[tires screeching]

[paper rustling]

From Eastern Europe, Linka, with the power of wind.

From Asia, Gi, with the power of water.

[water gushing]

And from South America, Ma-Ti, with the power of heart.

When the five powers combine

they summon Earth's greatest champion..

Captain Planet!

(Planeteers) Go, Planet!

(Captain Planet) The power is yours!

[instrumental music]

[sighs] This is far enough.

Now get a hammer and fix the fence

so those kids can't sneak in.

Get to work!

[groaning]

But, Suu, didn't Mr. Ne tell us not to come back?

Come on, San. Don't be a scaredy-cat.

San, look what | found.

There's something inside.

[grunts]

[both gasps]

Look! Wait till we show our friends.

(Boy #1) ‘Hey! Hey, who's over there?’

[dramatic music]

‘What you're looking at, Planeteers, is cesium 137'

‘a highly radioactive isotope. '

(Gaia) ‘Used properly in small doses'

‘it can help to fight diseases like cancer'

‘but in large doses, it can be dangerous, even deadly.’

‘So careful disposal is important.’

(Wheeler) ‘Especially since there's an eco-villain’

‘who thrives on radiation.'

[explodes]

(Gi) ‘Duke Nukem. '

[suspenseful music]

(Gaia) ‘Last week in Brazil, he got hold of a small capsule.’

‘Nukem's discovered that the more cesium isotope he absorbs'

‘the more destructive he becomes.’

[fire crackling]

[evil laughter]

‘For him, cesium is like--'

Like spinach to Popeye?

(Gaia) ‘Uh, close enough.’

‘Four days ago, a radiation therapy machine'

‘vanished from local a hospital.’

‘It has enough cesium to make Nukem a walking disaster area.’

Then we must find it before he does.

[computer beeps] Oh, no!

Our pollution probe says

there was another radiation release

two minutes ago.

Whoever was exposed has already gotten a dose of 50 rems.

‘Hurry, Planeteers.’

‘At this rate, they only have 18 more minutes'

‘before the dose is fatal.’

(Kwame) ‘So our deadline is 7:21.'

Let us begin our search at the hospital that lost the cesium.

[instrumental music]

[Lead Suit breathing heavily] ‘Sir, what's the rush?’

In four days, someone probably found it.

| can smell radiation around here somewhere.

[indistinct announcement over P.A.]

Did you report the cesium treatment machine missing?

Yes, | did. | am Dr. Chi, head of oncology.

Oh, and this is Aung.

| had radiation therapy for cancer.

That is why my hair fell out.

when those darn kids Suu and San

tried to sneak in again.

That's when we dropped it.

(Linka) And it broke open?

(Mr. Ne) Yes. Some metal capsules rolled out.

(Dr. Chi) Shielding for the radioactive cesium.

- How many were there? - Two. We lost the big one.

(Mr. Ne) But | opened the little one.

| didn't touch it. | just set it on my desk.

Four days, even at low exposure level

that explains how you got so sick.

7:13. We have to find those kids in eight minutes.

(Kwame) "They are too radioactive.’

Let me try the Geiger counter.

[device beeping]

Da. | have found some cesium.

It is crumbling apart.

‘This whole neighborhood is contaminated.’

Oh, no. Now we have to warn everyone.

Maybe | can speed things up.

Your street is contaminated with radioactivity.

‘Stay inside until a clean-up crew arrives.’

7:15. Those kids have only 6 minutes left.

Less than that if Nukem finds them first.

(Wheeler) ‘And we'll get the other kids.’

[Suu gasps]

Suu, those big kids will take away our magic stars.

There you are. Don't worry. We're here to help you.

We got to decontaminate these kids.

| will contact Dr. Chi. Heart.

Looks like you'll pull through, Mr. Ne.

You mean I'm back to normal?

With radiation, you're never the same.

for cancer and other problems.

(Ma-Ti) Dr. Chi, this is Ma-Ti.

(Dr. Chi) Stay right where you are.

| will bring the decontamination unit.

[Geiger counter beeping]

[whimpering]

unless you want an underwater tour of the bay.

Hope you left us some hot water.

(Duke) ‘That lousy Planet’

‘keeping us in here until my radiation goes down. '

So here we are with nothing to do

but stare at each other's faces for the rest of my half-life.

(Lead Suit) ‘Well, sir, every mushroom cloud has a silver lining.’

At least I'll always know when my dinner break is.

(Lead Suit) ‘Ouch! Oh, that hurt.'

[watch beeping]

(Planeteers) Go, Planet!

(Gaia) X-rays and nuclear medicine can help doctors treat disease

but radiation can be dangerous.

(Gi) ‘Bleach and other household chemicals’

may be a big help around the home..

But they're poison if they get inside you.

So keep all chemicals out of the reach of younger children.

Or better yet, choose nontoxic alternatives for cleaning

like lemon juice, vinegar, and baking soda.
