Hi, I'm Dean Payne, and welcome to Masters of Illusion.

Now, did you know in the early days of magic, many magicians claimed to possess

supernatural powers?

Well, nowadays...

No one really makes that kind of a claim, but when you see what you're

see up here, you might just wonder.

Like, I'm wondering why Levent is walking out here during my opening. Yes!

know, you said, like, supernatural powers. You know what's funny? Years

people used to be, like, shrunken heads, but I figured out that I can do the

same thing with a deck of cards. It's the craziest thing. See, I'm going to

this one card out, so you can have a point of reference as I try to shrink

cards and make these cards get smaller and smaller. Look.

Look, they get smaller and smaller. Look at it. Oh, my gosh. Look at this. They

get smaller and smaller. Wait a minute. They did get smaller.

I'll make it even smaller. Look, look, look.

Oh, my gosh. Look at that. They get even smaller.

This is an optical delusion, really, because I'm the only one who believes it

happens. Look, it goes like this. Look, it gets even smaller.

I'll tell you what. Look, we're going to take this here, and look at it. You see

how small those cars are? These cars are absolutely tiny.

When I go like this, they come back to full size, and what can I say? This is

optical delusion just for you.

Whatever you do, just don't shrink my head, okay?

Okay, we'll try.

Good. No, don't. No, go away.

I'm going. Do something over there.

Well, very nice. We have somebody from the audience. All the way from the

audience. Your name is?

Shamika. Shamika. Very nice. We're going to show the famous egg and bag

illusion. Who are?

Come near me. Don't worry. I don't bite.

Egg inside the bag. Do you see the egg? Yes or no?

Yes. Do you feel the egg? Is it valid?

Yes. So make sure it's valid.

Valid. Valid.

Egg inside of the bag.

You feel the egg on the palm of the hand. Is it there? Yes or no?

Shemeka says, but it's there. It's there. Good, good, good. Yes, that's the

important part. Watch carefully.

Watch. Vanish.

Hold the bottom of the bag inside

out, please, Shemeka.

That's it. No egg?

Do you see the egg? Yes or no?

No.

Hold your hand out. Do you feel down to the bottom? Yes or no?

No egg? No egg. Do you feel? Do you see? No egg? No egg.

Watch. I hold the bag like this. Pay attention. You'll be doing it just like

this. Let go with the left hand. Grab the imaginary egg in the air. Throw it

I catch it.

Kaboom. Show the left hand. Empty. Go down to the bottom of the bag. Grab the

egg. Pull it out. You'll hear a huge round of applause from the audience like

this.

Imagine the egg in the air. Grab a hold of it.

Wow. You probably punctured it with a nail.

Tortured egg. Throw the egg up in the air. Yes, hold the right arm out to the

side.

Catch it with a flick of the wrist.

Yes. Go down to the bottom of the bag. You grab the egg, Shamika. Hold out.

everybody at the tip of your fingers. Could it be? What do you say?

Ah,

I know you did well. How did you do that?

And I have a little surprise for you. The snap of the fingers. The egg has

timed perfectly because it changed into a little watch. I found your wrist. Is

that yours?

Yeah.

I know. Probably I'm a devil, aren't I? Come on, folks. What do you say? What is

your wonderful shimika?

What you're about to see is nothing new.

But it is something a mere mortal shouldn't be able to do.

Here's Kid Ace.

We have a lovely volunteer from the audience. What's your name? Sydney. Now,

Sydney, I'm going to try to get inside of your mind.

I'm going to bring over a bag. Inside of that bag, I had some people write down

their favorite drinks from childhood up until now.

You're going to reach in that bag. You're going to grab some of those out.

You're going to read some of those off just to show that we have a variety.

Pretty straightforward, right? Yes. All right, great. Easy.

So reach into the bag.

Grab a few out.

And just a few.

How many do you have? One. I'll help you out.

So what does that say? Chocolate milk.

Crumple it up. Throw it back into the bag.

So we got chocolate milk.

Read some of those off.

Fire them away. We have strawberry milk. Strawberry milk. Go ahead. Use a

variety. You can toss the rest of those back.

All right. So this time you're going to select a drink, but you're going to keep

it a secret.

You're not going to share it with any of us until we ask you to. Is that cool?

So you're going to take one.

Committed to memory. Is that all right? Yep.

Go for it.

Now, when you look at this drink, I'm going to ask you a series of questions

that just require a yes or no answer.

Okay.

Yes or no.

Sydney, is this a drink you've had before?

Yes. It is.

Why are you smiling? I'm excited about this.

Now, if this drink had a certain tint or color to it, could you imagine it in

your mind?

Yes. That's good. Can you smell it?

Yes. And try to taste it if you can.

Okay, I can taste it. You can?

This is perfect. I want you to take all those elements and put it together into

one form.

Imagine that drink, okay? Okay.

Face forward.

And only when I say three do I want you to say the name of your drink out loud.

One.

Two.

Three. Red wine.

Ladies and gentlemen, red wine.

That was a good choice.

That was a good choice. You can't have this, but I'll enjoy it.

Next. Is your mind able to keep up with the antics of Trig Watson?

Some of our favorite modern technology feels like magic.

Until you see actual magic.

Here's Trig Watson.

We live in an age in which the digital world and the physical world are

together. And a perfect example of this are these new augmented reality apps,

which allow you to place digital objects in your physical environment through

your phone's camera. I'll show you how they work. This is the food category

here. You see there's... avocado, hamburger and fries, or sports. We've

football, basketball. Let's use the soccer ball for this. I'll show you how

works. You want to start off by going into augmented reality mode.

The first step is to scan the surface that you want to place the object on.

And then you just tap, and the ball appears. You can move it around the

Now, obviously, it's not there in real life. It's just there in augmented

reality.

But look.

Really realistic.

Almost like you just reach out and touch it.

Or even grab it.

Let's see how real we can make the world of augmented reality feel.

We'll use a couple extra items.

And... We'll use this tablet here on which I've placed the augmented reality

so that you can experience what's happening in real life and in augmented

reality simultaneously.

Let's see if I can get this ball to travel from this cup,

cup A, we'll let it get detected, and travel all the

way over to this cup, cup D, using augmented reality.

I want everyone to watch this through the tablet screen.

It floats up, and floats over, and... And look,

it worked in real life as well.

Let's take this up a notch.

This time we'll just use a single cup.

And we'll switch over to the next module.

And instead of making it teleport, this time we'll mess with the size.

Watch the tablet screen.

And now you should see in the tablet, there's now a green button here that

allows me to mess with the size. If I press it, the ball gets a little bigger.

And it falls into the cup.

What I love about this technology is it allows us to control our physical

environment in ways that we really never have before.

For example, if I hold the ball really far away, it probably looks pretty small

in the tablet screen.

If I hold it close, it gets really big. But if I hold it just right, your

perception of what's real and what's digital can start to blur.

Usually magicians pull rabbits out of hats, but I'm different.

We know. I pull a hat out of a rabbit.

I'm a backwards magician.

Sometimes the hat disappears and it goes back into the rabbit.

Other times it disappears, it goes other places.

When it disappears and it's not other places and it's not in the rabbit, some

people find that amazing. I find it over here.

Then a magic silver streamer comes out of the hat.
