In the earliest days of magic, magicians claimed supernatural powers. Now, of

course, we all know that this isn't true. But when you see what you are

see, you might just doubt yourself.

You want to see what I'm talking about?

Well, the eye can confuse the brain.

There's a saying, the eye cannot see what the brain does not know.

All of these objects are actually the same color.

Will our illusionist confuse you tonight?

My bet is yes.

Let's begin tonight with a great French illusionist. He's performed all over the

world. Tonight, a little problem with an ironing board. Watch Xavier Mortimer.

Time, once again, for our friend who always finds a way to surprise us.

Well, tonight, he's looking for a member of our audience who is not afraid to

lose his wallet.

I'm afraid to lose my wallet.

But this, this is Chipper Lowell.

I'm going to need, let's see, I need somebody to come and help out.

Yes, we're going to use a paper bag.

So go ahead and put your wallet in the paper bag. That way no one sees it. It's

safe and sound. Put your hand out like this. All right, we'll place it right

there, and I'm going to fold it up. There you go. That's it. No one knows

it is.

Okay, you know what? We're going to put it behind a wall, okay?

That way, no one's going to go back there.

You seem a little worried. It's totally hidden.

No, no, it really is. It's totally hidden among five other bags.

Keep smiling.

As a matter of fact, I am going to take the bags, and I'm going to mix them up a

little bit, and I'm going to put them into a row just like that.

All right. And it is time to play a game. Are you ready, CJ?

Yeah. Okay. No, this is going to be fun. This is going to be fun. All right. I

want you to go up to the mic. Stand right behind the mic. We have one, two,

three, four, five, six bags.

And what I'm going to give you is three yeses and three noes to use however

you'd like. Okay?

Three yeses, three noes. There's six bags. You get the idea. Okay?

So into the microphone. Here we go. Bag number one, yes or no? Yes. Are you

sure? Yes.

Okay. All right. We're keeping that. Bag number two, yes or no?

Yes. Okay. Bag number five, yes or no?

No. No. Okay. And bag number six would be yes, right? Because there's three

yeses, three noes. You made excellent choices.

Yes, you did, because that's the name of the game.

I'm going to need the help of a lovely volunteer, and I think perhaps this man

Byron, excellent.

First of all, Byron, are you familiar with playing cards?

Somewhat, yeah. You know the differences between spades, clubs, diamonds, and

hearts, yes? Thank you.

Excellent. Now, Byron, first of all, I've got a little gift for you. It's

inside of this envelope. If you could put that in a pocket, that's just for

later. We don't need that yet.

And I've got another gift for Byron.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is what we call in the business as an invisible

of playing cards.

That's for you, Byron. Now, Byron, you're just going to follow my

and everything should work according to plan. First of all, Byron, when you're

doing a card trick, it's very important that you give those cards a really good

mix, a good shuffle. So you give those cards a good mix, a good shuffle, so

All right, I should be a little bit more specific. Byron, you might want to take

them out of the box first.

I'll take the box, Byron. Thanks very much. And now you can give those cards a

If you could get the invisible chair for me, Byron.

Excellent. Place it right there.

And have a seat. Actually, wait, Byron, wait. What do you do? Sorry. Apology.

Safety first. There's actually an invisible carrot on that chair. You can

me the carrot, Byron. You don't want to sit on that.

And, um... Oh, apologies. Did you... I'm good. You're good? Okay.

Byron, if you just spread the cards across the table so we can see that

well mixed.

Excellent. That looks very good, Byron. I want you to gather up the cards for me

now.

And hand them over, Byron, and listen very carefully, all right?

I'm going to fan the cards in front of your face just like this, Byron. I just

want you to look inside, and just yes or no, do you see a playing card?

I do. Can you remember your card?

Yep. Can you take out your invisible card,

commit it to your memory, fold it in fours, toss it behind your head?

Excellent. Now, Byron, again, you know the differences between fades, clubs,

diamonds, and hearts. I do. For the first time out loud...

I want you to name your card so everybody can hear. What was it?

Four of hearts. The four of hearts. Now, folks, if you remember at the beginning

of the routine, I gave Byron a little gift. You put that in your pocket, yes?

Go ahead, Byron. I don't want to touch it.

I want you to rip that open. It's just like Christmas.

Magicians ask you to name a card. Well, our next performer already has cards

with their own names.

Welcome, Matt Marcy.

Thank you very much.

I'm going to need somebody to help me.

Come on up here. What do you need?

Ursula. Ursula, thank you very much for helping. We're going to do a card trick

together, Ursula. A lot of magicians will ask you to pick a card, but I don't

think that's really fair. They could maybe force you to take a particular

you don't want. So to be totally fair, I'm going to ask you to name any card in

the deck. Any card you'd like.

Eight of clubs.

The eight of clubs. Sure.

I'm very glad you picked that card, but I should say that...

I asked you to name a card. You actually identified a card. You used the value

eight in the suit clubs. And that's fine. That's what a lot of people do.

But cards actually have names, all of them. And they're hard to remember. So I

made this sort of deck of flash cards to help us remember.

We're going to start by finding the card you wanted, the eight of clubs. Let's

find that and pull that out of the deck.

There it is. All right.

So if you pick, let's say, the first card, that card is actually named Susan.

Who knew, right?

If you picked the nine of diamonds, that card is named Brittany.

Yeah. The jack of hearts, that's Jack.

Of course. In fact, all of these cards, Jason, Kimberly, Anna, Anthony, Amanda,

you can see Amy, all the way through the deck, they all have different names.

But I told you I was glad you picked the eight of clubs.

And Ursula, that is the one card that is named Ursula.
