We'd like to try something a little bit
darker for you now. Yes, something

darker. You think some aluminum foil and
someone from the crowd. What about the

guy in the plaid shirt there? What's

CJ? CJ, have you ever been placed under
a voodoo curse?

No? Then tonight is your lucky night.
Come on up here. Give it up for CJ.

Now, in order to do a voodoo curse, it's
very important that you need a voodoo

doll, one that looks exactly like the
person whom you intend to affect.

Look at that.

It's like looking into a cloth mirror,
isn't it, CJ?

CJ, what we want you to do is take the
doll, hold it with both hands in front

your eyes, don't move the doll from that
space in space, just keep staring into

the doll's dead eyes.

Look into the eyes of the voodoo doll
and listen to the sound of my voice, and

whilst I talk, Stuart will be
accompanying me by playing some music on

analogue pocket synthesiser. But don't
worry, guys, this music isn't sinister

and it's not being designed to influence
your thought in any way.

CJ. Look into the eyes of a voodoo doll.

Begin to believe that you feel what the
doll feels.

This is the power of voodoo.

We will only know that our experiment in
voodoo has worked when we hear the

sound of the mystical phoenix as it
flies overhead.

There it was.

Now it's time for the aluminum foil. I'm
going to give a part of that aluminum

foil to CJ and Stuart will get the other
bit.

We're going to take half of the foil,
wrap it around the hands of this voodoo

doll. I'm going to take the cigarette
lighter here. I'm going to light the

and hopefully, if the voodoo has worked,
we should get some sort of effect.

Ready, CJ? We're going to do this after
three. You've got the foil. Here we go.

CJ, you all right? What was that?

I don't know.

What did it feel like?

I thought I was sitting, and then

there's nothing wrong with this chair.

CJ, brand new chair. Take a seat there.

I'm going to try the voodoo once again
after three. You got the foil?

Here we go.

CJ, you all right?

Yeah.

This hasn't worked.

This is our fault, you see. What's
happened here is we haven't done this

You see, sometimes in order to put
someone into a very deep voodoo trance,

have to use a deep voice. So we'll do
that again, only this time when I do it,

I'll do it a bit deeper than I did the
first time.

CJ, look into the eyes of the voodoo
doll.

Begin to believe that you feel what the
doll feels.

This is the power of voodoo.

There was a phoenix. The first time must
have been a pigeon or something like

that. CJ, have you still got that piece
of aluminum foil? Excellent. Hold it

nice and tight in your hand and hold it
there.

Perfect. Thank you. Here we go. The
voodoo should work now. Here we go. One,

two, three, four, five, six, seven,
eight, nine, ten.

That's it. The aluminum foil got too hot
for him to even hold onto anymore. That

is the power of voodoo. Round of
applause for CJ.

And he goes back to his chair and the
power of voodoo.

CJ, what's wrong? Are you okay?

You're stuck, what?

Just a little bit.

Okay, don't worry. We do know exactly
what to do in this situation. This has

happened to us once before.

The effects do wear off in 24 hours, so

there's something else we can do, but
it's not very nice.

These objects were all given to me by a
prisoner, a guy that wrote me from

prison. And he explained that he spends
22 hours a day in solitary confinement.

And magic saved his life.

And he had to come up with original
tricks because they wouldn't allow

things in.

The prison cell.

So I created this trick for him. I hope
you enjoy.

A prisoner, Mark Bent, has been writing
me letters for years.

Major sentence for a minor offense. This
man's letters would bring you to tears.

A convict magician stealing props from
the kitchen, practicing in secret

magic tricks are forbidden.

Wolf, bottle, ring.

He used props that he found.

He invented tricks with these things to
amaze those around.

To keep his life on track, he developed
a knack of balancing objects he found in

an impossible stack.

In prison he found the Lord and my book
on playing cards.

So he would write me when he was bored,
and I would teach him tricks to show the

guard.

Alone in his cell, that's every night
for poor Mark.

His own living hell, doing magic tricks
in the dark.
