Illusion, the art of tricking the brain, distorting the senses, challenging
perception. You can't trust what you see, even with your own eyes.
Meet the Masters of Illusion.
Hi,
I'm Dean Cain, and welcome to Masters of Illusion.
Now, the way we process information is basically this.
Our brain takes input from all of our senses, and if something doesn't seem to
add up, if it doesn't seem to make sense, our minds will probably reject
it's being told.
Well, in the next half hour, we are going to challenge your brains to make
of things that I promise you won't add up.
And speaking of things that don't add up, here is Ed Alonzo. Hello, Ed. Well,
I've got a clean slate, but on the back I put a prediction. Do you have any idea
what I've predicted?
No.
Gotcha. Let's try another one. Okay.
Pick a category. Card trick, rope trick, or I shoot you out of a cannon.
Well, I'm not going to pick the cannon. So how about rope trick?
Rope trick.
There it is. Hope you like it.
Hope.
All right. I didn't expect that.
At Alonzo, ladies and gentlemen.
The next master of illusion has performed all over the world. In his
he's heard many amazing stories, and tonight, he is bringing one to life,
for us.
Here's Joshua Jay.
And I am joined here by Sivan, randomly chosen person from the audience. Hello,
thanks for being up here.
I have a story to tell you. It's 100 % true. In 1994...
Two people walked into the National Gallery Art Museum in Norway and stole
of the most famous, valuable paintings in the world, Edvard Munch, The Scream.
And this is Edvard Munch, The Scream.
I mean, that's not the original. I didn't take it. I wasn't there. You're
of looking at me like I stole this.
Anyway, it was an amazing feat to have stolen this painting. And it's special
and famous for all sorts of reasons. And one of them was just discovered
recently. They x -rayed the painting last year and discovered between the
layers, between the paint and the canvas, there were messages, including
that said, could only have been drawn by a madman.
And that's what makes it so special.
Now, the two guys who stole it, when they took it off the wall, they left in
place a note on the wall that said, thanks for the poor security. This is
true. And it was later recovered where it was least expected.
Now, I'm not saying art heights are magic tricks.
but i'm saying that's a pretty amazing story so we are going to try an art
of our own i would like you to just point to one of these cards anyone that
like okay and you've got to sign your work of art i guess portraiture at this
point so just put your name where there's some space there this makes this
of art totally unique to savan and i will take your work of art
And from this moment forward, don't take your eyes off anything.
Now you see her.
Now you don't.
And I will show you every work of art, front and back.
I don't see it.
And that, my friends,
is an artist.
Thanks for the poor security.
But the question is, where did your painting go?
And I told you, it was later recovered in the place least expected.
You were expecting your card there. That would have been so cool. That's what I
should have done.
But I told you that what makes Moose the Scream so famous, so great, the
attention to detail, that level between the layers.
Look at this.
Between the layers of this painting, there's an outline of something
secret in the middle. You can see it's completely imprisoned in glass, yet
is something inside the painting.
That is your word of honor.
Escape policy is the study and practice of accomplishing the seemingly
impossible. Freeing yourself from handcuffs, straitjackets, cages, even
Well, our next act... features an illusionist who is pushing the
this field. Please welcome Rob Lake.
Next, watch the astounding skill of Tetra when we return.
He is known for the unexplainable, unimaginable, and for always being
unpredictable. Here's Tetra.
So I have a volunteer here from the audience, Dennis.
Nice to meet you, Dennis.
So it's been said that everything is made of energy. As a magician, I'm going
see if we can tap into that energy for a different kind of card trick.
First, we'll start by winding up the deck.
Next, we will build up the energy a little bit more.
I can feel it building.
Here, have a look so you can see that they're all different.
As I turn away, go ahead and select a card at random.
Have a look, commit it to memory, and show the audience.
I'll take the card, and we will set it on the deck and cut it into the middle
that it is lost.
But all is not lost. We just need to tap into that energy.
So, Dennis, if you could.
Go like this.
Clap and rub.
There you go.
And go like this.
Tap into that energy with me. Here we go.
Your card, the three of diamonds.
Give it up for Dennis. To you, Dennis.
Prepare to be amazed.
I always look forward to what he has in his never -ending bag of tricks.
Here's Nathan's band.
Yes, hello, hello, everyone.
I've got a new friend with me, Jack. Yes, hello, Jack. Lovely to meet you.
Jack, I've got inside this paper bag, half a paper sack of fruit, okay?
I want you to imagine that you've just come home. You've got a bowl of assorted
fruit on the table, and you're going to pick one up, take a bite of it, enjoy it
as a snack. What fruit are you enjoying?
Apple. An apple. Excellent. So, would you be impressed if I could reach inside
the bag and pull out an apple? Yeah. That'd be a pretty solid trick, right?
Well, whether or not you believe it, inside the bag is indeed an apple.
Amazing. Yes, an apple.
Huzzah. An apple. Yes. Okay, so now you're probably wondering how that
I'm actually going to teach you all how it works. The secret is, they always say
apple. It's true. Just listen to the way that I phrase it. You imagine there's a
bowl of fruit. You're going to reach in there and take a bite out of it. I also
mime shining up my lapel. Everyone thinks apples. All you do is you walk
with an apple inside a bag. You say, hey, think of fruit, take a bite of it,
apple. And then they always say apple, and you're all sorted and set.
Okay, I have to be honest. They don't always say apple. Sometimes they say,
anybody here think of an orange? That's usually the next common one. Like 5 % of
people say orange. So if that's the case, then what you do is you walk
and guess what? You just put an orange inside the bag. And if you put an orange
inside the bag, you'll be set if they say apple or orange.
Now, sometimes people don't say apples or oranges. Sometimes they think of
something a bit more exotic, in which case they might say something like a
mango, in which case just walk around with a mango inside the bag as well. And
then that way, apples, oranges, mango, and you'll be set. Sometimes people
of something else as well. Like sometimes they say kiwi. If they say
what? You just make sure that you have a kiwi inside the bag. And you have a
kiwi inside the bag. Then no matter what the name, you're going to be set. Some
people try to catch you out and they name something like a citrus fruit that
wouldn't normally enjoy for an actual snack.
So sometimes you'll see something like a lemon, in which case just walk around.
Put a lemon in the bag as well, and then you'll be able to have a lemon, apple,
mango, all that sort of stuff. Some people don't listen to the bite thing
much, and they go for something else that you might enjoy as a snack. So they
might ask for something like, let's say, a banana, in which case put a banana in
there as well, and then you'll have all that.
And of course, every once in a while, you'll meet someone who's trying to
catch you out, and they'll say something weird, in which case I like to walk
around. with an entire cantaloupe in there as well. And if you have a
inside the bag, then it doesn't matter. You will be covered no matter what
people say. So there we are, folks. There's a trick that you can do at home
a bag and a bunch of fruit. I'm going to go.
I'm starting a new diet, so I'm just going to go take care of that. You just
enjoy. All right. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
When we come back, the wild and mind -bending deception of Bill Cook.
The traffic these days just seems to be getting worse and worse.
Well, our next act has a way to get from one place to another in the blink of an
eye. Here's Bill Cook.
Thank you very much! I have two wonderful friends from the audience.
Sean, and I've got Madison, and they're going to help me with this.
Well, what is this?
In magic, there are a few kind of, like...
basic things you have to know how to do. You have to know how to vanish
something. You have to know how to change something.
And the big one, kind of like the Holy Grail of stuff, is being able to
transport things.
I'm going to get you two to switch places on the stage without moving you
that spot.
And I want to do that with a little bit of old technology. They say you can't
teach an old dog new tricks. That's a lie.
This is some of the oldest technology I have ever seen. This is a tin can
telephone.
Updated for modern times. Here, Sean, if you would hold onto that. Hold onto the
can, actually, and check this out.
There's a little hook that comes out of that one.
Madison, if you'd be so kind, there's a hook that falls out of that one, too.
Two tin cans and a string. Now, Sean, how do you spell your name?
S -E -A -N.
S -E -A -N.
Sean.
S -E -A -N.
Sean, and let's do, like, a simple emoji, like a smiley face or a poop
Like, what is, like...
Smiley face, winky face, what do you like? Yeah, let's do a winky face. Winky
face. I like that. Sean with a winky face.
I will leave that inside of your tin can. You
are on what is known as stage right.
Now, Madison, how do you spell your name?
M -A -D.
M -A -D -I -S -O -N. M -A -D -I -S -O -N, just like it sounds. Madison, what
sort of smiley face, winky face, poop emoji, what would you like?
The emoji with the tongue sticking out. The emoji with the tongue sticking out.
So we'll go with that.
You know what I want to do? The nose and some of that, too. No offense, you
picked the easy one. She went with the tongue thing, and we're going to add the
stuff for embellishment.
Madison on this side of the stage.
Okie dokie. Madison, nice and tight.
Here we go. Now, to get them to change places, all I have to do is pull on the
string.
Watch.
That's when they switch.
See, you started over here, Sean, but now over here
is Madison.
Well, I don't know, because over here, down the line, what was Madison just a
second ago is now
Sean.
I got you guys to change places without even leaving your spot. Thank you guys
so much. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Next. Amazing is the only way to describe Paige Thompson.
Our next illusionist has been performing since she was just six years old. She
has put in well over her 10 ,000 hours in the craft.
Here's Paige Thompson.
Welcome, my new friend.
Your name?
Nicole. Nicole. Everyone, this is Nicole. She's going to be helping me out
creating a little, well, recreating a challenge I was recently given. Do you
have kids?
No, I don't either. They scare me. But I do have a niece, and she loves to
challenge me. So this is what she created for me. She gave me some of her
which was super nice. She must really trust me. But she wanted me to make
whatever she gave me disappear. So we're going to do that. So, Nicole, I'm going
to write your name on this bill. N -I -C -O -L -E, I'm guessing? Yes.
Crazy, you have the same name as my sister.
Okay, so we have Nicole on a $20 bill.
Do you have a favorite number?
Yes. What?
73. I knew that. Okay, number 73.
We got it. So number 73, we're going to say goodbye to this because the
challenge was to make everything she gave me disappear. Okay, disappear. Now,
add some drama, we'll even place it in this cute little envelope. Do you have
these cute little envelopes? No. And we used to do the whole seal it up.
We don't got that no more. So what do I have better? We have stickers.
And they match my hair. Great. Okay.
We got pink.
Perfect. And we're going to seal up that dollar bill and place it in plain view.
Okay? There it is. Now, we just have to say one word.
Presto. Whatever. And it's gone.
Bill's gone. Oh, my God. Super amazing.
She wasn't super impressed either. You don't look impressed. But that's fine. I
didn't say the envelope would disappear.
Right? No. I said the bill. The one I ripped.
This open. You want to take a little look -see? See any, Bill? Where's my 20?
Yeah, well, it's not really yours, but that's fine. That's besides the point.
But it is yours.
Yeah,
not too bad.
So, first things first. We did one.
Now we have some other items. And she gave me some very random things,
with a walnut.
I don't know why she chose that. Walnut. And an egg. Also an egg cup. I've
invested in because they tend to roll around.
I have dropped too many eggs.
Also, last but not least, would be an orange.
So she wanted me to make little guy to big guy disappear. Little guy to big
But we have to make it more magical, okay? So we add the cloth of mystery.
Ooh, it looks nice, right? It's soft, it's pretty.
Okay, great. So we're going to take each item, we're going to drop it in the
cloth, and hopefully it will vanish, right?
Yep. Bye to the walnut. Drop it in. Give it a blow.
Whoa. Good. Stay away. Oh, my God. It is gone.
I know. Okay.
That's the first thing. Next, we have the egg. Not the egg cup, because you
what? I never said I'd make the egg cup. Just the egg.
We'll change this up a little bit. We're going to make a little bundle of joy,
and we're going to say goodbye to the egg. Drop, drop, and you can feel it.
Oh, isn't there? It's there, but you know what?
It's gone.
Oh, Nicole, I told you it's magic. Great.
You know what? This trick was getting a little too repetitive for my taste,
okay? I didn't want to just make the orange disappear.
No, we are going to change this up. This becomes a magic wand.
Don't play with knives, but watch this. As I wave the magic wand and I slice
open the orange, we're going to see.
What is growing inside?
The egg! The egg! Yes! We go backwards and we find one juicy
egg. But if we're going all the way back, what else are we missing? I think
hear something. And when I crack open Mr. Egg, what do you see?
Oh, yes. We got a walnut goofing on out. Mr.
Walnut in here.
Oh boy, this is juicy. This is yummy. Do you want to try some?
Not right now. We're missing one thing, Nicole.
My 20? Where could it be?
It's not in there. Yeah?
It's magic.
Okay, here we go.
Bracket on open.
Give it a good smash.
You want to take that bill out? Take it.
Open that up for the world to see.
What do you see, Nicole?
Your 20!
And that is our show. I can tell you I have totally been blown away by our
masters tonight. And I can't wait for more magic next time. So be sure to join
us. Until then, I'm Dean Cain. Thank you for watching. Thank you for being here.
