write his obituary,
not dredge up a difficult time for our family.
- There will be plenty of folks
writing obituaries about Marshal Reeves,
but I think that the story of how your
father arrested his own son will
say more about Bass Reeves than any obituary ever could.
- I'm sorry, but my answer is no.

ALICE: Help with my brother's petition to reduce his sentence
due to the circumstances.

BENJAMIN: Well,

can do quite well for himself.

BASS: Benjamin?

but you are just blind to when it comes to your own family.

- You're never home for more than a week
before you saddle up again.
BASS: Alice,
your mother understood that
I need to provide for this house.

[DOOR SQUEAKS, THEN CLOSES]
ALICE: My father knew family was important.
But, he never missed an opportunity to go after bad men.
It was like he was still trying to prove himself to-

- I understand.
His work was important but dangerous.
He had to hunt outlaws in the Indian Territory.
It's a no-man's land where
lawmen were ambushed and killed. - Hm hmm.
- Outlaws used to leave cards on the trails,
threatening the marshals.

My father paid them no mind.

He knew how to protect himself.

SECOND OUTLAW: Nah, don't shoot.

SECOND OUTLAW: It's time for payback.
[GUNSHOT] [COCKS GUN]
BLUE EAGLE: Drop your guns and start running

BAT: I take it this was a member of one of the Five Tribes.
- When my father escaped slavery, he had to hide out in the Indian Territory.
That's why he knew it better than any other marshal,
and he made some friends.
BAT: This was an old acquaintance.

for saving my life back there.
You know, you taught me so much,
especially how to use this.

Your brow is heavy.

- It's my son, Benjamin.
I don't even know how to say this, but
he killed his wife in a jealous rage.
- And he came out to this land to hide.
- I don't know what I'm going to do when I find him.
I can't even stay on his trail.

We went hunting up there in Cedar Canyon.
It was a much happier time.
BLUE EAGLE: And there is much beauty up there.
- Do you think he would go there?
BLUE EAGLE: He faces great sorrow.
He seeks a place of comfort,
and maybe he wants you to find him.
- We did stay at an old friend's hunting cabin.
Maybe I'll find him there.
BLUE EAGLE: When you do find your son,
help him atone for his crimes.
- How?
- He has to pay for his crimes by your world's laws,
but you must stand with him through that ordeal.
- I'm not sure I can do that.
BLUE EAGLE: Bass,
he is still your son.

[HORSE BLUSTERS]
[WIND BLOWING]

[LIGHT TAPPING ON DOOR]
BASS: Ben are you in there?
It's Pop. I'm coming in.

- Then you shot Cassie?
- I made a mess of things.
I made a mess of everything, Pop.

- You know I can't do that, Son.
You can't run from this.

[BEN SNIFFS]

[BEN CRIES]

BAT: It must have been hard for Bass to watch
his own son be tried for murder.
- He bore it well
and he went to trial every day.
My father's support gave Benjamin the fortitude to survive in prison.
- Fort Leavenworth?
That is a tough place to do time.
- It is,
but Benjamin found purpose.
He's the prison barber.
They say he's a model prisoner, but
our father's death has been a big blow.
- Thank you for your time, Alice.
Tell you what,
I'll talk with Benjamin myself.

BAT, V/O: When Oklahoma became a state in 1907,
Bass Reeves left the US Marshals and became
one of the first police officers in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
He died in 1910.
Benjamin Reeves served 11 years
at Fort Leavenworth as a model prisoner.
In November, 1914, his sentence was commuted,
and he lived the rest of his life peacefully.

BASS: Marshal Bennett,
my son Benjamin is here to turn himself in.
And I'm here to stand by my son,
not as a lawman,
but as his father,
to make sure he gets a fair trial.
